If you're hoping for more real-time strategy excellence from Bad North, you're absolutely in luck as it seems the mighty-sounding Jotuun Edition will be arriving on Switch very soon indeed.
In an updated blog post, the team behind the game has revealed that the brand new content expansion will arrive on PC on 24th July, with console versions landing on "the same day, or very soon after". A very decent amount of new stuff has been crafted for the update, and it'll all be available for free. Here's what you'll get:
Campaign Changes
We've reworked the campaign progression to show the enemy types on levels, advance the Viking Frontier faster and replaced individual gold with a shared gold pool. This is all comes together to allow you to make much more informed strategic decisions between levels and makes tackling multiple islands per turn a more viable approach.New Upgrades & Meta Progression
There’s 4 more Items to find and we’re also introducing Commander Traits - smaller, passive buffs for your Commanders - so more than ever you will need to work with what you have and each run will be more unique. Over time you can unlock all these Items and Traits as Starting Upgrades, which you can select for your initial 2 commanders when starting a new game.Difficulty Enhancements
There are some new options for more casual play, such as Checkpoint Islands which give you a reset point, acting as a safety net for when your campaign reaches a tragic conclusion. You can also opt out of the "Iron Man" behaviour of the game by enabling Replayable Levels on a new campaign (no more save scrubbing needed!). And if more casual is not what you're looking for, we've also added an unlockable Very Hard difficulty for those who want the challenge.
And lots more, too...
Features / Changes Summary:
- 4 new items
- Hero Traits
- See the enemy types you will face before playing a level
- Shared gold
- Checkpoints
- Replayable Levels
- Very Hard difficulty
- Choose the look and loadout of your starting commanders

Next time I see this on sale it's an instabuy now.
Oh I loved the atmosphere in the demo. Need to buy and play this at some point.
Great we are getting a big update. It's my second most played Switch game after Zelda. Still not beat hard mode.
@Grandiajet Damn you really love this game 😅
It's a fun little game
i get pretty far in this and then got teriified to play it in case i lost one of my leaders
Sounds like a bunch of good changes/enhancements. I bought the game right after the Direct stealth drop and enjoyed it quite a bit. The difficulty pacing was extremely weird though and kinda annoying at repeat plays, which ... are very well within the game's rogue-lite nature.
Excellent news. I thought the first half of the game was thoroughly enjoyable, but as the difficulty increases during the late game the design flaws become incredibly irritating. These changes seem to address most of my personal criticisms and I'm really looking forward to playing through it again.
Friggin sweet. I found the game a little too punishing for my tastes, but these quality of life improvements will make me try again! After I finish Grim Fandango, (which I adore) that is!
This is great news! I love this game and can't wait for a two player version. Bad North 2 is hopefully coming with local and online multiplayer, both competitive and co-op! Seeing as that's a while away (if it's even in the works) this will be a fun addition/improvement for the game. Can't wait to play through Bad North on multiple difficulty levels after this new patch drops!! Oh, and I hope that Bad North 2 keeps the awesome 60fps graphics on Switch. This game looks so good in both docked and handheld gameplay!
Very cool. This is one of my favorite Switch titles but after playing through it a dozen or so times it had definitely grown stale. I'm excited for the new content.
Nice! I am keeping an eye on this...
@Grandiajet It is very hard game even on Normal (I think). I played on Hard and would get wiped out before I reach the end. These updates will certainly help soften some of the more frustrating parts of otherwise great game design.
I have to get back into this - tried picking it up after a few months absence, and couldn't remember how to play! I'll give it another go when the update drops...
@cusman They do need to fix the difficulty spikes. Usually there is nothing you can do to stop being distroyed.
These changes sound like they have taken feedback and found solutions. Can't wait to try it.
@YorkHund It's just one of those games that really hooked me. Got my monies worth 😉
