One of Nintendo's latest success stories on the Switch is Fire Emblem: Three Houses. When it launched in July, it topped sales charts worldwide and received glowing reviews from fans and critics alike. Just like other major Nintendo releases, this one has additional content to keep players invested over a long period of time.
While the first patch for the game was a relatively minor one, Version 1.0.2 includes a sizeable amount of new and updated features as well as plenty of general changes. One of the highlights is the Maddening Mode, and then there's the new expansion pass content unlocking new items, auxillary battles, a new song and new attire (including glasses for Byleth). There's also a voice update for this character, which you can read more about in our previous post.
Last of all are some general changes, which remove a number of bugs and even revise some text. Get the full rundown below:
- New and Updated Features
- Added Maddening mode to the New Game difficulty options. Note that if you clear Maddening mode without selecting New Game +, the title screen will change.
- Increased the bonus Renown for selecting New Game + at the start of the game.
- In addition to the usual difficulty bonus, 10,000 Pts. will now be added each time you clear a path.
- The max threshold for bonus Renown is now 50,000 Pts.
- If you already started playing using New Game + before applying the DLC data, 10,000 Pts. per cleared path will be added to each save slot the first time it is loaded.
- Up to Ver.1.0.1, only the type of path cleared was saved but not the number of clears for the same path, which will now be saved applying the DLC Ver.1.0.2.
- Added Goddess Tower to the Event Gallery in Extras. Use the ZL/ZR Buttons to select the Goddess Tower page, then choose a character event to replay.
- The Event Gallery is unlocked once you’ve cleared the game.
- Implemented new English voice for Byleth (male).
- New Expansion Pass Content:
- A new set of items
- You can receive this set of items as DLC Supplies from the bed in Byleth’s Personal Quarters. Each save file can receive these supplies: Sacred Galewind Shoes (Movement +1), Sacred Floral Robe (HP +7), Sacred Snowmelt Drop (Strength +3), Sacred Moonstone (Speed +3).
- Additional auxiliary battles
- There are five additional auxiliary battles in the Expansion Pass: Battle at Lake Teutates, Battle in the Forest, Battle at Gronder Field, Battle at the Sealed Forest, and Battle at Conand Tower.
- Depending on your progress, one of them will be listed in the battle-selection screen.
- These additional auxiliary battles will be marked with the yellow “!” icon in the battle-selection screen. As a bonus, these battles may give you status-up items, such as Ailell Pomegranate, and an increased Gold reward in addition to the Bullions.
- All maps will consume one activity point to start.
- A new song (Corridor of the Tempest)
- You can access the new song (Corridor of the Tempest) from the System menu while you are in an auxiliary battle. You can also listen to it in the Music Library.
- New attire/accessory (House Loungewear / Glasses for Byleth)
- The new attire (House Loungewear) is for the protagonist and students. Swap outfits in Byleth’s Personal Quarters from the Journal. These outfits are only wearable inside the monastery, or for specific unit classes during battle (this varies by character).
- The new attire cannot be sent along with a traveler.
- The new accessory (Glasses) can also be put on in Byleth’s Personal Quarters. They can be combined with any other attire. The glasses can be worn in the monastery and during battle.
- A confirmation message is now displayed when you abandon an item during battle.
- A new set of items
- General
- Fixed the bug that caused the game to freeze when Fortify was used while equipped with a certain skill.
- Addressed the incorrect character design in event still images.
- Fixed the bug that incorrectly displayed a Caspar line as Linhardt’s during the White Heron Cup.
- Fixed the bug that displayed a “TBD” message when mastering combat.
- Fixed the bug in the cut-in sequence for a CRITICAL attack.
- Fixed the bug that prevented Rescue magic from working properly to move an ally to a space near the user.
- Fixed the bug that accidentally let the player enter the closed-off desk corridor in the Cardinals' Room.
- Some text has been revised.
- The gameplay has been improved by addressing a few additional bugs.

Yay!!! So excited for this and the coming content updates coming for this wonderful game. I couldn’t be happier with how the first fire emblem mainline game to the switch is turning out! I’m very eager to get back into this game once I’m finished with astral chains!!!
Hope there’s some cooler stuff coming. Like a better frame rate in the school.
Went ahead and got the DLC tonight. I've already put in something like 250+ hours (and I still have a route and a half to play through)--there's really no way I'm not going to be excited for the additional content when it comes out.
Looking forward to trying Maddening for my final route.
@Zach777 Homebrewers had released a mod that made this game run at 60 fps.
Okay cool, glad you guys shared this too! I was worried you were only going for the drama!
This is perfect timing, since I just started New Game + a couple days ago!
How about a mini game to farm smithing materials that I never seem to get with the limited monster interactions
"Fixed the bug that incorrectly displayed a Caspar line as Linhardt’s during the White Heron Cup."
Huh, never knew that happened. Kind of reminds me of when Daichi's line was incorrectly displayed as Joe's.
You can really tell that Koei Tecmo had a hand in developing this game.
So, aren't they going to fix the awfully small text I've been hearing about?
I like the new content but I was really hoping for some new master classes / lvl 40 classes.
@Xelha After you cleared the paralogues for the route the Battle option is only ever used to boost underperforming units or to gain an extra couple levels for the next map. So using points is already a hard thing to do if you're just looking to gain a couple of extra levels unless you're doing the ones that cost points which is already rather questionable if they're worth doing. These add an extra something to spend your points on and might be worth checking out.
@nintendolie
Are you Nintendolying?
I finished my first run a day before the DLC, but now I need to try again in Maddening mode without the New Game+ just for a tittle screen??? Challenge accepted! I guess Astral Chain will wait a little longer
Got the game today,
I said to my self if the hype is gone and im still interested that I whould get it.
And here we are still very interested
@DDFawfulGuy
That is overblown. The text is fine in handheld mode. I wear glasses and struggle with quite a few games in handheld (here's looking at you darkest dungeon). There are a few places were the font color could be better chosen but overall there is nothing wrong with the text in this game unless you are straight up blind.

No mention of performance improvements. The frame rate in the school sections is truly terrible and I'm amazed it ever got the through cert.
@QuickSilver88 It's far too small in handheld mode. It's as if the devs never tested it on anything other than a decent sized TV.
It's a fun game but a really unpolished one. Unusual for a second party title. It feels unfinished.
Why do the new Auxiliary Battles cost points...? Well that's a disappointing waste...
This may just be me but does anyone notice that the Loungewear look more like Soccer Uniforms?
@Xelha That's fair. I mean I don't use the Battle option too much already unless I have a few units falling behind or I really need an extra nudge for an upcoming map. I'm more waiting for the substantial new content DLC like extra characters or Paralogues. Until then I have no reason to really buy the DLC, but the extra battles are nice for those who are into it I guess. I just don't have an opinion on it one way or another.
Finally. I've been waiting until a harder difficulty to do the two other paths. But come on, ive still got astral chain and bl 3 comes out Friday. I guess fire emblem has to wait a bit.
@Xelha Well, the extra battles were more for those who wanted to level more. The problem was the game was so easy that doing literally any extra fighting at all turned the game into a slaughter towards the second half. Hopefully maddening adds a reason for them to exists because I agree, my experience was much worse from doing them. Nothing could touch me after about chapter 15
@ramu-chan I never noticed. Was it bad? I mean, for the switch I have pretty low standards just given the hardware, but it never lagged nor did I notice it really ever dip so far below 30 for long enough that I cared. It helps a bit that if you fast travel everywhere you don't really stick around in one place to notice.
I was loving this game up until around chapter 16 or so. It got boring quick as I was way too op and there became no need to bother engaging in tasks at the monastery.... to be fair I was playing on normal mode— I’ll give it another go on hard, or should I try maddening???
@nintendolie no need for that, please be more respectful.
I picked up this game a week ago and have put 25 hours in already. I can't believe how much enjoyment I get out of every aspect of this game. Just when I'm feeling ready to move on to a different play-style, my current task ends. I refuse to automate anything and I've been doing my best to complete as many quests as possible on my free days, so I think I'm gonna end up being one of those 70 or more hours per play through kinda players. Is this my favourite game since BotW and Hollow Knight? I think so.
