During the last Nintendo Direct, Nintendo dropped the rather surprising announcement that Splatoon 2 would be receiving a new single player expansion. Details have been a bit thin on the ground, but it promises 80 new stages and a much darker tone; hopefully adding a hearty amount of content to the game’s already great single player campaign. IGN recently got to sit down with Hisashi Nogami—the producer of Splatoon 2—to talk about the upcoming expansion, and it sounds like the team has been quite ambitious with this new content.
Nogami begins by explaining how the 80 stages will have varying mission objectives; while the initial campaign was a simple A to B affair, the new campaign will task you with new kinds of challenges that encourage different kinds of play. Along with this, you’ll be given greater freedom over the kind of loadouts you can choose for each level, with the goal being to expose players to a wider variety of weapons that they maybe haven’t tried out in multiplayer yet.
What do you think? Will you be getting the Octo Expansion? What kind of features would you like to see in it? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Just the thing to pull me back in. I don't want d find the default story mode that. Feel a bit restrictive. Loved it though.
Loved the sp, just wish it had been longer, and allowed for more freedom. Looks like I get my wish. Now to get a new copy of the game. Lost all my games a month ago in a break in.
I already pre-purchased it. I am looking forward to finally playing as an Octoling.
Despite having Splatoon 2 for ages, have only just recently played the single player mode and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to more stages as it did feel a bit short.
I appreciate the attempt to make us try new weapons and specials. Every mode encourages variety. I fell in love with a lot of weapons I'd never try if I hadn't played with them in Salmon Run. And by completing the Story Mode with the one I had more difficulty (Charger), I not only got a cool skin for the standard charger but felt a lot more safe with it in multiplayer. That's good game design
@PhilKenSebben
My condolences.
@Anti-Matter I think more companies are doing this often now. Square Enix re-released FFXV and I'm sure somewhere down the line we will get a Splatoon 2 Deluxe Edition with all the DLC. They have no problem releasing the same game as many times as possible.
Definitely getting this, love Splatoon 2. I did keep cursing Sheldon for his requests in the final section though, so the freedom to pick weapons will be a nice addition.
Looks like GameXplain was pretty dead-on with their analysis.
Now when can we expect Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to get the Mission Mode treatment? Would happily fork out some money for that as well as new characters and tracks. Or better yet, as a free incentive for paying for Nintendo Switch Online. Please get on it, Nintendo!
Will I be getting it? I already pre-ordered it! I love that Nintendo is choosing the DLC route, rather than releasing an entirely "new" game every year at full price like certain other popular shooter series that shall remain un-named.
I basically bought the €60 game just for the single player, because I absolutely love the movement mechanics and style of the world. So happy we're getting 80 extra levels (for way less €). Hope they're as big as all the other missions, it would be a ton of content.
Fun fact: I played the entire single player without realising you could upgrade your weapons. Got stuck on the final boss, it felt a little unfair, then immediately (easily) beat him after upgrading the weapons haha.
@Not_Soos Oh man I would kill for a mission mode in Mario Kart 8. With boss battles and everything.
@citizenerased Did you play in in a language you can't read? It pretty blatantly reminds you several times that you can do that? lol
Well up for it!
@citizenerased Yeah, boss battles would be a must! They could even reuse bosses from Odyssey, like how Mario Kart DS' bosses were all from SM64 DS. Imagine if there also was 2-player co-op; it would be perfect for the split Joy Con configuration.
@Heavyarms55
I think it's only mentioned it at the start of the campaign. In any case I was confused because you can buy/upgrade weapons separately for multiplayer, but this required playing the multiplayer a bunch. So when I realised I could upgrade it still took me a while to find out exactly where/how.
@Anti-Matter Re-releasing games again as "complete" or "game of the year" editions is pretty common now on "big" platforms. I don't know about Nintendo though and how prevalent DLCs upon DLCs are there. But Breath of the Wild Complete (with all the DLCs and updates on cart) wouldn't go amiss later this year. Or Fire Emblem Warriors with everything they're releasing for it now.
The Sims have DLCs for DLCs nowadays.
But the idea is to hit the reseller market. They don't prohibit reselling as that's a bad PR move (as Microsoft has shown everyone with the launch of Xbox One), but they want to soft-lock customers with stuff like DLC. I know that with Ballad of Champions purchased I'm in no hurry to resell my copy of BotW.
@NotAceAttorney You mean the FFXV (in)complete Edition? The one that just came out, but is still getting new content? That was absolutely pointless lol.
Pre ordered, Pre Excited, Pre Cu...... cause I love Splatoon
@Octane I'm not getting it. Waiting for the inevitable "Imperial Edition" or "Chosen King Edition". haha
The only game at the moment that I really want but still do not have. But really can't afford it now so it'll have to wait. Just got Mario Kart this month so it's not like I've got nothing to do : )
Hear so many good things about Splatoon, plus it would be awesome for my 7 year old nephew too.
I hope they make the DLC interesting for completionists. When you finish the DLC 100%, you don't get any reward at all which is a shame. Aside from that, looking forward to this.
@SanderEvers
Exactly.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe came with All DLCs + New contents for Switch Exclusive.
@PhilKenSebben Damn that sucks, sorry to hear about the break-in. I hope you didn't lose too much stuff.
I'm pretty sure this was Game Informer who interviewed them, because I remember this from their interview, as well as another "Burning Questions" interview about Splatoon with the same guy.
Eh, I could be wrong and they both interviewed him.
Pre ordered and working through the single player campaign currently.
Can't wait to get expansion. But please don't do the whole gotta complete it with every weapon thing it's so dull.
Over 80 stages nice, but it does mean the thought of me finishing it in a couple of days and being able to play as a octling in 2 days is now ruined lol. I just play as a squid and play as a octling when i finish it which with the online distraction could be about a month lol. It sounds well worth the price now can't wait!.
I can't wait for this! I still haven't finished the regular campaign myself, but I did want this game to have more single player content!
@PhilKenSebben Sorry to hear about that. Beats me how people can have so little respect for other people.
I'm really hoping for a standalone physical release a la Luigi U.
I know I'm probably delusional, but... plz Nintendo?
Barely touched the current single player campaign but hearing this announcement i jumped back to it. Really enjoying it so far. Might bee tempted by this dlc.
Will pre-order it soon. I know a lot of people have been against DLC but coming from the PlayStation/Xbox side of things I've never had a problem with DLC done right. This is a case of a developer handling it the way it should be, seems like a very big expansion and if it's on the same level as the single player in the base release, it'll be more than worth the $20.
I love all the support this game is getting
@astrofan1993 Ive played loads of splatoon 2, but didnt have a wii u. Are we as players not octolings?
Can't wait for the single player expansion. I will say that the octoling boy looks terrible. It looks like an afterthought much like the inkling boy in splatoon 1. It's very obvious which design got more attention.
@Azzdama Nope. In the first Splatoon, you could only play as an Inkling. I was hoping there would be DLC for the first game where you could play as an Octoling, but sadly, that never came to fruition.
But now, with the release of this expansion for Splatoon 2, my dream is realized. In a few short months, I will finally be able to play as an Octoling.
Ah okay, I'm gonna have to improve my knowledge of splatoon lore so are the octolings and inklings different species?
