To say Nintendo's embracing the indie scene is a vast understatement, and now that support has spread over to Nintendo's homeland with the recent Indie World showcase. Unsurprisingly, it's a video showing off a load of lovely new indie games coming to the Switch in the near future, most of which we've heard of before, but they're definitely new to Japan, we promise:
- Celeste
- Overcooked: Special Edition
- The Flame in the Flood
- RORORORO (Death Squared)
- Aegis Defenders
- Stardew Valley
- Gorogoa
- Guns, Gore & Cannoli
- Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2
- Lumines Remastered
- Mineko’s Night Market
- 7 Billion Humans
- Just Shapes and Beats
- PixelJunk Monsters 2
- Dead Cells
- The Escapists 2
- Nippon Marathon
- Bad North
- Minit
- Yooka-Laylee
- Undertale
We think it's wonderful to see so many smaller games make their way to the other side of the world, but what we think doesn't matter all that much, so let us know what you make of all these proceedings in the comments below.

Still waiting on a physical version of Yooka Laylee
Japan just got Celeste. I'm interested to see how well it does there. It's such a good game.
Death Squared looks like it got a bit of a cutesy makeover before going to Japan. Which may or may not be more disturbing, as those robots in cute hats tend to die a lot.
Dead Cells looks like the Castlevania game we want but aren't getting
Cannot wait for Lumines. Happy days.
Mineko’s Night Market looks interesting, might pick that up on PC or Switch soon.
@NewAdvent Some guys just like vampires and whips.
Dead Cells is rogue lite IIRC.
I don't know why but I definitely always assumed these games were already available in Japan! Suppose we do get some good things first after all.
@frabbit @NewAdvent : We miss out on relatively few Japanese exclusives compared to the volume of Western games (especially indie titles) that Japanese players miss out on. I think that's one thing that we take for granted.
I love that I can actually buy western games on my Japanese switch. But what I love even more than that is that I can play ALL of them in English. Even the demos let you choose the language.
@NewAdvent It's far from perfect, but I gauge their performance on how their Top 15 looks like on my Japanese account. The Japanese LOVE Overcooked, Human Fall Flat, and Stardew Valley! They have never left the top 15 (heck, top 10) since they came out. And I remember Guns, Gore, and Cannoli also staying on the list for a while.
In other news, Vs. Super Mario Bros. has finally left the Japanese top 15 last week. But in NA, Vs. SMB is back in the top 5 after slipping a few spots. Other than that, it has never left the top 15 since it came out.
@NewAdvent At no point did I say I wanted it to be called Castlevania. I was just commenting that it looked like a Castlevania game and that was a complement to the game and it's designers.
Excited for Minit and Undertale.
Rather cheeky of them to use PS4 footage of Pixeljunk Monsters there. The PS4 version is a solid 60fps, but the Switch version is a very, very unstable 30fps.
@Trikeboy Other than the fact it's side scrolling and 2D, it looks nothing like Castlevania.

There's some actual footage of the Switch version of PixelJunk Monsters 2 in action. It is playable, but the animation is janky compared to PS4/PC versions, which is especially noticeable when the camera is zoomed in to the micro level. There are also many brief moments of freezing/stuttering, although I don't know if that's normal or not.
@PlywoodStick You can play it for yourself as there's a demo on the eShop (at least there is here in the UK). It's partly in Japanese but it's perfectly playable. The frame rate is abysmal. It really is a mess.
Is lumines an indie? It used to have pretty major sony support.
I am still bitter about virtual console, with many people having convinced me that indies are one of the prime reasons for its death. That said, there definitely are some outstanding indie games on Switch. Stardew Valley, Night in the Woods, Golf Story, and Regalia of Men and Monarchs have all treated me very well.
@Heavyarms55 Eh, there's still a ton of Arcade Archives and SEGA AGES coming. Though I admit I was looking forward to buying a few SNES and GBA games under VC...
@SmaggTheSmug I distinctly wanted GBA and Gamecube games on a modern portable device legally purchased. I don't want to go the emulator route. Sure I could play the originals, but I'm not a kid anymore and my eyes weren't even good when I was a kid... Old, dark, small Game Boy and GBA screens are just hard to tolerate anymore.
Admittedly there are easy HDMI mods for Gamecube now, and I could buy a modded GBA... but those aren't cheap.
Dead Cells looks good but need an NA version. And Shakedown Hawaii is where ?!?!?!?!?!?
@Trikeboy whose not getting Dead Cells?
@frogopus I completely understand and agree. What got me so excited about Virtual Console on the Switch is because it would be the perfect package for my years of gaming. I'd happily rebuy my favorites from across the eras a second or 3rd or even 4th time to have them together on this stellar hybrid system.
I have had bad experiences with emulators in the past - some work well, some are a complicated mess and most require downloading games from sketchy and probably illegal websites. But the temptation is certainly huge. There are plenty of options out there.
I am glad there are indie titles and they are doing well but if I have a #1 disappointment with the Switch, it is that indies were chosen over VC, rather than supported and promoted alongside it.
@frogopus Well, not my words. A lot of people have argued to me that Support of indies and a push toward the Mini/classic consoles is why VC "had" to die.
Unironically excited for switchtale.
@Bunkerneath me too
@frabbit In Japan we are like 200 or 300 games short when comparing to the US/Europe. Most of the indies that are taken for granted in the US/Europe never even come to Japan.
I'm still waiting for Wulverblade (just one among countless other titles) and I will, probably, wait forever.
I hope the Jpaanese audience will enjoy all of these games, there is some really good stuff in there.
Also, I couldn't seem to find any confirmation from Devolver about Minit coming to Switch, so I hope this announcement means it will be out in the west too.
