Today marks the release of the mobile phenomenon Puzzle & Dragons GOLD on the Switch eShop in North America.
The game features enhanced visual upgrades and all-new multiplayer modes built upon the foundation of the mobile hit. It's said to be the "ultimate way" to experience GungHo Online Entertainment's long-running franchise on the go, and with friends.
As part of the launch, GOE is hosting a limited-time sale on the North American eShop from now until the end of the month:
To commemorate its launch, Puzzle & Dragons GOLD, originally priced at MSRP US $14.99 / CA $18.89, is out now at a special launch sale price of US $9.99 / CA $12.59 until Jan. 31. Puzzle & Dragons GOLD is available as a digital download on the Nintendo eShop in the United States and Canada.
Puzzle & Dragons includes a single-player experience, made up of a full campaign that takes place over the events of the anime and features the protagonists Taiga and Ryuji as they struggle to make their way through the Dragons Champions Cup while unlocking iconic monsters along the way.
In addition to this is the ability to verse other players online in PvP mode. PvP fights have two phases. In the skill phase, the players decide the skills they want their monsters to use and then deal as much damage as possible to their opponent as possible when the puzzle phase begins.
Do you plan to take advantage of the limited-time sale? Comment down below.

It's more tempting now but I'm not in a rush to pick it up just yet.
@DockEllisD No prob! Most of the time the press releases we get only mention US/UK pricing. Occasionally they include CA/EU pricing. When additional prices are listed for other regions, I always try to include them.
If my backlog wasn't so big, i would pick this up immediately. Is playing online only with other switch players? Cross platform or mobile?
It's touch-screen only, wish it was also playable in TV mode
@dugan There's no mention of crossplay in the PR, so I'm guessing it's Switch PvP only.
...Handheld only....yeah, no thanks. :/
Kinda disappointing after the Mario edition we had on the 3DS. Can't say I'm the biggest fan of this type of game anyways, It's a type of game that is really big on mobile phones and it's not exactly the type of thing where I feel like I would want it on the Switch.
The mobile game was absolutely massive here when I first moved to Japan. But in the last couple years it's completely died off. At least in my area.
I don't understand why this is popular, it's match 3 with flashy animations, might as well add hunie pop to the eshop as its basically the same thing.
@Fido007 The game was fun for a while on mobole, but stamina killed the mood for me, that and there was no real player interaction at the time and no real story. You were just collecting stuff when they said you could.
@Kalmaro Yeah mobile games grindy af. I could see this being entertaining if you had to collect jewels from a farming mechanic and doing a matching game in order to get good rewards depending on your speed of matching/elementso that you match (match like 50 fire jewels get a fire monster) while having battles with some generic rpg turn based game smililar to pokemon, however by the looks of it the puzzle looks integrated into the combat, so it looks stressful - which for mobile games is their way to make you pay.
I purchased it! Super huge Puzzle and Dragons fan!
...but boy... the single player campaign is laughable, 4 battles?!?! Whaaat?
You can’t farm monsters like in Z or X, only pulls paid for with stars.
...the arena battles are fun though! (Which I guess is the draw)
I am sure this is ideal for hand held but I prefer a TV option.
Would love this on the 3ds
@Fido007 It's a match 3 with a unique spin. Most match games only let you swap with the closest block/orb/whatever to make a match, see Tetris Attack/Puzzle League and Candy Crush. PxD allows you to move piece anywhere in the field while also shifting the rest of the pieces while making awesome combos. Also the limited time tie-ins on the phone version has some of the appeal... Like Batman, DBZ, Sanrio, and others.
The issue with the last game was that by making it possible to obtain all the legendaries, I felt like I had less of an interest in playing since it was much easier to obtain them compared to the mobile version. It feels weird to say that since that should be a benefit, but the gacha mechanics activate the same dopamine sectors of the brain that simply isn't done in a standard game
With only touchscreen controls this is a pass for me. Just finished Puzzle Quest and it would have been too annoying with only touchscreen controls. If they add them in at some point I might get it.
Yeah, it would be nice if Nintendolife didn't say "NA" pricing when, in reality, the "NA pricing" does not include Canada. (NA = North America)
Been playing a bit of it and not entirely convincing that the 1v1 style multiplayer battles is a good fit for the series, but it's a bit of fun at the very least and priced fairly for what it is.
Would love a fully fleshed out single player Puzzle & Dragons game (like Puzzle & Dragons Z) on the Switch at some point though.
@JayJ To me the Mario edition one was really great! Not Mobile worthy to me for that version. Felt like a great puzzle game right for the 3DS!
@IceEarthGuard Yeah it's disappointing how they didn't do another Mario edition for the Switch.
Everybody seems to say that the single player is laughably short while they're selling it as "a full campaign".
Yikes.
But I guess saying it's a full battle game like puyo puyo champions is a bad idea.
I had fun with the Mario version on 3DS, so I'll definitely look at grabbing this in the future.
@neufel
I've just downloaded it on a whim and played for a bit. Single Player portion seems really small and simple. I lost in the final match but it only took 2 battles to get to the "finals".
You get currency after winning a battle and you use them to pull dragons for your sub spots. Your leader slot monster unlocks from beating someone in single player and I guess it's only a small number of summons that can actually be a leader which I'm disappointed about.
I haven't tried the multiplayer part of it yet.
@Dunan Thanks for the heads up!
Will it be playable on tv though or just handheld screen? if so i'm not fussed.
@neufel Anyone going into this expecting any sort of single player experience is going to be extremely disappointed. I was under the impression the whole time that it was purely a multiplayer-focused experienced and that any single player content would just be a throwaway mode, which turned out to be right. I think I'm actually finished with the game now (after maybe a couple of hours online) as it didn't really click with me as a really fun multiplayer experience (compared to the 100+ hours I put into Puzzle & Dragons Z), but it's about what I expected in terms of content for the low price point.
@YANDMAN It's handheld only. Puzzle & Dragons' gameplay wouldn't really be feasible with buttons (or motion). Need the touch screen.
@Liam_Doolan Thanks for the info!
@BenAV Ahh o.k, not for me then.
Is this a port or remake of the one on 3ds?
@matdub It's neither.
@Farts_Ahoy thanks forthe heads up.
I will probably get this anyway but expectations are tempered.
@Dunan thanks 👍
@Farts_Ahoy I am hella jealous. My parents named me Mat. Farts_Ahoy is heaps better.
