Though Shantae: Half-Genie Hero was an excellent game at launch, WayForward has since been working tirelessly on new modes and expansions featuring different characters and playstyles. It’s been a great run so far, though there’s been one major update left that was included as a stretch goal in the initial Kickstarter campaign. Fortunately, fans of the game won’t have long to wait, as WayForward has just shared new details about the forthcoming update.
Dubbed “Costume Mode”, this new mode will feature three ‘what if?’ scenarios that feature new moves, storylines, voices, and artwork. Ninja Mode will see Shantae taking on the role of a shinobi who can wall jump, throw kunais, and more, but she won’t have any of her dancing transformations. Beach Mode will see Shantae searching for the perfect beach, with the major change this time around being that she’ll take burn damage if she’s out in the sun too long. Players will need to jump into water or collect sunscreen to keep Shantae cool. Police Mode will see Shantae crossing over with Mighty Switch Force! and chasing down Space Hooligans, armed with a pellet gun and the Switch Up mechanic from the Mighty Switch Force! games.
Download codes are expected to go out to backers in the next few weeks, and for those of you that bought the game afterwards, it hopefully won’t be too long of a wait before the DLC goes live.

I'm tempted to buy this game now with the physical release. I wonder if the costumes also mean new levels?
Maybe I'll just download the GBC version and give it a whirl first.
in the game, i just make her dance. she's adorable.
@Magrane Doesn't sound like it, I think the stages are just remixed with new collectables and obstacles.
I gotta preorder the physical version soon because I just love giving Wayforward my money.
All over the physical cart of this
Mighty Switch force DLC is an instabuy. As a Shinobi fan I'm curious about the kunoichi dlc.
I still haven't bought the base game yet. I've actually never played a Shantae game. I hear Pirate's Curse is the way to go, but I'm not a big fan of all the pixel indie games; I vastly prefer this Rayman Legends-esque, hand-drawn art style. Is this game still a good one to start with?
Er...yeah, I like this game since it was a fun game to play through and through, but the Friends to the End DLC made me feel ill. Lack of health upgrades (let alone any upgrades), lack of recovery items...I felt like Wayforward went out to lunch with that campaign. This one looks intriguing, but I'm hoping to see health upgrades in there and the absence of that would be an automatic pass for me.
No Health Upgrades = No Buy
@Not_Soos Half-Genie Hero is a decent place to start in the series, but Pirate's Curse is the better game at the end of the day. Sure, HGH's art style is better than the 16-bit art style of Pirate's Curse, but sometimes: Looks aren't everything.
@Ryu_Niiyama It seems like you're under the impression that they're somehow separate. These aren't separate DLC. The three different costumes are all part of a single DLC pack called Costume Mode.
@StephenYap3 I had some issues with Friends, but that was mostly because it just remixed the same levels I'd played many times. I wanted more original levels. But also.. I don't understand your complaint about the health upgrades. Why would that be a thing anyone would care about? I don't see how health upgrades would make the game better.
@Magrane The first game isn't that good all things considered... It's charming, but Shantae walks around really slow, enemies spawn in front of you giving you no time to dodge them, the hair whip has very short range, many enemies need like 5 hits to go down (and they respawn quickly), save points are sparse and you need to grind a lot of gems to afford upgrades. I got to the 4th dungeon and gave up.
I'm really torn now between getting the physical release (which is pretty expensive all things considered) or just installing the Steam version I had for 2 years and buying the DLC for it there. I recently finished Risky's Revenge and I don't know if I should try Magic Mode first or go to Pirate's Curse... But first, Monkey Island
@Not_Soos It depends on whether you prefer a traditional Metroidvania experience (the first 3 Shantae games) or an explicit level system that lets you explore new areas to aquire extra power-ups and other goodies upon replaying the levels with new powers that you receive in later levels ("Half-Genie Hero").
@Deltath I got that from the article. However that doesn't mean I'll play with all of the costumes unless forced. that was my point in my original comment. I'm buying the dlc because of mighty switch force and I'm curious about the kunoichi costume. Which was I said earlier.
Cool
@SanderEvers I never realized how much I want this until now. It makes so much sense!
@Magrane GBC version is another game.
Anyway it seems, reading the article, that those costumes do come with new levels. Great. Great price, extras and a lot of content. Already preordered.
Is this coming to the eshop in the states? It’s the only way I’ll double dip, if it is... with all the DLC.
Longtime visitors know my love for Shantae is legendary. They also know I'm going to be all over this. <3
All together now... "WHERE'S MY SHANTAE?!"
Haven't bought any of the DLC yet but this one seems interesting. Mighty Switch Force is a fun series and I'm thinking this might be the closest we get to a new MSF game for a while.
Nice! The more we have, the more happy we are!
I am glad I waited for the physical release. I am looking forward to April 24th
Shantae is so adorable...
Marry me, Shantae!!!
Hmm. Sounds like some decent DLC to add replayability. I need to get the physical version preordered.
@Magrane The GBC is the very first game, and a different one entirely. I never played it, but I can tell you Pirates Curse and Half Genie Hero rocks. I may pick up the GBC debut on 3DS eventually.
@Not_Soos it's a great game. visually, it's vibrant with color and animation. the music is top notch and very catchy... veey cute how Shantae dances (bobs) to the music.
@Deltath I don't mind a challenge here and there in any game I play, but the problem with Friends to the End is that you're absurdly handicapped for no reason at all. Sure, Pirate Queen's Quest had only a handful of health upgrades compared to the main campaign, but at least it had other features to help make up for those missing health upgrades. There's nothing like it in Friends to the End as you're basically left with just those three hearts before you go Game Over, not to mention that their health meter is shared between the three characters. The three-heart challenges in the Zelda series had more reasons of existing than Friends to the End had.
Sounds like it's about time for a titillating dressing room mode 🐙🐙🐙
@StephenYap3 I guess I felt like with the DLC being so short, a little challenge was welcome. Really only that last level was tough anyway. I liked it.
@Deltath To be honest, the last three levels were the only thing I liked about Friends to the End. Not to say I hated Friends to the End, but I expect more, on top of the lack of health upgrades.
I'm just ready for less DLC and more Shantae 5.
@Magrane I would not really suggest playing the gbc game as a first Shantae game it's pretty slow and dated, if you can I would highly suggest Pirates Curse, but if not you can probably easily find Risky's Revenge.
These games are fine, I just hate how unnecessarily sexualized they are.
I'm with JayJ's sentiment. It kinda detracts from the game.
