Today's Pokémon Direct gave us our first look at some brand new monsters set to appear in Pokémon Sword and Shield, as well as the two Legendaries which will grace the box art for each game. Let's take a proper look, shall we?
Kicking things off with those Legendaries, we have Zacian and Zamazenta. As you can see, these huge, wolf-like beings represent both a sword and shield - unsurprising given the titles of the games. The Direct hinted that these two characters will have key roles in the games' plot.
On top of that, we also saw a handful of new critters that you'll able to catch on your journey. We've got the full rundown of each one for you below (with images just below the descriptions).
Gossifleur
Category: Flowering Pokémon
Type: Grass
Height: 1′4″
Weight: 4.9 lbs.
Ability: Cotton Down / Regenerator
Gossifleur prefers land with clear water and air. Its pollen has a healing effect and is commonly used as a folk medicine remedy and made into a tea given to children in the Galar region when they are ill. Gossifleur travels over long distances by getting blown along by the wind. It controls the direction of its travels by twisting its body and petals.Wooloo
Category: Sheep Pokémon
Type: Normal
Height: 2′
Weight: 13.2 lbs.
Ability: Fluffy / Run Away
The white fur that covers Wooloo’s body grows throughout its life and will fully grow back in three months even if it has been completely shorn. The fur is used for clothing, carpets, and other goods and is very popular as a specialty product of the Galar region. Wooloo live as a herd and mimic the actions of their Trainer or herd leader. They dislike conflict, and if they need to escape from enemies, they will simply roll away.
Corviknight
Category: Raven Pokémon
Type: Flying/Steel
Height: 7′3″
Weight: 165.3 lbs.
Ability: Pressure / Unnerve
It is said that Corviknight is the strongest Pokémon living in the skies of the Galar region. It can often be seen fearlessly soaring through the air. Many say that any Pokémon foolish enough to challenge Corviknight are sent running with just a sharp glare and cry from this fearsome Pokémon. Because Corviknight possess superb flying skills and high intelligence, many of them work for the company called Galar Taxi and help transport people from town to town.
Drednaw
Category: Bite Pokémon
Type: Water/Rock
Height: 3′3″
Weight: 254.6 lbs.
Ability: Strong Jaw / Shell Armor
The jagged fangs of the Bite Pokémon Drednaw are strong and sharp enough to bite through rock and iron. Though it has a heavy shell, its well-developed muscles allow it to move quickly. Drednaw is known to be extremely aggressive, so it takes a skilled Trainer to tame and handle this Pokémon. It seems that some Trainers will release Drednaw back into the wild once they discover they can’t handle it.We've got the adorable Sheep Pokémon Wooloo, the Bite Pokémon Drednaw, the Raven Pokémon Corviknight, and the Flowering Pokémon Gossifleur.
Gossifleur's evolution was also shown off - the Cotton Bloom Pokémon, Eldegoss.
Eldegoss
Category: Cotton Bloom Pokémon
Type: Grass
Height: 1′8″
Weight: 5.5 lbs.
Ability: Cotton Down / RegeneratorWhen Gossifleur evolves into Eldegoss, its head becomes covered in thick cotton fluff. This cotton fluff serves as a cushion that helps to protect Eldegoss’s head from damage. The tiny seeds attached to the cotton fluff are said to be highly nutritious and beneficial to both people and Pokémon. Eldegoss spreads these seeds throughout the region, making the soil of the Galar region rich in nutrients.
A nice mixture of cool, cute, and powerful? Are you excited to see even more new Pokémon? Let us know what you think of these new designs in the comments below.

I loved it all! Dynamax is neat.
The shield dog looked kinda bad but the other one is legit carrying a sword. I'm okay with this.
It's interesting that they went for a turn limit for dynamaxing. That sounds fair.
I've seen tweets on people bashing it and wanting more mega evos but, let's be fair, mega evos takes a lot of work and dynamax is just faster and gets things done quicker while still kinda giving you the sense of "My Pokémon just got BUFF!!!!"
The legendaries are a little bland but not horrible I guess.
Way to justify the title of the games.
Solgaleo 2 and Cobalion 2!
I'm not thrilled with the legendaries (one literally has a sword in its mouth... drag), but I really like all of the other new Pokémon.
I prefer the design of the other Pokémon in the direct than the legendaries. Damn!
I think sword is going to be the more popular so I think i'll go shield. However might see announcements about the rest of the version exclusives first.
I wish there was a more realistic look to it all.
Not very sold on the Legendaries. They look cool, but they also look too similar to each other outside of the obvious sword and shield dynamic.
The normal pokemon look great however. Corviknight and Drednaw look like a ton of fun, and Wooloo and Gossifleur/Eldegoss are adorable.
They look pretty cool. Corviknight and Wooloo are my favorites.
I'm loving the pigtails on Wooloo.
The legendaries feel like they should be in Okami and I'm okay with this.
So a dog with a cone and a dog with a stick? Got it.
Pokemon carrying a sword in it's mouth? Nope, they have ran out of ideas. What happens if he drops the sword? Can we get Jiggly Puff holding the sword?
Pokemon slim doggy and big doggy
The legendaries look like budget Power Rangers toys.
@Bunkerneath they probably pick it up again. What happens when farfetched loses its leek, or Dewott drops scalchops, Delphox loses stick?
Gen 1 had lazy stuff too. Voltorb is literally a pokeball with eyes, electrode is just a bigger one.
Ditto is just a pink blob, gastly is super basic, etc.
They aren't running out of ideas, you just don't like the designs, which is fine.
I would die for WooLoo, I’m gonna have a whole flock of them!
@marck13 Me too. I honestly just want something in the awesome Black and White style
Yeah, this is all sort of moving the opposite direction of what impressed me so much about Sun & Moon, so I'm not really sure how to feel about it.
So is that sword a bone? Or are pokemon raiding weaponsmiths now?
Maybe the sword came from a stone? Or a lake?
Gosh...!
At first i thought it was Solgaleo until i saw a different color of its body, it was two Legendaries from Galar region. 😅
Prefer sword over shield but both are a disappointment really. Still Excited for the game though.
I really like Corviknight, wooloo and the turtle thing. I think the turtle thing is my favourite. I just like him.
The sword legendary is alright not so much a fan of the shield one. I dunno. I thought they were uninspired.
A couple things i didnt like about the presentation was the lack of enthusiasm on display when revealing new pokemon and no information beyond what their dex status will probably read like. I think the art director could have been more upbeat and his script could have been more informative to build hype, like mention their typings and their battle styles.
Also the box art looks really bad. I'm assuming it's a mock up but even still I personally think it looks very amateurish. (I am very pedantic about smaller details I know).
Anyways to end on a positive note I'm super excited. Especially to explore the wild area. I just love seeing pokemon in the over world.
I think I battled a Dynamaxed Corviknight in a Dark Souls once...
I actually love all of the new Pokemon! God it's so nice seeing the Pokemon walk around in the world, inside buildings and along streets. Lovely.
I'm so happy that you can at least turn the camera in the Wild Area. The way the camera panned up inside the city shots makes me hope against hope that you can also turn the camera inside cities, if only certain ones.
Wild ZACIAN fainted! You gained 4,286 SOULS! lol
@Wildvine53 I now want a pokemon farming sim just for that flock of Wooloo. Surely there are farmers living simple lives in the pokemon world?!
Will Zacian have a heartbreaking backstory about how he followed his master into the Abyss, got trapped there while is master was consumed, was saved by a nameless hero from the future and then later, in the future, had to fight his saviour to the death?
'cuz if he doesn't, I'mma be real pissed.
I don’t like either legendary but the other designs are neat. Wooloo is my favourite, I predict it’ll add the Steel type to be like wire wool.
Corviknight looks really cool!
I do agree with some that the legendaries aren't all that exciting. Though I'll wait to hear their story. Sometimes, a great story or cool Pokedex entry can really make a difference
I'm okay with this, just confused why Zacian couldn't have his tail(multiple tails?) end be a sword, rather than be a Zoro from One Piece copy.
Damn, that Corviknight is dope.
Why couldn't they make Zacian wield a Honedge xD
But nope he has just raided the local armoury.
Am I the only one who loves all the new Pokemon including the legendaries? :S
@Bunkerneath
"What happens if he drops the sword? Can we get Jiggly Puff holding the sword?"
There you go! 😆
15 minutes Quick drawing after read your comment. 😁
It's been a long time since I stopped following Pokemon and I am rather interested in this entry.
Some of the new pokemons look awesome unlike many in the past that looked like they were designed by toddlers.
Ohh I can't wait for this!
Zacian is holding a sword and Zamazenta IS a shield. Huh. To be honest, I don’t like either. They should have either both been wielding the weapons or both had the weapons be part of them. Still, eh, not a dealbreaker. I have a feeling Zacian will be more popular so I’ll go Shield Wolf.
As for the others? I mean their designs are cool though something about them makes them look way different than older designs... but maybe that’s because these were born in HD while others had to make their way into HD (many starting in 2D). The graphics are still growing on me.
I was hoping that grass was grass/fairy, but did it say people make tea out of it? Dang Valar, you hardcore.
Wish they would have given us the first evos for the starters. The legendaries are just ok. The other Pokémon look more interesting, especially the turtle
People be complaining about Zacian holding a sword.
Hypno is holding a pendulum.
Cubone is holding a bone.
Marowak is holding a bone.
Farfetch'd is holding some sort of stick/onion.
Timburr is holding a plank of wood.
Gurdurr is holding an iron bar.
Conkeldurr is holding two concrete cylinders.
Braixen has a stick in it's tail.
Flabébé is holding a flower.
Floette is holding a flower.
Honedge is holding a sheath.
Doublade is holding two sheaths.
Aegislash (Blade forme) is holding a shield.
Kadabra is holding a spoon.
Alakazam is holding two spoons.
Mega Sableye is holding it's giant gem.
Yamask's mask
The following list of Pokemon are holding items on their Pokedex page art.
Delphox is holding a stick.
Hoopa is holding a ring.
Delibird is holding a sack of food or something.
The following list of Pokemon are not exactly holing items, but still have them on their body.
Chansey's egg in its pouch
Braixen's stick in its tail.
Meowth's charm on its head.
Mega Alakazam's spoons that it is levitating.
Togepi has half of an egg shell on its stomach.
Slowking's crown on its head.
Blissey's egg in its pouch.
Oshawott's shell.
Dewott's shells.
Samurott's swords and armor.
Zoroark has some sort of bead or hair tie on its "mane."
Klefki's keys.
Kangaskhan's baby.
Hitmonchan's boxing gloves.
I enjoyed the direct and the game is looking great aesthetically. I was meh about Pokemon in the overworld before but it actually looks great in SwSh. I hope there is a focus on exploring the wild areas.
@EasyDaRon
Wolf wearing sword?
I think i have ever saw like that before...
@rjejr Not to mention all of the accessories on the fighting Pokémon. Or the flesh Gi's.
Zamazenta better have the most insane defense to make up for that design. And will make an interesting fighter for it.
This are the most disappointing and uninspired legendaries ever I mean how many lion, tiger and wolf looking Pokémon we need and on top of that they look way too similar to each other
Dynamax is incredibly disappointing, just another Mega evolution kind of bull that IMO should not be in a Pokémon game, legendaries look stupid especially Zacian. The rest looked pretty nice.
Either way I'm not really that hyped yet. I'm gonna get the games but so far it's looking like it might be as disappointing to me as X/Y and Sun/Moon (and the Ultras) were. Coming from someone who loved all games from Gens 1 to 5 a ton. As well as all their remakes (including ORAS; less so for the Let's Go games but they were still fun at least).
Maybe I'm just getting old.
@GKO900
Maybe there is a story behind the similar looking of Zacian and Zamazenta.
Possibly they are siblings or created from same species or maybe something we still don't know yet.
I'm so naming Zacian, "Sif" when I catch him... no real reason why just think the name suits him.
from garbage bag to a pokemon with a sword...Ugh, ah well as long as gen 1 to 4 are in here im good.
@rjejr Farfetch'd is holding a green onion leek
@EasyDaRon Google Dark souls Sif the great grey wolf.
Corviknight is beautiful. I want all the merchandise they make of it. I need more emo bird in my life.
@Wexter That was my first thought as well. Grey Lord Sif - I can smell that Dark Souls/Pokémon crossover in the offing. Sweet lord, that would be amazing!
@Shadowmoon522 @KingBowser86 @EasyDaRon
I'm assuming the Sword is made out of some type of Stark nanotech. Maybe Zacian is Galar(ian) for Stark? Could be the same for the shield apparently.
I love the Super Sentai inspired designs of the legendaries.
I'd really like if you didn't put the new Pokemon in the thumbnails (or w/e you call them)
I did end up watching the direct so on personal level I have no problem with it this time but I know I'm going to avoid everything Pokemon related post-E3 so I'd very much appreciate if you didn't put the new Pokemon in the article thumbnails for those who want to avoid spoiling the new Pokemon designs for themselves.
Super stoked for Sword and Shield overall, but feel the "Dynamax" feature is just lazy Mega Evolution. At least megas had a new design, these are the same mons as always, just bigger. I think I'll make a point to avoid using this feature and make the game more challenging.
@Expa0 I hear you but you would do better just to start off the internet until November if you don't want to see any advertisements. This stuff is going to be everywhere.
@marck13 So you want them to do sort of a Detective Pikachu look?
I like most of the new designs. I think Corviknight is my favorite from this batch.
The legendaries though....Hmm....I love wolves and was leaning towards Sword, but I like Zamazenta's design better. 🤔 Looks like I'll need to know more about any version exclusives before I make my decision this fall.
Good stuff. I'm digging all the new Pokes so far. I just really hope we finally get a Poison/Electric dual type this generation. Can't wait for further Pokemon reveals.
Can we get a Story of Seasons Pokemon match up?
I'm okay with some of these, but the others feel like they take a few too many design elements of their predecessors. The legendaries just feel like they took one wolf Pokemon design and converted it into two Pokemon. While they've done stuff like that before (Lat@s), I just wish they had differentiated the designs for what is supposed to be the cover art legendaries a bit more. Gossifleur looks way too much like a middle-stage evolution of Lilligant, while it's evo Eldegoss sadly looks nothing like it and instead has designs resembling Roselia. It's a better looking cotton Pokemon than Whimsicott at least. I do like Corviknight. The concept mimics Skarmory, yes, but the execution does not, so that's good.
I really enjoyed Pokemon up through Gen 7, and I really want a reason to come back and play it again, but I'm worried a lot of the same issues I had before with the game will still persist.
...also, Dolphin Pokemon pls. I'm sad it hasn't happened by now.
If the region is loosely based on the UK, they could have gone with lion and unicorn.
The two Legendaries are like wolves with armor.
So we know we have Water Bowser, which will go great with Tree Bowser (I mean Torterra) so when is Fire Bowser going to become a Pokemon?
Please answer us that, Mr. Doug.
Wooloo has already conquered the internet.
Lets just say that the new pokemon are not great looking, they're lame once again imo but the sheep puff ball thing looks funny.
I think i'll choose pokemon shield instead and not sword now, because zacian looks lamer everytime l see him. Sorry dude
@KingMike
l like that "fire bowser" xD
@Sheekago
I only watched the trailers and yes. More like a Skyrim-ish nature and lose a bit the cartoon look. I believe it would attract a so far untapped audience.
@SmaggTheSmug wait until you see the mighty Scottish cattle 🤣
@Bunkerneath Everything Gamefreak does has a meaning. Pokemon have inspired people throughout the years with their appearance and tools. Furthermore, these legendaries might have given the idea to humans to create our own sword and shield just like them.
Moreover, Ditto is a failed mew.
Voltrobe is camouflaging itself just like the scattered items in the pokemon games that look like pokeballs.

Those are some interesting ideas! I don't agree with... any of them but they are interesting.
I do agree though that gamefreak does have meaning behind the stuff they do.
