A launch trailer has been released for The Unlikely Legend Of Rusty Pup, showcasing elements of its gameplay and a fantastic level of graphical detail.
We've been following the story of Rusty Pup for some time now here on Nintendo Life; from its initial Wii U reveal back in 2013, a visit to game developer Chris Seavor's home office to learn more about the project, and then on to the eventual 'switch' from Wii U to Nintendo's latest system, we've enjoyed seeing the game truly take shape over the last handful of years.
In case you didn't know, Rusty Pup comes from the original creator of Conker's Bad Fur Day and tells the story of a dog that thinks it's a toy - or is it a toy that thinks it's a dog? Either way, the whole thing looks beautifully intricate as you can see in the new trailer above.
This month sees the game's launch on Steam, with the Switch version headed our way in the fullness of time. We reached out to Chris and he said the Switch edition "will be coming for sure" but it's not as easy as flicking a (no pun intended) switch due to the game's powerful bespoke engine.
Update: Chris has also told us that the proposed 3DS version has been scrapped. According to the developer, the console's display resolution is way too small. He also points out that the game won't be coming to smartphones for a similar reason - a large display is needed to fully exploit the game's mechanics.
If you like what you see, developer Gory Detail has also shared an extended look at the game. You can check that out below.

So let me get this straight--
the creator of Conker's Bad Fur Day created a point-and-click adventure that's also somewhat of a cinematic platformer that's a sendup of the Oddworld franchise, with a lot of steampunk, clock-punk and a dash of art deco as seen in the trailer?
Because that's gotta be one of the weirdest sentences I never thought I'd write.
@AlexSora89 You, 5 years from now, applying to be a game tester at Company X:
You: "So yeah, I'd like to work here."
Company X: "That's nice and all, but we have a few questions for you. First off, how often do you dabble in the point-and-click adventure cinematic platformer oddworld-inspired steampunk clock-punk art deco genre?"
@AlexSora89 What's weird is watching that video while your'e thinking Rusty Pup is a port of a free baseball game from the 3DS.
@Blizzia
"Meh, the genre went stale the second they implemented a battle royale mode."
@rjejr
Wait what
Wow, that looks... busy... hope it’s actually easier to follow in practice
I actually just suddenly remembered last week that this game was a thing. I thought it'd be canceled by now since it was coming to Wii U and I hadn't heard of it for a while and here it is now with a launch trailer. I must have missed some news in-between. I didn't even know it was coming to Switch.
I also thought the trailer looked busy. Didn't even know what was going on most of that trailer.
@AlexSora89 I read the title and thought it was a port of this.
@rjejr
Of course! [slaps his own forehead] I totally forgot that game even existed.
The graphics are soooo strong...that you have no idea what you are looking at! In my opinion that's baaaaaadddd! Also it took faaaarrr to long. Is the game really finished now, will it finally get released?!
@AlexSora89 I forgot too, never even downloaded it, until I saw this title "Rusty Pup" and thought that's what this was. Kind of a strange sequel though.
Personally I like it, but I was a huge fan of games like Machinarium. They are pretty to look at and easy to pick up and put down at will when you have a spare few minutes. Will be keeping an eye out for it.
I'm stoked that this is finally coming out!
Been keeping an eye on it since the announcement five years back.

Is this the game done by some ex rare developer? I read the article and answered my own question.😊
@rjejr
Strange indeed! But never as strange as that sequel where the plumber, his brother, the mushroom and the princess explore the dreamscape.
Yeah, I think it's the third Switch game by ex-Rare staff, the other two being Star Ghost and Yooka-Laylee.
(If you count music producers David Wise and Grant Kirkhope, there are a couple more games: Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, DKC Tropical Freeze, Snake Pass, etc.)
@CairiB Yes! I LOVED Machinarium and Botanicula! This game is giving me strong vibes from those games in addition to Stick It To The Man, with that ever-loving Rare-esque character charm. It certainly has my attention!
@AlexSora89 Nobody ever appreciates that Mario Bros. are the Cheech and Chong of the video game world, only with mushrooms instead of marijuana. I short fat plumber who thinks he's going to marry a princess and fights a giant fire breathing turtle over her, that's one serious trip.
@rjejr
"We got right past world 2-4 when the drugs began to take hold."
The art is definitely beautiful, but all of the individual moving pieces and special effects seem like they’d be overwhelming from a gameplay perspective. I can see why the game’s been delayed for so many years when they keep adding in more and more and more and more graphical detail. At some point it’s just too much. Also not a fan of the narration in the trailer, it would’ve been much better without it.
That said, I wish the devs the best of luck and am looking forward to reviews of the Switch 2 version when it arrives in 5 years.
Why is it unlikely that Legend Of Rusty Pup's would have stunning visuals?
Oh, I see, fooled by the use of title case once more. Please, for the fiftieth time, can you somehow highlight the title of the actual game in your headings?
@AlexSora89
It's like an acid trip, and I love it.
that pup looks nervous
Unless they can work some kind of magic, this will run at 5fps with that much graphical fidelity.
@AlexSora89 "You're hired sir!"
@mist I believe it's using pre-rendered sprites, so it should run quickly....
Looks like a steam world game
@Skunkfish
Very cool indeed. Thanks for the info
This looks great
I was interested in this back in the Wii U days, but now that I know what the genre really is (thought it was a traditional platformer) and seeing that everything is way too busy, and this is coming from a huge shmup fan, I'll pass.
@Blizzia
One sentence I'll never hear. Well, I just wrote a sentence I never thought I would type, so even stevens I guess.
@aznable
Do you mean a trip that involves actual acid?
Or - shameless plug here - is it a faithful replica that replaces acid with lava?
@AlexSora89 Never say never xD
@Blizzia
Meh, most contracts I'm carrying out are usually one-day jobs.
... this makes me sound like a gangster, doesn't it.
@AlexSora89 Kinda... I think.
Incase I end up named on one of those contracts of yours, gimme a heads up in advance, please
@Blizzia
That's an offah I can't refuse, capiche?
Please don't be prejudiced against me and other ItaliansThing is, the job market is still messed up here (and if you look up Italian work politics from 2008 to this day, you can see why). I'm in the hands of leasing companies, and all I can land each time is a contract for individual days. The result is usually me being called to help unload trucks and my contract expiring a few hours later in the morning. That's life for me now, I guess.
Job interviews rarely, if ever, go through - hence the impossibility of me being hired each and every time. I'd also love to be a writer for Nintendo gaming sites (wink wink, nudge nudge) but, alas, that looks even less likely (I'm afraid the NL staff is already full enough as-is).
