If you're hoping to get your hands on a new Mario game or two in the not-too-distant future, it looks like you might just be in luck.
Nintendo has posted two new job listings on its official Japanese site today, calling for talented individuals who know a thing or two about level design. The first listing is for a 2D action game, with the second being for a 3D action game. Both jobs are searching for someone who can create courses and complete gameplay and bug checks.
Apart from the job listings which appeared specifically for the Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel a few months back, Nintendo usually avoids revealing which game or series any potential jobs are intended for. However, a tweet advertising the 2D level design job just so happens to show off lots of images from 2D Nintendo games - almost all of the images selected are of Mario titles.
The 3D listing also features an image of Mario, although we'd argue this looks a little more like a generic picture simply relating to the company.
Obviously, we can't know for sure what these listings are for, but it'd be pretty silly to assume that Nintendo wouldn't be working on new Mario games as we speak - and that 2D listing has us particularly intrigued.
Are you hopeful for more Mario games in the near(ish) future? Is that a silly question? Let us know what you'd like to see next from the series in the comments below.

Nintendo should advertise the job ad in Mario Maker 2.
Nintendo are always working on a Mario game so this is no surprise.
I wouldn't mind a new 2D game but I think it would need to be a complete reboot and something completely different to what we have seen before, otherwise it could just feel like a Mario Maker level pack. Perhaps a Metroidvania style 2D adventure game with a focus on platforming or something?
Honestly, trying to second guess Nintendo is usually completely futile though.
If they want a 2D Mario designer, just look through the millions of Mario Maker 2 levels, surely one of them would want a job
A DLC expansion for Mario Maker 2 would be cool so like you get a new game style and with it like 80 Nintendo made levels in that game style.
They really need to try something new and drastically different with the 2D games as they've grown pretty stale now for me. If it's just more of the same then I'll stick to Mario Maker.
@Ooccoo_Jr agree. The whole "New" series is absolutely stale now.
@BenAV
I agree so much. Time to move on with so many indie games looking better than NSMB
If they are working on a new 2D Mario, i hope its something more innovative than a NSMB-Title, i mean although these games are fun they all look and play the same
They do need to actually create something new for the 2D Mario series. The last 4 games have been basically the same thing repeated.
More MARIO 2D more odyssey as well please.
Super Mario World 3, please. :3
i’ve been thinking for a while that 2d mario needs a reboot, nsmb is the most notoriously stale and soulless thing nintendo has ever done. make a new 2d mario that controls and looks a bit like the 3d world theme in smm2, with tropical freeze-like presentation and a unique aesthetic to it.
I think this doesn't mean a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g. If they would work on a 2D game that has nothing to do with Mario, of course they would use Mario for the job's ad.
It's their mascot and what better way to hide what they are really working on ?
As for the 3D Mario game, of course they are working on one. They're always working on at least one or two 3D Mario at a time since 1994-1995.
Also add a story where peach doesnt get kidnapped. Snoring boring 😴😴😴
I'd like to see an open world mario game with no levels like zelda botw.
Super Mario World remake... Just kidding, that game is already perfect and should never be changed.
I'd like to see it in a similar style to the guy that did the fan project that was based on the 90's cartoon
I hope they steer clear of “New” Super Mario Bros, Id much prefer something akin to Rayman Origins as far as aesthetics go.
Please please please PLEASE be Galaxy 3, Nintendo!!!!!!
Proper 2D, none of that generic looking NSMB look and play. The DS one was the best but each entry was just creatively void.
Personally I'd love a true Super Mario Land 2 sequel, it is a very unique and underrated Mario platformer.
As for 3D, hopefully not another 3D World which for me was just Nintendo going through the motions.
I would love to see Nintendo do a 2D Mario with an art style similar to Wario Land Shake It. Give it hand drawn graphics in the style of the 80s/90s artwork. It's time to take the 2D series in a new direction
@BarefootBowser I would love to see a sequel to SMB2 as well. It's my favorite of the original trilogy. It's differences from the rest of the the series still make it a stand out entry.
Another 3D Mario is pretty much guaranteed. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a port of 3D World first. It's a no brainier and would be a perfect fit for the Switches focus on local multiplayer.
@MarioFan02 with an had remake of the first two Galaxy games as a taster for what’s to come. Oh & also a 3D World Deluxe Edition. I never owned a Wii or Wii U so I would desperately want these games on switch. & if the Galaxy games can only be played in docked or tabletop mode. That’s fine by me since that would be closest to the control scheme the originals were designed for.
Yesssssssssssssssssssssssss, they should make that 90's Cartoon one real.
There’s been a New Super Mario Bros. game for each system since the series debuted on Nintendo DS, including the Wii U, which missed a lot of games that are usually on every system. However, there hasn’t been a single one since the launch of Super Mario Maker. So it’s hard to predict whether there will be a new one on Switch or not.
@EvilRegal Galaxy 3 would be cool
Super Mario 64 remake for the Switch!
Can't wait to see what they are. I'll be especially excited if they make a 2D Mario game for Switch that's more unique compared to the NSMB games. After all, the Switch just got a port of NSMBU so it makes sense that they'd give 2D Mario a brand new direction!
As for 3D Mario, I enjoy all the 3D Mario games so I'll always be pumped for the next one, be it Galaxy 3, 3D World 2, Odyssey 2, or something else.
Please no more "New Super Mario Bros". We want a new style, with new mechanics, and new powerups.
I also wish there were a new game based on the old Wario Land games, except multiplayer.
I would love to see Mario done in a hand-drawn art style, sort of like Rayman Origins/Legends. I feel like it would be a welcome change of direction, while still being able to maintain the core gameplay mechanics. It would feel so fresh and new, yet still familiar.
Probably new Mario Run levels
@Ooccoo_Jr A metroidvania style Mario game? Sign me up!
Probably release a new console before all these new games come out.
What if they're both for a 3D World sequel?
Now's your chance to hired these guys Nintendo. I would die happy if the new Super Mario games looks and plays like these.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Super Mario Wild would be a great title for an open world mario game at this point
A new Wario Land and Wario World would be awesome to see.
I'd really like to see a 2D Mario platformer done entirely in Yoichi Kotabe's art style with traditional animation. That would be cool.
Though more content like Super Mario Odyssey or Galaxy would be fine, just no more "new" Super Mario Bros please.
"Hey look, a new Mario game"
"Don't love your tone, but actually no new Mario game today" brings back some Reggie memories
Odyssey/Cappy was amazing, I would hope that Nintendo has already started a sequel to this months ago for a release in 2020 (Tokyo Olympics or the holiday period) timeframe. P.S. Ring Fit (Oct 18th) is going to be a sleeper hit.
Rather than a new 2D Mario game, I'd like to see a brand new platformer IP from Nintendo.
If it's "just" Mario, I would like them to go with a new art style and a more unique gameplay, maybe mixing it with other genres.
It's pretty obvious that the next 2D and 3D Mario games are in development. The only question is what they will be themed after (Another NSMB? Another Mario Maker? A Mario Odyssey sequel? A return to Mario Galaxy?)...
It's about time Nintendo revisits Super Mario Bros 2 (USA), either as a remake or a sequel. They don't have to see it as the NEW 2D Mario series, just a spinoff. I love classic style 2D Mario, but I also loved this unique take on Mario. If the Cuphead devs really do want to make a Nintendo game I think this one would be right up their alley. THEN maybe Nintendo can commission them to do that Zelda 2 remake they expressed interest in. Also, SMB2 sort of had a "metroidvania lite" vibe to it, maybe they could expand upon that aspect of the game... but more like Metroid than Castlevania. Oh btw, I'm all for that hypothetical SMB Super Show version of 2D Mario, I don't know how possible it would be but one can dream...
2D Mario with new artstyle, please? Oh, and Mario odyssey 2 (or sunshine 2) will happen.
