Everyone and their Undodog seems to be launching their own Switch accessories at the moment, but this new project stands out from the rest thanks to its nifty, detachable design.
The Grip Clip is a new accessory now funding on Kickstarter. It comes in three parts - two chunky controller grips that attach to each of your Joy-Con, and a third central part which can combine the set to work just like Nintendo's own Joy-Con Grip. You can use the two controller parts in handheld mode for a larger, more comfortable grip, but its the docked mode functionality that has us particularly intrigued.
For games such as Super Mario Party or Super Mario Odyssey, playing with just a Joy-Con in one or both hands is expected. If you're a Switch owner who struggles with the Joy-Con's small size, the ability to have separate grips for each controller in each hand could well be a dream come true. We haven't tested the product ourselves, but it sure looks like a more comfortable way to hold each Joy-Con.
You can go ahead and check out the Kickstarter campaign yourself if you're interested in learning more or backing the project. The campaign is hoping to raise £36,000 and you can choose to pick up either the Grip Clip on its own for £18 (cheaper for early bird buyers), or alongside a protective carry case for £33 combined (again, cheaper if you're quick).

I remember having the WII U gamepad in my hands. It was fun at beginning, but with some games you need to be fast and ZR/R trigger were a bit difficult to use because you did need to take a bit time. I'll stick to Pro controller
Really need to buy some of these if the price is right. Standard Switch handheld play destroys my hands
@ummyeahnintendo Same. I ordered a new grip from Skull and Co, but it has been taking a while to ship, so I've been playing my undocked games in tabletop mode.
It's weird, because I have no issue holding my 3DS naked, but the Switch is very uncomfortable in handheld mode.
Actually looks decent...
@Alucard83 The WiiU Gamepad was way more ergonomic and comfortable than all Joycons I have ever tested.
I bought a yoke grip for handheld and it is a life changer. Best switch accessory I’ve used hands down.
I use Big Ben's "Go Play" grip for a year or so and it's very satisfying. I just cannot imagine how could I play on a bare switch before.
Well this article had the desired effect. Backed.
Well thought out idea. I have an Orzly grip for handheld mode that adds bumpers on the back. It makes the Switch a lot more comfortable when using the shoulder buttons.
If you are heavy handed, these types of grips give you more leverage to damage the rails and buckle. They will definitely loosen faster over time
These look fantastic.. I wants them and I wants them now!
Looks good! Hopefully it's better than the mediocre Satisfye grip.
Thanks for covering this. It looks great and I've already pledged. I play principally in handheld mode and with the grip so this would be a nice luxury - I hope Matt T gets to his funding target!
About g'damn time.. Imma get me some of these
I’m not a big accessory guy, usually just a case and that’s it. But this whole set up looks nice. Multifunctional, simple, looks week built. I like it.
Really like the look of these. If they aren’t a stupid price I might pick them up
@Ralizah I have the Skull & Co. GripCase Bundle... great buy. I got it on Amazon and they Prime, if you never get yours
I think the upside with some of the case style grips out there (I bought one but can’t remember the make) is they kind of make the Switch feel a bit more durable in handheld mode because it makes it feel like one piece and not three. Nuisance getting them on and off though. These do look nice.
Cool but all my joy cons have drifting prabloms
@Tsurii Me and my wife have exactly the same hand size... I don't have any issues with handheld or joycons in holder. Bless my wee mitts.
No thanks. It looks like it'll make it clunky and uncomfortable.
I know it's a prototype right now, but it just doesn't look quite big enough or "grippy" enough. Maybe the guy's hands in the photo are just kinda large? 💁✋
l bet its nice to use when your using the joy-con alone, but using it for handheld mode and controller, l will say no for that.
I am sold!!
That's a buy!!
Nice idea. Surprising this isn't out already.
Meh, not for me. I have zero issue holding the Switch without a grip and I really don't think I would want it to be any wider. In docked mode I just use the excellent pro-controller.
What I am looking at is the trigger grip and how that holds up.
i just need the one similar to the hori daemon x machina grip controller but with full joycon functionality
Grips are some of the best accessories for the Switch.
Yea not a fan of anything thatll make the switch wider believe it or not the joycons arent the issue its how wide the damn switch actually is, its about 2x the size of the DS, i never had issues with any of nintendos consoles till this one i actually cant stand handheld mode if its not tabletop or docked i just flat out dont use it.
Also any grips you get wear down your slides faster, wondering why your brackets are bending or why it doesnt lock in place how it used to? Well if you use a grip and have a bit of a heavy grip issue yourself youll actually damage the system faster, its been known since launch thanks to several youtube videos that the screws in the bracket are stronger than the bracket as in the bracket will break off from the screw before the screw even budges or gets damaged
This is a cool concept
All grips that I've seen, including cases with grips, pale in comparison to Hori's Split Pad Pro. The latter fixes not just the lack of grips but the layout of the sticks/buttons, the lack of a true D-Pad, and potentially the drifting issue.
Looks very nice, the joycon are not the most comfortable things to use. I may pick this up if the price is right!
This makes the already large switch even bigger though. I think Nintendo should release a smaller, lighter switch that is handheld only. They could call it the Lite switch or switch Lite.
