The latest entry in gaming's biggest Olympic crossover series, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, is just around the corner, and we're feeling more than ready to dive in and explore its sporting events - archery's our jam, thanks for asking.
While we wait for that release to arrive, though, let's take a good look through these new images released by Sega. We've got screenshots of the game in action, artwork for the main characters (we're loving the Peach-on-a-horse art) and even some 2D sprites which are used in the new title's 8-bit mode.

Why haven't we gotten a full-fledged Mario Skateboarding game? They've done just about every other sport out there, and no doubt Nintendo can make a better Pro Skater game than the official team can right now.
8-bit Luigi looks bald.
Also while I like the Storymode, I wish the party mode from Sonic 2012 Olympic Games would make a return. That mode was fantastically done.
Whoa those 8 and 16 bit charecter screenshots look insane
Hello there, lovely screenshots!
Is it just me, or does 8-bit Luigi look shorter than 8-bit Mario?
I haven’t been the biggest fan of this series, but the retro direction and activities have me wanting this game. I’m glad SEGA have kept it going this long.
Looking forward to this, can see this being the multiplayer game I've been waiting for.
I don't want to want this, but I want this.
I didn't expect I was going to buy this game. Even I am surprised but, yes, I'm gonna buy it. Everything looks so promising!
I just don't want it to be a joystick destroying game... (as strange as it may sound)
Was actually gonna pass this game by until I saw the inclusion of the retro mode. It’s weirdly made me want the game now. It’s on the list
Y'know, I haven't played a single one of these games as I just never felt compelled to for various reasons. If it has online, I may just go ahead and give this one a whirl via GameFly...
I played a bit of it this weekend and let's say that somebody that enjoys things like one two switch will probably like this too lol
This looks great, a few years back, I would have considered the Wii U version of Rio 2016 being the best looking one for this series. Again, will wait on it as I usually do with November releases. My family usually gives me a new game for Christmas.
This might be better then Super Mario party depending on the quantity of the games/events, ima have to get this... I can’t save money for the life of me too many great games coming out
I have all the others on Wii and Wii U, so it would be rude not to, wouldn't it?
Plus there's the fact that this game looks spanking gorgeous, and a jolly good time to boot. Karate, skateboarding, surfing... all interesting additions I'm gagging to play.
They look lovely. But are they as lovely as Alex from Nintendo Life? 🤔
Looking forward to new analysis of Luigi’s lunchbox
Btw, i never knew if Karate at Olympic used a pair of Karate "boxing gloves".
So when is the Sonic skateboard spin-off happening?
The last game I owned in this series was the original but this “classic mode” has me intrigued.
The only thing is I only have my original pair of joy-cons and GameCube controllers so I don’t know if that’s going to be an issue.
Actually looking forward to this. Especially that 8 bit mode... The more I see the more I like it..
Hedgehog Engine 2 being put to good use it seems.
@Mr_Kaos he also doesn't even have a body. Just arms dangling around with 2 gold nipples
Why mix 8-bit Mario and 16-bit Sonic? I feel like I'd rather see 16-bit Mario sprites used here instead. Or Sonic sprites done up like NES sprites.
I hope this game mixes in motion controls. If any series of games should have motion controls and show off JoyCon capabilities, it's M&S at the Olympics. I absolutely loved Sochi 2014 and how it tried to use the Wii U's unique controllers as much as possible. Rio 2016 was gorgeous to look at, but was somewhat disappointing in the fun department. I was really surprised that there was absolutely no game pad or motion control integration.
