Yesterday's announcement and reveal of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Challenger #5 rounded out the first round of DLC fighters added to Nintendo's crossover brawler. While opinion on Fire Emblem: Three Houses' Byleth seems to be fairly mixed, he joins a huge roster of fighters from across the video gaming spectrum. Naturally, he has also found himself a place in the epic mural that's steadily getting updated along with every DLC drop. Spotted him above already?
As revealed first by the official Japanese Smash Bros. Twitter account, Byleth slots in just behind Metal Gear Solid's Snake and to the left of Street Fighter's Ken:
The mural has since been updated on the US Smash Bros. site. With another six fighters planned to be released over the next two years, there are plenty gaps left to fill yet, so you'll have to hold off on getting this made into wallpaper and pasted around your living room unless you want to add the newcomers as they're announced periodically until December 2021.
Byleth will be let loose in the game on 28th January, after which we can probably expect a new fighter every four months or so. Nintendo, eh? They're sure keeping the ball rolling with this one.

I was initially disappointed about getting yet another Fire Emblem character, but now I'm actually looking pretty forward to this. He looks like a lot of fun, and a lot of the close range sword fighters (Ike, Roy, Marth, Cloud) are my bread and butter.
Man I can't wait to find out who the rest of the fighters are.
I keep hoping when the game is complete that they will release the mural as a poster.
Geez, even his mural addition is disappointing. Look how bored he is. YOU’RE SURROUNDED BY CRAZINESS, WHY DO YOU LOOK SO BORED?!?!?
Poor Mii Gunner, barely gets a look-in in the mural now
That dude is running himself him into an early grave for that game and our happiness. Let him indulge his Fire Emblem fixation, what’s the harm!
My one suggestion would have been to end on a high like banjo and shove Byleth in the middle
Which sword is he again?
@gaga64
Apparently the character of Byleth is literally emotionless, or something.
Dunno, haven't played Three Houses.
@RupeeClock Really? Me neither. Well I guess that explains it. Still doesn’t endear him to me though.
Maybe once I actually get my hands on him I will be won over.
@Kwehst
The one holding two other weapons besides a sword.
This game is getting expensive. 60 for the base, 55 for the passes, 20 x the number of years you’re gonna want to play online, and that’s not even mentioning the controllers you’re inevitably going to have to buy since the joycons are so flimsy. The wallets 😰😰😰
Byleth seems like the odd one out in this fighter pack, being a Nintendo character as opposed to a third party addition. I reckon they had something third party planned for the DLC but for whatever reason it wasn’t ready on time. Therefore they’ve rushed out a backup plan. There are now 6 new characters for the next round - they’ve added on the other character to that DLC. makes sense to me.
@ottospooky That can't be the case. The Livestream for Byleth was recorded 2 months in advance, meaning it was done by November. And by then hardly any work was left to be done on the character. The last DLC character needed to be ready by February at the latest, meaning that any DLC character would have had 3 extra months of development time had Byleth not been the intended candidate. Which is most certainly the case since its Nintendo themselves who chose the DLC roster, not Sakurai.
@ottospooky I highly doubt that. Most likely all planned in early stages of development, same with the next round of fighters
@Ryu_Niiyama
Hell yeah! I buy it in right away
Hey, he’s blocking Daisy. Scoot over a little bit buddy.
In two years when this is completed, I'm ordering a print.
Boy... he looks so bored and uninterested in this picture.
Another "meh" for me unfortunately, so far Piranha Plant and Joker have been the only DLC characters I've wanted enough to buy, so quite happy I held off from buying the character pass up front. Fire Emblem seems a really anticlimactic one to end on, especially as there's already a blue haired, sowrd wielding Fire Emblem character in there already, but oh well.
Greninja's tongue is now in an...awfully strange spot...
@shonenjump86 He's blocking Daisy? I like him more now! 😉
@gaga64 Dude's actually still doing something like everyone on the mural, even if he's standing still. He's obviously comparing his sword and his lance (no, I'm not gonna try saying the names of the weapons because I'll probably get 'em wrong then get swatted by FE fans)
@patbacknitro18 Sakurai picks the dlc, he stated so in the video. He said each of the 5 he choose holds a very close place in his heart. He even showed of how big of a fan boy he is for Fire Emblems newest game, playing and beating it multiple times before the game ever even released to the public.
@mesome713 Um no, actually Sakurai did not pick the DLC. Sakurai made an official statement after the Fighters pass was announced that the higherups at Nintendo actually picked all of the DLC fighters. The higher-ups put a list together of characters they wanted in Smash, and Sakurai has been following that list since. Its purely by coincidence that the characters happen to be from series he loves, but Fire Emblem 3 houses was obviously only added in as a promotion for that game, similar to how Corrin was added in to promote Fates. As for Sakurai beating the game, he had to in order to get a feel of the character, grasp an idea for a moveset, and to also add in some fanservice. He does the same thing for every character he adds into the game.
Aw, I was hoping for Female Byleth on the mural. Wii Fit Trainer's still the only gender-swapper where female is the "main" form, I guess.
@RupeeClock @RupeeClock He/she is emotionless. He never speaks during conversations, except when you battle.
@DFaceG_Rebooted actually I think if anything, he’s wondering where Lucas keeps his snake
@LArachelDisciple I'm not sure why female Corrin isn't on the Mural, but the recent Fire Emblem games with Custom characters have been switching which gender is the canonical gender of the characters. In Awakening the canonical gender for Robin is male, in Fates the canonical gender for Corrin is female, and in 3 houses the canonical gender of Byleth is male. Though people seem to prefer female Byleth more, male Byleth was the first revealed and was the one most commonly shown in advertising and trailers. Meanwhile Corrin was most commonly shown as a female.
@LArachelDisciple Well Inkling is more often shown as a girl too, both on the mural and character select screen. It would be nice if Corrin appearrd as female by default too to match Fire Emblem Warriors
@patbacknitro18 We already know Sakurai chooses. Nintendo might give the green light, but Sakurai picks who he wants to add. Sakurai invited Joker into Smash because he loved Personal 5. Same with byleth, he was chosen by Sakurai and Nintendo accepts the invitation. Even Reggie has stated Sakura choses.

Sakurai, LITTERALY, said Nintendo themselves chose ALL of the DLC characters. He picked who to add for Smash 4, but NINTENDO chose the DLC for Smash Ultimate.
Not surprised he's in the better silent swordsman's shadow
@patbacknitro18 Nintendo does get final say. Sakurai is just tired of people whining about who he doesn't chose, so Nintendo decided to take the blame. But you can search on the intenet and see these are Sakurai favorites. And the next 6 will be his favorites also.
@mesome713 oh my god no, just no. Nintendo chose the DLC characters, thats it and thats all there is too that. Why would Sakurai say he chose what characters got into Smash Ultimate base game, but then say Nintendo chose who they wanted in Smash for DLC? That litteraly makes no sense at all.

Actually, a harder game at this point would be to "spot the NON-Fire Emblem character".
Blink and you'd miss him. Looks like Marth, let's be honest.
@gaga64
I would say where Lucas keeps his snake... but it's probably obvious...
I apologize in advance for any physical pain this comment caused.
My man is literally like "I didn't ask for this. But I have no choice." Kind of a perfect representation of Byleth and his/her reveal as a whole. XD
@DrJoson Oops, forgot about Inkling. That makes it more even, then.
Why not have female byleth in it?
So that's what, 8 fire emblem peeps? No more please, even if his moveset is different from the others. If we are going to give another Nintendo franchise a character, don't choose from Pokemon, Mario, fire emblem, or Zelda. They have enough. Give us something off the wall like Chibi-Robo, one of the bots from custom robo, or something. Maybe just stay away from Nintendo ip?
All the fighters: Yay we got another Fire Emblem character who joined the game sarcasm
Byleth: confuse
@Jasonmd what do you mean she is in there
or are u talking about the picture?
l just hope they could update or add a fighter with a powerful gun that is worth to use. Like the gun fighters need more power with the bullets right now in the game.
@Mr_Persona yep picture.
@Jasonmd well they don't have the femal on there because the main gender is a boy. Same goes with Robin and Corrin.
@personauser93 Congratulations, you have discovered what DLC is.
