After what feels like an incredibly long wait, Netflix has finally released the first trailer for its live-action version of The Witcher, starring Superman's Henry Cavill as the White Wolf.
In this first look, we find out a bit about the lore within the universe of the Witcher, see some of the well-known characters from the series and witness an eight-legged monster surface from the depths of a swamp.
As previously explained, this series is based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski's popular line of fantasy novels, rather than the video games - this includes The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which is coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year. The Netflix series is "coming soon" and will be comprised of eight one-hour long episodes.
To help promote the show, Netflix has opened up dedicated social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Take a look at the teaser trailer above and tell us what you think down below.

ROUND 2: FIGHT!
YESSSS GET IN. All the people negatively judging it cause it’s not based on the game will scurry away now. That’s how you do a trailer!
This looks amazing.... jaw on floor still. Someone call a doctor.... or a forklift
Pleasantly surprised
Well im impressed
I'm slowly making peace with their casting choices
I hope Digital Floundering run a tech comparison. I'm interested in what Netflix have had to sacrifice compared to the PS4 version.
"Netflix have done a remarkable job bringing Witcher to HD streaming services. Although faithful to the source material, our analysing machine has noted some sacrifices to keep the experience running smooth. Character, charisma and colour are all noted as absent. The experience is episodic and we did notice some considerable delay between episodes initially."
If it’s half as good as the game it will be an awesome show
@GrailUK you sir, are a tonic. Take my upvote and begone.
I know next to nothing about The Witcher, but this looks pretty cool.
@GrailUK forget charisma, what's with all the slow-mo? I'm not watching it until they patch the framerate!
THE WORST MONSTERS sniggers
@nhSnork (Love it!) That is a very good point. Digital Floundering would have mentioned that (they are experts after all) but they were too busy speculating what chip set a new revision of Netflix could theoretically run. You can check the video entitled "Would talk of a more powerful Netflix persuade you to watch this video?" on YouTube and don't forget to subscribe.
Let’s see if we as a community can top the idiocy of the other Witcher comment section 😂
We just have to wait for our main dude to show up lol
On topic: the production values are clearly very high, but for now it looks too generic and a GOT wannabe. Let’s wait and see if it can forge its own identity while keeping high quality storytelling.
@GrailUK I’ve heard a rumor that they had to cut (shave?) Geralt’s beard for this port (much to people’s chagrin) because of Netflix’s evident lack of power and inability to process realistic hair/fur. Can DF confirm or dismiss any of that? 🤔
Doesn't look anywhere near as good as CATS
@clvr Oh now that is incredibly interesting. A typical beard can hit as many as 4 terastrands of hair follicles on most devices. What me and my partner* have been appreciating over dinner most days this week is how Netflix have chosen to drop this down to approximately 3.987 terastrands in favour of increasing the number of shades of grey. Game of Thrones hit 698 shades at it's peak and Netflix are certainly not wanting to be outdone by this.
*Currently going through a divorce and conversation is mostly one sided.
@GrailUK sounds like they made the right call then, I love me some hundreds shades of grey 😂
(Dude the whole conversation was awesome ahahahah)
nope, I played all the games but nothing of this says witcher to me. If however, someone would say " a PC not historically accurate description of western/northern Europe lore mixed with PC nonsense and a guy that looks like Gerald" then id say, ye he kinda looks like him.
Guess Q2 growth wasn't happening because they hit the proverbial brick wall. I know more people canceling netflix than subscribing to it.
@clvr Just to be clear though, DF is an abbreviation for Digital Foundry which I believe is a parody of Digital Floundering. From all accounts I hear they are rather clever, but don't offer the same level of insight.
Henry Cavill confirmed for smash is all I got out of it
Never played the games but this looks great
Do you guys talk about Marvel movies or Marvel television since Nintendo has an exclusive Marvel game? No. Then why write articles about this show?
It looks great. Literally got Goosebumps while watching it. The first two books, The last wish and the sword of destiny seem to be clearly depicted in the trailer. If you have only played the games, maybe you will remember more stuff from the games story in season 2, but as it seems, it will be phenomenal.
@Belatarr exactly pal, I think of him all day and all night, it’s become an obsession by now.
Because you know, I had to put a lot of effort in following his epics, since writing a dozen comments and derailing a section by arguing with everyone and throwing tantrums is exactly what I’d call discreet and hard to notice. Thank god for my incredible attention, and thank you for all the edge you brought!
P.S.: if me acknowledging him equals idiocy, what does it say about you that you’re acknowledging me acknowledging him?
Pot calling the kettle black much?
My first thought is someone beat Geralt with an ugly stick
@HaNks I'm glad you remembered the "s" in your last word.
Kinda just looks like a porn version of Legolas, or like if Fabio posed for the cover of a smutty Legolas fanfic.
Cavil is definitely a solid casting for this. Still disagreement with Yennefer, so there's that.
Wow it looks exactly like every trailer for everything out there already, with the same sound effects, muzak, buildup and incomprehensible whispering they call acting.
Exciting!
Wow nice!
Def a must watch! Isnt that the guy from superman?
@Baaart Id like to let u know that i snickered and my wife thought i was watching porn. Trust me, when i say ur comment was a good one ^^
Reactions I've seen ranged from "meh" to "ugh". But then I am Polish and so are most of my friends.
As long as this doesn't become Americanized as we all know for Japanese animation to American movies where a totally flopped.

"So that's all that life means to you, monsters and money?"
"It's all that needs to be."
I feel like that was a conversation between me and Netflix.
