Last week had a few high profile releases across various systems, which means the UK charts are a little more interesting than normal. Well, aside from Destiny 2 staying in top spot.
The best new arrival is actually NBA 2K18 in second place, but that doesn't include Switch sales as the game is eShop-only so far on Nintendo's system; a look at the UK eShop charts shows it in a modest 10th place, however.
The most notable new arrival from a Nintendo perspective is 3DS title Metroid: Samus Returns, which secured 8th place in the all-format chart. Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition was another new arrival on Switch, and it grabbed 11th place.
After that we have four evergreen Switch titles continuing solid momentum. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe climbed four spots to secure 12th place, while Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was close behind in 14th. Next up was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (primarily the Switch version) in 18th place, and then Splatoon 2 in 27th.
Finally we have two more 3DS titles near the bottom - Mario Kart 7 is in 35th place, while Monster Hunter Stories has tumbled rapidly to end up in 37th.
Plenty of Nintendo and system exclusive games in the top 40, then, and it'll be interesting to see how Metroid: Samus Returns performs in other territories.

Glad this game has legs, especially in the U.K., which isn't particularly Nintendo-friendly when compared to other regions.
Hey, pretty good. Don't see it staying in the charts next week though.
Can't wait to get Samus Returns!
It deserved to place higher, even if it is a remake instead of a new game. I did my bit to try and help this game succeed by buying the Legacy Edition.
Individual Formats
All Formats
There's no reason why this site can't print the charts in full. I see other sites do it all the time.
I bought the legacy edition, but I've not had a chance to play it as I've had some weird hand problem all weekend, probably RSI.
8th position for Samus Returns isn't a bad starting but it will drop out the top 10 next week. Those who are going to buy this game likely bought it day one. What will be more important is how this game does in the US, the biggest market for this series.
Bit random, but Just Dance 2016 is currently number one on the Wii U Top20! Wind Waker HD is number two, BOTW at number three.
Been playing Rayman all weekend as wife has found a new show to watch which i'm not interested in, i'm playing as handheld and loving it!
Only a few problems - Loading between levels is slow and lagging quite badly on challenges screen. Also during the level with cake eating was lagged quite abit
Basketball is not a popular sport in UK at all. I expect decent sales of NBA2K in south and eastern Europe and US.
Jesus Mario Kart 7
@MartyFlanMJFan You'll never guess what's #1 on Wii right now!
And the UK VG market is the same old joke, casual fifa, CoD and some other dudebro trash. Yay! it's by far the worst taste in games in the entire planet, well maybe tied with South Korea....
UK charts are some demoralizing for Nintendo games.You guys don't buy anything.
Please sell well. I want more 2D Metroid games.
@dimi
Well, until the physical version releases for Nba 2k18 Switch we won't really have an idea of sales.
I'm buying NBA 2k18 physically, but I may not download the update since the game is playable off the cart. Plus by playing offline I won't have to watch the single player cutscenes, which apparently have audio desyncing issues on all platforms.
I just want to hop in and play some basketball, and be able to pass a joycon at work and play MP. K don't care about all the other modes and customizations and online
Awright! Go, Samus, go!
That's not a good result for Metroid. Some big games ahead of it but behind a Dishonoured game and an NBA game isn't great.
@TrumpsHand
Yeah.
I feel the same way about some of UK gamer mindset.
They are suck in gaming taste.
They are blinded by those stupid nsfw games and lame sport ever.
Can they at least spend their time to be Kiddie for a moment, appreciate the Cute and Innocent things with no harm meaning ?
I mean, come on !
@LUIGITORNADO
Basically UK Chart is always Suck and Lame.
I feel Ashamed to see such a gamer like that.
The gamer with No Sense of Kid Friendly at all.
@Anti-Matter um where not all like that i'm a uk gamer :/ i brought it digital though. i switched to digital games this gen unless i get a collectors edition, the metriod one i was to slow and it sold out .
Oh look, people moaning about the UK charts. Presumably posting from countries with games charts dominated by Nintendo, artsy games and obscurities....
@electrolite77 also it only came out last Friday tbh.
People are real quick to judge.
Price is a big factor. PlayStation and Microsoft games are cheaper than Nintendos. They do better deals and have more frequent sales. Nintendo games are nearly never on sale or do deals.
I got the Legacy Edition which is great, but haven't played the game yet. The morph ball keyring is a disappointment, looking and feeling very cheap. I was hoping for it to be a nice weighty metal. But the rest is great anyway.
I'm gutted we didn't get the reversible cover that the US special edition got, although we shouldn't complain as ours was probably better overall.
@Anti-Matter - If you dislike the UK and the UK gamer so much, why do you bother commenting on a UK article on a UK site.
More trolling from you I see with your kiddie game nonsense. Video games are for all ages and all tastes. If you don't like certain genres, fine, that's up to you, but don't bash people who do like them. And liking adult games doesn't mean not liking softer games either.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
If you own it, and have played it to any extent. You'll know it's about as far from a remake as it's possible to get.
@TrumpsHand @Anti-Matter Italy is basically the same.
Aside from the one-of-a-kind success of the Wii,the only Nintendo consoles I see around are pirated DSes(usually the very first model).
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Surely Metroid only came out on the 15th so this is just the weekend's sale no? And it doesn't include downloads right?
As a UK gamer, shame that Samus Returns isn't higher (it really is a great game) but it really is true that Nintendo does not have a massive high street presence here in the UK or mind share when it comes to gaming. That has been the case since the end of the Wii and DS days.
I do not feel ashamed to be a UK gamer however - just because some games and genres released by the biggest corporations in gaming hit big doesn't mean other games don't sell.
As for stating that genre defines an entire nation, that is ridiculous. It would be like me slating Japan for not buying games that I like.
@Samwise7 Yes, but the same can be said for the other new entries in the charts.
@Randomname19
Oh... I see...
Gosh... Pirated NDS games was ever happened in my country Indonesia during year 2006 - 2013.
@Anti-Matter Different countries will always have differing demographics. I would be interested to see a similar chart for Indonesia. If the chart was Nintendo heavy, would we hear people calling the UK gamer out for going too far the other way? I doubt it. Let people enjoy what they want. This isn't a popularity contest, although I get how it can seem this way sometimes on this website.
@Anti-Matter can you please stop slandering entire countries for their gaming habits because they differ from yours.
the world needs diversity or we would all be in a grey bubble
@Shellcore
Sadly, Indonesia will Never counted as an Important country for gaming. Well maybe counted by Sony or Microsoft but never happened by Nintendo, though Nintendo games still sold quite well in my country Indonesia.
About Indonesian gaming taste, it same and even worse than UK gamers. Just like user TrumpsHand said above.
@8Darky
Um... I feel UK and my country Indonesia has same lame gaming taste. I admit this is soooo embarrassing but that's the truth .
@Anti-Matter don't feel embarrassed. If people find of some value buying something they will do. It's good to have choices of different games
I got the special edition version here in north america. Hoping the numbers are high enough for Nintendo to continue the 2D series....
Very good results for Metroid considering there was a few big games released.
@JaxonH Still there will be annoying bugs....Game releases these days aren't 100% complete
I like the variety of the Switch lineup so far and will be better yet with Doom and this new horror game just announced http://snip.ly/l2od8
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You keep dogging Samus Returns for being a remake. The reviews are quick to clarify that this game is so fundamentally different from the GameBoy game that inspired it that it's essentially a brand new game. Having played both Metroid II and Samus Returns extensively now, I can absolutely verify that fact, as can many others here on this site. Funny thing is, you haven't even played the game yet (unless you suddenly bought a 3DS), but you're its harshest critic. It really is about spewing negativity with you, isn't it?
The individual formats chart is the most interesting because you can see how a game performs on different platforms. For example, Destiny 2 is #1 for PS4 and #2 for Xbox One, while NBA 2K18 is #4 for PS4, #6 for Xbox One and below the last position (#>40) for Switch (EDIT: I see that the physical version hasn't been released).
Congratulations to Metroid Samus Returns for reaching #7. That game is not the typical "remake", the gameplay, the mini bosses, the sound, everything is different, not to mention the visuals. It's a re-imagining of Metroid II's story.
@thesilverbrick Learn to read, I've bought the Legacy Edition. Did I buy it because it's awful? No! I also said it deserved to have placed higher. Yes, that's truly negative.
@samuelvictor
Ah, thanks for replying me.
Btw, I am from Surabaya, East Java island, Indonesia. One of the biggest city in Indonesia.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You once again avoided my main point and latched onto addressing something minor. Why do you keep criticizing the game for being a remake if all the objective evidence says that it's essentially a new game, especially if you haven't even played it?
@FragRed It's the second week for Destiny 2, first week for Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 and NBA 2K18... I think #7 (individual formats) is quite good, the first Switch game in the list is #12.
@samuelvictor Thanks, man. I appreciate the feedback. By and large, I just ignore his negativity. And if this was the first time he referred to the game as a remake in a negative context, I wouldn't have paid it any mind. But he's done it several times before, and I've addressed it, though he never responds. Generally speaking, I don't respond to him or knowledge his complaints unless I have something well thought out to say. Generally speaking, he tends to ignore me when I address him, especially when I pick apart the times when he's trolling for attention. For example, almost daily he complains about the lack of AAA third-party support on the Switch. More than once I've asked him why this is a surprise, seeing as Nintendo has not had much in the way of third-party support in 20 years or so. If he wants those kinds of games and only buys Nintendo consoles, he hasn't been able to play them since the 90s. Why is this suddenly more of a problem? He never responds, because doing so would be admitting that his argument is a silly one, given the past two decades of Nintendo's history. In fact, the Switch has had more significant third-party support in its first year than the Wii U had in the last four years of its life, and he jumps to defend that failure of a console every chance he gets. For crying out loud, he suggested that the developers of Chicken Wiggle to put their game on the Wii U (not Switch) to get more sales. Anybody with half a brain and who has been watching the video game industry for the past few years knows that that is a ridiculous idea. I attempted to address it, and again, no response. I want to clarify that I'm not hurt or offended by the lack of response. On the contrary, knowing that he has an agenda of negativity and refuses to be objective about anything, when he doesn't respond to me it tells me that I've made a point he doesn't want to address, because it threatens his rhetoric. There are people in this world that have not learned the difference between positive and negative attention. People who make controversial statements over and over again with little to no objective evidence and get a high from seeing the response. People who criticize and negatively review things they don't even own, just to upset the apple cart, so to speak. People who do not want an open and honest dialogue about things or to exchange opinions, just to spout theirs and ignore those who ask for clarification or point out evidence to the contrary. I'm not going to point fingers and call anybody that specifically, but I'm sure you've noticed things like that around here.
But hey, thanks for the acknowledgment. And it's nice to know there are other fans of Tina Fey around here. How's that for a wall of text?
@samuelvictor I actually think it has very little to do with the NES/SNES/N64 era. The Wii was hugely successful in the UK. I imagine if you stopped people in the street most will know what a Wii is (and many will have one still sitting under their TV) but most will not know what a Switch is.
The Wii U basically killed off Nintendo's retail presence. My local super market carries PS/XBox games but has literally nothing Nintendo related. Even with the apparent success of Switch, stores are not picking it up for the casual browser.
Picked up the legacy edition. Really enjoying it so far.
@chardir
Sort of right, but it does go back to the 80s/90s as well. Because Nintendo used third-party distributors (first Mattel then a company called THE) they never really built up good relationships with retail in the UK. Because sales were slow here compared to e.g. the USA, the nostalgia Nintendo trade on isn't as powerful here.
Yes, Wii and DS did superbly well but Wii U killed that momentum completely. Totally agree on that.
There are signs of a recovery though. Nintendo handhelds have always done really well in the UK so switch is making an impact. I've seen it in Asda and Sainsbury's while Argos have it on the front of their autumn/winter catalogue. So things are improving from the Wii U nadir.
NBA 2K18 on switch physical is not released until 17 October and the the charts have no access to eshop metrics so of course its not in the charts!
I just want to say that I got Samus Returns day one and I don't want it to ever end. Awesome game. Makes me wish they did the same with every 2D Metroid game plus an original entry.
I don't care if they're all made for the 3DS, I just want more.
It's a really great game, so far loving this reimagining. It's a billion times better than the original gameboy version. First time in awhile i've picked up my 3DS, but it got heavy use this weekend.
I didn't expect Rayman Legends DE to chart anywhere in the Top 40, so it did way better than I expected. LEGO Worlds seems to have okay-ish legs as well.
Metroid Samus Returns also sold pretty well, given the state of the franchise and the 3DS in the UK.
@samuelvictor I hear you. And I completely agree with your overall perceptions of the Switch. It's far from perfect, and I've gone on at length about its flaws, such as the overpriced accessories, limited internal memory storage, supply shortages, etc. Trust me; it's not all rainbows and sunshine. All in all, though, they've rectified several of the mistakes they made with the Wii U (mostly marketing and messaging), and not only is the Switch selling incredibly well as a result, but the first six months of Switch software easily eclipses the Wii U's first year or two on the market, and instead of third parties jumping ship one by one like they did on the Wii U, they're jumping on board, slowly but surely. I'm pleased to see progress, though Nintendo still has plenty of room for improvement.
But back to the original topic, I will admit that while the comment in question wasn't technically negative, using the words "even if it is a remake instead of a new game" implies a negative view, and that the game succeeds in spite of the fact that it's a remake and not new. The "compliment" he gave the game was laced with negativity about it being "not new," which isn't even true, according to everyone who has played it. Anyone who spent time with Metroid II and Samus Returns will tell you that there's a night and day difference between them. They are no more related than Mario 3 and Mario World. Same basic plot, but the similarities end there. He completely ignores the objective observations of people who have actually played the game so that he can throw a subtle dig at it. Not exactly a positive comment.
@Robotron2084 It's laughable to me that he can't admit he has an agenda. By and large I ignore most of his posts, but when he harps on topics I've addressed to him directly in posts he ignored, I can't help but comment.
If I wasn't a broke (and busy) college student right now, I'd be all over this game. As of right now, I only have just enough time for Sonic Mania
@Robotron2084 You're very likely right.
@Robotron2084 @thesilverbrick You're both laughable. Especially you Robotroll, who claims to have me on their ignore list. If I was, you wouldn't see thesilverbrick's comments referencing me. It's pathetic that you've tried to turn my positive post into something negative. I don't ignore people on this site unless I view them as a troll and not worth responding to. I responded to thesilverbrick, I don't really have a problem with them. I didn't have a problem with you either until this topic. For the record, I don't ignore people, it takes a lot, and I mean a lot for that to happen. There's just 2 people on my ignore list(where I've literally pressed the ignore button) and both are well deserved.
@Robotron2084 It's nice to meet more 30 Rock fans. I rewatch that series again and again and it never gets old. I miss it so much.
I had hoped Samus Returns would debut at a higher spot, i did my bit by buying both the Legacy Edition and the new amiibo's, so not everyone in the Uk has bad taste lol
Really hope Metroid: Samus Returns at least hits 1 million in sales worldwide. I want this series back for good this time.
"Stupid UK gamers and their terrible taste in games. In my country the top 40 is comprised entirely of Nintendo games every week. The PS4 and Xbox One have no presence in my country because in my country they were crushed by the dominant Wii U." Every deluded non-UK commenter on these articles every time...
@samuelvictor
I'd say the GameCube had a decent launch as I believe it was the fastest selling console in UK history. Not that that ultimately means a lot in the end, but still.
Did my part in the US. Special edition and amiibos bought.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Pro Evol shipped on the 12th and NBA is a huge game. For 3 days and on the 3DS that's a good result. End of the day the UK isn't a Nintendo stronghold, when we look at the US numbers we'll have more of an idea. Praying its a smash so we get a 2D Metroid 5 on the Switch after Prime 4.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Question for you.
Have you owned other Nintendo machines after Wii U ?
Because it seems you were complaining every single Nintendo games without owning them. Then, what did you play now ? What games do you want exactly ? Name those titles !
It seems you are moaning and pesting for AAA 3rd party games that will NEVER EXIST !
Keep moaning and daydreaming for Blah Blah Blah games. You will NEVER get your games !
I would advise people to steer clear of the NBA2K that's been released on switch its basically a buggy piece of beta version.
Like Driver 3, but at least it will get a patch I suppose, but thats not good enough the game should be finished by release date, I cannot support Devs who charge full price for a buggy piece of a unfinished crap game (to be fixed at a later date)
Another thing I hate about this kind of release, Devs release a statement saying they acknowledge the issues and are working on it, Not a single sorry in sight, These clowns are taking their user base for granted I do not approve.
Also the comment system on Nintendo life sucks big time donkey nuts
Also the reason for low nintendo sales in the UK is Clearly down to being an Island full of Pirates
Its at least in the top 10. That's nice to see!
