Spike Chunsoft has revealed that a western release of visual novel adventure YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of this World is headed to Nintendo Switch. We do love good, snappy game titles.
Believe it or not, this game was first released way back in 1996 featuring much racier scenes than the version you'll experience today. Switch will be receiving a port of the much more recent HD remake, which has still received an 'M for Mature' rating despite the cutbacks.
The game follows the story of Takuya Arima, who receives a suspicious package from his late father. It contains a device which allows him to travel between parallel worlds, and with help from his friends, teachers, and lovers (plural, it seems), Arima must unearth the mystery of his father's legacy. We have a key feature list for you below.
Key Features
The Power of the Reflector - Explore multiple timelines and revisit events through the unique gaming mechanic of the Reflector Device. This allows you to explore every timeline in detail. Activate the Reflector Device’s Auto Divergence Map System to return to an event with more knowledge and new items.
Your Father's Clues - Solve all the mysteries of Sakaimachi to uncover the secrets lying beneath Sword Cape. Collect items from one timeline and use them in the next to unlock Sword Cape's hidden truth.
Love Beyond Worlds - Can you find the hidden world waiting beyond Sakaimachi? Fall in love with every character to reach the true ending to this 40+ hour visual novel.
Nintendo Switch will receive a Day 1 Edition which includes a voucher code for '8-BIT YU-NO'S GREAT ADVENTURE'. This add-on is an action game featuring the characters from the main game in 8-bit style.
The game will be releasing on 1st October for $49.99. At present, we only have confirmation of a North American release; here's hoping European news will follow shortly.

Nice. I've been playing a lot of visual novel games on the Switch, can't get enough of them. Will preorder this one for sure.
Yes! All for more VNs getting localized. I've been watching the anime adaption which is currently airing. It kinda gives me the impression Steins;Gate but its older, less competent but still interesting brother.
I'll probably pick this up.
If the 8-bit Yu-No's Great Adventure is anything like the 8-bit Steins;Gate then I'll pass... not being able to save your progress was a stupid decision and it was an incredibly boring back & forth affair.
It's also being censored here on both platforms, so I wouldn't bother getting it.
40+ hours visual novel? I'd rather Senrai massage my Kagura.
Btw this is not the first, Nekopara came out last year on Switch.
Mature content is only acceptable if it's delivered by a talking squirrel.
@Heavyarms55 I would think twice about that, lately Spike Chunsoft censors all western game versions the same way because of Sony (you could say they are too lazy to make 2 versions of the game)
I will wait in first place myself, if for some reason the games is less censored on non Sony platforms then I will get it.
I want physical on this one!!
@Rayquaza2510 The Switch and PS4 version censor one CG and "Some cursor interaction symbols have been replaced with the 'investigation' symbol." The Steam version won't feature this censorship.
@Rayquaza2510 I'd rather have a slice of pizza with less pepperoni than no pizza at all. But I appreciate the info. Any version is going to be censored. The original VN is chalk full of full blown porn. The MC can basically sleep with everyone, even his stepmom if I am remembering right. lol (but it's okay because his dad is dead and she's only like 6 years older than him because smut. lol)
"Mature" it's juvenile but sexually explicit.
Not saying this looks bad just kind of generic... I'd rather play Steins;Gate: Elite again. Sorry kind of got spoiled by it in regards to my time travel epic with hints of dating sim elements (I will note that while S;G has those elements it is more about the story and characters similar to The Silver Case than a true dating sim). I really should start Steins;Gate 0, but oh well I will get to 'Chronic Depression the Game' at some point.
The PC-98 version of this has some fantastic music
What's the point of removing erotic scenes from a game when making an HD remake of it? Especially if it's going to receive an M/18+ classification anyway? To pretend you're not porting a sexy game or to frustrate fans?
Might as well cut the gore and over the top fatalities from Mortal Kombat.
Even if the game has any good qualities besides the erotic scenes (though I doubt considering it's a VN), removing them is just stupid. What for? I do not understand it.
@SmaggTheSmug
Yeah, censorship of M-rated games is beyond stupid. Even if I gave a damn about this kind of game I'd be skipping just because of the cutbacks. What bothers me more though is if Nintendo is behind this, what does it mean for some other games that are going to have 'racy' content? They're footing the bill for Bayonetta 3 and 2 was already toned down significantly from the first. AstralChain has a female character in booty shorts so maybe that will have to get changed for hyper sensitive Western gamers as well.
I read the title as Yu-Gi-Oh and got very confused.
@Gamer83 It’s not Nintendo at all. Blame Sony for their changing policies within the past year regarding sexual content in games. Spike Chunsoft clearly didn’t wish to be bothered making a more complete version for Switch, so they just used the same content from the PS4 version which Sony would have made them censor.
@Wexter I mean this predates Steins;gate actually. SG Elite definitely was awesome though!
If I'm buying it, it will be the Japanese version of the remake. Can't support censored games.
@SmaggTheSmug While I don't know how much racier the original were, my guess would be that none of the console makers want eroge on their systems, if its just censored boobs you can blame CERO, they don't allow female nipples.
@Ralizah after what they did to Zanki Zero on Steam I don't trust that until I see it.
@Heavyarms55 That's not what I mean, that it essentially still is censored compared to the original is not the issue, my point is the lazyness of Spike by doing an all in censor and not like many just on the platform they need to.
I never count lack of H stuff as censorship because I don't care about H stuff in first place, but for me it is simple censor is censor, and after seeing what Spike did to Zanki Zero (which just doesn't make any sense at all) I'm cautious.
And I agree on the pizza part, but again my point is more that they seem to prefer to censor other platforms because of Sony while others like Marvelous or Idea Factory only do that on Sony systems themself.
@SmaggTheSmug That is because console makers treat THAT kind of 18+ stuff as a total no go, that's the reason why only on PC such games can have that type of content, on consoles no matter if it is 18+ game they won't allow it.
The anime is airing this season and it’s easily the worst show I’ve seen in a while, the writing is the worst offender which doesn’t bode well for a Visual Novel.
Censorship is taking away Freedom of Speech.
@Rayquaza2510 Was there censorship in Zanki Zero beyond what they detailed prior to launch? Granted, what they detailed was pretty extensive, which is a big reason I can't see myself picking that up.
While I don't appreciate regional censorship, I do at least like that Spike-Chunsoft is so transparent about it.
Am I the only person here who actively hates this genre?
I wish I could run as long as some of these characters in the trailer.
Guys, its her! It's the Girl! It's Kenna Hatano!
@Gamer83 i dont think nintendo is behind this censorship because nintendo wants more rated m games on the switch with less censorship.
"featuring much racier scenes than the version you'll experience today"
wE WoN'T TaKE AwAy YOuR gAMeS
I haven't even touched anime since the Buu Saga ended on Toonami/Cartoon Network (U.S.) and this garbage still makes me angry.
Why is it censored?
@Wexter well, its kinda what steins;gate was based on.
the original game was released in '96, steins;gate however was't really a thing until '09, 13 years later. steins;gate is essentially an improved version of it and probably wouldn't exist without it, so its kinda foolish to try and hold it up to steins;gates standard.
@Shadowmoon522 I get that. Just that thanks to it (Steins;Gate) I have kind of been spoiled on a better version of what YU-NO was so its more difficult to go back to it as someone who has never experienced it before. Not saying that I can't appreciate it for what it was and what it did for the genre, but, rather as a new potential buyer it just doesn't do anything for me. I do enjoy older VNs from that era like The Silver Case and still think the writing is sharp and witty with a self-referential script.
Does not help that the new anime is kind of ehhh from what I've seen. Checked it out last night to get a taste of what the VN could be and it did nothing for me.
@VN1X That wasn't really appropriate, was it?
I would prefer the 8 bit action side dish over that main course
@PBandSmelly Yes, you are
More weeb games, pass.
How can you censor a M rated game when it's already rated for mature/adult audience? What is the point in that it doesn't make sense. Who are you protecting 18+ year old college students? When will people grow up and see the world for what it really is and not for what we pretend it to be.
@The__Goomba I bet this VN would probably be way better. (But I have not watched the Anime yet, so I don't have an opinion on it).
The pre-order for the limited edition is a really fair price imo. You get a pillow case, an hardcover art book, 5 CD Soundtrack and the collectors box! Wish I had the money now to pre-order it, but maybe later, but only if I have the money.
@Zorox88 I think it more has to do with US porn laws as to why it can't contain explicit sex scenes. It is especially true when a lot of these games are dealing with characters under the age of 18 (you can imply or flat-out say it happened in a narrative, but you can't show it). So its just easier to just remove those from a regular retail release. Japanese console versions tend to do the same thing by removing the scenes in question. Also, the ESRB would give your game an automatic 18+/AO label and then it can't be sold in retail stores and you lose massive sales numbers if that happens. The same things happen in film where getting an A/NC-17 would kill your theater release as no theater would show it.
If we're talking about removing explicit content in general no idea. Recently Japanese publishers have been making two localized versions recently with Nintendo (of all companies) being more open about that content on their platforms than Sony.
@The_Goomba yea I found the anime to be really bad too, which was dissapointing. the VN could be better, but I'm not getting very optimistic for it
@Wexter So the Switch won't get the Brazzers app eh?
@Trajan Probably note my friend. The best you can hope for is a web browser.
This remake is a watered down version of the original, and the anime is based on that degraded remake as well. Definitely try the original game, as it's a masterpiece, otherwise get this one if you don't mind changes in quality.
@BenAV Do you have any recommendations for VNs on switch?
I loved the Zero Escape franchise, really liked Steins Gate. I just got Ace Attorney trilogy and plan to eventually get Death Mark and Worldend Syndrome.
Are they talking also about the NISAmerica version as well or standalone release?
This game has been heavily censored since it was ported from home computers to the Sega Saturn back in 1997, so I really don't see why there's any reason to be upset about one additional censored image. In this game's 23 years of existence, it has literally only been uncensored for ONE of those years. And I doubt anyone here knew about it until it arrived to consoles sans the sex.
