The Pokémon Company has shared fresh details on Pokémon Sword and Shield as part of its World Championships event taking place as we speak.
Most of the new details can be found in this brand new trailer above, but we'll run through them for you below:
First up, the previously announced Galarian Weezing will have an ability called Neutralising Gas which neutralises the effects of all other abilities. Useful abilities like Levitate can be completely undone by the new ability, presenting a whole bunch of new things to think about in battle. Also, Corviknight has the hidden ability Mirror Armor, which reflects any stat-lowering effects.
Two new held items have been revealed. The first, called Room Service, lowers the Pokémon's speed during Trick Room, while Eject Pack makes your Pokémon switch out if its stats are lowered.
A new move called Breaking Swipe has been revealed which lowers the attack of all targets hit - luckily for the user, it can hit multiple opponents in one go.
On top of that, the Pokémon Battle Stadium has been revealed. The Battle Stadium allows you to connect to the internet and battle against Trainers from all over the world. Features like Rental Teams and Online Competitions will also allow for different ways to connect to other Pokémon Trainers. It's worth noting that you'll need a paid Switch Online membership to access this feature, but you won't need to set up a Pokémon Global Link account.
The Battle Stadium will offer Ranked Battles, Casual Battles, and online competitions. You can read all about it right here if you're interested.
Finally, it was also revealed that Sword and Shield will be the official video games used for competitive play during the 2020 Play Pokémon Season.
So, that's your lot. There's quite a lot to take in, but make sure to share your thoughts with us in the comments below. Looking forward to the Battle Stadium? Scared about Galarian Weezing's ability? Exciting times.

I wonder if Terravolt, Turboblaze, and Mold Breaker can ignore Weezing's ability.
Neutralizing Gas sounds to be exactly the same as Mold Breaker.
But there may be a distinction, such as in double battles, a levitating Pokémon might become vulnerable to ground type attacks from anyone, as opposed to just the Pokémon with the Mold Breaker ability.
The big things here for me were the very nice variety of Pokemon confirmed in the game. Some of my favorites like Milotic, Flygon, Haxorus, etc...
Makes me think my initial assumption of around 350 Pokemon might be way lower, and instead it might be more like around 500.
Either way, I am real glad that from a battle standpoint, this will be a real full meat Pokemon game. Let's Go Eevee and Pikachu just didn't cut it.
I just hope they make it easier than Sun and Moon for finding random opponents for 6v6 singles and don't only support 4v4 doubles.
Neutralizing Gas is good for doubles, but in singles I'd MUCH rather Levitate.
Looking forward to this game more and more.
Imagine Slaking or Regigigas paired with Galarian Weezing...
@RupeeClock Agreed, I'm fairly certain you hit the nail on the head as to how this ability is different. Mirror Armor on the other hand is sadly just a nerfed Magic Bounce. It's still pretty good though.
@Xelha someone sounds salty.
'Dynamax Pokémon play a dynamic role in Ranked Battles, too!'
So it's shoved down our throats if we wanna play Ranked. Cool. No thank you. No good news here as far as I'm concerned, only confirmation about new abilities and such, which is expected news rather than good news.
They e really gone to town on the attack animations! Some of these look great.
Im more excited for town at this point...
What's the point if the game looks terrible in the first place?
@Lizuka I came here to write that very thing! Gotta love that giant sea slug.
was really hoping for more experimentation in this game, don't blame Gamefreak for playing it safe but there is very little to draw me in given how many times i have played this same game over and over!
@RupeeClock also a pokémon with poison heal should now take damage if it’s poisoned.. just as one example, im sure there’s many more such as wonder guard, magic guard, magic bounce.. that ability basically makes it like gens 1-2 while weezing’s in battle
Pokemon are correctly scaled in the overworld, but retain their downscaled 3DS sizes in battle? Oh Game Freak...
This is the first thing they’ve shown us that has me a little excited for the game besides the wild area. Keep it coming!
Screw this news, GASTDON IS BACK!!!!
Haxorus, yes! One of my faves.
I think there will be a lot more Pokemon on the game than we were thinking.
@Xelha,
You sure do seem to have enough time to complain fella ,but if you don't like the game then fair enough,just hope when it's released you may feel a little different,as it's a shame for a fan of a franchise to hate one of their favorite games.
No Luvdisc confirmation? Boo!
I'm surprised Gastrodon made it in. I'm still hoping Game Freak will change their minds and plan updates for all of them down the line. There's no reason they can't do that, and really it's the biggest deciding factor for me.
I wonder if there are any plans to beef up Taurus. Playing Pokémon Let’s Go I remember how powerful it was back during Gen 1-3.
I've always liked the idea of stat changing moves and buffs but honestly I've found just hitting other Pokémon with the biggest stick is the most effective way of dealing with any battle.
Then again I don't play competitively.
This game is looking better and better with each trailer and news drop. Looking forward to it. Some of these new abilities could be meta changing.
Looks nice. I liked the new animation for trickroom. Looks pretty nice!
Also liking the meta impllications the trailer revealed! Looking forward to the game more and more
@Xelha
The rubbish thing was your saltiness about Pokemon Sword / Shield.
@koaeinferno
What is the point with your saltiness toward Pokemon Sword / Shield since from your previous comments last time ??
Anyway, yaay... Another Pokemon trailer.
Wait, so if you're doing doubles with each team with a galerian wheezing, do they make each others abilities blocked, thereby unblocking all abilities, but than the unblocked abilities get blocked again because they're no longer blocked and oh no I've gone cross-eyed...
Just waiting on Ditto confirmation.
Dunsparce better be in!
@Xaessya Ditto is literally in every game dude.
Hoping my favorite Espeon will be in.
Eject Pack is a really cool addition, honestly. I'll have to use it. There's definitely some effort going into these games, because a lot of the new abilities and Pokemon are really interesting conceptually.
Argh, November is so far away. I’ve not played VGC since gen 6 and can’t wait to get back in to it.
@Heavyarms55 honestly it was one of nuit theory that the "cut" pokedex content might itself be a result of the size of the regional pokedex potentially ending up larger than we expected honestly.
Every time we see a bit more, i'm starting to feel we'll be surprised but the final result because it's really starting to seem like they honestly put on a lot of effort into it in the end.
It could be just me but after the pokedex initial debacle it sounds like the Galariam forms and Team Yell reveal might actually be starting to buy them some good will back from fans.
Where's my boy Aipom! This sucks worse than considering to buy Greenland!
@Ludovsky I still hold that the Pokedex issue was a massive over-reaction. I agree that eventually they had to do this and I like the idea that in the future it will be similar to card game rotations with a mixture of returning and new Pokemon in each game. Just like how each season of Magic the Gathering, Pokemon TCG and Hearthstone all have some of the same cards always, and new cards too.
@RupeeClock it's not the same as mold breaker since it stops all abilities from activating rather than just ignoring abilities when you attack. No intimidate, (presumebly ) no weather etc.
@Heavyarms55 and to add to your comments.... honestly the game isn't even released yet and we're increasingly in an era of increasing "content" post-releases updates. Paid DLC and free content both.
So even if the game release under one form this year, who knows what it'll look like 6-18 months from now?
In the past it was almost unthinkable that a game's form or content within it's lifetime whereas now it increasingly is the norm. Even nintendo is catching onto that reality with both new games like Splatoon or now classic franchises like Smas Bros.
Perhaps it won't be the case with S&S but if so then it may well be the last Pokemon game to keep to "fixed form/content" lifetime and subsequent games may well have to adopt "post-release flexibility" as to content/form out of necessity.
Still waiting on skiddo and gogoat confirmation, until then, no deal
@Ludovsky I really hope these are the games where Game Freak realizes DLC exists. Ultra Sun/Moon should have been DLC on 3DS. Hopefully with S/Sh future content will be just DLC. People are gonna be way angrier than they were with the Pokedex thing if in 2020 Pokemon Gun/Spear/Armor/whatever is a 60 dollar standalone game that reuses 80% of S/Sh...
I love Pokemon, and always will but yeah, tell me when an official Pokemon Game with a challenge, a challenging rival, revival of the MANY features that have been stripped off each generation, like Pokemon Contests and Pokemon Amie Mini Games for example, and most importantly when ALL the Pokemon return. I will SURELY support the next Pokemon that includes these things by then. For the time being, however, I'll stick to Pokemon X and Y and Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon.
On a side note; GameFreak, you don't solve the 'Balance Issue' by removing Pokemon like Thano's Snap. You instead 'Adjust' the stats for the weaker Pokemon to at least be on the same footing as the more powerful ones. Yes, I'm talking to you one of my favourite Dark Types Lepardas/Liepard. No worries, one day you'll be able to face your Rival Mooland/Stoutland on equal footing. One day...
I mean, sure...let's increase Stoutland's Base Attack from Generation VI onwards and give NO boost whatsoever to that poor cat in the Dark. Dogs are MUCH better, am I right? >.> Stereotypical
