DuckTales: Remastered Is Leaving The Wii U eShop On 9th August

Downloaded it today thanks to some people recommending it. Never played the original on nes but i did have darkwing duck which was awesome. For now this is on my backlog though

I got it years ago, still is really fun to play.

What's the logic of taking a game off a digital platform? Seriously, I'm curious what it hurts to just leave it up? Even if it sells one copy a year that's an extra $10 or whatever, right? Is there some sort of cost associated with just listing it I'm not seeing?

Glad to see this news getting out there. I already own this on Wii U physically. I stumbled across a copy and picked it up based on a friend's recommendation. Grabbed it today on Steam just to have this one on PC, nice to have the option to play it there too.

It is a good game, I played it on Wii U but will download it on Xbox One. It's funny how Cranky Kong shares with it some gameplay mechanics in the only game where he's a playable character, Tropical Freeze.

The end of a Disney-Capcom deal?

I definitely recommend it. It’s a fun game. Get it while you can, unless you can find a physical copy.

@kepsux Probably a deal between Disney and Capcom is about to expire.

I picked it up physically along with my PS3. Now when is the Disney Afternoon Collection coming to switch? Surely someone asked.

@kepsux The licensing agreement is probably expiring between Capcom and Disney and they chose not to renew it. So once that agreement runs out, Capcom is no longer legally allowed to sell the game at either digital or retail (new copies at least; they can't stop used copies from going around)

That's a real shame, but at least they are letting us know about this before the Game gets taken off the Wii U eShop and other Stores unlike some Titles that just suddenly vanished from the 3DS eShop. If only Europe got the physical Wii U Version...

We see, once again, one of the distinct downsides of digital. Capcom must have lost the rights to the title and thus have to stop selling it.

Already had it physically on PS3, but for that price digitally on my Wii U, it was worth double dipping.

@Heavyarms55 For new buyers anyway. We owners can still redownload the game and even then, the game has physical editions thankfully so it won't be lost forever.

Though a pity this rules out a Switch/XBONE/PS4 rerelease down the line.

I’m guessing that Capcom didn’t want to renew the license to Disney games. I guess I should download this on my Wii U before it goes away.

About $15-20 depending on the version (360 looks to be the priciest). Its probably Wii U owners that'll be more effected as the console isnt region free like PS3 and 360 through the XBONE.

@Angelic_Lapras_King Yeah now. What do you think is gonna happen once it's actually gone from the shop and people realize this is the only way to get it anymore? That price is only gonna go up. But to be fair, at least this option exists. Games like the Scott Pilgrim Vs the World game - which was real solid - that never had a physical release - are unobtainable now. Unless you bought it when it was still in eshops. (Glad I got it on my PS3)

I love it. I bought it on XBox 360 the other day on sale not knowing it was being delisted. Man am I ever so glad I did!!!!

@Heavyarms55 Exactly, its still better than no options. And from the looks of things, the physical PC version is super cheap so can't imagine that will spike much in price after the removal so there is that. Not to mention download code sellers with a zillion codes will probably still be valid for quite sometime (I got an After Burner Climax code a year after it was taken down and it worked like a charm.)

@DarkLloyd yeah, I made a mistake. I thought it released on PS4, but I guess it didn’t release on 8th gen consoles like Xbox One and PS4. My bad.

@Angelic_Lapras_King There's a physical PC version?! That I didn't know. I didn't know they still made physical PC games at all! I don't remember the last time I saw them in a store!

@Heavyarms55 Yup, and if its like most physical PC games, it'll stay as cheap as chips. Don't forget some places have crap Internet so for some, this might be their only option.

@Angelic_Lapras_King Oh I know. I just haven't seen physical PC games as an option for a long time. But I miss the old school big box packaging covered in art and stuff.

I have this game digitally on my Wii U, but i neglected for long time due to lack of the hype.

I had the Wii U version, but I grabbed the Steam version today because I don't turn on the Wii U too much anymore. It's a shame the Switch didn't get a version because I would have got that one as well

I recommend this title to anyone who loves a decent platformer regardless of whether or not you've seen the show. I picked it up on sale on my Wii U awhile back and haven't regretted it.

Such a shame that it's being removed from all storefronts. As others have noted, I suspect a licensing agreement is about to expire.

Awesome game!! So much so that afterwards when they released it at retail I just had to rebuy it again for Wii U, 360 & PS3!! Anyone who hasn’t played it yet should do so asap!! Would love to see it come to Switch with Disney afternoon Collection!!

Always thinking about getting this, But havent because i play the NES version regularly. Ive seen twitch plays enough to know the differences besides the graphics. Maybe ill get it now before its too late

But why? I've heard solid things about this game. I never picked it up because I had no connection to DuckTales at the time, but I've been enjoying the reboot series somewhat and have been hoping for an eventual Switch release. This makes me doubtful of that happening now.

I really fancy this game. Love the outstanding soundtrack. Love the original voices (most of whom are dead now), and I love the challenge. I heartily recommend this game.

Before one accuses Capcom of being lazy or the jerk here, consider this educated guess: Disney likely doesn’t want this game to ‘interfere’ with the current reboot.

Another Disney game delisted. Both Epic Mickey 2 and Power of Illusion were both delisted (despite as far as I’m aware 100% owned by Disney) earlier this year.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why i will always prefer physical copies of games!

I can still get a copy of the original “Ducktales” for NES made in 1989, but soon enough the 6-year-old remake will be unavailable.

One of the few games I actually bought digitally. I always have and always will prefer physical games over digital and this is a perfect example of the reason why.

I already got this game on any real platform I could so it been gone from the fake world is no big deal to me.

Went ASAP to buy it on steam and was surprised to see it was under 4$, so it was a purchase without hesitation!

Okay.. so this is basically the same with physical copies of a game I guess. Someday they just stop producing it or a licence expires. The only downside is it's hard or impossible to sell your digital copy to another person.

@kepsux you see in the game industry there's this thing called licensing and capcom lost those contractual rights meaning they are not allowed to sell the game further digitally

I really wanted to get this physically on the Wii U but alas it only released in the US. I got it physically for my PS3 instead. Either way this doesn’t affect me, but it does reinforce my stance that physical is best. It’s good you can still redownload it if you’ve already bought it, but how long will that last? I’m looking at you, Wii. I’m hoping my Wii never dies as I’ve got games like Contra and Castlevania Rebirth downloaded on it which you can’t get anywhere else. Not legally, anyway.

This is a great game. I recently played through the original on the Disney Saturday Afternoon Collection on Xbox one with my young son (who enjoys watching the original cartoon) so the fact that all the original voice actors returned to voice their characters in this remake is a real treat for fans young and old.

I actually completed this on 360/Xbox one backwards compatibility, as the Wii U version went a bit weird; the sound went funny and just held one note continuously. Has to turn it off and lost the progress I made, so swapped to the Xbox one to finish it.

Btw I also recently tracked down the original game...on Game Boy!

1.) It's an awesome game! I bought it digitally on the Wii U a few years ago. Purchases are tied to a machine though. If my Wii U dies I think I lose that game. I may try to find this physically for Wii U.

2.) The digital only future terrifies me. Capcom is literally saying "we're done with this game". Once it goes...it goes. This is why I buy physically as much as I can.

3.) I worry about the vibrant Indie scene down the road. Not all of those studios will survive and their games will disappear. I've started to buy a few of the big titles physically (Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Celeste) so I can have them in a decade.

See? And they want streaming service 24/7. Which means you pay only subscription and if you like or not the game you have spent 100hour is suddenly not there anymore. Some people will be very angry at this service. mark my words

Why are they deleting ut?

Is this a license thing again? Last year's The Last Remnant exodus proved to be making way for a remaster on newer hardware (including Switch), but this one had "Remastered" in its title from the start. Oddly enough, the Steam page also has zero warning of removal; is its deadline August 10 as suggested by the sale period?

5 bucks should be a steal for such a game anyway, but it's like every year sees my software spendings eventually toned down in favour of other expenses (I don't get an early September payday, after all) and goes "hold my beer".😏 Oh well, if these five bucks can bribe Murphy's law into bringing Duck Tales Remastered to Switch library as well...😆

Got it the day it came out and it's still on my Wii U. Not sure why it's being removed but I'm glad I have it.

GTA San Andreas is a perfect example.. digital versions like the one found on steam had songs REMOVED around back in 2014 when licenses for those songs ran out

I have bought a number of great games like this for my wii u and never played them.... so much stuff just sits on back log while I play....Rocket League.

So I don't buy games anymore.

Might this be related to that news article from a few months ago where Disney said that video games will no longer be an important platform for their franchises? Perhaps this is bigger than a Capcom deal, perhaps they're pulling the plug entirely!!

@joey302 I'm pretty sure you can still download the game if you own it, you just won't be able to buy it.

@youneedtocalmdow that is correct- but as you can see from several posts here, many gamers 6 years later still haven’t purchased the game - that’s the downside to this.

Already got it launch day on Wii U. I bought it on Steam, yesterday, because my Wii U was unhooked. I even got it for free one time on PlayStation Plus. All I can say is that the physical versions better not jump up in price. But then they will, and the time to emulate Scrooge McDuck and capitalize on it is nigh.

@joey302 I want to think that too but with so many games having so much of their game still needing to be downloaded a lot of games are not complete even in physical form. Breath of the Wild is a great example or Mario Kart 8. I hear ya on some games though but I kinda gave up years ago and just went digital. I do it with the knowledge that some day none of my stuff will be available to play if I don't have them downloaded. But at my age I finally stopped worrying about it, lol. I figure by that time I'll be too old to play or dead.

Happily bought and downloaded this on my Wii U when it was first released. Still wish it would have gotten a Switch eShop re-release, since I'm barely ever on my Wii U anymore. I don't even know if my GamePad has a battery charge in it at this point. I wonder why it's leaving all these digital storefronts?

As will eventually happen to all games only released physically, unless you're willing to pay hundreds for a game.
Unfortunately, neither digital nor physical do enough for preserving games for others to play. Even with the new trend of re-releases, obscure games and games by defunct developers are going to be left behind. And licensed titles never get included in Mini consoles or collections, for the same reason this is getting taken down.

@8bitforever lol that’s funny! So at 53 years old with a family and work etc, I never have time for DLC anyway but that’s just my own situation. Of course many gamers look forward to DLC and I get that. I buy PLENTY of digital games but usually those that aren’t available in physical form. I love knowing that 40 years later I can still plug a cart into my 2600 and have a quick session of Stampede or Kaboom!! Lol 😂
I’m leaving my Collection behind for the kids to sell off when I go! Too bad they don’t know much about what I have! 😕 have to educate them a bit!

@kepsux Yeah, that's the sucky side of licensed content (games where they buy a license from some other company for content - movies, brands, Disney brands, music, cars, whatever. That's why racing games are only for sale for so long and why series like Need for Speed and Forza are on an upgrade treadmill....the car/track license agreements are for X number of years, and when they expire, you can't sell the content anymore.) Same for games based on cartoons like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and such. The payment to use the brand is for a fixed period of time, after which they can't sell product using it anymore.

I bought it on PS3 the day it came out... I was very hyped for it as I love the original NES game and still own the cartridge... Overall, I was disappointed as the animation seemed sterile and the game felt less adventuresome.

I think part of the problem is the overly long cutscenes with poor pacing.

@Yorumi GOG doesn't help since it technically (legally) can't be re-sold like physical. I mean I know it "can" but in terms of the actual legal ramifications in technical terms it doesn't actually help because it still doesn't grant the same rights as physical.

I bought it Physically on the Wii U. I've had my fun with it. Beat it completely. I wouldn't mind going back and playing it again. Tho, I'd like for them to release it on the Switch too. Knowing me, I'd get it again.

If you guys are worried about the digital apocalypse there are physical copies out there.

I still have it on my Wii U, though I got it digitally. So it's not leaving its internal drive. This is a really good game

I have it downloaded digitally, but this is not ideal. Inevitably, hard drives crash and if there are no options to re-download it, the game (which I paid for with the intent to have in perpetuity) will functionally disappear.

For anyone jumping on the "game streaming" train, the services being proposed are for ACCESS ONLY. You will own nothing. When something like this happens (and with IP regularly changing hands, this will occur again), the game goes away. You will lose access at the whims of the streaming provider.

For anyone saying that we're being alarmist with concerns about a digital only gaming future, this is Exhibit A.

@joey302 Let's b honest here, how many gamers were actually going 2 purchase it after 6 years ?, I wouldn't know the answer but this announcement has certainly got a lot of people up in arms...just seems a bit extreme...

@Sim1 well licensed games have always been a problem in the first place but gamers and families with a budget can get plenty of value with duck Tales for 5 bucks so as to not buy a 40 or 50 dollar game especially to please their kids. You’re right not many people would probably buy a game after 6 years - but not many people pay attention to a digital store like say you and I might thereby not even knowing the game exists in the first place. If the opportunity remains and the game is not removed, then they can still make the purchase. At least Capcom warned everyone. That was decent of them. But At least i can take comfort knowing that i can play the game via backwards compatibility on my Xbox One! I think Sony also realizes the importance of this with returning to BC with the PS5! My fat PS3 is so lovely in that it can play ps one and ps2 discs!! 😊 Cheers!

The real problem here is not digital-only games and those times where everything is digital-only, the real issue is that videogame companies should adapt and demand a lifelong contract, so licensed games, based on other media, will never leave digital stores thanks to a contract expiring.

Movies don't have this problem, the deal that made the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie ended years ago, however, that movie can still be sold, when Fox lost the rights to Daredevil back to Marvel, and allowing the Netflix series to happen, they could still sell DVDs of that Ben Affleck movie.

@BlueOcean Nope. Because it's still available everywhere else it had been released. Capcom and Disney have some new-old stuff coming out later this year also, so yeah...there's that too.

@victordamazio welcome to the Entertainment Industry's world of prioritized contracts with multiple infinite revenue streams. This is in part because the Parent Companies of most media STILL view the legitimacy of the video game industry as being in its infancy. Unfortunately, compared to the longevity of the big 3, it still is. Film, TV, and even music (although music distribution has changed dramatically over the past decade) get incentivized contracts where both sides have some give and take in negotiations.

Gaming, sadly not there yet. Very 1 sided contracts, and the licensing fees are avoided in terms of paying them in any sort of longevity, in any way possible. It's not a flat fee in other forms of media, and it's not clear cut in game distribution which one is more lucrative. Most IP holders don't want to chance sales in a market they know very little about, so it becomes an expiring one sided deal for the most part. Until these parent companies actually start to respect and understand the legitimacy of game publication and development, on the level of every other form of media, it will always be that way to some extent.

At least Microsoft and Sony will still have it available. Wait a minute...
