Yesterday, we reported on the news that the upcoming Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair will employ over 60 'tonics' to change the way the game looks and plays. Tonics were a part of the original Yooka-Laylee, too, and it's great to see them return in this new title.
Today, we can exclusively reveal another of those 62 tonics. Playtonic has kindly shared some screens with us that showcase the 'Googly Eye' tonic, which – as you might have guessed – makes all of the enemy's eyes massive.
Of course, long-standing Rare fans will know that the company is (in)famous for its googly eyes, so it's nice to see that proud heritage referenced here. In the original Yooka-Laylee, Googly Eyes was an enemy that could attach itself to in-game objects and bring them to life. It would seem that in the new game, they've gained the ability to possess other enemies. However, the Googly Eyes aren't just a cosmetic change in Impossible Lair – they also give each enemy an additional hit.
"We just wanted to give people ways to not only have fun but be a bit weird, too," says Playtonic Engagement Director Daley Johnson. "We've got a bit of a reputation for putting googly eyes on everything, so we wanted to empower our players with the ability to do the same."
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair hits Switch on October 8th.

I think this game will be a real winner. Not only does it seem to have a much tighter focus than the original game, but it also has a much more consistent aesthetic/art style too. Doesn't hurt that the music is made by David Wise, I've listened to that first trailer many times just because I like that tune so much for some reason. I hope it lives up to what it's been showing us so far.
Am I the only one that thought of the "Googly Eyes" song from Kinect?
Anytime I heard the word Tonic it makes me think of Tonic Trouble. Making me wish Ubisoft would invest time into a sequel to that game. After all, it was the testing ground for Rayman 2.
If my backlog wasn't so large I might consider this...it's a shame. Game looks incredible tho!
@Supaguy I really agree! I'm really curious how it'll play too, it seems like a unique concept!
I like it. Seeing enemies with huge googly eyes makes me giggle.
That tonic makes it look like the enemies are possessed by Cappy or other ghosts from Bonneton.
Man you guys really want to know it's exclusive lmao.
"Today, we can exclusively reveal another of those 62 tonics." It won't copy it italicized but i'm surprised it wasn't put in bold and all caps as well haha.
This looks like it's aping Tropical Freeze's style, but if it's anywhere as good as that game, I won't mind one bit.
@Joker13z And underlined! 😂
looks fab and would be rude not to pick it up as it's released on my birthday
I stayed ticked for a long time about the whole nonsense with the first game. But I have to say this one is looking pretty good. I may pick it up.
I may be more excited for this than for the original Yooka Laylee I Kickstarted
The PAX demo for this was quite fun. Very Donkey Kong Country-ish
