After being announced for the Switch in September, the critically-acclaimed mobile sensation Downwell will make its way to the Switch next year on 31st January. The publisher Devolver Digital reportedly confirmed the date over on its Discord channel.
The title is a roguelike, platforming, shmup mash-up and includes a TATE mode so you can enjoy the game vertically. You take control of an individual who dives down a never-ending well and must defeat enemies, visit shops and collect treasure along the way. The procedurally generated design ensures no two trips down the well are ever the same.
Features:
- The Amazing Gunboots – The fashionable and lethal Gunboots allow players to unleash a torrent of firepower on the nasty creatures dwelling in the well and slow your decent with each shot.
- Unique Weapons & Items – Get different weapons, shop for peculiar items and obtain powerful upgrades that all stack and affect the way you play!
- A New Adventure Every Time – Each level in Downwell is procedurally generated, so no two trips down the well are ever the same providing a fresh new adventure each time!
As previously confirmed, Special Reserve Games is teaming up with Devolver Digital to release a physical version of this title.
Will you jump down the well when this game arrives on the Switch eShop? Let us know in the comments.

Im holding out for the physical. looks fun!
I played this game on the PS4 Pro over a year ago, this is the type of game that shows off the 4K and HDR of a Pro console.
I'm sure some people on here are going to dismiss it because it has "mobile" in its association.
Does look rather fun.
Downwell rules, but I’m so awful at it. I’ve never gotten past the 3rd world.
I highly recommend it!
I tried picking up on iOS but I didn’t like the controls.
I’m eagerly awaiting this release but I wonder how much it will cost?
If there is no discount on release I might hold off as Devolver Digital discount their games quickly and regularly as far as I can tell.
Downwell is pretty much a perfect game. Unique concept with simple, tight controls, and easily understood, but flipping difficult to master.
So good on PC with a controller, but I found it awful on mobile because your thumbs are in the way of what's next. Therefore switch will be best, buttons, Tate, toilet.
I picked this up on my phone but didn’t get on with the touch controls. I’ve been waiting for this to come to Switch so it’ll be a day one purchase from me.
These games in the Switch makes absolutely sense.
I'm on them when they're interesting.
Switch basically is a portable after all, that can be easily connected to the TV. So portable games, makes sense
Finally! I was hoping it'd be out a bit sooner, but this'll sure beat playing on my phone.
@imgrowinglegs I played this on an old iPad that could only run it at about half speed. I got to the final battle that way! Maybe with proper buttons and on the Switch I’ll do a bit better and at full speed!
Great game though.
Yet another mobile game?
I'm not sure that goes down well with Switch gamers.
With all the games that are supporting Tate mode on Switch, I am surprised Nintendo hasn't released some kind of official grip for joycons and Switch in that mode. I know some random kickstarters and 3rd parties have put out a few things but nothing officially licensed by Nintendo as far as I know.
Oh right, this particular game? If you read NL comments frequently, you already know how little I think of mobile games.
I bought the flip grip so I’ll take a look at this
Been waiting for this one! I didn’t wanna buy it on my phone since I knew it was coming to Switch, haha.
I’ve had my eye on this for a while. I like a bit of TATE.
Speaking of which, I wish Puyo Puyo Tetris had a simple full screen taye mode !
Hot dang!
Been hoping this would show up!
(orders Flip Grip)
@shani It is one of the best mobile games and it isnt littered with microtransactions, so this is a mobile game I welcome
This will be my fourth copy of this game.
Anyone on the fence, this is not a 'mobile' game. It's a pitch-perfect, tight as nails, gameplay mechanic and loop masterpiece for portrait/TATE screens.
Subsequently, the creator was hired by Nintendo.
