During this year’s E3, Nintendo shared information about its upcoming expansion for Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Torna – The Golden Country allows you to venture back in time and experience the fall of the kingdom 500 years prior to the modern events of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. You’ll need to save the day and defend yourself from Malos and his powerful forces as you make use of a refined battle system which allows you to fight as both Blades and their masters, the Drivers.
The Adventure Continues trailer highlights the new Blades, the Battle Challenge Mode, and the story. The all-new prequel story arrives for anyone who has purchased the expansion pass on 14th September. The standalone physical version will be released on 21st September.
Will you be playing this new expansion when it arrives in September? Have you pre-purchased the season pass? Are you going to buy a retail or digital copy? Tell us below.

"Now it's Shulk time!"
Heck yeah dude. This will probably be the best DLC Nintendo will ever release, above Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 2, I absolutely cannot wait. The fact that it's getting a standalone box like New Super Luigi U did is also really sweet.
This is how to do DLC!
God i love xenoblade and monoloth soft so much, i just cannot wait.
Yes everyone, defend yourself from Males... Males is a real bad guy. Malos is pretty bad, too, I guess.
Fu*k! Not males!
I can't defend against those!
@Zach777 Oh no, my hidden agenda has been exposed! Fixed!
I've only notched 20 hours in the main game. I will hold off on this until I've completed XC2's main campaign.
@Liam_Doolan
Nice! Can't lie... I chuckled a little bit inside.
Excited for the expansion!
The physical edition looks neat, sorta wish I didn’t buy the DLC at launch. Ah well.
I want to get this game but I would like to see a resolution bump first. For any of you who own the game, does this affect your enjoyment of it?
@gaby_gabito Absolutely not... The game plays beautifully. 😊
@gaby_gabito Docked is fine, looks really good. Handheld DOES suffer a lot with low resolution, but the art direction more than makes up for it. To me it still looks better than Octopath or Ys VIII due to the scale of everything and the quality of the art itself, even if it's not as clear.
In terms of framerate it can sometimes tank in both docked or handheld. It's more stable than Xenoblade 1's framerate, but not as much as Xenoblade X's.
Hey, so is this included with the dlc pack I bought or is it another pay out?
@YorkshireNed The expansion pass - yes.
Would it be okay for me to buy this just to try out the Xenoblade games?(Standalone release)
Still no graphics update? Curses! Love the game due to the characterization and it looks fine on the television but the portable mode really needs some cleaning up🤔
Good, that means I have until September 13th to finish Octopath. Plenty of time. :3
@gaby_gabito it's hands down my favorite RPG on Switch and second favorite of all time. The game looks beautiful, I dumped 200 hours in easily and the resolution never once bothered me. IDK why so many people take issue with it.
I am so happy I bought the Expansion pass! All the extra's they released so far and now this expansion. Well worth the investment!
@Aozz101x But why can't it also be Rynes time to shine? Still very happy to see both Shulk and Fiora added at least as blades.
Will wait for the physical release as it contains the season pass download code. $10 more seems a fair price to me. Though if I had already bought the season pass, I might just pass.
@gaby_gabito
Over 160 hours, and honestly, in my mind (and to my wife) I have often commented on the blurry and messy graphics. But I can’t put the game down. It’s great. Art style is such that if you do notice the cons like me, the pros still shine through anyway. And the gameplay and story are fantastic.
Short answer: the questionable graphics decisions will not ruin this game for you.
@gaby_gabito if you play a game just for the looks, you might be disappointed! But I played it tons on TV and handheld and enjoyed both a lot. It's a much better handheld-experience die to the lower resolution because it runs smooth. Higher resolution would cause some lags which would ruin it completely.
They choose a comic style for the characters, probably due to the fact that more realistic models would cause a drop in performance. Once you get used to that look it's beautiful (but very tits-focused on the lady characters) game!
@Syrek24 You almost make me want to try playing through it again... Almost. The game was decent but man did it disappoint me. I was so ready for an amazing experience but was left wanting with missing sound bits for simple things such as people running during a cutscene, background noise, bird chatter and so on. So many immersive elements lost. All the cutscenes had me turning the volume up, listening for ANY sort of immersive background noise, but it was just plain old silence most of the time - a major issue that removed focus from the game and story all too often.
I finished the game, and the ending was great, but man did the journey make me want to stop almost hourly. Didn't help that the combat system post-game pretty much forces me to use Rex with <youknowwho> to create optimal team loadouts and combos, along with actually being able to do massive bursts of damage rivaled by nothing else... And the fact that you cannot auto-attack while moving. Why, Monolith, why. It is the most counterintuitive thing ever to just stand still and wait for your character to hit something. Especially in a game as flashy as this. I wish I could run around to a monster's back while launching a skill, transition into the skill motion fluently then transition out while going full circle. Or running to the side while auto-attacking to land that side attack up buff.
It would've been so much better... Oh well. On the fence with Torna, but might get it just for the fact there's a physical edition.
EDIT: Put roughly 105 hours into it. Pretty much beat the story, tried to find some challenging mobs, leveled my team to 85 or so on final boss and beat one hard boss, then quit.
Good for the fans. But the game was a huge disappointment for me. I’m not going to buy any of its dlcs. In my opinion Octopath Traveler is the best RPG on Switch right now.
@Liam_Doolan do you know if the physical release is the full season pass or just torna? Since the physical release is €10 more expensive than the season pass itself and some stores state that owning both xenoblade 2 and torna physical will cross unlock stuff (like with most stand alone dlc)
@darkswabber Torna includes everything from the season pass. It says so in the Announcements menu in the main game.
@JasmineDragon couldn’t find it but thanks anyway.
Torna’s physical release includes a cartridge right? Because that’s the make or break point for me wether I am going to buy it.
Put 330 hours into the game so far. Fabprite game of all time now. Can't wait.
Wow. I am set for the year. I have over 200 hours and it still does not stop.
I have no idea what's going on here, but it all looks pretty exciting!
Not surprised about the pantyshot of the new blade. That's what we can expect now.
@Blizzia That description of the combat is pretty misguided.
1) The reason why they lock you out of autoattacks while moving was to put more stock on the autoattack cancel system, where autoattack combos then using Arts boosted the power. Positioning then becomes pre-planned, then you plant your feet and attack. It becomes less "use this Art immediately" to "time the Art better to get more damage". Moving while autoattacking does not flow well with that. I prefer that than Xenoblade 1 mindless Slit Edge -> Shadow Eye -> Back Slash -> Monado Buster over and over and over again, which Xenoblade 2 punishes by doing the same Blade Combo multiple times completely pointless, so you have to mix up your attacks much more.
2) Postgame is literally whatever you want it to be. Rex actually falls off hard postgame where Coffee with Milk is much less powerful compared to even Mythra, and you can play without a healer. In fact, I created a team of controlling Morag with Zeke and Tora as my party members, and I could beat every Challenge Mode boss easily.
I'm so behind on Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I played a little, tried to get new Blades using crystals and all I got were various "generic" looking ones. I mustn't be doing something right. Anyway I kind of lost interest, especially with the dialogue being so bad. But I've recently wanted to go back in to it. Maybe after I'm done Octopath Traveler.
@Syrek24 "Heck, there’s a Pyra costume in the challenge mode you can get that covers her up haha"
I never even saw this one coming, it's the perfect monetization scheme. Load the game with mostly naked characters characters to sell copies (sex sells!), and then sell DLC clothing kits to cover them up and please the both the activists and people that actually want to play games in front of other people, all for a little less than $200 for all characters to be clothed!
How much spare cash you have? We're buying Bamco controlling shares and directing the DoA team's new game by dusk!
@Syrek24 Oh I wasn't insinuating the XC2 DLC was that kind of profiteering scheme. You just hit upon the next big money scheme of the industry: Clothe the babes DLC pack only $39.99! Now every game can launch as the beach party edition!
Looks AMAZING.
THAT MUSIC ON 1:02 OHHH
Xenoblade2 itself is the best single player game on switch and one of the best games in recent years.
(Also the best soundtrack of all games)
@EvilLucario
It's not really misguided. It doesn't matter what reason they have for locking me out, it's annoying and feels clunky. Why do you need to stand still for it? Assign them to a button, then you have the entire pre-planning system in place still, can use it while moving, and you still time it because you decide when the auto-attack comes.
I just made the combat better on a few seconds, wow. Move to where you want to be, time the button press so that your auto-attack lines up perfectly with where you want it to hit, then time the arts to boost the power when appropriate. Same system, includes movement, takes even more concentration due to having to time auto-attacks as well, and is generally much more enjoyable.
I mean, I don't know what you mean with Rex falling off hard. It's literally been me having him murder everything postgame. Using Coffee with Milk. And Mythra dealing much less damage than C w/ M.
Personally I prefer controlling Nia or Zeke with one of them + Morag in the party. It was just so easy to trivialize things with Rex, which kinda sucks.
@Syrek24
It just felt a bit like something was missing you know. But yeah I can see how it might help a bit going in knowing what expectations to have this time around, and maybe it will be more enjoyable actually knowing how things work rather than spending hours trying to find out.
Regarding its presentation, I'm pretty fond of the anime look and Japanese voice acting is almost always ridiculously good, so I'm really content with that. I liked the story but it still felt a bit too shonen-like for me haha, what with Rex basically being a little regular kid and suddenly he wields the strongest weapon in the universe. Ending was nice though. I loved how they went about that.
You mentioned challenge mode btw. Now, I don't have the expansion pass, because I wanted to make sure I really liked the game before getting it. What exactly is challenge mode, and what does it change? (Oh and dw I don't need Pyra covered up, more like dressed down even more ifyouknowhatimsayin- can never get too much second best girl)
I can agree with most of your sentiments, really. It is a gorgeous game, and it has a really compelling universe and heck, with a few more sound effects, it would've been so incredibly immersive I might just have lost myself in it. I also love what I've read about the DLC, they seem to really be considering what to add, and think deeply about the content they decide on.
Finally, I have two questions:
I went in trying to challenge myself as much as possible, but the game ended up still being too easy. Does Challenge Mode and/or Bringer of Chaos difficulty make things a LOT harder? Have you tried these? I'd love any feedback.
And secondly: Who is your favorite blade?
Personally, my favorite blade is Yaegiri (Zenobia is her localized name) - I'm a massive fan of Asian deities, berserkers and wind-based characters. She is incredibly cool and I've often found myself doing combos only using her just because it feels so cool. I also played using her mostly in a zero-healer setup, requiring me to dip low on hp to enable her damage bonus (which was when enemies really got blown to smithereens), which was fun and different. If I could get her again early on that might make my next run a much better experience, as she's more entertaining to use than most other blades.
@Blizzia Because there are no available buttons for anything. L is for controlling the camera, R is for switching targets, running away, and activating Coffee with Milk. ZL/ZR is used for combos. So they went with the autoattack system they've been using for the past two games.
Coffee with Milk sucks postgame compared to the crap you can pull off with other characters. With Morag and Brighid, I've built an unstoppable evasion tank by controlling her with two common Blades (in different elements as well) with Pentagon Chips, so I stacked Agility up to mad levels so I'm literally untouchable while I draw everyone's aggro.
Nia has the highest Ether stat of the five party members, so you can slap her with Ether Cannons and watch her do some pretty good damage, and as an AI healer you're going to be fine at all times.
Zeke hits like a truck with Greataxes and Ether Cannons with stupid high DPS there. Pretty straightforward.
Tora and Poppi literally speak for themselves as the best party members in the game.
Rex has Mythra who is incredibly fast with building up Specials using Lightspeed Flurry, and the Chapter 7 Blade to really make everyone immortal and literally AFK a few superbosses if you build them right.
In contrast, Coffee with Milk has no passive effects on their Specials and barely any skills compared to Mythra, you can't buff their damage at all, and they only last for a short amount of time. You get party-wide crits, you hold permanent aggro, you have all the Blade Arts, you can do Chain Attacks a bit easier... and that's it. My Chain Attacks will be doing just fine without Coffee with Milk.
What I'm saying is that Coffee with Milk is fine, but there are generally much better options elsewhere.
@Tsurii I could have sworn that was only confirmed for the US version. And since @darkswabber is talking about euros in currency, I would wager that that's not the version he's getting. I'm still curious about this as well.
Can this be found in Japanese anywhere?
@Drakeeper if that’s true than I hope the full season pass is on the cartridge like with dlc disks back during the ps3 days. That would be even better than just torna + a code for all the dlc IMO.
But knowing japanese devs and their treatment of europe I think I’m gonna be screwed. (Europe is probably their biggest market, especially sony and nintendo, that’s why I’m still baffled by the fact they see us as lesser than any other market.)
