Super Mario Odyssey has arguably been Nintendo's crowning glory at this year's E3, as you'll know if you've read our glowing and detail-rich preview from the show floor.
The latest entry in the long-running Super Mario series, Odyssey is shaping up to be the plumber's most impressive and feature-rich yet, and just in case you're not excited enough already, Nintendo has published a special developer diary with the game's director, Kenta Motokura.
In the footage, Motokura goes into detail regarding the game's story, Mario's new abilities and even how amiibo will be used in the game. As well as the three new Mario, Peach and Bowser figures - all dressed in wedding outfits - Motokura confirms that all existing amiibo will have some functionality in the game.
Super Mario Odyssey launches on Switch this October. The wait is already killing us.

Great video, I'm really getting into the whole theme
Damn, now I'm eager to play it.
This is going to be amazing, I just know it.
Wow...
@Zibi100 Please don't spam those Tumblr links.
Man oh man. It's like this is the reason videogames were invented.
Wish I wasn't so distracted by the amiibo. He said the wedding costumes "will help you out in the game". I don't want to be hindered for not buying them, I already own a Mario amiibo. And Peach. And Bowser. Will they only be sold in 3 packs? Will Mario be bundled w/ every game? Will they be available anywhere besides eBay if I don't pre-order them? They've become an unnecessary distraction to an otherwise brilliant and wonderful game. If Nintneod wants to push amiibo so hard, make a Skylanders or Lego Dimension or Disney Infinity game, Nintnedo Land 2, give them real purpose, don't make me buy 1 b/c I need a helpful wedding outfit skin.
And now besides amiibo, thanks to single player offline Zelda, I have to wonder if there will be a $20 expansion pass.
Switch bundle w/ the game, expansion pass and Mario amiibo for $350 this holiday and all is forgiven Nintendo.
@rjejr I'm willing to bet that it's like the other Mario games where you get that special "you suck" suit that is all white and sparkly and let's you cheese through the game.
@Kalmaro
What did you mean by that comment?
What I hate the most about all epic game reveals: Releasing in ___ months
this video makes me want the game even more.
does anyone know how Bowser's fetish with kidnapping peach start? at least he is not the first bad guy to try to Marry her against her will.
maybe the ending of the video game will show the wedding between Mario and Peach. with Luigi being the best man.
of course then there might be a game over screen of where it shows the wedding between Bowser and Peach. with Bowser Jr. being the best man.
i bet you super Mario fans out there can picture the wedding between Mario and Peach being held at Peach's castle in the mushroom kingdom.
@Kalmaro You mean like this?
That's me. I'm all about sucking and breezing thru games, ask anybody, I have a rep to live down to.
So, anybody else think the entire game is set in kind of a fake Broadway play musical number world and all the worlds Mario goes to are just different stages like a Hollywood movie set?
The weird wall background combined with the 1950's musical theme song has me leaning in that direction. And those white wedding tuxedos w/ the top hats. So it's kind of like Lego Dimensions, except instead of traveling to actual worlds it's hoping around fake Hollywood sets. It's all very Muppets.
Hey @ Spoony_Tech what do you think, a little Rainbow Connection moment at the end? Maybe they all hold hands and take a bow.
@Kalmaro hopefully not I hated that, one of the reason she why 3D world is the worst
I didn't think the whole capturing mechanic would be in the game from the first trailer but they really surprised me in a positive way. I feel like Luigi, Yoshi and the toads haven't been shown yet so I wonder if they are going to add another layer to the game already that we haven't seen ? The game as it looks now has already sold me but I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to see them announce another thing I completely didn't expect into the game! I really want to know what the amiibo does too because I understand tapping Mario will give Mario an outfit but then what about Peach and Bowser?! Still so many secrets!!!
@Mario500 @rjejr Think white tanooki
@stevenw45
Psst... I found the "scandal" of Bowser & Princess marriage from last trailer of Parental Control apps.... XD
Bowser jr probably was born from Princess Peach as Biological Mother. XD
I can only dream how the final grand master champions road galaxy special world will be like
I can't be the only one who got the "cap in hand" reference. I'm expecting some "12 hours" or "half a press" memes soon.
@Anti-Matter
can you please post that video please. or at least send a link to it.
@stevenw45
Here you go
Oh I can already imagine how the game will support all Amiibos. Wouldn't it be awesome if you would possess the figure of your Amiibo ingame? for example, you could shoot ink and swim in it with a Splatoon Amiibo, or shoot and morph into a ball with Samus, ride an Arwing with Fox or drive an F-Zero vehicle with Captain Falcon. Or eat enemies as Kirby. Or ride a horse with Link. The possibilities are almost endless!
"use the joy cons motion controls to allow you to more throw your cap more intuitively" Wow... I can't believe even to this day, they're still trying to shill waggle, on the Switch of all consoles.
@rjejr I'd be happy if more games committed to supporting as many amiibo as possible. I still think it's weird that Mario Kart 8 didn't support more.
@aaronsullivan "I'd be happy if more games committed to supporting as many amiibo as possible"
More games supporting as many amiibo as possible is nice, but I want Ntinedo to keep to what they said - amiibo are better b/c 1 amiibo, many games, not 1 toy per game. My Mario should work as Mario in any game, regardless of his skin. Same for any other character. Telling people they need to buy 1 Mario for SSB, 1 Mario for Mario Party, 1 Mario for Mario, defeats the whole purpose of how amiibo were presented. 9 Link. Nine. Why should anybody have to buy 9 Link to get all of a Zelda that already exists on the disc, cartridge or download of the game they already purchased? If they want to impress me w/ amiibo, put the code on the toy, show me I need to purchase it to get the content.
By all means, make as many skins as they want, 100 Mario, Link and Samus, make them do something in every game they make, but they said I'd only need to buy 1, so keep to that.
9 Links. It's getting out of hand. Have you seen a Guardian or Wolf Link on a store shelf lately? Or available online? Lock gear behind a toy then don't make enough toys, perfect. I still can't believe they locked an entire character, Wolf Link in BotW, behind a toy they don't have readily available. I'd be fine if it was a playable border collie and the toy turned it into Wolf Link, just a skin, but to remove a companion character, that seems noticeably wrong.
@Anti-Matter
i do not see the "scandal" of Bowser & Princess peach marriage in the video. it is just bowser protecting bowser Jr. from the dangers of the cloud...lol
in super mario rpg, what was the name of the villain that wanted to marry peach in the city of marrymore? at least i think the name of the city marrymore.
@stevenw45
Bowser has Princess Peach Wallpaper on his Handphone, so in my imagination it seems Bowser has get "Married" with her. XD
Just kidding.
@Anti-Matter
i think him seemingly having a fetish for kidnapping her time and time again for the past 20+ years says that more. of course then Mario has to go through the trouble of rescuing her time and time again.
hopefully the ending credits of the game will be of Mario and Peach getting married at Peach's castle.
for all we know in one of the areas there will be a game over scene of where Bowser succeeds in marrying peach at his castle.
or somewhere in between of where there is a random cutscrene of the wedding between Mario and Peach of where Bowser is walking Peach down the isle. just imagine bowser crying over his failure of making her his bride....lmao
The googly eyes on the cap and the possesing (or should I say "transformations"?) reminds me of Banjo Kazooie.
@rjejr I hear you on the amiibo variations. I'm only missing one Zelda amiibo, Shiek and I'd have liked to have the unique bonus in Breath of the Wild and finding Shiek for a reasonable price is pretty much impossible. So, when there's something you want and you can't get it it hurts.
I have a potentially vain hope that with the bigger user base on Switch, the situation with amiibo might get better. With bigger numbers the economies of scale allow for more amiibo sitting on shelves and clearance sales.
Or maybe — just maybe — Nintendo will realize they can never keep up and release amiibo cards with identical codes to the statues maybe with a 6-month delay or something.
@aaronsullivan "I hear you on the amiibo variations."
Oops, sorry, I just wrote you a way too long post all about amiibo, yet again. I would have skipped this had I read this first.
I like you trading card idea. Though of course they will be blind pack like other cards, but hey it worked for AC so count me in. But really, if it's just a code, why nto just sell it as DLC, Switch has an eShop. No Netflix, Youtube or web browser, but it has an eShop.
Oh, you meant code cards, not cards w/ NFC chips. Oh well, either one works for me, just get them out there. Good luck finding Shiek. $30 on eBAa for a $10 toy is kinda nuts. Maybe you can find someone selling a NES Mini for $300 who will throw in a Sheik amiibo for ya? Wasn't Ntinedo supposed to announce SNES Mini this week according to Pachter or some leak?
