As you've probably already figured out from this article's title, Dark Souls: Remastered launches on Nintendo Switch today. To celebrate, Nintendo has released a brand new launch trailer to drum up the hype and get you in the mood for multiple, grizzly deaths.
Yes, it's finally time for Switch owners to embark on their pilgrimage to the cursed land of Lordran, taking up the mantle of the Chosen Undead and dying a whole lot in the process. If you've never experienced the game, or love the sound of being able to take it on the go, the Switch version is certainly a great way to play. Here's just a snippet of what we had to say in our full review:
"While we’ve had to wait a little longer than those playing on PS4 and Xbox One, the wait has been more than worth it. Dark Souls: Remastered is a faithful remaster of a touchstone in video game design that improves overall performance while preserving all of the character traits that made the original such a memorable experience. While it’s no less forgiving - and its menus are a little fiddly - this slick Nintendo Switch iteration offers the only way to experience Lordran’s ultra-challenging odyssey in true handheld form. Praise the Sun, indeed."

Its just a little to late for me. I may well get it at some point but I just replayed it again on PS4, could not wait. So I've had my fill, for the next 12 months anyway!
I'm not sure I want this game having played the demo. But we'll done for pricing it at a reason able level for a n older remastered game, on Amazon at least.
Others take note.
Disgaea 1 complete, for example, was on my toget list. But not while it's at a silly price.
Started today at 00:01. To have a game like Dark Souls on a handeled device is a god send.
Just patch the audio and I’ll have no complaints.
Just waiting for that audio patch. Worried it won't actually be fixed though
@KingdomHeartsFan
It’s heavily compressed. Not much of an issue when playing on Switch speaker but as soon as you insert some headphones, you’re going to notice it.

I'm definitely tempted. I literally just finished Octopath and now need a new "main game". I can't help but feel a bit sad that we're getting into holiday season and there isn't a big 1st party title to get excited about, from a single player main game point of view. I'll get SSBU, and I have Party - but they're reasonably limited for a single player experience.
So yea, I think this is a possibility - or, I deliberately put off Wolfenstein, LA Noire and Elder Scrolls for this "barren period" (as we've all known about this quiet period for some time now) - but I need a sale/discount to commit... hopefully they'll do something for Halloween, but otherwise there's Black Friday.
The game is good
I've never played this and have been waiting patiently since preordering in March.
Those bosses look terrifying but holy moley I'm excited to play this later today!
You should mention the many sound dropouts and errors that have been made for porting on Switch, to fit everything on a 4 GB card. Google it before you buy.
Bought it yesterday. Digital. Don't care about the sound. It's fine. Played an hour in handheld before work and everything was fun for me (even though I suck at it). Can't wait to get it on the big screen this weekend.
Disclosure: First time I have ever played the game.
Still not sure about this, but I was the same about Bayonetta, not sure, got it for switch then played it to death
Waiting for audio patch.
@Lando_
Are serious when you say that the cartridge is only 4Gb ? o_O
This is really insane because the "normal" size of the game is pretty light (7.5Gb), they could make the game fit on a 8Gb without any 22kHz downsampled SFX/Music... :/
How difficult is this game? I like to complete games that I buy and I’ve heard it’s very difficult. How does it compare to BOTW for example? (Which if I’m being honest I found a little too easy). How long is an average play through? Cheers
The compressed audio issue detracts from the overall experience of the game for me. The fantastic soundtrack of this game deserves better. I'll wait for a patch before I buy it again. I'm in no rush to buy again either though as from 26th October all bets are off 😏
I am getting this right after I beat Ys 8. My backlog is almost finished. Be a completist and beat a game before you move on. Otherwise, you will just move on and miss a good game. I heard so many great things about this game and it is my next purchase. Starlink can wait and so can Pokemon.
I mean, I get it. They saved some extra money with it but, at least give us a digital patch so the lossless files are available.
The sound is just pure rubbish.
@Bevinator
It’s harder than anything in BoTW except Master difficulty maybe.
But it’s really not hard once you get used to the environment and learn enemy and boss attack patterns. Celeste is a much harder game for the matter.
@River3636
It's fantastic, seriously one of the best games of all time. Looking forward to seeing you online!
@Denoloco thanks, I might put it on the Christmas list
@Denoloco
Hi. Just played this game for about an hour and was wondering what the issue with the sound is as I've not heard any problems yet?
Does it crop up later? Would love to find out, cheers
@Woosh193
The sound is immensely compressed to the point you can distinguish even YouTube recorded footage between Switch and PC. They did it so the game can fit on a 4GB cartridge, further reducing manufacture costs. It’s not the worst thing in the world, but it’s noticable, especially using better headphones.
@Denoloco
Will have to check it out. Thanks.
@Bevinator Imagine a whole game where all bokoblins are replaced by Silver Lynels and boss battles are 4 Silver Lynels in a closed room. That's basically Dark Souls, so if BotW was easy you'll probably do fine
@Lando_ @Cobalt even on a 4GB card it should fit. The game is only 2.4GB. They didn't need another gig and a half for audio. This is just Bamco weirdness that isn't even related to card size.
Virtuous games did the port so it's on them
I’ll have to make sure that I’ve got plenty of ancient arrows on me then lol @NEStalgia
I own this game on PC (sucks balls), Xbox360, PS3, and PS4. I will most definitely be buying this when I get home tonight along with a stop at GameStop for the Amiibo... while this might be the second weakest version (at least right now - they'll improve it with updates) the ability to play this on long flights to China with my girl is the reason this might be the best version, period. I can live with glitchy sound and running at 30fps... the Kotaku review suggests the lack of faster/smoother frame rate makes the game feel more like the original PS3 version... so yeah it's a feature not a bug!
Plus, it'll be nice to get invaded again and/or summon people... I played through it on PS3 recently on my Game+++++ character and it was a lonely of a journey with no help or even a random, fun invader or two along the way.
@Woosh193 Other reviews have mentioned there are problems with the sound dropping out. Neversoft is the issue and I expect they'll patch it at some point soon.
@River3636 have the same here. Will finish Y’s 8 first (almost starting chapter 6). Monster Hunter will be my “other” game as there is no real ending to that. But Diablo 3 is a day one also so not sure if DS is gonna fit in the timeline....but i really want it.
Edit. Just bought it digitally. What is gaming without a backlog anyways.
Can't wait , Amazon delivered it today. Still working but when I'm done later tonight jumping in right away .
All this talk about the sound... i’ve Got my fingers crossed that we get a fix for the backwards A and B buttons. ...I’m accustomed to the standard Switch layout. Is it really so hard to give us an option to swap the A & B?
@Woosh193
The sound quality in general isn't very good, BUT it isn't unbearable like some of these guys have said. They weren't going to get the game anyway and needed a reason to tell others why they're wrong for buying it. I own Dark Souls: Prepare to Die edition on Steam and can notice the difference, especially when NPCs talk, but by no means does it ruin the entire game and I'm fairly certain we'll get a patch/optional audio download soon.
To newcomers, I recommend reading a brief spoiler free guide so you know what certain stats do/etc. I wouldn't recommend a full walkthrough unless you're really having trouble, because your first playthrough of this game is going to mysterious and magical.
Bought it during lunch today and can't express how awesome it is to have Dark Souls on a handheld, definitely worth it for the tradeoff of 30fps instead of 60. I already bought the PC version of Remastered earlier this year but still had to have the Switch version (also, the PC version is so rampant with cheaters and hackers and no punishments for them that I gave up).
@Dalarrun
Thanks for that. Cheers.
@SlimeKnight
My favorite Soulsborne game is Bloodborne, and that game is 30 FPS with more dips than DS on Switch. Granted it's a much more graphically advanced game, but 30 FPS has always been the norm for Soulsborne games imo. DS2 is the only Souls game I've played that was 60 FPS on my first playthrough (played the scholar of the first sin edition), and that's arguably the worst game in the series. It's so cool to play a Souls game wherever I want!
@ed5275 in the same boat here. Not played yet though as I am currently working through hollow Knight and dead cells.
My pile of shame is pretty large now lol.
@ICISAZEL Almost beat Hollow Knight...then The Messenger came out. Was all into that and then Guacamelee came out. Was all into that...now Dark Souls is out. LET ME LIVE E-SHOP!!!
I put 4 hours in today. Love it. This is the kind of core game I need on my switch.
Picked it up on my way home from work. Haven't had a chance to play it yet. I played a little bit of it on the PC a couple of years ago. Looking forward to playing this — being on the Switch makes that easier.
@Dalarrun Me too and I will be loving it like a Zelda game.
@Denoloco the file size is 3.9GB
No way this is on a 4GB cart. It's on a 8GB cart for sure.
@kobashi100
I would not understand the audio compression even further if that’s the case.
Will eventually buy. I liked Demon’s Souls the best (dat Tower of Atria) and have the Prepare to Die version on PC, but I never got into it. Going to try on Switch again.
