The first update of the year for the Switch Online SNES and NES service has been announced and it will add four more games.
First up, we have the classic cute-'em-up shooter Pop'n Twinbee and the 16-bit competitive sports title Smash Tennis. Both of these Super Nintendo titles have never been released in the United States before. The other two are Shadow of the Ninja and Eliminator Boat Duel for the NES.
SNES
Pop’n TwinBee – The sixth game in the TwinBee series, this vertically scrolling shooter takes place in a cute, poppy setting. TwinBee and WinBee hear that the great Dr. Murdock has lost his wits, so they set off to return him to his normal self. This game was originally released in Japan and Europe in 1993, but this will be its first release in the U.S.
Smash Tennis – In Smash Tennis, the controls may be simple, but there’s plenty of room for skill! With strong shots, weak shots, lobs and eight different court types, you can develop all sorts of approaches, unlocking the deep strategies of tennis. This game was originally released in Japan in 1993 and Europe in 1994, but this will be its first release in the U.S.
NES
Shadow of the Ninja – In the midst of disorder and oppression, two shadow warriors rise to the people’s cry for help. Choose to play as one of two ninja masters from the Iga clan as they infiltrate enemy front lines. Master tactics of stealth as you acquire additional weapons and power-ups in order to overthrow an evil emperor and destroy his wicked empire, solo or with a friend.
Eliminator Boat Duel – In this powerboat racing game, get behind the wheel of one of the fastest machines on the water to earn boatloads of in-game cash. Drivers earn thousands of dollars for competing, and you’ll use your winnings to repair and upgrade your boat to push your competitive edge to its maximum. A little aggression goes a long way – just try not to get sunk yourself, or you’ll be swimming back to dry land.
This bumps the NES library on the Nintendo Switch Online service up to 52 titles and the Super NES collection up to 26 titles. All up, that's 78 classic games to enjoy. All of these titles will be made available later this month on 19th February and each one promises to offer plenty of multiplayer action.
Over in Japan, the offerings are slightly different. Switch Online subscribers located in this region will be able to play Breath of Fire II, Pop'n TwinBee, Sunsoft's side-scrolling platformer Atlantis no Nazo and the action RPG title God Slayer by SNK Corp.

I've never heard of any of these games before, gotta be real.
Yay for TwinBee and Shadow of the Ninja.
I remember when someone at Nintendo (maybe Reggie) said that Switch Online will become "the place to be" for retro gamers.
Will Switch's lifespan be long enough for that?
Boo. Donkey Kong please
@BLD shadow of the ninja is awesome
Gimme Actraiser, you cowards.
This means that an Nintendo Direct may happen on the 19th if they're showing these off now.
I only want to play if they title it Elimonator Boat Duel
Thanks for Twin Bee and Shadow of the Ninja but... just these four? Really? We wait this long and that's all they got to add? If we're only going to get 2 games per system on a "whenever" basis then at least give us some real classics... Jackal, Chrono Trigger, Actraiser, Holy Diver, etc...
I wonder why the japanese offerings have been differing lately.
Are we really scraping the barrel already?
Anyway, who would love to see the NES Remix games ported or even new editions released?
Where the ♡♪!? is SMRPG?!
It's more of a nostalgia request but Gyruss please.
Great picks......
Yeah no.
Oof. I’ll obviously check them out and all but I haven’t heard of any of them except Twin Bee. I do appreciate the porting of the never localized before games but they are sitting on a GOLD MINE of games and well... yeah. That’s all I’m going to write.
See you when they release...
Excited to play Pop n Twinbee! Shadow of the Ninja looks cool too.
Not trying to be a downer, but yawn..
Popn TwinBee! Sweetness! And shadow of the ninja is great also. I need some SCAT now!
Never heard of them. These are some of the strangest looking n64/cube/wii/wii-u ports.
Still, thanks for keeping us up to date Liam.
Although the release schedule is PAINFULLY slow, I do appreciate getting games that were never released on any Virtual or Mini Console. I understand wanting the real classics, but they release those on everything and it can be a downer sometimes too. Yes, SMRPG should be on Switch. But I personally just played it on SNES Mini last year and would be disappointed to see it hit. Can't please everyone...
Pop N Twinbee is excellent, good choice.
Still waiting for Donkey Kong country to arrive
Nintendo be trolling us like usual
Much Effort.
Such Games.
Very Excite.
So 4 games nobody cares for, every three months then.
Seriously, no Final Fantasy?
@emhardesty they have to get permissions from the dev companies to get many games. They will come eventually. Well some of them.
@Thesharkfromjaws The fact that I have ActRaiser on my Wii U is just about the only thing keeping me from selling it at this point.
4 games?? What a joke. & The choices? I’d rather attend a yawning festival! Thank goodness the Switch eshop is loaded to the gills with retro goodies no thanks to Nintendo.
We need to get some Donkey Kong Country, ActRaiser, EarthBound and Ufouria soon.
Shadow of the Ninja is one of NES best games. The others...uh?
I was excited, and then I read the details. At least Shadow of the Ninja is a pretty cool game, but none of these are gonna get me to boot up the NES/SNES apps.
Good to see some more obscure games. Those ones on the NES sound cool.
But why couldn’t they add at least one classic to the SNES lineup. Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country... would be easy wins for people with the online service.
Eliminator Boat Duel is an underrated gem - Happy to see it make the cut!
What a bunch of stupid nonsense.
@NinChocolate I can hook you up with a number of a chick who is into that, but you’ll probably have to pay her.
How is Donkey kong not on the service yet. I get stuff like Chrono trigger and ffvi are other companies but Nintendo owns so many games that are still not on the snes service.
Well, I guess if I want my portable DKC or EarthBound fix I could always fire up my 3DS. Might not be on a bigger 6 inch screen but at least it's there.
You want me to be jazzed up about Nintendo Online? N64 and Gamecube games. FOR ME the NES days are over and there is a scant few SNES games I would waste time with.
@fadedcolors
Twinbee is good...
Smash Tennis is just the European version of Family Tennis by Namco, which already released on the Japanese app instead of Super Tennis. The thing is, it plays near identical to Super Tennis, just looks a little better and has more options.
At this stage of the SNES app,I have to say that's a really poor selection. The last random update at least brought 4 SNES games. The video does say 'February Update' though, I wonder if they're going back to monthly updates? Or perhaps Nintendo have a surprise for us in the next Direct. Another free game, Tetris 99 style would be great.
Meh. Not interested.
Smash tennis??? That was a boner killer
@Torakaka why would this hint at a Nintendo direct on the 19th?
Game never released in America to justify putting it up, also justifying why Europe gets shafted, why have two tennis games ? (3 if you count the nes one)
Are they really sitting round a table struggling to think of another Snes game to put up and the result is another tennis game and the clincher being it was never released in America,
just get Axelay sorted
And just put king fu master up for the NES,
(Who the .... puts king fu heroes up)
it's a well known classic game, instead of this straight to video p**h
A really thought the premise of these NES and SNES apps was to show of the past greats/classics, any kid now must huv thought we had it really bad going with the shockers that they are putting up
Shadow of the Ninja looks like it could be fun. Pop’n TwinBee looks like it could be a decent enough playthrough as well.
"Great snes classics as, what were they called again, oh yeah smash tennis, you played it right? No, oh well everything else is too expensive and you clowns are only playing us 20 bucks a year so $&@% you."
Pop'n Twinbee alone makes the list for me. Glad to see that Konami gem finally coming to US at last.
ZzzzzzzZzzzzz
At this point probably won’t even notice when my Amazon Prime Free year ends. $20 for 4 months of game pass makes more sense than 12 months of this nonsense.
@Stuffgamer1 No, they could. It costs them NOTHING to add games to the service and a robust library will only attract more paying customers. Why they won’t give us the famous classics AND the rare/overlooked titles, I’ll never understand. More games pleases everyone. Few games pleases no one.
..........okay then.
Seriously getting disappointed in Nintendo's handling of it's legacy titles this generation (especially compared to last gen). Here's hoping they're adding another console this year, even if it's locked behind a 'premium' pass or something.
.....and scraping the bottom of the barrel already for the SNES.
A plethora of amazing SNES games and this is what they decide on. Release obscure games, sure, but pepper in some of the classics.
I know this is an unpopular opinion, however I am actually okay with these releases. I love DKC and Earthbound as much as anyone, however I have played them both multiple times. I have never even heard of 3 out of 4 of these releases which brings me a brand new experience. I wish we got drops more often so obscure games like this would be more welcome next to the classics everyone wants.
I don't want to discourage lesser known games from getting brought to the service. But after waiting, like, MONTHS for an update, and we get a mere 2 NES and 2 SNES games, and none of any of the bigger names that people have been asking for...
And still no Game Boy, GB Color, N64, or GBA... At this rate Playstation 6 will be out before Nintendo Switch gets GBA and N64 games.
I don't want to hack or use roms, I WANT to do things the legit way. Please Nintendo, provide that option!
@leo13 Nintendo usually announce updates to the NES and SNES prior to a Direct. It has happened before.
Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, FF6, Super Mario RPG when?
@TechaNinja Either when they're good and ready or enough demands from the fans of those series.
Gosh, another troll attempt by Nintendo!
Those hoping for Final Fantasies and Chrono Trigger, be real. Square Enix sells these games on other platforms, they even sell DQ 1-3 on eShop. I doubt unless Nintendo pays them quite a lot, they won't allow these. And Nintendo probably won't pay them a lot.
Regarding the lacklustre games, I can only think of one reason Nintendo does this. They don't want to cannibalise the indie games.
...I don’t know any of these games besides the Eliminator Boat Game. The only reason why I know it is because of that one AVGN video, where he’s talking about the worst video game box arts of all time.
Never heard of Shadow of the Ninja. Looks kinda interesting.
Did we really need another Tennis game?
So many great first party SNES games fans are BEGGING for. But sure, give us tennis, whatever.
I'm glad I let my free trial expire.
The whining and entitlement in this comments section... makes me proud to be a Nintendo fan.
Pop ‘n’ TwinBee is good, especially as we just got Bells ‘n’ Whistles. If Konami are giving us some shooters I’d really like Axelay and Gradius III.
I've been hoping for Onyanko Town, but I might be the only one that want's it.
These are some underrated gems, your the best Nintendo. Keep the fun online coming.
@Torakaka really, that's interesting, I'd never noticed
ah our monthly disappointment in NSO! yup, its as "eh" as ever
Big OOOF, yeah not helping me want to renew when it comes up.
This is to be frank, disappointing, if this is gonna be a subscription service, just give us the damn library already. You’d have to be subscribed to keep access anyways.
Most of these reveals get panned by viewers already, so the drip strategy to build hype is not working as intended.
And it’s not like these reveals become the conversation of the gaming community online at large outside of the specific Nintendo fan niche.
We all know that for these games is not that difficult at all for Nintendo to do. It’s just the same emulator.
Imagine if Disney did this with Disney+ and every 2 months just randomly drip fed whatever from their vast library. Could be a classic, or could be some obscure thing from the 70’s that maybe your mom vaguely remembers as a kid...
Shadow of the Ninja is a fantastic game. Brutal graphics and superb coop. Eliminator Boat Duel is another great game! Guru! 😁
@oh_no_melon Prepare to be disappointed
Onyanko Town(Famicom): You're a mama cat going around a large pacman-like neighborhood maze trying to find your baby kitty. You have to avoid dogs -open manholes to get rid of them or jump over houses. I think consensus is, most people don't like it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0qzWMdyloY
They’ve drip-fed Virtual Console releases since 2006 with the launch of Wii U. They’re content to withhold games we want to “give us something to look forward to”. And by the end of the Wii, Wii U and 3DS’ lifespan, they still had not released all the games we wanted. And then the process repeats with the next console starting with the same old games.
Holy Cow!
I was waiting for Kage (Shadow of the Ninja) for quite a long time!
One of my most favourite games on NES from my childhood.
I think I like it even more than Ninja Gaiden
Give it a try if you haven't yet
@bro2dragons Come on, this is Nintendo we're talking about. They're meticulously quality testing every single retro release for no good reason. Also they probably have to pay third parties for licencing their games, so it's certainly not ZERO cost. Enough to justify this embarrassment? Hell no. But it's no good pretending these releases are that easy, even if they SHOULD be.
@Bass_X0 Oh sure, the same old thing us old-timer NLifers are WAY past used to. Only this time they're releasing random stuff that never hit VC before. Stuff with a fanbase even if the excitement over Shadow of the Ninja is anything to go by.
At this rate by the time there's even a halfway decent selection of games for this online thing the switch will be on it's last legs. Ever since the original Wii's VC it's like all they wanna do is drip feed us two maybe three games at a time.
No wonder people resort to other methods of getting these games. 😉
I never understood the whole copywrite thing anyway. They tell you not to copy video tapes illegally but they put Record buttons on VCR's. How does that make any sense if it's unlawful?
"JUST GIVE US GAMECUBE AND GBA GAMES ALREADY!!!"
"What's that you say? Another Tennis game for SNES, off course, here you are!"
"SHNMBBBBBDDDDDMMMMMMMWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!"
@Heavyarms55 Well, Pop 'n Twinbee is a pretty good game. But I suppose I can see a point that with only a couple games updated each month, no HUGE hitters.
(I think Breath of Fire II on the Japanese service is a catch-up release with the western selection.)
That Famicom selection is a pretty huge contrast. One fairly well-regarded game, and another from the school of "video games are supposed to frustrate and enrage the player" game design.
And I dare say this update is the first time we've seen an Electro-Brain game digitally released.
Wow of all the SNES games out there and we get these twinbee is ok but another tennis game really I’m regretting subscribing to this and to think I bought the SNES controller too
You really can do better than this Nintendo
Ok, the service is cheap as a yearly subscription, I adjust my expectations accordingly..... Even so, this is poor!!
To accept this as being ok would be giving them no incentive to improve going forwards. Put bluntly, simply not good enough!!
very whelming line up but ok
I always wanted to play pop'n'twinbee when I had my original SNES back in the 90s, so actually quite pleased with this one. Can we get uniracers next if we're going for obscure gems from the SNES back catalogue?
Game Boy (Color) and Game Boy Advance, please! Never played Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission
Pop 'n' Twinbee is ace! Good additions, although I'm sure some folk will complain lol. Ah well.
@GrailUK I came for the crying, wasn’t disappointed. I’ve barely scratched what they gave us originally, on top of my existing backlog (which I said I would never let happen) and just living life in general I don’t have a clue how I’ll ever fit them in. I’m wondering how many hours a week some of these people game to be so starved of things to play...
@Elvie I've heard that they will release Nintendo 64 games on Switch by 2031 even though Super Mario 64 was a launch title on Wii.
Wait, this is not what the Donkey Kong Country trilogy looks like?
Do be honest, dont really care about the games, I just want to be able to order my SNES controller again.
Shadow of the Ninja was known as Blue Shadow when it was released over here in PAL-land.
Twinbee and Shadow Ninja are legit, not sure about the other two though.
I just wish they’d provide an option to hide that horrible UI at the bottom of the screen!
@WiltonRoots it must be nice when your expectations are so low.
But when you've had access to the VC, then they replace it with this joke of an online service, most won't be as easily pleased as you are.
Not because their standards are high, its because your standards are low.
I have Eliminator boat duel. Its fun once. It isnt bad but it will disappoint a lot of people by not being nearly as good as youd want in 2020. Its sort of fun but still sucks. They cant get rid of these tennis games at the retro game store. The Japanese games are better. They get an RPG.
@Stuffgamer1
Shadow of the ninja was a wii VC release.
@Razer I just don't care enough to get upset about video games. Sorry. Especially over something that only costs about 5p a day.
@Tsuchinoko I’m just glad that they’re giving us the same number of games now. A few of the previous monthly updates had 3 NES games in Japan but only 2 in the West as they didn’t bother replacing the Japan-only releases
@MotaroRIP true that! xD i haven't touched the snes app for a single moment ... because i am waiting for the dkc games 1,2,3 .... if they never come, i will never install the snes app ;D
If this is what they're putting out for SNES I wish we could just jump straight to GBA. Maybe we'll get GameCube in 2025
popNTwinbee is a really good shootemup! not usually my genre but well worth a go! not familiar with the nes games but hey its more games!
Looks like this is all Nintendo is doing during the month of February Pokemon Home and a few Switch Online games, lame
2 wins for NES, one for SNES.
@lemonjellydude Both NES games are really good.
Pop N' Twinbee is a great game and has some of the best music ever on the SNES.
Not played the other 3 but at least it is more 2 player stuff for the service.
Not exactly exciting and the Service overall continues to be underwhelming.
But I’m still surprised at how many people are proudly proclaiming they don’t know what these games are, including Pop N Twinbee.
Nintendo's entire online service for switch is a massive generic failure. I want n64 and gamecube titles. Not 16-32 bit garbage from the 80s/early 90s that I can easily emulate on my phone. What a joke
Ahahahahah wow that's all I got to say
Noice! New games! Will hit up the Jpn releases first.
Awesome update.
@WiltonRoots,
Too much time fella.
I love TwinBee games, so I'm well up for that one.
Would be nice to get some more RPGs on there though. The SNES was so good for them and I'd love one to play portable on the Switch. Any of Terranigma, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, EarthBound, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia/Time, Secret of Evermore, Lufia, Lufia II, Star Ocean would do me just fine! I get that it's harder to bring in 3rd party games though, so I'll take Super Mario RPG!
@Sinton
Correct and I still have the cartridge, manual and box great game which you can play cooperatively
@The_Pixel_King
You already can
@johnvboy Life priorities really mate - video games are very low on that list. Life is far too short to get stressed out over a form of entertainment you can take or leave.
I'll try the Ninja one. Eh to the rest.
I’ve not used Nintendo Online since the first day I bought my annual subscription (when the SNES games dropped). None of these four ‘classics’ will change that lack of interest...
I foolishly thought the arrival of all those SNES games was a sign that the Online Service was changing for the better ... I was wrong
Unexciting additions. With 0,5 games per month, the titles need to be better.
Well there's always hope of N64 titles in september, although I personally think they'll add something from the game boy line-up.
@Dayton311,
Only unpopular with the internet forum posting minorities, who let's be honest here will moan no matter what.
@Razer,
Or you need to stop being so entitled and either accept the service for what it is, or move on.
Not too fussed about the specific games but really pleased they're adding games and looking forward to giving them a go.
People asked so much for SNES games, and while SNES games greatly improved the service, it still sucks, it basically went from 2 uninteresting games to 4 uninteresting games, some people are now asking for Game Boy or Nintendo 64, but this would only change the service to 6 uninteresting games, at first we would get classics like Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, but then we would get stuff like Quest 64 and Chameleon Twist.
Many people love the Twinbee series and it's good to see a Japan-only game coming to the West, Shadow of the Ninja looks like an underrated classic, but this month was still terrible, this service needs games coming faster.
@johnvboy Calling people entitled for wanting the service to be better is such a lame thing to say.
@Fazermint,
No it's not, I have paid for the same games over and over again, I much prefer this system for such a small amount of money per month, Nintendo used to give their online for free which was a bonus imho, now they are charging and peoples attitude to this is entitled.
@joey302 this is not making me want to renew my 1 year subscription. So poor these games are trash. Come on Nintendo!
@johnvboy No one is entitled, this service sucks, it's just NES and SNES ROMs on an emulator, Nintendo could easily deliver them faster.
Poppin twinbee is an excellent game that is worth your time. I like that they give all these other titles a chance for once, I could kind of care less about having Mario rpg or castlevania or whatever for the 50000th time
Virtual console had its faults but at least it had a decent selection of games to choose from and you could actually pick out which games you wanted from the service. Instead you are forced to buy into an online gaming service (even if you don't play online) to "rent" games that Nintendo decides you really want to play (I'm sure people are jumping for joy at the prospect of playing a tennis game).
I hope VC makes a comeback. It's long overdue. This is no replacement for it.
@johnvboy Doesn't change the fact that you're being condescending towards someone simply for not sharing your personal opinion. Just something to think about.
Pop'n TwinBee looks like my kind of game, a really colorful shoot 'em up, kind of like Twinkle Star Sprites. Will be giving this one a go when the update happens.
@WiltonRoots C'mon now, show some compassion for these impoverished children with no money to buy video games, whose only entertainment comes from the games released on Nintendo Switch Online!
@Fazermint Criticism is not condescension, especially when most of the ones being criticized are acting like children.
@Gwynbleidd nso’s problem is really not games imo, they’ve delivered there as far as I’m concerned. There’s like 70-80 games including special versions of nes games with online functionality, Japanese releases, and hidden gems that are being presented in a spotlight kind of way that Nintendo rarely does. Does online play new games blow? Results vary from ok to really bad. At the end of the day this service is $20 a year, which is beyond insignificant, but this has been argued to death forever now. If you see value in playing Nintendo games online, and in the titles they are offering, then it’s a good buy. If you don’t, then it’s not. The choice is yours
Why’s everyone upset?
Smash Tennis is the sporting precursor to Smash Bros right?
Is this a joke. Nothing for months and months and four games and no big hitters..... bro why you play me like this?
Decent games but so many SNES games - nintendo own ones to add... and they just give four? And only 2 SNES.... anyone defending this or attacking others for “not having enough money to buy games” are missing the point. Why do Nintendo take so long to get 4 ports working.... surely with the move away from monthly adding people were right to assume we might get batches and not just same amount before just months and months apart when the service was hardly mind blowing before
@Torakaka Nintendo Directs happen during the first half of the month never the second half
@Dr_Corndog First world problems...I know I know I should be a bit more considerate...
@NintendoPete Really? How?
@Dr_Corndog Condescension and criticism are indeed different. They are not, however, defined by the demeanor of their recipients, but rather by their own inherent verbal implications.
Seems Nintendo are bypassing the games people are asking for and scraping the barrel of SNES already. Why isn't Earthbound, Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario RPG on the app?. Going from monthly updates to "whenever we feel like it" updates, and nothing big.
On a plus, it's games many of us have not heard of.
@NintendoPete Sorted it! Thanks for the heads up, Pete! <3
@Dr_Corndog you know dude, glueing your tongue to somebody's a$$ just because he's more powerful is condescension. So it all depends on the motivation. Nevertheless, the good part is that it gives you zero credibility if you ever decide to call anybody childish just because they don't share your ideas (...ideas?)
@Fazermint wow I am impressed by ur smart
Wow. I've never played any of those games, so I'm okay with the offerings. However, I echo the majority of the sentiments here and hope that we get more notable titles that's been requested for a while now.
@The_Pixel_King
You're welcome I think they added the feature with the last update, finally
@ryobi85 I agree the slow pace & logic here is just insane! And the choices are very strange!
@BLD then maybe you should try them when they come out
I actually like Eliminator Boat Duel. Willing to give Popn Twinbee and Shadow of Ninja a chance. No interest in SNES Tennis. Hoping for more frequent updates and getting some blockbuster hits like the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. Though if I get Illusion of Gaia, that's good enough for me.
@denpa-ben Totally agree! I loved this game back in the day, and I still remember the intensity of trying to win the final race!
And the trophy girls, which might not seem very appropriate in today’s world...
This is why I let me subscription expire.
It's like they aren't even trying.
@MrMetroid I think Donkey Kong Country was made in conjunction with another developer (Rare) , so maybe Nintendo don't own full rights for it.
The longer it goes without DKC representation, the more I think there'll be some sort of collection sold separately. I know I'd buy it.
I'm one of the few guys really happy with this service, so I'l say it : these games are real gems, you have to play it (I just discovered Shadow Ninja recently, personnaly. What did I miss all this years !)
Also, "God Slayer" is a masterpiece, and I really hope an addition to our western library.
I’m not familiar with the tennis game at all but twinbee and shadow of the ninja are nice to see. Wish they’d give us more at a time tho. Any lack of donkey Kong country games on this service is criminal...and will we ever get GameCube?? That’d be a game changer Nintendo, and a first for your virtual console esque service. That’s something that would stir up some excitement.
@Priceless_Spork Guess I overlooked it at the time. Well, if it was on Wii but not Wii U; 3DS; or NES Mini, that means it's no longer available.
@Bobobiwan We got God Slayer in December. It's called Crystalis in the West.
@TYRANACLES I was wondering just now how big a Gamecube app would be to download to your Switch, if it came with a dozen games we'd probably be looking at about 12GB max...maybe more as they wouldn't have to be compressed to fit on those discs.
I haven't fired up my GC in a while, last things I played on it were Fight Night Round 2 and Burnout 2, plus a splash of Metroid Prime. 2 of those games will probably never see the light of day again sadly.
@Fazermint,
If you and others want to take it that way it's up to you or them, I am simply stating the service is not bad value for money.
@Fazermint True. I didn't say it was.
Seriously ? No seriously ?
The fate of the VC is truly depressing. I assume they really want to milk future mini consoles to their fullest, but it's clear they really have no plans and no faith for VC. They announce special controllers but never really produce or ship them. They stopped the feed of games down to this. It kind of feels like it's dead already, and never lived up to its Wii era heights. Or even WiiU era heights.
Just get me that SNES controller Nintendo!
Thanks, Nintendo. Maybe now all those who've been clamoring non-stop for Eliminator Boat Duel will finally shut up.
@Fazermint,
By the wayJust because I do not agree with you or others on this matter does not make me condescending, just something for you to think about.
@Stuffgamer1 Oh yeah, that's right !
I've got to play it again ! Thanks, dude ^^
@NEStalgia,
My issue with this was people were quick to complain about the individual prices for the original Wii virtual console games, the very same people complained that they had to pay another small fee to download the same titles again on the Wii U, now Nintendo offer a better cheaper alternative and they still moan, no pleasing some people.
@Bobobiwan,
Same as you fella, I would not be happy paying for all these games I have owned time and time again, so this way is much better option, and hopefully will grow with different systems over time.
Boat Duel is the main highlight here for me, but as someone who still has to face numerous region release discrepancies on modern platforms like eShop, PS Store and Google Play (and, as Frozen 2 digital release just informed me yesterday, even Amazon Prime - the more you know!), I welcome the news of any re-release bridging the gap to previously unvisited territories, too. Even if I don't reside in those territories.
More Twinbee will do me. Never played the rest so happy to get them.
Just buy an emulator machine preferably a handheld one, then you don’t have to worry about any of that rubbish.
@johnvboy Indeed. It seems that they will never be happy
@Baker1000 those NES Remix games were my favourite Wii U games, so much fun
@joey302 yeah just absolute second rate games! Quite funny how bad they are though
M.U..L.E is the best NES game. That would be great online.
I never got "Earthbound Beginnings" on the Wii U, so I'm hoping that shows up eventually.
Hoping for games like dk country, pocky and rocky, soulblazer etc.. 😬
Wow, I bet everyone is feeling good about NSO now! /s
WoW that Eliminator Boat Duel was fun already back in the day and addictive
I guess they decided to get to the bottom of the barrel first?
I wish they would localize some of those Japanese only titles, like Fire Emblem or Famicom Wars, although I realize that's probably a very difficult task, dealing with ancient code (Relic said how difficult it was to code in a new character for DoW2 last stand mode even though the game was only a few years old by that time).
I guess Square doesn't let Nintendo release their old games in their service, which is why there is no Chrono Trigger yet. I have a sneaking suspicion that if Square does release CT on Switch, it will be the awful mobile port again...
@johnvboy Exactly my feeling. I have paid so many times, so many versions of these titles over the years and the platforms. I'm a big Virtual Console lover, maybe I'm spending even more time on these retro titles than on the modern games of our age.
So, I think this economic model works for me. I also like the idea that you can't miss games (if you unsuscribe for a month or two), cause it's just a vault destined to grow bigger and bigger.
And finally, you said it yourself : people use to forget that you pay for the online service (like to play online SmaBro or trade Pokémon, or whatever). So if somebody wants to criticize the service, criticize that : the online aspect of switch (which can clearly be improved, let's be honnest here).
But these games are just bonuses. And for what it takes, well... I'l take them.
Personally I always wanted to play Pop N Twin Bee since I first saw it on the cover of an issue of Super Play. And me and my brother used to play Smash Tennis a lot, so it'd be fun to revisit.
@MrBelmont oooh, forgot about those. Might be time to fire up the old Wii U tonight
@Stuffgamer1 There isn't much to quality test, though. Flawless NES and SNES emulation has been a thing for years, and they have a lot of experience making emulators run well considering they've already sold emulated games on the Wii, Wii U, 3DS and New 3DS. Once you have an emulator that works properly, all you have to do is add ROMs. In fact, that's exactly what they're doing, because when they add new NES and SNES games to their subscription fee, the emulator inside the package isn't updated (it doesn't have to be because it already works), only the ROMs are added, which, for Nintendo, is quite literally copying over the ROM files from their "All of our ROMs" folder to the "ROMs included with the NES/SNES emulators" folder.
@Bobobiwan,
Totally agree with you on the online service being improved, my point is I still feel it's great value for what you get.
You can a agree or disagree dont care either way. But if nintendo dont step up not just there online service the switch is going to end up like the Wii U. Fun at first than boaring. Especially with the new ps5 and xbox soon to be released gl nintendo
I want Switch Online GBA!!!
Still pass from me.
@johnvboy you need to stop being so content with low level mediocrity as it has a detrimental effect on those of us who actually want a good service. Or at the very least, stop voicing your content as if it's actually "good enough".
In the same way you think my being "entitled" is a reason to tell me to stop talking, yours is as well. In fact more so, as mine and others discontent could lead to a better service for all - including you.
Also judging that you are a clear minority in this regard, it might be best to heed your own advice and pipe down.
I like being able to play things that I missed out on back then, But I do wish Nintendo would stop ignoring the SNES version of Wario's Wood's, That's literally the one game I played for years and was the main reason I kept getting SNES's, I was really sad that it wasn't in the SNES mini
@Razer,
You need to get a grip fella and realize that Nintendo do not make the service for a small minority on the internet, who would complain no matter what the service offered, even if it was for free.
As i have said the service is not perfect but it's good value, I guess I just have such a backlog of games on my Switch, a library of games I have bought over and over again is just not that high on my list, but there does seem to be a pretty decent selection of titles to play, guess you and others have a lot more spare time than me.
@nintendoknife You're thinking logically. Nintendo has a history of wasting time and effort testing things that don't need it. They spoke before about the time it took to test VC releases, and I see no reason to believe they aren't doing it all over again in an obsessive effort to provide the highest quality even if the difference is non-existent.
@Bobobiwan But these games are just bonuses. And for what it takes, well... I'l take them.
I don't play online, the retro games are the only reason I subscribed.
@Zequio I always assumed that when they parted with Rare, they took full control of Donkey Kong. That would make sense considering they relinquished rights to banjo, conker, battletoads.
@MrMetroid maybe, sure, they have full control of the character, but Im not sure about the games themselves. I suspect there are some legal paperwork for Nintendo to work before they can republish them.
@Zequio Well they were able to include DKC1 on the SNES mini nothing else though
@WarioWoodsfan good point....
@Stuffgamer1 Haha, okay, you do have a point there.
I loved Smash Tennis! Was so good with 4 players using the multitap thing. Not sure how well it will have aged but looking forward to find out.
Looks like I'm the only one (almost)! Oh well.
@SortingHat,
What a shame that nobody outside of the core obsessives even cares.
@OorWullie Smash Tennis plays identically to Super Tennis only in that it's tennis. As someone that owned both and played them for hours and hours, Smash is far superior. The shot array is a bit better, the characters are more varied, and it general feels and plays a bit better. It's a bit more polished and the crowd response to winning shots is one of my favourite effects ever. Most of all, it's 4-player, whereas Super was only two. Hopefully it's 4-player on the Switch as my friends will get back into it. I'd actually say, Smash Tennis is probably the best tennis game ever.
