For many of us, Super Mario Bros.' World 1-1 level is permanently etched onto the back of our eyelids. Who could forget that iconic start - Question Mark Block, row of blocks with Goomba underneath, Warp Pipe, and so on? Magical.
Anyway, before we get too misty-eyed, it's time to think about how that level might play out if it was completely transformed into other genres. What if Mario wasn't a platforming hero? What if he liked to be the star of text-based adventures or FMV games, or even take part in a battle royale scenario?
Well, as it happens, that's exactly what the folks at the Big Breakfast Collective have imagined in this video below. Team members Alex Williams, Phillip Busch, Dennis Lorenze, and Mattia Traverso have recreated that opening level in ten different ways, sharing the project on Itch.io. We don't think it perfectly suits every style thought up here, but some certainly give our trusty 1-1 an interesting spin.
Would you like to see Mario branch out into even more genres in the future? What would your ideal Mario spin-off look like? Let us know in the comments.

Neat.
All I have say is neat nl.
The idea had a lot of potential, yet it seems the execution was not what I was expecting. Still gave me a smirk though.
There are lots of cool things in here well put together little vid. Monkey island mario yes please lol
"It screams in pain as it grasps its last breath."
So many things wrong with that sentence:
1. It's gasp, not grasp.
3. Screaming is an exhale action, gasping is an inhale action. While circular breathing is possible, both these actions are performed through the mouth and are therefore unable to be performed at the same time. As a side note, Goombas appear to have no nose and so couldn't perform circular breathing even if they wanted to.
3. Goombas don't scream when stepped on, they go "Boop."
4. Grabbing the air, let alone the specific breath you've exhaled is nigh impossible without specialised equipment.
5. Goombas have no arms, and so couldn't grab anything even if they wanted to.
Whilst you understand the practical application of plumber boots to a Goombas skull, your knowledge of Goomba physiology is sorely lacking. 4 out of 10, see me.
@Bliquid +1, couldn't agree more. Nice idea, poor execution. Only the 3d mario seemed to have some effort into it.
@shaneoh
With that kind of information I suspect you of killing at least one Goomba... Murder!
@SetupDisk
Hah, you'll never prove it. Goomba bodies disappear, it's the perfect crime.
Well. That was 2'53 very long minutes.
And not a single smile on my face.
that was lame. sorry
Wow, that was a waste of my time.
@PBandSmelly
That was definitely the best part.
Eh. The Snoop Dogg edition is still the best one.

That looks like a zombie killing game..
I always wanted there to be a 16 bit beat'em up Mario game. Like double dragon or the TMNT arcade.
What did I just watch
Wow, a whole article about this video. Nice.
@shaneoh "Grasp" could very well be intended as a figurative action in that sentence.
