Some developers opt for the big build-up to releases, but in some cases games simply arrive. Drinkbox Studios has launched SEVERED on the Nintendo Switch eShop - it's out now in North American and Europe, priced at $14.99 / €14.99 / £13.49.
If you need a reminder, this is a game that utilises swipe controls for combat (so it's handheld mode only on Switch), and also has an underlying RPG structure. It previously arrived on both Wii U and 3DS, and we were big fans in our review; its Switch launch trailer is below.
We spoke to the developers for one of our 'Year in Development' articles last year, and they were full of praise for Nintendo and the process of bringing the game to the eShop.
Are you going to pick this up for Nintendo Switch?

Cool little surprise for Switch owners, I like this style of stuff just... arriving
It's a good title but price is high. You can pick it up half the price for the mobile iOS
Still never played it on Vita, I should try it sometime when it's on sale again.
Named because you can only play it severed from the Switch dock.
And make that 55€ I'll be spending next Tuesday on eShop releases that I won't quit Splatoon 2 for for even just a few hours. Overall, I'll buy Sonic Mania, Overcooked and now this.
@Pahvi It plays perfectly fine on a capacitive screen with your finger. It was originally developed for one too.
Bought it for Wii U when on sale but never played it.
Will likely buy this at some point on switch due to the higher resolution screen.
Interesting, another game that only works on handheld mode. I wonder if pointer controls could've worked with this game?
Handheld mode only?? I'll pass...my Switch has been on the dock since Launch Day!
It's a hard sell when I can get the game on iOS for £5
That is a rip off at this price - and handheld only mode...
Already playing this on Vita, but it's a great game that, despite tapping into a different culture, takes me right back to The Forest of a Thousand Daemons in terms of atmosphere. :3 Looks like it'll be the second exception to "all mode play" after VOEZ here, though... unless a future update implements Wii-like controls for the TV/tabletop mode as well.
I love these surprise releases. I'm very tempted to buy this as I never got to play it on Wii U but it's going to have to wait for now. I've spent far too much on games already and with Sine Mora out this week, possibly more Psikyo games and Sonic Mania next week, I've got more than enough to keep me entertained.
Speaking of Sine Mora,it's supposed to released today on the UK Eshop, although it's not available yet.I can find nothing about its NA release date though.I've already got the funds in my US account for it.
I have it on Vita and great game but then I got repetitive strain injury. My wife assumed I had been doing something else.
Guacamelee is one of my favorite Wii U games, but I never got Severed. I just didn't really feel its structure and reliance on touchscreen controls.
Cool to know it's came to Switch, but I guess nothing has changed in that regard.
Unexpected release but that's cool, definitely fine with more of this sort of thing. Still need to beat it on Vita so won't be double dipping.
And yet another rip off eshop price on the switch. Honestly if people keep paying it then they will keep charging it.
I got this for £7.50 on the Vita.
Always wanted to try this game. I'll probably buy it. Would love to own Guacamelee on Switch as well.
I played this game on Vita earlier this year. All I can say to anyone who hasn't played it is this: BUY IT! It's an incredible little game with a gorgeous visual style, a unique, skill-based combat system, a haunting atmosphere, and a moving plot about coming to terms with pain and loss. This is probably one of the best games on the eshop right now.
One of the absolute best games I played last year. It'll be real good on that big Switch screen.
I have it on my Vita, but it wasn't for me. I liked the world and atmosphere, but the gameplay was a little too much time-management in combat.
Wow! This sure came out of nowhere. I have it on both Wii U and 3DS and personally I think it's a better fit on those systems. But that's so cool it's on the Switch now and if you haven't played it, you need to!
Will this play as good on the Switch without a stylus? I know that may sound like a dumb question but I'm just curious. Once someone downloads it and tries it out, I would greatly appreciate a reply!
I have a personal rule of thumb for buying games when money is tight. $1 per 30 minutes of gameplay. I loved the style, atmosphere, subtle plot, non-obnoxious swipe controls, and character progression.
Unfortunately, I beat it 100% in under 7 hours, so I didn't quite meet my "cash to gameplay ratio". No major regrets or anything like that. I very much recommend this game. Doubly so if it's on sale.
Too pricy for a hires game that cannot be displayed on tv, because of its touch screen dependance. If you own an iPad, you'd better buy it for half the price in the IOS app store, and you'll enjoy the hires on the iPad's larger mobile screen ...
They really should have launched the Switch version for half the price ..
Severed is great. Trailers don't really convey how much fun it is!
I have the Drinkbox collection on Vita. I loved Guacamelee and Mutant Blobs, but I never really got on with this one. Maybe I should give it another go. It seems I'm in the minority.
I have this already but I have a better chance of actually playing it on switch. I'll pick it up later.
Bought this when it launched on iOS, but only played enough to realise it was pretty good. Not likely to double dip - but I'd love to see more of these guys' games come to Switch, like Guacamelee. Actually, I just like the idea of the Switch basically taking over from the Vita - but with extra Nintendo sauce and the benefits that come from, you know, being widely successful, rather than niche (outside Japan).
Always wanted this on my Wii u but never got around to it. Can anyone confirm playtime? Seams a tad expensive for what it is offering. I've bought alot of games recently so I'll pass for now but hopefully it gets a discount before Christmas and I'll surely jump then
Have they no loyalty discount if you have it another Nintendo system. I bought this on wiiU and was able to download it free on my 3DS. I don't expect it to be free on Switch but maybe using mynintendo rewards they could have given a discount for owning on another system.
On it.
I played it on the 3ds and I have the Wii U but I never played it on that system. I beat it on the 3ds but I might pick this up again on the switch because it was fun.
@Robohock You can beat the game 100% in well under a 10 hour play through. And sadly, there's no new game+, or hard mode. I'd say keep it on your radar, and wait for a sale. Still worth playing.
An excellent game on 3ds!!
@joey302 what a waste. Playing with a friend where no one expects to play videogames is Switch magic.
@NImH strictly a solo gamer for the most part. A little bit online here & there with Battlefield etc. Used to play couch co-op with the kids but they're old enough now to have their own interests now
So back to solo/online gaming for me- not exactly a waste- Switch is multi purpose let's not forget! But I prefer Switch on my Tv/Dock. Only time it comes off the dock is when I swap cards lol!
Yes, I've completed 'Severed' 100% in 7 hours as well, with all items and maxed skill trees. I continued and added another hour to get all achievements too.
It was very nice while it lasted, with some eerie locations and creepy story and "Fruit Ninja" gameplay turned into a worthwile and serious first person RPG sword slasher adventure mix. Some of the end game secrets and enemies were tougher so the exploration extended my run a couple of hours that would have otherwise ended in 5 hours.
Even though it's not a huge game it felt just about right, good enough to crave for more. I wouldn't mind a longer sequel with more enemies and items.
I just get more and more angry with every re release. I guess we get nothing original but overpriced re release after re release. Seriously buyers remorse for the Switch here. Zelda was great, but it has been anything but ever since. To be honest I didn't care much for severed on 3DS.
@Windy Well, I understand where you are coming from. Virtually all the non-AAA-Nintendo games released so far or upcoming for later this year, I already own on one system or another. And yeah, on top of that, the prices are .... hardly reasonable.
Still, I think every game coming to the platform is a plus. Not necessarily for me personally, but certainly for other people, who don't have the same collection of systems and games I have. I don't regret buying the Switch, because I knew what I was getting into:
I bought the game for Zelda (despite owning a WiiU), ARMS (probably the first fighting game I ended up loving since Power Stone or Bushido Blade), Splatoon 2 (which ... I really wish had proper party queueing ... as it stands, I have yet to pick it up), MarioXcomRabbids (no kidding, that game looks right up my alley), FE Warriors (suprisingly I really loved Hyrule Warriors), certainly Xenoblade (as good AAA homeconsole jRPGs are super rare these days, even on former powerhouses like Playstation), maybe even Mario Odyssey (the nostalgia for SM64 is strong with that one), certainly the next Fire Emblem mainseries game (PoR being one of my favourite games within the genre) and absolutely whatever Atlus/SMT game gets released next.
That's good enough for me. Anything else is just icing on the cake. I'm still hoping for some of the highly replayable evergreen roguelikes, I can never really get quite enough of, to come to the Switch. Stuff like Invisible Inc., FTL, Darkest Dungeon and so and so forth. Those I'd be willing to double dip on. For instance, Ironcast is one such game. I already own it, but come tomorrow, I'll definitely pick it up again, as unlike my PS4 version, I can take the Switch version with me, where ever I go
What I'm saying is that I've been along long enough to have a fair appreciation of how this was going to play out for the forseeable future. Nintendo decided to keep the 3DS going, and that pretty much meant that the Switch would be another Nintendo homeconsole - portable or not. Looking back to the Gamecube and everything since, it's pretty clear where we are headed with this.
As for Severed, I really enjoyed the game, but I completed it already. There is really nothing left for me there, so I'll have to pass. The price is alright though. I think $10 would have been more enticing, given the age and the fact many will own it already, but $15 is acceptable. $30 or more though, like others games that are currently being released, is just insane (looking at you Cave Story+).
Long story short: As with everything these days, it's key to manage expectations. Look at me, I'm severely disappointed with Splatoon 2, simply because I expected I could play the game in the same way, I can play ever other modern multiplayer action game out there. I was a reasonably enough expectation, but given we're talking about Nintendo, it was still an overreach, and now I just can't get over it =(
@Ryu_Niiyama
How is it?
Reggie must be furious that this game, which so many people will find joy in, is coming to Nintendo fans.
@Ralek85 I guess I'm just getting angry in my old age lol. I recently wanted to sell my Switch. My wife put the Kabash on that. She is buying me Xenoblade 2 for Christmas. I'm sure I will be glad I didn't sell when I'm playing that I was also playing the Monster Hunter Demo earlier and WOW! Very pretty game. If Capcom doesn't port that... They are just stupid.
It's truly excellent on 3DS and Wii U especially since it's crossbuy enabled. If I had a Switch, I would someday consider getting Severed also for it. Drinkbox are a really quality dev, better than most AAA houses.
@Windy I think Xenoblade is going to be pretty good. I am a bit worried with what we saw of the draw distance and LoD in the game previewed so far, but the gameplay itself looked fun.
Definitely looking forward to it, esp. since interesting jRPGs have become rare. It basically took the PS4 until earlier this year to get anything major in that regard going - not to say that Persona 5 was not worth the wait, but still ... it was a looonnggg time coming.
I gotta admit that I'm still way more excited for the next 'home console' FE and SMT (V?) hopefully coming next year - at least to Japan. FE and SMT are two of my favourite series and seeing them in glorious HD ... man, I gotta say, I cannot wait! I still remember the first time I booted up Path of Radiance on my trusty old Gamecube - just glorious
As for MH, I gotta admit, I'm not well versed in that regard, and I haven't tried the demo. I bought MH3U on WiiU during a sale on a whim, and played for a bit, but I ... never quite understood the appeal. I might give the XX demo on Switch a whirl IF it is announced that it gets localized. From what I understand though, there seems to be some skepticism in that regard, as apparently Capcom might be hell-bend on pushing MH Worlds on X1/PS4/PC in the west.
Based on previous experiences, I'd say if you want Capcom to do something, chances are pretty good it, it is going to head right into the opposite direction :-/
@Ralek85 I'm actually not a big fan of Monster Hunter myself but have found myself starting to like it more as time goes on. But I actually dislike the stress filled constant action and would rather relax with a turn based RPG. But it is wildly popular and I just don't get Capcom attitude towards porting Monster Hunter West. They can't feed us the Dragon Quest excuse saying it's not as popular in North America or Europe. It sells like Hotcakes. Maybe they are tired of making a Gazillion dollars on Monster Hunter. My guess is that Nintendo did something to tick them off and that it would have to be pretty bad for them not to want that money.
@Windy I don't think that is actually quite right. From the little I've read about it so far, it does in fact not seem to sell all that great outside of Japan.
I just checked vgchartz really quick just now (I know, not the best source, but still good enough for a rough idea) and according to that, 2/3 of sales of MH4U for example occurred in Japan. Leaving the rest of the world with about 1.3 million copies sold all-in-all. Might be off though, but still according to Wiki, Capcom announced that MH4U was the first MH to have more than 1 million units shipped to Europe and US - which might mean the games are getting more popular, but still while none of this is nothing of course, it's also not exactly 'wildy popular'.
It could therefore make sense for Capcom to focus on a project like MH to try to boost their overseas sales, as those ... are certainly not what they could be given the vastness of these markets.
