You might remember that Japan's Golden Week holiday has seen a slight delay in the publication of Famitsu's chart data. We recently received data covering 22nd - 28th April, where the Nintendo Switch was just over 5,000 unit sales away from taking over PS4's lifetime total in the region.
While it's almost certain that Switch has now overtaken PS4's total, this week's Famitsu data sadly doesn't contain hardware sales. We'll make sure to update this post if such data surfaces online, but it looks like we might have to wait until next week's charts come in before we can know for sure.
Any surprises this week? Let us know in the comments.

Smash never gets old.
Anyone here own days gone? What do you think?
Why did Japanese gamers prefer Blocky textures from Minecraft than Dragon Quest Builders 2 with OMG So Cute furnitures and objects ?
I didn't understand the logic. 😕
In my opinion, from Aesthetic aspect, Dragon Quest Builders 2 is FAR BETTER than Minecraft.
@Anti-Matter Maybe Japanese gamers prefer Blocky textures from Minecraft than Dragon Quest Builders 2 with OMG So Cute furnitures and objects ?
😉
Wow, people sure like Smash Bros.!
It's.. almost scary really. 16 out of 20 titles are Switch titles, with the remaining 4 being PS4 games. Just shows the dominance of the Switch in Japan currently with Playstation maintaining some popularity of its own. Meanwhile, Xbox is nowhere to be seen.
Happy to see taiko charting again.
I don't understand why Microsoft even bothers with the japanese market
@TommyTendo I also wonder this when it comes to Nintendo and the UK. It's not as bad but British people really try their best to emulate americans in their gaming preferences.
Did someone looked at the linked charts? Media Create and Famitsu have partially completely different rankings.
Only four PS4 games in the top 20, Japan really can't get enough of the Switch do they?
I'm still slightly ashamed that I don't have Super Smash Bros Ultimate myself. The only time I ever get to play it is whenever my brother plays it and we play together. I really need to get around purchasing this game.
When a Dragon Quest character gets revealed for DLC, it will quickly rise back to the top.
Nice to see a western game on top 👍. Good news Bandai Namco break 100K on Switch just with retail. And Nintendo showing everyone on how you make a Big exciting game on Switch.
Zodiac Age on the way out with 26K in Japan (on a bigger Switch install base than PS4 in 2017) and already vanished in the UK top 40.
SE putting effort into DQ - so hopefully they get a big seller out of it.
@Baart No, don't agree with that one. British market is completely different to the Japanese Market.
@Yosher
Well, Minecraft is technically Microsoft >.>
But yeah, what games does Microsoft even have?
Was there any special holiday or something in Japan? Those numbers are very high, and with so many games being sold, I am certain that hardware moved like crazy this week (even more than usual)
Good to see Zelda back in the top 10 and with pretty incredible numbers as well!
10 thousands after 2 years in the market is incredible
@Anti-Matter It's almost like people play Minecraft for the gameplay and not the graphics, or something!
Every time I look at these charts I think, "man, that is a lot of NSFW games". Then I remember how to read. But man, this week's top 20 is like... WAY MORE NSFW games than usual. Good job, Nintendo Switch for Wombats!
