Sega's Sonic Mania has now sold over a million units globally, according to Famitsu.
The 2D platformer launched last year on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC, and made up for the fact that the mainline 2017 Sonic title - Sonic Forces - wasn't very good.
Sega's having a second slice of the pie with Sonic Mania Plus, an updated version of the game which launches this summer. It includes two new playable characters in the form of Ray the Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo, and will be released both digitally and physically. A DLC pack will be made available for those who already own the original game, and will cost $4.99 / £3.99 to download.
Sega has also revealed the release date for Sonic Mania Plus. The game will launch on July 17th, and there's a new trailer to go along with this announcement.
Are you impressed by Sonic Mania's commercial performance? Do you think we could see more "classic" games of this type in the future, perhaps even as mainline Sonic instalments? Let us know with a comment.

While I don’t have this game yet as time goes by I’m deffinitely leaning towards buying it, I’ve heard nothing but good things so far
They need to do a fully fledged brand new sonic game in this style.. it would sell another million. Another 3D rendered style with crappy controls and voice acting .. will not.. why Sega keeps trying to push the wrong way i have NO idea
@The_Top_Loader I feel like it is possible to make a genuinely good 3D sonic, but sega just don’t seem to know how
@Eman Maybe Nintendo should make one for them lol or Nintendo should buy Sega and their properties .. would make a great fit to the biggest irony of all time (Nintendo did .. what Sega couldn't)
A DLC pack, which better be free
Update: Nope
A million sales is certainly nothing to scoff at, but I kinda expected this game to had sold at least 2 million copies considering the amount of praise and media coverage the game got. Am I the only one who was thinking this?
And I was one of them.
Will be buying this as soon as it lands physically. Played it at a friends place and couldn’t stop.
Someone can buy my copy. I’m a retro gamer, but was bored within thirty minutes.
Only a million? I thought this would have sold far more then that.
I also would like to know what console it sold the best on.
SEGA take note of this, this is where the money is at! Not lackluster auto pilot Sonic where you make your own OC.
Give the Mania Team a promotion!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZH3SpBujwk
Go Taxman!!!
Is the "Plus" update free? I was curious about the physical edition but it's twice as much
@Jayenkai most people phrase “go” slightly differently in this context - using a few extra letters and 2 words instead of one (the second being “off”) - but it does still mean basically the same as “go”...
1 Million is a nice number but I'm a little surprised this isn't 1 Million on Switch or maybe 2 or 3 Million total. Well received and reviewed plus nostalgia seems like it should have sold a lot more then 1 Million. Still it is a good number and hopefully decent money for the developers
A million seller is a million seller but... I thought this game would have sold that a long time ago, across all platforms. But I hope they're happy.
this game s u c c s
@ImagineerNik
Basing on the leaked PS4 update, there is a V1.04 update that fixes issues and adds stuff like transitions for all levels. A DLC Store will be added as well. So the characters and encore mode you will have to buy separately.
@Eman I agree. And while I enjoy Sonic Mania, I hope it's success isn't some validation to Sega that a 3D Sonic won't work
When it releases physical in August i will pick it up! 😁
Preordered this a second time with no regrets. It’s made me an unstoppable Sonic Maniac. I tried starting a save in Sonic Forces. I respect their past achievements, but Sonic Team just needs to STAWP....And maybe rename the team. I’d love to see more from Sonic Mania’s creators going forward.
I will rebuy the physical copy no matter what even if I had it digitally.
Didn't sonic colors sell 1.85 million units just a few months after it's launch?
I saw a 2011 NL article just a few months after Color's release reporting such sales.
Thought Mania would do so much better with 4 platforms (colors only had 2).
Can somebody tell me what kind of a world we live in, where a man dressed up as a bat gets all of my press?
I'm going to have to buy the physical version now just for the book.
THE EXTRA COSTS MONEY?? Ah God, and it was going so well.
Looks like i'm paying a grand total of £20 for the book and plastic which make the box and cartridge.
Still not sure if I'll buy this, depends on the price.
Two playable characters that I've never heard of isn't really a selling point so hopefully the rumours about them adding Angel Island Zone are correct.
@Mopati The original article didnt have a price until they updated it with the release date
@Bunkerneath Oh okay, I'm sorry.
I understood just after posting it, so I deleted the comment quickly.
Still not quick enough, oops...
$5 for the update is a steal. I'm not sure why people are peeped off by it lol
Not sure if I'll buy the update or not. I already beat the game with the other 3.
Kinda crossed my fingers for the DLC to be free, but hey $5 aint bad for what there is. Although it probably would be better to get it physical.
@Bunkerneath The extras come with the physical edition though? If you're getting that, why worry about the DLC costing $5 for digital?
I have Sonic forces on the Switch - and I actually enjoyed it. Not the best thing in the world but it has its moments.
I bought Mania at launch, and now I'm conflicted: I should only pay 5 for the DLC, but the art book and reversible cover in the new physical version is really tempting me to double dip
Very much deserved. Have it downloaded on my Switch. I think Sonic 2 is still my favorite for originality's sake, but this is an extremely close second. Just too dang fun.
@Bunkerneath Why should the DLC be free?
@Bunkerneath 2 new characters, newly remixed zones, all zones now have transitions into the next ones, boss battles have been tweaked, there is supposedly at least one brand new boss battle, competition mode is now up to 4 players.
This should be free? $5 sounds like a sweet spot to me.
That's actually a pretty sweet price! I was fearing the DLC would be at the £15 mark, but I think I'll pick that up......along with the physical edition. XD
@The_Top_Loader I though Nintendo helped during the development of Lost World. It wasn't a great game.
@Agramonte Is it worth $15?
This is one game I am embarrassed to say I don't have in my library yet. I have defended Sonic's honor for years yet right when a truly great Sonic game comes out, I don't get it!
I was worried original owners would be screwed with an excessive update price. But £ 3.99? Sensible, fair, and no doubt they're gonna have an extra £4000000 in sales of the DLC in pretty sharp order. Well done Sega!
I'm so happy I was able to preorder this game back during the original launch and still get the Collector's Edition for Switch. I love the Mega Drive/Genesis Sonic statue and the Genesis cartridge that holds the golden ring collectible! It was a really nice package, even down to the packaging. Glad I didn't hold off on getting it so I could get the collector's box, and really happy this new content will be rather cheap for those of us who already own the game!
@Devlind I think so... I got it for $19
My first thought was: how will they know i already bought the game when ordering the PHYSICAL plus version. Lol offcourse its only for the digital version.
Very impressed! I am hoping they do something similar with the Streets of Rage series.
@Devlind No, Nintendo didn't have any involvement. It was just exclusive to Wii U for so many years before being ported to Switch.
@liljmoore There are a good chunk of PC Players still boycotting Mania because of it using Denuvo, an anti-piracy measure which is ineffective and can do damage to a computer.
Can't wait for this. Got Sonic Mania on my Xbox One. Gonna buy Plus for the Switch.
Easily the best Sonic game since the Megadrive and one of my favourite games of the last few years. Hopefully we can get a sequel at some point whilst Sega fumbles around wondering how to make a great 3D game
Is there a (legitimate) reason this isn't on 3DS? :'-(
And well deserved those sales are; this the best Sonic game in years and arguably even the best ever.
@ga3tr0n the 3dsis kind of a dead platform atthis point, with Nintendo and Atlus being the only 2 companies still supporting it.
@ImagineerNik 10 bucks more.
@MartyFlanMJFan I think people are naturally apprehensive but this could eventually open the floodgates
@TheTetrisGuy refer to article title
@Bunkerneath you feel you're entitled to a quite large dlc for free for this great, full, and complete game for no apparent reason? You were already a lost case.
@MrGlubGlub £15 more. Twice as much
Where are those good old days when games had free DLCs. £4 for two characters if you jump early and bought digital. If not for these people (including myself) they would never earn so much money and support a game with new “content”. At least we who had a game digitally from day one should get some free stuff.. No chance I’ll throw more money in Sonic Mania.
Edit: and for price difference for physical and digital.. ok, it’s almost double the price but if you buy physical, you can sell your copy and get your half back..
It’ll be interesting to see how much the sales totals increase by, following the hard package launch.
I had the original package ordered, but cancelled it when I realized it did not come with an actual cartridge. Now I’m back in and I bet I’m not the only one.
@Bunkerneath
Why do they owe you free DLC?
Seriously though, is it just two characters? Sorry but for $5 I would expect something else. Even if the two characters fought different versions of the bosses or had a new level. That'd justify it for me.
WAIT, I thought the expansion was free for those of us who already bought the game??? I mean, I swear they said that originally. It isn't that I feel entitled to free content, but I could have sworn that was the original deal.
@Heavyarms55 Nope, they mentioned in the announcement for Mania Plus that existing owners would have the opportunity to purchase the content.
@Platinumhobo From my previous comment:
“2 new characters, newly remixed zones, all zones now have transitions into the next ones, boss battles have been tweaked, there is supposedly at least one brand new boss battle, competition mode is now up to 4 players.”
Lots of stuff.
The DLC is paid? You're taking the proverbial, Sega.
Free would have been nice, but $5 is fair. What I do wish they would done though, is make a hi-res, digital equivalent of the 32-page art book, and reversible Genesis/Mega Drive cover art, for viewing on your Switch, for those who purchase the $4.99 DLC pack.
I have a problem with this, and it bugs me that it takes a random person like me to think of good ideas, that should be obvious to the companies/developer.
Capcom digitized 250+ pages of artworks (in hi-res) from out of print artbooks, and included it with Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, for viewing on the Switch. Why couldn't Sega do this for those buying the DLC?
@Devlind i mean a game developed by just nintendo.. not just "helped"
Looks like a fun game; might get it this weekend.
Wow charging early adopters for the extra content - those asking why should dlc be free - it isn’t really DLC - they added more content to a physical version - early adopters are the ones loyal to Sega - obviously they would be milked
Shame really as a few companies have moved away from milking early adopters and instead reward them - but this is Sega.
@imgrowinglegs Thank you, idk how i missed that. Now that is worth $5.
