A new update for Super Mario Maker 2 has arrived and it adds a number of new multiplayer features that didn't make it to the game in time for its launch. The most exciting news is that you can now play with your friends online in either multiplayer versus and multiplayer co-op.
Apart from this, the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app is now supported, Joy-Cons can be used in a horizontal position, "Nearby Play" and "LAN Play" have been added, and various adjustments have been made. There are a number of other changes and fixes as well, covering areas such as Maker Profiles and Course Maker.
If you install this update, you'll no longer be able to match with players using Ver. 1.0.1 or lower in Network Play. Below are the full patch notes:

Was hoping for some bugfixes that are stopping me from creating my latest level. Also, there hasn't been any news of new content...what's going on there? :c
@sanya_exe
NoA confirmed on Twitter that new course parts on the way.
“ If the connection is unstable before Multiplayer Co-op or Multiplayer Versus starts, the match will be cancelled.”
So like 90 percent of the matches will be cancelled before they start, good to know.
Great update. Now I just need find some of these so called "friends".
@sanderev
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
GOOD ONE!
There's also a new opening cutscene where Luigi gets mugged by Mario and the Toads.
@Yoshi If 90% of your matches are lagging, its most likely YOU who is the lagger
Get a usb ethernet adapter
I was really thinking MM2 was going to be a big multiplayer game for me n my buds. The lack of original features slayed that hope. Finally! some nice little updates here... gonna have to get makin again.
@Toy_Link THANK GOD!! MM2 was a big dissapointment to me so far, and it might be improved. I think they put way too much focus on 3D world in the base game, so we might finally get the stuff we would, and arguably should have gotten in the base game. Bring on the ice flower, rexes, koopa kids, etc. I'm ready, Nintendo.
@Doktor-Mandrake if Nintendo can't design a console that can play online properly then they really shouldn't be charging you for the privilege. On Mario Maker matches lag almost all of the time for me and are virtually unplayable but I've had no issues in Splatoon 2 or Mario Kart, whilst on PS4 or Xbox I've never had a problem. Generally speaking when playing Gears 5 my ping hovers around 14ms so I'd love to know why Mario Maker 2 is unplayable on the same network
@carlos82 Are you playing on wifi when playing Gears 5 as well?
Also Mario Maker 2 uses Peer 2 Peer.. So yes, whoever has the weakest connection, it will be like that for everyone.
Keys word I said to him were "most likely".. Because with Peer 2 Peer, yes, whoever has the worse connection WILL lag the game for everyone, and that same person WILL have lag every single match.
You can blame it on Nintendos "servers" if you like.. Simple fact is, there are no servers, as it uses Peer to Peer.
@carlos82 Oh and by the way, both Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe both use the EXACT same methods as Mario Maker 2.. All 3 games use NEX

Nice, so maybe now is the time to actually buy the game lol
@Doktor-Mandrake I said nothing about servers, I do know that Mario Kart and Splatoon hide the issues better. I've had plenty of games where players in Mario Kart magically appear in front of me but at least they designed it so that its playable. On Mario Maker more often than not it's like a flip book with half the pages missing, so hopefully this update will get rid of all those people playing on public Wifi in shopping centres or whatever horrible network they're on. My Xbox is currently wired in but my stepson who has his upstairs isn't and he has no issues playing online with me on that 😉
@carlos82 I agree with you that nintendos online experience is sub-par, they shouldnt be charging for it
In terms of MM2, I think this update will help though, everytime I've had lag in that game its when connectioned to certain users
I could be playing with the same 2 people, over and over, and always smooth, then someone randomly joins and kills it with lag, had that happen very often
If not caused by someone having weak connection, perhaps its matching people up with me that live nowhere near me
No idea why MM2 is more laggy then MK8 or Splatoon 2, since I think all 3 would use P2P.. Maybe Mario Maker 2's netcode isn't as good.
Just about to try update now, I've had a mixed bag, had lots of really good matches with no lag, had lots of really bad ones that are unplayable as well.. Hopefully this update fixes that.
@Doktor-Mandrake In SMM2 all action happens in the same "stage" (the entire stage gets sent between all users, and location info, etc) for games like Splatoon 2 and MK8 there is actually a lot less information to be sent.
@sanderev makes sense, dunno if its just me but I find the new smb theme tends to be the worse for lag
Edit: so first match was smooth, just on 2nd match and theres still lag
Cool. I just got it yesterday as I was waiting for more physical copies to show up locally.
@sanderev None of my friends play MM2, so i need to rely on public matchmaking which MM2 don't support.
Even LittleBigPlanet 1-3 had public online with up to 4 players in co-op.
Nice, it's actually possible to use Course Edit in handheld mode without having to buy a stylus now.
Yes! I got it for online co-op with friends only and it's been sitting around on my shelf ever since. Glad to hear the day's come and I can delve into it with my buddy. This should be a fun ride.
MM2 is utterly fantastic, and I am glad to hear of the updates. The only reason I dropped off was to explore every nook and cranny on Koholint Island.
@Doktor-Mandrake I've got one of those, but that doesn't help at all. Nintendo this up big time.
Meh, I'd rather play with randos. Less pressure that way. I'm eager to see how badly I play with the single Joy-Con on its side!
Still no amiibo support? What the hell Nintendo??!!!
I want the carrying stone block objective for level clear. Why is it only in story mode?
@Moonlessky thank you. Amiibo support and the insane amount of awesome character sprites make the original better than 2. Talk about endless creative potential. Everytime I see a "Play Link's Awakening in Mario Maker 2" video I'm thinking, shut the hell up... We could've actually done that in part 1. I'm way salty about the removal of amiibo in 2.
wow took them forever...guess they really only started development on this after the backlash...
But still Does it fix the lag of internet.
Nice to know. I've got a level (course, but I prefer level) that I have been working on. Just another reason to keep playing SMM2.
@NImH i know! Honestly at this point I would be happy if the same amiibos supported in the first game got patched into this one. But they really should add more and maybe have them available in more styles.
