T’is the season of failed festivals, although the latest on the list arguably isn’t quite on par with the high-profile Fyre fiasco.
An unofficial event – billed as 'the Fortnite event of the year' by the organisers and promising rock climbing, go karts, laser tag, plus the requisite dose of the most popular Battle Royale game on the planet – left many attendees unhappy due to long queues, poor planning and staff shortages. Stations to sit and play the free-to-play game were present and correct, but there weren't nearly enough to satisfy the 2,500 fans who turned up to share their enthusiasm for battling royally.

While Kotaku drew comparisons between this and the multi-million dollar fraud-fest that recently inspired Hulu and Netflix specials, we doubt attendees to this Norwich-based weekend event had similar expectations to those paying thousands of dollars to party with influencers on Pablo Escobar’s private Caribbean island.
It seems Fortnite Live attendees expected more, though. Staged at Norfolk showground, tickets started at £12 – going up by another £20 for ‘unlimited access’ - but visitors soon got miffed when it became clear that the organisers simply weren’t prepared for the number of attendees.
BBC News spoke to one Oliver Phillips who called the event “pretty rubbish [...] the sort of thing you see at a school fete.” Mr Phillips also described the ‘cave experience’ as a “trailer, no bigger than a car, with a tunnel going through it”. Let’s see what he means:

Hmm. To be fair, a video update from the organisers – which has since been removed – showed an indoor area that was actually better than we expected after reading reports, but queues are never going to go down well, especially if you’ve forked out for the deluxe ‘unlimited access wristband’ and end up waiting in line to play a game you can play at home instantly, and for free.
The company that organised the event apparently has others planned for the future, so hopefully they'll be better prepared next time.
Were expectations simply too high or was this an avoidable state of affairs? Did you attend the event? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Seems to be about the same quality as the game that it's based on.
Better off going to Chucky Cheese with your Nintendo Switch.
T’is the season of failed festivals? Nonsense, I’ve literally come back from a cracker for a mere £20.
Hahahahaha. Never played it but I’ve seen my play it and it looks awful
@oats-81 I was going to say something like that but what you said works well enough.
From what I read somewhere, they also charged more money if you wanted to play the game, even if you got the unlimited pass, though I'm not sure if this is true. Anyway, it seems like they should have been expecting this since the event didn't had any official support from Epic, though even official events can be terrible as well (like the Pokémon Go one). I would be extremely mad if I was one of those unfortunate parents that had to pay for this silly event only to see your son disappointed.
Sadly this type of thing seems to happen all the time I’ve been to food festivals where there was like 1 food stall lol
Gasp, an event organized by fans is sub par.
Apex already killed Fortnite (at least the memes have told me so), didn't all these kids get the note?
Yet another reason to avoid anything associated with Fortnite.
Fits the game.
This a disgrace, you can’t play Fortnite during No Fortnite February. It’s illegal.
Why would anyone take the whole family to an event without doing any research first? Unfortunately some people won’t learn the right lessons in life without losing money first.
I’d say this is more like a Dashcon than it is a Fyre Festival.
Natural selection at its finest
Wow. The overwhelming lack of preparation makes me cringe.
@Giygas_95 This is the perfect description of this event. Well done.
I don't play the game. I've tried it, it's fun, but I just have too many other games that I'm enjoying more.
I think it's unfair to associate the game of Fortnite with an UNOFFICIAL event that was merely trying to cash in on it's popularity.
@oats-81 @Spoony_Tech
….Yeah but you should pick up a flu shot before heading to Chucky Cheese!
the heck is a "school fete"?
"It smells funny in there..."
"No it doesn't."
Fortnite peaked a couple of months ago and is on its way out.
@Mando44646 A school fair, I looked it up.
@Mountain_Man I can see that, I mean it is just a kids fad after all and we all know how those never last for long.
Apex legends is The New Kid on the block!.... sorry Epic ur fortnite was sooooo last year, unless you can give us Nintendo switch gamers Save the World campaign then I am In! Plus wasn't it rumored that Apex legends in is deed coming to the Nintendo Switch? Almost confirmed anyways just a wild guess.
Why would people go to a Fortnite event to do rock climb walls and laser tag?
When Pokemon does an event its all Pokemon theme'd. When Minecraft has an event, it's all Minecraft themed.
Soooo are they doing laser tag and rock walls while pretending to play Fortnite IRL? Is that the idea?
OUCH. How embarrassing.
So many F2P video games lack substance and reason to invest these days. The return on investment for anything other than you might have something someone else doesn’t, and playing the game makes you happy. Shucks, happy hour can do that after work, that’s why it’s called happy hour!! TBH Apex Legends launching on Switch would be good for 4-5 months. Only to have something else come along. Tetris 99 on the other hand... That game definitely has staying power! I don’t see Fortnite crashing anytime soon. It’s core fan base will keep it going. It’s just not the hot title anymore...
Even Disneyland has queues. We're British we're good at queuing. Maybe they should have limited tickets but I'd say 2,500 is still quite an impressive turnout for a small operation.
Fingers crossed it kills the franchise!
