Mario Tennis Aces Serves Up Luma, Pauline And Boom Boom In Early 2019

Trying really hard to resist the temptation of buying the game, but these characters are really enticing.

Who else is going to buy this game now, just for Pauline?

This is a very good game but the longevity of your play and enjoyment I think depends on having someone of a similar skill level to compete with locally. Most of the online matches I play seem to be fairly one sided one way or the other

Pauline looks fantastic. I hope we see her in Mario Kart one day. She would totally rock a biker outfit.

Luma too cute! This game is on the list but smash is my last game this year.

So Nintendo haven't forgotten about Boom Boom's existence.

A classic character that's been in a few recent Mario games, surely a better choice for Smash Bros. than Pirahna plant.

So is this the way Nintendo keeps from have to put that dumb White bar at the top of there retail games? By releasing free DLC so people will still have to purchase a Micro SD Card because they are also using to small of a cartridges also like alot of third partys are do on Switch were you have to download so much of the game?

@mowerdude Digital downloads are more cost effective then Physical cartridges. Game being physical are slowly die off to time. Digital downloads are the future. ^^

@Retr0gamedad Matchmaking is still a nightmare. Pros vs. Newbies is a common thing. As long as they get a win, the try hards don't care. It's the newbies and rookies that suffer.

@JamesJose7 I didn't say that but I find it awful weird that alot of Nintendo's own games are getting alot of free DLC updates not long after they are released like Splatoon for Wii U, Splatoon 2 Switch, Mario Tennis Aces, Kirby Star Allies, etc.

@mowerdude because they want to give you more reasons to make you buy the game. You're saying it as if they actually were making big profit for selling SD cards. They only have one NS branded SD card with SanDisk so they're already making a small cut from those sales and I'd argue that a very small percentage of people actually buy those instead of the normal cheaper ones. They are making profit by selling you the game not external storage.

Post launch content updates like this are certainly welcome. Though I never did buy this game. Tennis really isn't my thing.

Nintendo are doing DLC just right at the moment with small free updates alongside payed for expansion packs which I'm appreciative of however I'm pretty much done with Aces and no longer have the game. Same with Splatoon 2, they're just not my kind of games anymore I guess.

@mowerdude : The game is already really small, so that isn't the issue, but I am skipping SNK Collection, for example, for the same reason that you have described, being that they are deliberately releasing "free DLC" after the fact in a disingenuous attempt to deceive the uninitiated into believing that they are adding value to a package. In these circumstances, they should only release the physical version once the game itself is complete. As far as I'm concerned, they can release the digital version whenever they please and update it as they go along, but the cartridge itself should be complete (but fewer and fewer are, outside of ports).

Unfortunately Nintendo are giving themselves a free pass in this regard (there is a little 2GB download warning on the back cover, similar to DOOM's). It was almost enough to make me pass on the game altogether, and they can only push my goodwill so far. I was actually really pleasantly surprised that Super Mario Party was version 1.0 and didn't require any kind of update out of the box (yet people are clamouring for DLC instead of a new entry).

I wouldn't mind software updates and DLC so much if the complete game would eventually be reissued on cartridge (I probably double dip in most situations), but sadly it hasn't happened yet.

I just want complete games on cartridge. I am so sick of "updates" and DLC ("free" or otherwise). The only games that should have any sort of updates are games such as FIFA, and perhaps similar titles that would need to be as current as possible. While I am still glad that we have access to some form of physical version of most major titles, many of them will be problematic to use in the future when we inevitably lose access to all of the content that is only available digitally.

Nice to see Pauline join the spin off roster instead of just stuck in Mario Vs DK games like the past decade.

And hey, more choice for female gamers too. Don't wanna be a Princess or whatever Birdo is? How about a Mayor instead?

@Franklin Um, I think I speak for everyone when I say that we’d all pass on playing as a cool, relatively iconic Mario boss in favour of a plant.

@Angelic_Lapras_King well to be fair while Peach is named a Princess, she actually has complete diplomatic leadership over the Mushroom Kingdom and some surrounding areas. She has all the power of a queen with the title of Princess. Which bests the title of Mayor in terms of political profession. And unlike Pauline, Peach risks her life on a daily basis by going out and trying to solve political problems in other kingdoms, even under the threat of being kidnapped.

This game is still my guilty pleasure! Yes it isnt blessed with tons of single player content, online matchmaking isn't always the best but when you do have a close game, it's the best sports multiplayer out there for me!

@Obito_Sigma if you do get it, know that it is now actually worth the $60. At launch it wasn't worth half of that.

Great game that is getting better and better. They have to keep updating it, but certainly they are in the right direction!

@Silly_G good luck finding ANY game on ANY console nowadays that's complete on cartridge or disc. it's a thing of the past. move on.

Now to add Pauline, Spike, Boom Boom, Birdo, and Pirahna Plant to Super Mario Party! While adding some more minigames for all modes: bring back classics, combine the rhythm minigames with the regular ones; and new maps would be awesome.
I still play Tennis every now and again because of the characters and also to just play it with friends.

Lovin' Pauline's inclusion in Mario Tennis and hopefully in more games to come. But I really wish they'd start adding in WarioWare characters and even Captain Syrup, in Sports, Kart and Party games too, instead of "generic" Mario enemy characters (though Chain Chomp was a pretty awesome addition in Tennis).

@TheFox after thoroughly enjoying Camelot’s N64 instalments of Golf and Tennis, I too found this really underwhelming. Its certainly a regretful purchase.

Cool to see Pauline get more attention after all these years.

@Retr0gamedad I couldn’t agree more. Local play with someone of relatively equivalent skill is easily the best part of this game.

Really happy to see them finally making Pauline playable for once, but it's not going to be enough to get me back into playing this mess of a game.

I like that her bust size is bigger than the other princesses.

@Medic_alert it’s a great game. I don’t even like tennis but the controls and mechanics are great. Online play is good and have put around 100 hours in the game

Whoa, I actually forgot about this game. Other games and the upcoming Smash Bros just kinda been on my mind. I meant to get Mario Tennis awhile back, I should just go ahead and get it.

If they decide to replace Rosalina with Pauline in every new Mario game, I would be so happy. I seriously don't understand this character. Is she supposed to be a galactic Princess Peach?...sorry for the rant. Go Pauline, boo Rosalina.

I like how they put PomPom in Super Mario Party and are now adding BoomBoom to Aces.

@Obito_Sigma Resist it. This game is junk. No amount of characters will fix this games problems. Easily the worst Nintendo game I've played. Even worse than ARMS.

@Benexcelsior why not both? I really hope that a switch version of super mario 3d world will have rosalina AND pauline as extra characters.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get more involved in this game? I bought it and am struggling quite a bit with the control scheme. Not having a lot of fun so far. Thanks.

@patbacknitro18 While true, but again doesnt hurt to have choice. While Peach clearly does stuff outside of being kidnapped, she still has the title of "Princess", not every little or older girl these days want that necessary.

@Silly_G To your comment of releasing a game when it's complete, it seems that many companies including Nintendo are finding it too easy to release a game now and then finish it later. The game that I can think of which does this would be Street Fighter V on PS4 and PC for example. When it released it received terrible reviews for it's limited roster and number of modes available not to mention being pulled from official tournaments that were set to debut it. Now fast forward several years and the game is many times better than it was and actually a very good game to many. I don't see Nintendo taking this road all too often, but with Mario Tennis Aces and even maybe ARMS before it there was a good concept, flawed maybe a little and lacking in content. Mario Tennis Aces is a decent enough game in my opinion, but really could use some more modes. The extra characters are nice, but likely not really convincing that many more people to buy the game. ARMS as interesting in how short of time it was supported with updates. I don't know if this was for lack of sales or lack of interest by Nintendo or it's development staff in continuing on with the game after the final sets of characters and stages were released. Still I enjoy ARMS and it could have been nice to see it get more support. Ultimately I play games like Splatoon 2 more and I am glad to see it continue to receive updates for a while.

If I were to choose a game to get more updates it would be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the form of a few more classic and new battle modes as well as a new and new retro cup to keep things fresh.

@mowerdude While it's a possible way to get around the white bar, considering Mario Tennis Aces is only 2GB I don't think file size has anything with why they're releasing content over time, most of which is actually on the cartridge itself at launch and just time gated.

how about a new co-op challenge for the holidays? that would be nice seeing as the last one expired almost two months ago.

I'm so glad Pauline is getting her due airtime now. One of my favorite characters from the Mario canon.
