Square Enix has today shared two new trailers for upcoming Final Fantasy games on Nintendo Switch. The trailers have arrived alongside news that both games are now available to pre-order from the Nintendo eShop.
We've gathered these trailers and information on each release for you below.
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is set to include "high-definition graphics, original and remastered soundtracks, and a new trial mode". Other additional enhancements have been shared in a press release today:
- License Reset Function: By talking to Clan Centurio’s leader Montblanc in Rabanastre, players can reset and change their party member’s jobs, allowing them to customise the jobs of their party as desired.
- Additional Gambit Sets: Gambits allow players to customize their party’s AI. Players can now create three unique sets, allowing players to switch between sets for different situations, such as map exploration or boss fights.
- Improved ‘New Game+’: Allows users to start the game with party members at level 90 and carry over some items like weapons, magic and gil obtained during previous playthroughs.
Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster
The new trailer for Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster showcases the "emotional story and exciting gameplay players can look forward to". This one will include modern visuals, the ability to switch between the original or re-arranged soundtrack, and dozens of hours of adventure and gameplay content.
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age launches on Switch on 30th April; Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster arrives just before that on 16th April. As noted above, you can now pre-order both games digitally if you wish.
Will you be grabbing any of these? Are you looking forward to playing Final Fantasy VII on Switch instead? Share your thoughts with us below.

Can't wait to replay FF12. Definitelty one of the most fun RPGs I ever played (even if the story is crappy).
Have both of these on PS4 but I am tempted again by the portability...
Never played a main line Final Fantasy game before, just the Crystal Chronicles ones. Should be interesting.
Got FFX pre-ordered on Amazon, even though it will have that awful banner about the download for X-2
CANT WAIT TO PLAY BLITZBALL!!
Preorders have been live for a month or so, at least.
Looks like this is the definitive version of Zodiac Age, as those few changes will be pretty substantial. Especially being able to easily change jobs.
As much as I love Wakka, I once saw him described as a racist wielding a Mitre Tactic. What a legend.
Which one would you recommend to start with?
The ports look good, may double dip
@Ralizah They’re talking about digital preorders. Those just went live today.
Final Fantasy VII is available for preorder on the eShop now as well.
Lol at the sony ponies that thought these games would remain sony exclusives.
@LunarFlame17 Ah! I should read the actual text of the article, huh?
@Ralizah That’s not a horrible idea. 😉
Well I have to get 12, it's coming out on my birthday! What better way to celebrate! Oh and I might as well pick up 10 also. FF belongs on Nintendo systems and I want to show my support.
To be able to see Lulu's tatas on a Nintendo system for the first time is a dream come true to me so I'm getting both of these.
"Additional Gambit Sets: Gambits allow players to customize their party’s AI. Players can now create three unique sets, allowing players to switch between sets for different situations, such as map exploration or boss fights."
Makes sense that the seeming precursor to Paradigm Shift would come full circle to take some pages out of it. Especially if they allow switching sets in battle.
And I definitely like what I see on one of my most anticipated 2019 Switch releases' eShop page overall. The price lands below 3000 RUB (I was getting used to many meaty JRPGs like Disgaea and ToV costing around 3500) and the file size is listed as 12.6 Gb (I was beginning to brace myself for 20+). My body is ready.
Bruh already got FFXII on preorder, have had it preordered for like a month. I am going to replay the living sith out of that game. Favorite Final Fantasy.
To my shame I have never played a mainline Final Fantasy entry. Of all the FF games coming to Switch can someone recommend which one I should try first?
Playing through 9 again has been an absolute joy, so these will both be day one purchases along with 7.
Hopefully 8 arrives at some point in the future too.
Man was Final Fantasy VII really 4gb? Now I had to delete Fortnite just to have that game on my Switch.
I played XII back when it first came out and absolutely hated it, mainly due to its battle system. I'm currently playing IX for the first time and having a lot of fun and will be getting VII and X, maybe I'll give XII another go at some point
@Ooccoo_Jr FFX is probably the easiest to get into for a modern player, but if you only ever play one of these games, it should be FFVII. While dated, VII was an industry-shaking masterpiece and is still a lot of fun today.
FFXII is great, but it plays nothing like the rest of the series.
I'll be getting X for sure (I mean I already have it pre-ordered).
XII is a bit more tricky, I think it's a great game, but it's also a game that takes a lot out of you, there is just so much to it. It's not that long since I played it on the PS4, as much as I want to support Square for giving support to the Switch I don't think I can play that game again anytime soon.
Also very excited for 7 and Chocobo's Dungeon.
Never played a final fantasy, only something on snes years ago, this may be my first final fantasy after I complete Xenoblade 2.
So let's see these sizes... FFX and X-2 are 26.9GB in total, and the EU eShop has a 14.0GB initial size listed (probably for just X).
FFXII is 12.6GB, and FFVII is 3.7GB
The Japanese eShop's sizes and language selections match the EU ones(all three games include Japanese and English), except X and X-2 is 26.9GB from the start in a single download.
So it seems X, X-2, and XII are each individually under 16GB, which is a bit of a surprise since they've been a lot larger on other platforms.
VII I was expecting a 4.3GB size since that's the PS4 size, so that's smaller than elsewhere too.
Also, the Japanese X and X-2 supports English, and it's possible it's on a single 32GB cart?
I've got WoFF Maxima on physical preorder. I have bought FF9 but it took a backseat because Undertale went on offer and I thought I would try something a bit different.
I had FFX on preorder from Day 1 but I'll be cancelling it and going with Play Asia to get both on the cart. FF7 will be day 1 and FFXII may have to wait as I think I'll be grabbing Dragons Dogma first.
So many RPG's, so little time
@Chimaj 10, no doubt..... Last of the great FF's in my opinion, but really looking forward to playing through 12 on the go.
The zodiac age one is basically just another starwars movie going by the trailer..lol.
@Predator
You missed out, Final Fantasy 6 - 10 are the best in the series and some of these games are some of the best games ever created
I’m the fan that was obsessed 7 when it came out, tried 8 but got bored quickly with it, then missed them all until 15 on the PS4, which was great at the start then collapsed at the end. I know it’s a series steeped in history, but after watching the new trailers for 9, 10, and 12 I’m finding it hard to grasp onto something from each that differentiates them from the others that 7 was so good at doing.
I’m not saying they are unique, but the trailers aren’t showing me what that is for each, and being released so close together isn’t helping.
@Ooccoo_Jr I would recommend 9. It's the best FF in the series in my opinion and easy for newbies.
Got my XII cart already preordered.
FF7 is £4 cheaper then FF9. Now that is unexpected.
Switch has become my go to for RPG’s as I don’t have much time to game at home anymore. Have them both on PS4 but don’t have the time to play them
@MrGawain I mean if we’re being really here the unique thing about ff7 is how terrible the translation and non sensical the story is
Really looking forward to ff 7 and 10 especially. Not to bothered about 12 I didn't like the combat system. I'd like the 13 series to come on the switch though.
Xii. I’d recommend. X is ok. The characters really held at back. Most of the supporting cast wasn’t that great and Tidus is legitimately one of the worst protagonists in series history
@garydbz25 hBe you played 13? They were decent. Definitely not as they were made out to be but I don’t think they were anything special either. I’d probably play them again although to be honest I’m not sure how they’d play on switch. I think a lot of work would need to be done and I’m not sure if SE will put in the money to port them properly
I have FFXII on PS2 and PS4...and soon to be Switch. I love this game and will be buying it for a 3rd time!
Already have X | X-2 HD for my Vita, but I've never played XII before, so I'm really looking forward to that.
@Ooccoo_Jr IX to me is the perfect mix of oldschool and newschool FF!
@arekdougy @invictus4000 @Ralizah Thanks all! Reckon I'll try IX right now then check out VII depending on how I get on with it.
Additional gambit setups in FFXII is a literal game changer. I didn’t really enjoy the original but I was at a time in my life where I was falling out of gaming and a game as huge as FFXII just wouldn’t stick. Stuff like this and the fast forward feature might make me like it better.
Shame that it seems they didn’t overhaul the bland characters along with it.
Cannot wait for FFX. X2 I am less fussed by as the whole perfect ending requirements spoils the game for me (far too many obscure things that basically mean you need to read a guide to 100% it)
XII I am excited for as I didn’t complete it, but got a decent way through
VII I would have got but only completed it again a few months ago.
@bluesun
"FFXII is 12.6GB"
WHAT?!
FF XII the Zodiac Age PS4 version was about 41 GB.
I love FFXII... but that file size is giving me heart burn...
@Anti-Matter Is your comment a typo? Do PS4 games get as large as 41GB??? If so, I had no idea. That's crazy big to me.
@Ooccoo_Jr
Final Fantasy X. Start with X.
Yes, people will tell you 7 or 9. But those are PSone games with severely dated graphics. Start with X, get into the series, then go back and enjoy 7 and 9.
@Quincy
I have FF XII the Zodiac Age PS4 version.
It said the file size was about 41 GB.
@Anti-Matter Wow! I've not been a PS guy for over a decade and had no idea. ...I don't think there's ever been a better reason to continue making games on cartridges. (So the cartridge supplies the needed memory) - Thanks for the pic!
Will pick up 12 for sure. I liked 10 a lot, but not enough for a replay. That laughing scene is still etched in my brain forever.
They got me on this. Just purchased IX and now preordered the other three.
Great games, loved 12 a real lot, change whas starting here
@Anti-Matter Yep, that's from the eShop, seems it's a lot smaller than on PS4.
I was expecting it'd need a 32GB cart, but 12.6 is even smaller than X/X-2 (12.6 vs 12.9 vs 14.0, if the eShop sizes do represent a FFX/X-2 split).
Though even at 12.6GB, seems it's still in the top 2% of Switch game sizes. (Using the data from the eShop sizes thread here, and removing bundles, top 1%=13.9GB, 2%=12.0GB, 5%=6.9GB, 10%=3.9GB, 50%=505MB)
With 50GB Blu-ray discs to use, PS4 games can be enormous, and there's even games filling 2 discs now (RDR2). I wonder what was changed to get that big a saving. Hopefully it won't have audio complaints like Dark Souls.
X/X-2 are good fun, will probably get them again.
12 I'm undecided on, I bought it for the PS2 and never finished so maybe i'll give that another go as well.
@Quincy Yeah games are getting stupidly huge these days.
For someone whose entire FF experience is limited to FF14, would you recommend my entry point here is X-X2 or 12?
@Ralizah I was looking at some screen shot of VII on the eshop and man oh man does it look dated lol. Looks like they used 20 polygons per character lol. Even IX looks far better in that department.
@Spoony_Tech The backgrounds and cutscenes still look pretty great today, but yeah, the character models at the time were awful. FF7 characters look like terrifying lego/human hybrids. Even worse in the remaster, where they give them mouths. Cloud's rudimentary character model looks really silly with a mouth. At least it's not like the PC release, where certain characters, such as Sephiroth, had little black O's for mouths, making them look quite silly during in-engine cutscenes.
The sheer gap in polygonal complexity between even FF7 and FF8 is enormous. Character models weren't terribly detailed, but they WERE distinctly human-shaped, a luxury often deprived of characters in FF7.
Interestingly, the models used for the characters IN BATTLES are MUCH higher poly, and more in line with what you'd see in something like FFIX.
vs
Look at the difference!
I’m definitely preordering VII, XII, and the X/X-2 combo on the eShop real soon. Is it silly that I wish X and X-2 were separate icons though? It really doesn’t matter I guess.
@scoobdoo X is a really good entry point.
Switches library just gets better and better...but...Why even bother putting these on Xbox One...?
Considering picking these up. I've played the final fantasy games up to 9, as well as the tactics games and XV, which I actually had a good time playing, despite the hatred it seems to get. I own X/X-2 on PS4, and recently purchased the 360 version of XIII for Xbox One. Still haven't played either of those. My favorite is VIII, though, probably because of the age I was when it came out, but I did play it again a couple years ago and still liked it a lot. Hopefully someday we can get a remaster of it.
@Quincy Doom is 120gb on PC, and was 90gb on Xb1 and Ps4 last I booted those up. Welcome to the current gen. While Doom is a biggun, 20-60gb is average for current AAA games.
@Bunkerneath
Good to see there are people that understand greatness here.
Blitzball and Triple Triad are the best minigames ever created.
@Timppis YES!
I still have a save point on my PS2 for when you start being able to play blitzball. (Jecht Shot Version III, YES!!!)
And Triple Triad is mental, play it against everyone at least once
I haven't played anything beyond 6 because I didn't own any Sony consoles until a PS4. I'm gonna pick up a few of these FF games and start playing through them on Switch. I'll be happy to have physical releases.
I played X and XII on the PS2 back in the days but skipped X-2 after trying it. I now own the X/X-2 collection for PS3 (collectors edition), PS4 and Vita. Have still to play that X-2 because I think it's gonna be a bad game..
I also have XII on PS4 but have not had the time to play it. Too many RPG:s to finish.
To have these games on a Nintendo console is awesome as fudge but as I already own them I'm not really holding my breath and waiting the release date. Might get them digitally at some point because I have the PS3, PS4 and Vita copies physical.
I just got an email update from Play-Asia that the Multi-language Asia version of Final Fantasy X & X-2 HD Collection will have both games on a single cartridge instead of on 2 cartridges. This is such fantastic news, this is something Capcom will never do.
@SamuraiPanda what's worse is that they aren't releasing 0, 1 OR 4 on card... Unfortunately such behaviour is a boycott for me. They could have at least done one of them...
