Nintendo has shared a list of the top 15 best-selling eShop games of April 2019 in Europe, showing off the sheer diversity offered by the system's lineup as a result.
The list features first party Nintendo greats, indie favourites, third party heavy hitters, and pretty much everything in between. Who'd have thought Mario, Skyrim, and Final Fantasy VII would ever be sitting next to each other on a Nintendo system ranking?
The list below is based on the number of Nintendo eShop downloads in European territories during the whole month:
- Cuphead
- Super Mario Odyssey
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Enter the Gungeon
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Final Fantasy VII
- Rocket League
- Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition
- Minecraft
- FIFA 19
- Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
- Overcooked 2
- Stardew Valley
- Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
- Octopath Traveler
Did you download any of these games from the eShop last month? Do any of the games featured surprise you? Tell us below.

great to see ff7 is a big success! still playing it now! so much to do even at 40 hours in!
Cuphead is still number one since release, think it could potentially be the best seller 2019 eShop game.
funny how diablo and ace attorney were at the top of the chart for most of the month yet they arent here.
Good that Cuphead is selling well, that means Microsoft should be putting more of their exclusives on the console (I know Super Lucky's Tale is coming, but how about Viva Piñata, Disneyland Adventures and more coming over). Sucks for people like myself though who own an xbox one, and see those games not being an exclusive for it anymore though.
Cuphead is over-hyped. It was a mediocre game.
Still waiting for that Cuphead physical release.
@JLPick why does it suck? Besides others being able to play those games, you'll also have the chance to enjoy them in a new way if you want to.
@megallade perhaps only in your country?
@JLPick no sucking at all. Every good game should be available to a big public. More platforms == more players
Nice to see Cuphead doing so well, but disappointed not to see Katana Zero anywhere on that list. I know it's already selling well in other markets, but I wish it all the success it can get in every region. It's a marvelous game.
Not surprising to see Cuphead at the top as it's a fantastic game
@Taei How is it a mediocre game? The game runs smooth and the challenge and animations are top notch.
@Taei Maybe to you and others, but a lot of folks love it. Definitely not for me, it was alright imo. But thats just my opinion. It obviously has an amazing amount of love and work poured into every aspect of it, so to dismiss it as mediocre is a disservice to everyone who worked so hard on it.
Yey FF VII! 26 hours in, got a few chocobos, three people on Limit 4 (including Aeris until the thing happened), just about to go to the underwater reactor after learning Cloud's real backstory. LOVE IT!!
My 2 eShop games this month were Dynamite World Fishing for 9 cents and No Reload Heroes for 99 cents. Both worth the money.
Also bought "A Hat in Time" on Steam for $15 b/c it got the Yooka-Laylee on Wii U Kickstarter treatment on Switch.
@Bunkerneath (including Aeris until the thing happened)
The spoiler of that moment 20 years ago is the reason I still won't use guides today. I read about it like a day before I played it. Still the most poignant moment in my very long gaming life but I can only imagine what it would have been like had I not red about it beforehand. Probably would have broke down crying and lost my mind. Still sad.
@rjejr I know, I know, but just in case....also kinda funny that Squenix prevents recording that event (video or photos)
Europeans didn't buy Katana Zero?
Katana zero 😍😍😍😍, cuphead hardcore game 😍😍😍😍😍
Too bad to see Hellblade and Mortal Kombat didn't make it... Oh well.
@JLPick
I don’t see how that sucks at all. You can still play them, now more other people can.
I found Cuphead terrifyingly boring and average in every way but not every game is for everyone.
@bluemage1989 You could just say the bosses were too hard, lol. No need to ridicule the whole game over a bit of rage quit.
Katana Zero has only been out for a little over a week. Be patient.
I hope the success of Cuphead means we will see Ori and the Blind Forest on Switch soon.
This list is pretty diverse, which is good to see. For once it's not overcrowded with first-party titles from top to bottom.
@Notshane sorry didn't see the memo regarding Cuphead being exempt from criticism. Its not an easy game but its no harder than Sekiro which I am playing at the moment and loving. The reasons I don't like it is that the game offers little besides boss battles which arent particuarly exciting anyway and that I hate the art style.
@JLPick Disneyland Adventures and Pixar Rush? Yes please
I picked up Skyrim, thinking "I'll just nibble here and there"...and OMG it's consumed me all over again.
@EasyDaRon I would love that. Awesome games on better hardware. Why not? And with achievements and normal voice-chat.
Yes please!
A good top 15 but I am surprised that Mario Kart Switch is not on the list.
@Carlos
@Marka23
Guys I made a mistake, Ok.
@Pj1 so you think that a game that isn't even on the Switch should be one of it's best selling games?
@Tandoori I'm hoping for Ori and the Blind Forest too.
I was surprised to see Odyssey and Breath of the Wild so high on the list but they have been on sale.
Glad to see Cuphead doing so well. I’ve wanted it for years and it’s even better than I had hoped. The art, animation and music are all outstanding, and most of the boss battles are clever, tricky but fair. Just over 80% through, there’s been a few exasperating moments but I’ve kept coming back for more without hesitation. Just really not looking forward to the two big boss battles at the end... 😫
FFVII landed too late for me: got it on the iPad and can’t really justify the triple-dip purchase that would be Switch.
Been making my way through FFX instead.
Was on the fence about Cuphead and have decided not to get it. Dragon’s Dogma, however, has me continually hovering over that purchase button!
I got dled Cuphead and got Dragon's Dogma physically. Both great games. I'm having a good time with both of them right now.
Not surprised Cuphead is doing well, it's one of my favorite games and deserves the top spot for sure. Anyone saying otherwise is just hating. I haven't seen a single legit criticism for it above, so yeah.
My only personal gripe with the game is that King Dice is a bit unfair at the end due to the fact you have to bounce off the pink cards he sends out, but he doesn't send them out fast enough and I find myself getting hit because the pink card isn't coming out before I start descending.
Other than that, pretty much flawless.
@idtgatt don't worry, they weren't the hardest bosses in the game and its pretty easy to control the dice rolls to your advantage
@Onion he alternates which hand he uses most of the time, so you can just stand behind his hand and attack him, also I always have the dash as one of my abilities which makes it pretty easy to avoid damage when the pink cards are too far apart
@koekiemonster didnt even know it sorted that way
well its an american account so i think its still representing well
or is my geographical location is the important factor? cuz im israeli and maybe 5 people here have a switch
A bunch of third parties going strong, even in Europe. Nice to see Dragon's Dogma rank on this list. It even came out in the latter part of the month, so yeah, pretty impressive.
So only 2 of the games made the list were 1st party titles (4 if you include Mario + Rabbids and Octopath Traveler, which is kinda cheating), and they only made it because they had steep discounts...
"Nintendo fans only buy 1st party games" lololol
My neck
My switch
It’s selling like a bi..
Go Cuphead! I won't be double dipping as I already own it on Steam but I'm glad it's doing well.
Love that Cuphead is so popular on Switch. It'd be interesting to see if some of Microsoft's other recent titles would succeed on the platform as well. Bring on lower-res Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2. It'll never happen, but I can dream.
Love Cuphead as much as any game in recent memory. So happy it came to Switch where I can play it finally. I will be buying the physical edition to have on the shelf while continuing on with my digital release.
True, 13/15 are third party titles. We're getting better, pals!
I have 2, 3, 5, and 14 physical.7 digital, and plan to get 6 later.
Wow, there is only 3 of these I don't have.
@Pj1 you're surprised that a game that isn't even available on the switch isn't on the list?
I'm put off by cuphead. Everyone says it's really difficult. Why so I want to play a difficult game without a pay off? It's a shame because the art style is beautiful
@JLPick The most obvious option would be Rare Replay though in my opinion... and maybe they could even make a new Perfect Dark one day? Who knows.
@JLPick super Luckys tale is coming to switch?
Only four Nintendo published titles in the top ten, and only two of them actually developed by Nintendo.
AND, it's a nice spread of big/small games by big/small developers.
Very pleasant to see.
@quinnyboy58
Yup, was announced four months ago.
@wazlon Ori is an amazing game. Can't wait to get the sequel on my One X and would double dip on first one if it hits the switch.
@Beermonkey Ori is definitely one of the best on the X-box...amazing music and just plain fun! Would be a definite welcome to Switch!
@shani I'd love for Rare Replay to come over. Would be nice to have Conker and Banjo back on a nintendo console and most Rare games came from there. I could see the Viva Piñata games on a nintendo console instead, they just have that feel...maybe nintendo could also throw in a Pikmin or 2!
Cuphead is an overrated game. It is only about art style and graphics, beyond that it is a very mediocre game.
@JLPick Have played through it twice now. When it came out and when Microsoft offered the definitive edition to owners of the original for a couple of pounds. Loved the graphical style and sound was stunning. Would happily play though a portable version again.
@quinnyboy58 @Pod Not quite. Super Lucky's Tale and Ori are both rumours, not official announcements.
I am absolutely in love with Rocket League and I'm glad to see it's still selling well. Switch is the best place to play it, if you ask me.
@Abes3 "I'm put off by cuphead. Everyone says it's really difficult. Why so I want to play a difficult game without a pay off? It's a shame because the art style is beautiful"
It's difficult, but not unfair. The art style is the payoff. It really is a sight to behold.
@Beermonkey It's just one of those great games. Flower was another on PS3 and Never Alone on the Wii U, PS4 and XBONE. They just have that appeal that just makes it GREAT to play and continue playing. I kept hoping for Ori to arrive on Switch (actually the Wii U back then) or even PS4 just to replay it...still kind of waiting, so hopefully!
@Grumblevolcano
Ah, you're right. I remember seeing a trailer, but upon looking it up, it turns out to not have been official at all.
With Cuphead doing so well on Switch, I really hope it inspires Microsoft to bring Ori and the Blind Forest over to the eShop, too!
@koekiemonster sing it brother. I’d love Atlus to share this frame of mind and give us persona.
@TYRANACLES indeed!!
For the players
@bluemage1989 Oh wow. Come to think of it, if you're not a big cartoon fan, you should really stay away from video games, especially the majority made from 1980-2001.
Wow people still want some of that Skyrim action
@ilikeike US top Eshop games included Katana Zero, I just don’t think it’s as popular in the Europe.
