The 2D pixel brawler Rivals of Aether was first confirmed for the Switch in January last year, but since then, there have been no further updates. The game's creator - Dan Fornace - at the time said the Nintendo version of the game was a priority and explained how he was looking for developers to help out with the port.
Now, in the latest update, Fornace has reconfirmed the Switch version of Rivals of Aether in a video message at Super Smash Con - explaining how the team is currently hard at work on the Nintendo release and is rebuilding the netcode (thanks, Nintendo Everything).
Fornace also mentioned a number of multiplayer updates coming to the game:
One of the biggest upgrades is that Rivals will be going from a two-player online game to up to four players, which means you’ll be able to queue for 1v1, 2v2, or free-for-all online. We’re also updating the friendly lobbies system, allowing you also to go up to four players, but you can go past that and have spectators. This allows you to do rotation lobbies. You can also spectate four-player matches. So these are all a ton of upgrades we’ve been working on behind-the-scenes.
Rivals of Aether is inspired by the Super Smash Bros. series. It's also similar but different from previous Switch releases such as Brawlhalla and Brawlout.

I wanted to get the game before Smash came out, but it's too late now
I have Smash ultimate and I'll still probably buy this game.
i think this has shovel knight as a dlc character. im excited
@Jojabean44 It does, he's AWESOME! Pretty gimicky but true to the character. I will def be triple dipping on this game, I love it!
@ninjapenguin1 I have only seen gameplay so this will be my first time playing it.
I had this game since early access, couldnt get into it that much myself, think I remember it also didn't have ledge grab
ended up getting tons of DLC but I never picked any of it up as never got into it much, but alot of other people seem to enjoy it a lot
@PBandSmelly Oh yeah I think I heard of that. That's awesome!
@Doktor-Mandrake No, it doesn't have a ledge grab, but you are able to wall jump after recovering and use your recovery again.
Nice! I've been looking forward to this one, as well as Roof Rage, in the realm of platform brawlers on Switch. Can't wait to get both!
Perfect timing now that nobody cares about Smash clones anymore.
Just what isn't needed.
Yeah, even if it was for adding features, it's a good call to move this far from the smash release. I'll probably pick it up because of all the great things I've heard about it
Had it on PC. It's a Smash clone but without the fluid movement. Not a very good game. Sides, Smash Ultimate is all I need but maybe someone will like this budget game.
I’ll try it out! It looks fun!
Yes, please finally bring my favourite platform fighter (alongside Smash Ultimate) for Switch! I've played this one quite a bit on PC and ready to buy this again for Switch.
I think people misunderstand this game. From what I've seen it's not just another smash clone. The game is quite unique in the realm of "smash clones" with every character having some really cool themed abilities that you just don't see in smash (such as a character that spews smoke to hide in and can make an illusionary copy of himself, or a character who creates puddles and can warp to them, or a character that has aerial instead of ground smash attacks, or a character that throws clouds and can then create lighting bolts between them). The rules in this game also differ to smash in many ways (such as there being no ledge grab). The developer Dan Fornance has done a really good job of making it have smooth competitive gameplay, as seen by the fact it has a healthy competitive community and tournaments of its own.
This is actually a really good Smash clone!!
Really the only other one I play. I have it on PC and I would say it is a 16 bit lite smash. There is not a HUGE cast of fighters like we are now accustomed to, but the ones that are in game are great!!
Also, hoping they bundle all dlc content in the Switch release, even if it has a slightly higher price tag for the game.
I will most likely be buying this day one!
I wonder why "Smash clone" is able to encapsulate every platform fighter that isn't Smash when "Street Fighter clone" means jack squat for literally any other fighting game under the sun, irrespective of how similar it is to Street Fighter. It'd be silly to call King of Fighters or Guilty Gear or DBFZ "Street Fighter clones", yet the same doesn't apply for Smash. ???
In following, this game is an absolute blast for anyone who enjoys the more competitive aspects of Smash. Very fast paced with a reduced emphasis on conventional defensive options, opting instead for high mobility and ways to space out your opponent with large hitboxes or interesting projectiles. Almost manages to eliminate things like camping completely without sacrificing enough tools needed to put up an oppressive wall. As @Pignot has noted, the game has very unique characters and as far as I'm concerned, the roster is more varied with its <20 character roster than Ultimate is with its +70. This isn't a slight on Ultimate; Rivals has simply been built from the ground up with competitive depth in mind and that is brilliantly reflected in the roster. Being good at Absa won't necessarily translate to being good at anyone else.
Really hoping this game picks up steam with the Switch platform. So much love has been put into making it one of the premiere competitive platform fighter experiences and the wonderful character designs and animations make it a blast even on a casual level. My long term wish is more devs really catch on to the potential of the genre like Dan Fornace & Co. have with this. Ultimate had the biggest showing at EVO this year and I think there's enough room for another competitive platform fighter in the fighting game cabal.
When I've told people about this game elsewhere, they tend to say, "So it's a Smash Bros. rip-off, not interested!" Frustrating. I'd love to see platform fighting blow up as a genre like the traditional fighting game did. I love it for the mechanics, not just the characters. Ultimate is amazing, but there are so many characters with basically the same move (it feels like half the roster has Counter now). Rivals is the perfect size roster for me. Everyone is unique, and they do a good job of keeping it balanced. The stage list is also great!
Nice gameplay!
I wish the graphics was a bit better
