Just last week, we received confirmation that Wonder Boy Returns Remix was headed to the Nintendo eShop in Japan. Now, we have full details for the game's western release thanks to eShop listings in North America and Europe, too.
The game will launch on the very same day across both regions, joining the Japanese release on 23rd May. In North America, you'll be able to download a copy for $14.99; European pricing is set at 9,99€ / £8.99.
Here's a quick description of the game from those very listings:
"Wonder Boy" was an arcade hit back in 1986, with its intuitive controls and polished game balance.
This forever famous sidescrolling action game has been remixed and reborn for the Nintendo Switch!
Join the adventure of a boy who's doing his best to save his girlfriend Tina -- updated with high-def anime-inspired visuals!
A new feature called the "Charge Shot" has been added to this latest incarnation, allowing you to destroy enemies with a gigantic stone axe!
We hope you'll enjoy "Wonder Boy Returns Remix," which has been not just faithfully reproduced, but in fact rearranged and greatly improved by Ryuichi Nishizawa.
Are you looking forward to this one? Make sure to check out the announcement trailer above to see the remixed action for yourself.

Remember playing this on my C64, doubt I will play it again
Is that same Adventures Island on NES / PS2 / Gamecube ?
Yes please.... nice collectors physical would be dandy. I’d imagine SRG or LRG will already be discussing it...
First I'll wait for reviews, because people say it had poor controls in its original release. And then I'll decide, but it will certainly have a physical version at some point, by one of the LRG-like companies, at a very high price though.
It's funny how Ryûichi Nishizawa himself is involved with all these WB-related releases. I hope it's for the best.
Fun game I never got to finish. Played in on the MASTER systems. That systems was a master of its time for games.
@Moroboshi876 @Stocksy
The PS4 release of Wonder Boy Returns already had a limited physical print from Strictly Limited Games.

They might do a Switch physical print for Wonder Boy Returns Remix.
It doesn't look like a particularly good game though.
With Wonder Boy 3 remake and Monster Boy both offering incredible Metroidvania experiences, a remake of the original (very basic platformer) seems an underwhelming prospect. Had it on Master System ... was mildly fun but greatly overshadowed by WB in MonsterLand and WB Dragons Trap. Still, reasonable price point AND YOU GET TO GO ON A SKATEBOARD!!!!! .... A SKATEBOARD AH SEZ!!!
they really mutated this remake imo
I know it was Wonder Boy first, but I can't accept this blondie over the baseball-cap wearing guy from Adventure Island.
@Anti-Matter Adventure island is an adaptation or copy of Wonderboy, so yes.
I put a few hours into the PC version and this version looks even more refined and improved!
Will holdout for a potential physical version
I'll wait for reviews. I wanna have it but 15 bucks is too much IMO. Let's see if gameplay is tight
Great for the people who are happy for the release although I've never been a fan of the Adventure Island series.
I noticed this on PS4 some time ago and skipped on it. I may wait for a review and get it on Switch... maybe.
@Anti-Matter Nah Adventure Island is quite different
My favourite WB game is either Monster World on the Mega Drive, or Dragon's Trap.
Wonder what a 3D game in the series would be like, i always pictured it as being very similar to Zelda.
I was playing the original on my Amstrad CPC 6128
This should get me excited, but I heard bad things about its previous release. Had the original on the Master System, but it was never a highlight of the series to be honest. I'd much rather a remaster/remake of Wonder Boy in Monster Land.
@fluggy Check out Aggelos, you will not be disappointed.
@Jokerwolf
Finished Aggelos twice. On PC couple years ago and replayed it on Switch this week. Great game.
@fluggy Awesome, I really liked it. I wish there was more stuff after the end but it is still great.
Honestly I feel like they're remixing the wrong side of the Wonder Boy franchise. Most people I know are fans of the Monster World (III and IV) games, so remixing the original seems... odd. Really cool for the original Wonder Boy fans though. Feels like most of the remakes and sequels this franchise has gotten are from the Monster World/Dragon's Trap side of things so I imagine fans of the original game are pretty stoked.
As for me.... I'll pass. I played Monster World first and that's pretty much where my main interest lies. The Adventure Island style of gameplay never did it for me too much.
@BensonUii
Same gane. Hudson ported most of the series under different titles.
The weirdness is in the fact that Hudson’s Adventure Island took off as it’s own franchise. Similar to how the Italian Zombi films started off as a localization of Dawn of the Dead.
Like most westerners, I was familiar with the Hudson version, and I hated the game, regardless. 😂
@BensonUii
Yeah, and I was the one kid that had TurboGrafx, and a friend of mine was the one kid that had Sega Master System; so we were hella confused.
Oh, it gets better.... there were two completely different games originally released as Wonderboy III: One for Master System (subtitled "The Dragon's Trap") and the other for arcade (subtitled "Monsters Lair"). They both came to PCENGINE/TURBO as Dragons Curse and, thankfully close, Monsters Lair (no Wonderboy/Monster World designations).
Alas, nothing tops the fifth game in the series. It counts one of the Wonderboy III's as a IV and we get "Wonderboy V: Monster World III".
Cause, like, only 3 of the 5 Wonderboy games are Monster World games. Three years later, Monster World IV (no Wonder Boy) came out.
And now, if you've been following along... Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap was recently remastered by Lizard Cube and released on PS4/SWITCH/XBOX/WIN as Wonderboy: Dragon's Trap. The following year, we got a reimagining of Wonderboy III: Dragon's Trap called Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom.
Got all that? :0
@BensonUii
NO, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is definitely a different (and much larger) game. So, re-imagining was a bad choice of words. Spiritual sequel/successor would have been more appropriate. If you like Dragon's Trap, you'll like Monster Boy even more (although, subjectively I prefer the art and music of the former).
I forgot the best part of the Wonderboy confusion! So, remember how the first Wonderboy ended up as the Adventure Island series?
When Dragons Trap came to Turbo, it was called Dragon's Curse... but... in Japan, on the PC-Engine, it was sold as... "Adventure Island".
And mind you, with no relation to their other Adventure Island series.
