Nintendo has announced that a new Splatoon 2 Direct will take place this Thursday in preparation for the release of the squid sequel. The information surrounding the Direct is brief to say the least, stating that Nintendo will be sharing an "in-depth refresher on the upcoming Nintendo Switch game", including "some of the new features, weapons and styles".
The Splatoon 2 Direct will take place at 7am Pacific / 10am Eastern / 3pm UK / 4pm CEST on Thursday 6th July. As always here at Nintendo Life we will be hosting the live stream with a blog and covering all the news as it's announced.
Will you be watching the Splatoon 2 Direct?

I'll be there for the show.
I'll be there for show!
Here we go.
Man I was hoping for a more general direct.
We need ANYTHING on that multiplayer Kirby 3DS game. Footage of the N3DS version of Fire Emblem Warriors and release dates for Monster Hunter Stories and other games.
All I want is local co-op splitscreen mode!
I mean, I'd be okay with Nintendo leaving some mystery to the game, but you can bet I'll still be there!
@Pikachupwnage those are some big questions maybe they be included in this or an after the direct as more news type of thing
I think there going to announce cross play with PS4!
can't wait to hear more.
@Wyk126 And a good campaign.
Of course the first time I'm scheduled to work in the morning in months is also the day we have a direct lol. I'll watch it later when they put it on youtube.
We've already seen so much of the game, I can't say I'm particularly excited for another Direct focused on it. I'll still watch though and I'm certainly looking forward to the game's release.
So hyped for Spla2n, I'll even hook up my WiiU to play the first one in anticipation! Can't seem to find a preorder for the green and pink Joy-Cons here in Germany sadly.
I'm at work... boo!!
I said so 5-6 weeks ago. I said we'd get a Splatoon 2 Direct. We had the Nintendo Direct on April 12th, showing Switch and 3DS games plus bigger ARMS and Splatoon 2 segments. We then had the ARMS Direct on May 17th, focusing only on ARMS, plus a short Splatoon 2 trailer at the end. It was only logical all along we'd get a full Splatoon 2 Direct, as well... and here it is!
Aaaah! Couldn't it have been a little closer to the launch of the game? Watching this is going to kill me! ..but I have to watch it! ..aaaaaaah!
I can't wait for this Direct!
I-I-I think imma blow a major load of ink!
Must we spoil more of the game? We've had a good chunk already, we had a Testfire (Which I support another one could be announced), we know of the many collectibles coming (Amiibo, limited edition controllers, etc.), can we just leave a little mystery for launch day, more then the Squid Sisters Mystery reveal please.
Cool. Wonder what more they'll show off.
I think we could also get a new Splatoon 2 Global Testfire, as it's a long time since the first one. And I think the first one, in March, partially was to also sell consoles. The ARMS Global Testpunch did actually end 12 days before the game launched.
Surprises!
I just sent my console in to get repaired. They're going to announce a second test fire and I won't be able to attend this one either
But I still hope the direct is great. Not sure what exactly is going to be announced but more Splatoon info is never a bad thing.
As I have been waiting for some kind of deal or bundle to take the plunge on buying a Switch, all I am hoping for is an announcement of the Splatoon 2 bundle for NA.
I love these short-notice directs!
Yay Nintendo Direct... I guess. Was hoping for the next Direct to be an Indie or Third Party Direct. Ah well.
To all you in North America wanting a bundle: Why do you want a bundle? You save maybe USD 10, but you only get the downloadable version of Splatoon 2.
The bundle in Europe has the downloadable version, at least.
Don't really exactly see the point given how we know a lot. But ok.
@Wyk126 if they announced this it would turn into a day one purchase for me. As it stands I won't be getting this until probably next year when we get another Switch
I don't need any more encouragement to buy Splatoon 2 on day 1, so I kind of feel like any news is just spoilers at this point. I'll be watching anyway
I might tune in.
My family has banned me from playing the game but we'll still be here for the live stream. I need to go to Nintendo Direct Anonymous or something, can't miss a ND, ya never know.
Looks like it's mostly just going over the stuff we already know. Hope we get the bundle and Pink/Green Joy-Cons confirmed for NA.
@BornInNorway81 I'd prefer the download version and if it also saves me $10 even better. Plus Splatoon is my wife's favorite game and her birthday is this month so if I got her the bundle then that's added excitement
I'm hoping for a GOOD couch multiplayer mode! The 2 player mode in the original wasn't very fun and I really don't want to have to buy a second Switch to play with my wife
Please tell me the Splatoon 2 release date has been bumped to next week!
@leo13 The first game allowed local Split-screen co-op. I can't imagine they'd take that out in what's supposed to be a much more fleshed out sequel. I think you're covered! Especially because the control scheme should be completely covered on a single joy-con.
Ugh ill be driving into work at that time...but I am already sold on the game so that is ok.
My day off! Me and my kids will be tuning in!
Nice! Maybe a look at the multiplayer phone app? That was still set to launch in limited form with Splatoon wasn’t it?
Sweet! I'll tune in, even if it makes the wait a little more unbearable, haha.
@Pikachupwnage i mean, this is it man. I dunno if you were around for the Wii U generation, but nothing has changed for Nintendo except better reception to Switch. The lack of games is still there. The lack of game genres is still there. The lack of really any variety is still there. And most importantly, the drought between releases is most definitely still there.
I bet this is when the Splatoon 2 Switch bundle will be announced for North America.
Of course I'm gonna watch it (although probably not live)!
But right now the only thing I care about is: will we get another Global Testfire?
@gatorboi352 The Switch has been out for 4 months. It has a better library than the Wii U had at 4 months. You're complaining because you have an audience.
Like I still need a reason to pick up Splatoon 2 at launch, but hey! The more Directs the better!
You can bet I'll be there live!
Definitely the franchise I care less about, but I'm glad to see they're giving more attention to new IPs.
@ballistic90 The only thing based in reality that you said was how long the Switch has been out.
@gatorboi352 Good thing that your comment was opinion-based too then, and not based in reality either. :')
@ninkza go look at game release dates for Switch. While you're there, go look at the genres for those releases.
Did you even play Splatoon?
If so, please explain how this would work:
"the control scheme should be completely covered on a single joy-con"
I think you will come up one stick and four buttons short.
@ThatNyteDaez

@gatorboi352 see, I had a Wii U, and I can tell you that in the first 4 months it didn't have much of a library. Complain all you want and continue to display your ignorance for the world if you want.
I'll tune in for the headlines...but stay for the Splatoon2 news.
Wasn't a huge fan of the first splatoon but them green/pink joy con set looks very tempting. Lets hope for a bundle.
See you all there!
Can't believe that my first game after Zelda will be Mario Rabbids (Already own Mario Kart 8 on wii u, and arms/splatoon are skip-able in my book).
@gatorboi352 I dunno man, having worked in retail during that first year of the WiiU's release, I can tell you lots of my customers were disappointed buying the WiiU that holiday. About 80% of that launch lineup was still on our racks for almost a whole year until more titles came out. Many of my regulars came back to me asking when some new games were coming out, and I didn't have much of an answer for them but, "wait and see". It was rough. No new Nintendo games released for 4 months from November to March (Lego City Undercover), then June (New Super Luigi U, Game and Wario), then things start to get rolling from there. There were no new physical games for 3 months between January and March. In my experience as a salesperson, 3 month long droughts of no new games for a brand new system is worse than a few games per month because at least something is always coming out. And now that customers are being more receptive with the idea of the eShop with the Switch than they were with the WiiU, I can sell them eShop cards. If we had any to sell, that is, they're constantly selling out!
You can see it for yourself here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wii_U_software#Games (click North America or Europe under the Regions Released/Release date header to sort by release date, then scroll down until it starts listing November 18 or 30 2012)
You'd have to admit, here were a lot of lackluster ports to pad out the release in that initial batch. Some of those games were already released on 360/PS3 by that time. If I had bought the WiiU on launch as well, I would have been so upset, that I'd be steering people towards the PS4 and Xbox One instead (which were announced in February and May respectively, right in the middle of that WiiU drought). Aside from a couple titles, there was really nothing else that could have saved that launch except for maybe Rayman Legends releasing on time, and we all know what happened there.
I predict we'll be seeing the app (which was leaked as the "Nintendo Switch Online Lounge"), more single player, more maps, weapons, and other small features, like LAN and split-screen play.
Let's hope they clear up the confusion over the apalling voice chat system!
think I will skip this one ...NOT!
interested to see if they put a clan management system into the game. this would help to build the e-sports side of things
This is why i brought a switch before Christmas can't wait for more info.
Eh, not interested. Splatoon is a great game, don't get me wrong, but it ain't my cup of tea. I'll be patiently waiting for more Fire Emblem Warriors info.
Damn. I'll be at work. Ah well, I know I'll just either tune in on the can or just check out the articles that follow. Tomorrow's a very busy day for me anyway.
@loyalroyal1989 Switch wasn't out before christmas.
@Pikachupwnage Yeah, getting a direct focused on just one game can be pretty hit and miss. I feel like the Arms direct had the benefit of the franchise being new, so it was more exciting to me.
I don't know how I feel about this, I might just check it out afterwards.
@ThatNyteDaez
March is before December so yes it was out way before Christmas, but it was looking like there would not be enough games to make it worth while before then. But I am getting more excited for the games coming for it as the year has gone on.
Nintendo's last chance to convince me to get the sequel... Original was a decent summer game, but Overwatch is more my style and has lasted me over a year of satisfaction.
Gonna avoid this direct. I want to have some surprises left when I get the game.
I'm not expecting much new from this direct, but I do know that Splatoon continued to get more addicting and fun with drip fed content, so I'm excited for what that holds
@Samus7Killer Definitely think you should get it. I thought the first one at the start was pretty good but all the free DLC and updates really kept me hooked. So whatever they show Friday is 100% not everything they're working on. Overall I had a lot of fun with the first one and I have faith in Nintendo to do the same with this one
@PK_Boss11 I'm 50-50 on getting this game. I just might pull the trigger on it. Ill tune in on the direct for sure. I kinda want this after getting annoyed playing ARMS.
I'm going we'll get a tour of the hub world and see the different shops, move into single player mode but not spend too much time, see online modes then get to hear how online will work in more detail. I assume it's basically what the ARMS direct was giving us a tour of the game.
@Samus7Killer Aw I really like Arms. I really like both Splatoon and Arms because they're so different and unique. I have an Xbox One and play Halo and Destiny and all that stuff, but Splatoon is so unique which is why I love it
@PK_Boss11 they are different and unique. And I enjoy them for some dabble play for sure. I'm gonna get Splatoon2 for sure now after some thinking and watching the direct... I definitely enjoyed Splatoon on WiiU and since then got addicted to Overwatch.... I know its different but ill go ahead and get Splatoon2 very soon.
@Samus7Killer Yeah I preordered it as soon as it got announced. The direct was great, and I'm really excited that drip fed content will happen for a year and splatfests for two. Glad to see they're doing that with this one since it worked so well with the first one.
On an unrelated note I heard Overwatch is a great game, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet, is it that good? 🤔
@PK_Boss11 yep definitely gonna pick Splatoon2 up at launch with my next pay day ill pay it off. I'm getting really excited after the direct.
OMG Overwatch is life. Its one of my greatest multiplayer game ive ever played. And Blizz is still supporting it after just over a year and will continue to give us more charachters and maps and stuff. Its awesome. I highly suggest it. And this is coming from someone that dispises FPS style games. It just has so much charm and addiction similar what Splatoon offers. OMG!
@Samus7Killer Sounds cool, maybe if I have some extra time I'll pick it up, although gonna be hard to find time to play that with destiny 2's beta and Splatoon 2 this month 😂
@PK_Boss11 yeah I hear that on hard to find time. Ill skip Destiney 2 after not enjoying the first one. Overwatch and Splatoon2 will be my online shooting gaming from here on out.
I can't believe Nintendo is doing a splatfest before the game release. Guess I gotta download the demo again.
@Samus7Killer Yeah I had a great time with splatfests, but the guest star ones were my favorite, like the spongebob and transformers ones. Would love to see like Avengers vs X Men or Jedi vs Sith. Lot of cool combos to create. I'm sure they'll have a lot of cool ideas especially since they're doing splatfests for two years post release.
And yeah it is a bit odd that they're having one pre release but it's a good marketing tool. Although I'm quite torn about what side to choose for this one. I'm on Team Ice cream cake 😂
