Following the reveal of Pokémon Sword and Shield for the Nintendo Switch during last week's Pokémon Direct, it's been discovered Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures Inc. filed a trademark in Japan for Armoured Mewtwo earlier on in the same month. The trademark covers videogames, merchandising and events.
If you keep up with Pokémon news, you may or may not have already heard a rumour about armoured pocket monsters coming to the latest generation of games. Alternatively, this trademark could be tied to the official Trading Card Game or the upcoming movie, Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution.
Feel free to speculate in the comments below.

Weird... but I suppose armored Pokémon could make sense for Shield...
However the real question is will we have Pokémon wielding weapons in Sword??
Pikachu use dual blades!
Just so you all know, whenever Pokémon trademark everything it’s always about the TCG and everyone is always disappointed.
@TheFanatic Makes sense
Personally, I haven't heard any rumor about armored Pokémon, so I'm a little confused here. Yet, have we already forgotten that armored Mewtwo is an estabilished character that has existed for a long time and makes total sense with the upcoming reboot/remake of Mewtwo Strikes Back?
I think people are looking too much into the rumor.
100% this: ''Alternatively, this trademark could be tied to the official Trading Card Game or the upcoming movie, Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution.''
@Bobb @TheFanatic Alright, bit of info on this; We know that there's merchandise of Mewtwo for the upcoming film. One is a regular Mewtwo (plushy iirc), the other one is still a ''secret'', but it was called ''Armored Mewtwo''. So that pretty much confirms he appears in the film. This comes from an insider that knows pretty much everything about upcoming Pokemon merchandise; Here's the Tweet from last month: https://twitter.com/Paulrobertryan/status/1096355673028341761
And it's very likely that the fake leaks played into this, because it would look like ''evidence'' when armored Mewtwo would eventually be confirmed. That's what I would do if I were to make a fake leak anyway.
People forgot that the first movie featured an armored Mewtwo?
I wish they’d pick a gimmick and stick with it: Megas, Regional Variants, Z-Moves, Armored...
@justin233 This is exactly what I thought. I’m getting tired of it. Hopefully this isn’t a real thing.
Hmmmm..... armoured Pokémon... Sounds cool. As long as they do it for most/all of them.
I thought Mewtwo was armoured in the couple of anime episodes he was in before the movie?
But Aegislash is already armoured with a sword and shield.
@TheFanatic
To be honest, I am not a big fan of temporary and unstable revolutions. I wish that there is no armour...
@nessisonett It appeared in an anime episode that should happen during the time lapse of the movie
I'm avoiding details to not spoil the movie for people who are experiencing it for the first time on the reboot
@gloom @justin233 Alolans, or rather regional variants, is the one thing that is unique among those gimmicks and should continue. No powerups, just different typings. This is pretty much the fanmade Delta typing in official form.
@N1ntendodo Oh and the powerups in Alola gen were the Z moves. So, I would look forward to the Galar region variants.
@justin233 : I wish they had done more with them.
The idea of Alolan Pokémon was great, but there was only about a dozen of them, all from Gen I, when there were plenty of other Pokémon that would have benefited from the concept.
Where was gelato form Vanilluxe, hula-skirt Jynx, gym junkie Snorlax, or the deadly durian form Tropius?
Megas were also underwhelming as they had stopped introducing more of them. If certain Pokémon won't be getting Mega forms, then they could at least add new evolutions or baby forms for Pokémon that have been long neglected.
@ALinkToMyProfile I like the idea of mage pika myself
Armoured Mewtwo is totally just the movie, wth guys? We all know they can't remake the movie without featuring Mewtwo's famed armour.
There was a 4chan post dated 20 february that goes
"This is it. Believe it now or later.
>Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield
>Region is Great Britain
>Legendary Pokémon are metal snake and wooden horse
>Armored Evolutions
>Armored Charizard, Armored Mewtwo, Armored Flygon, Armored Zeraora...
>Meltan ties into Armored Evolution and Legendary lore"
It got at least the name right
Maybe the rest was to troll people, as the armoured thing wasn't new.
The legendaries probably will be wolves, otherwise the logos would make no sense?
Armored Mewtwo has been a thing for decades, my bet is that it’ll be involved in the TCG again because of the Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution movie coming out in July in Japan this year, and that it could potentially have a GO tie in (think Event Pikachu, Sunglasses Squirtle etc.).
Could there be “Armored Evolutions” in Sword and Shield? Sure. I think they could be really cool plus that means Gen 4 remake Armored Infernape 😎. But this whole thing is still only a rumor and there is no concrete evidence to back it up.
@nessisonett Yes he was an armor slave to Giovanni when Gary fought them. By the time Ash got to Viridian City, Giovanni left the gym in the hands of Jessie, James, and Meowth to pursue Mewtwo after he broke free from captive and fly away to the Orange Islands. Giovanni thought Mewtwo plan to abandon his maker but why Mewtwo really left was to leave Kanto and create his own breed of copy Pokemon and to seek Mew.
@NullPointerExcep Armored Mewtwo was known before February 20. So it's very likely he just included that to make it sound more believable. The connection between Meltan and armored evolutions doesn't make a lot of sense either; yes, he's metal, but he's some kind of liquid mercury or a ferrofluid. And giving Mewtwo and Charizard an armoured evolution whilst both of them already have TWO mega evolutions seems a bit too much. Besides, what are they going to do? Add Steel to every armored evolution? Plus the snake and horse legendaries; None of it make a lot of sense when you think about it.
@Kainbrightside The name ''Beowulf'' has little to do with actual wolves...
It's worth noting that Armored Mewtwo is a thing in the upcoming movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution
It's definitely a new thing. Mewtwo has never worn armour before. Certainly not in the first pokemon movie. Definitely won't do that in the remake coming soon with this trademark.
I look forward to seeing an armoured Flabebe
I think this probably isn't related to the games. I hope it isn't. Mega Pokemon felt like a cool idea until they stoppped making them. An "Armored" form in-game feels like another way to give favouritism to the same handful of common faces, while neglecting others.
@justin233 I agree. I think there’s so much potential for more megas and regional forms. I couldn’t care less about Z moves though.
It would be great if Gamefreak would stick with a concept and run with it rather than just drop it in favour of some new gimmick.
That said, I’m always happy to see non-battle gimmicks stick to just one generation for some variety e.g secret bases, poke pelago
You know what? I think regional variants should be introduced and represented from 1 or 2 gens in a current gen mainline Pokemon title. No sense to go all out and have nothing in the end. So, I say regional variants of Johto, Hoenn, and/or even Sinnoh (in anticipation of the Sinnoh remake) should do.
Great. But can I buy armor for my Pokemon? I want my Pikachu done up in a hundred pounds of steel.
Plot twist: actual armored pokémon, but it is just cosmetic
Most likely the movie.......HOWEVER, it would be cool if they made it a DLC attire for Mewtwo in Smash. Promote the movie AND have a badass outfit. Its a win win.
@N1ntendodo They should expand more with Megas and other regional variants, this concept has virtually existed since gen 2, like Scyther evolving into Scizor by trading it while holding a metal coat. It's not that exciting really.
Intersesting! However, this probobly relates to the new movie.
