We don't tend to share too much about Kickstarter projects these days, but when we saw the pitch for Stockholm-based Hi-Bit Studios 198X we felt compelled to share it with you lovely readers. Here's a bit about it from the game bio:
198X is an arcade epic. A coming-of-age story told through multiple games and genres, worlds and characters. Experience the thrill of shooting, driving, jumping, fighting and role-playing – combined with emotional, cinematic storytelling. Welcome to the world of 198X – where a new life is just 1 credit away.
The game is set in Suburbia, just outside the City, sometime in 198X. It follows the journey of Kid, a teenager stuck between the limitations of innocent youth and the obligations of inevitable adulthood. The story unfolds when Kid discovers the local arcade – finding new worlds, and new meaning, in video games. For every visit to the arcade – every game uncovered, every move mastered, every demon defeated – Kid grows stronger. And the lines between game and reality starts to blur…
There are some obvious likenesses to classic video games in the trailer above. Let us know which games you think they most closely resemble. Do you plan to back this ambitious project?

Damn this looks good.
Very promising! Hope this comes to fruition.
Damn, this looks great!!! Kickstarter engaged!
Woah. That was a good trailer. I've never done kickstarters before, but when/if this comes out I'll pick it up day one.
Very ambitious, will keep a close eye on this.
This game looks awesome! Hope all goes well!
I’m interested. Kickstarter tho......
Very interesting and a fine teaser trailer too.
The games mimicked appear to be R Type, Streets of Rage or Final Fight, Outrun, Shinobi, and Final Fantasy.
Kinda vague on the story department, but hey a mock arcade complation with a story, let's see where this goes.
Thumbnail looked like Streets of Rage; I clicked on the article.
@Handsomistic15 Yup, same.
Looks solid but they will dial it back ALOT once it's released.. too ambitious for a kickstarter.
@Agent721 Yeah, those references were awesome!
@Lroy
As soon as I saw those, I was sold. I hope there’s more!!
Great trailer! I want this to succeed! The 80s kid in me has a tear starting in the corner of his eye...
I'd buy this in a heartbeat
I love the feel of this. Hopefully it hits it’s target!
Looks really cool! Some of the guys involved with this are well known in the Swedish video game community, working on classic Swedish video game magazines like Super Play, Level, etc. Tobias Bjarneby, the writer and director of this game, is probably the most well known and respected video game journalist in the country: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tobias_Bjarneby He's also one of the founders of Swedens first museum of video games: Stockholms spelmuseum.
So the people behind this really loves and understands video games, which (hopefully) is a good sign!
@Deadstanley went to comments looking for somebody pointing that out, and it was the first post I saw
Seems interesting.
So essentially Shenmue 1 with only the Arcade included.
Looks excellent. I’m lovin the nindies!
Interest is there, but I need more info.
A nice trailer but i want to see actual gameplay before i even get mildly hyped.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES, BREATHE YESYESYESYESYES, STREETS OF RAGE, SHINOBI 3, ARCADE'S 80'S AWESOME.
I've backed two projects before this came. One was successful, the other didn't go ahead. I will put my money on this one next week and I do hope it will achieve its target because it looks pretty good and may have a good story to it if achieved.
@Deadstanley I was thinking the same, and that game was awesome. This one looks really cool as well.
