We recently did a quick article on the upcoming HORI Real Arcade Pro V Fight Stick for Switch which of course looks perfect for playing Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers with.
It's now been given a release date of 31st July in Japan priced at ¥16,178 ($145) in case you wanted to try and import it. No doubt we'll see a proper Western release soon enough if you wait.
HORI will also be releasing a cheaper alternative to the Switch Pro Controller on the same day priced at ¥3,218 ($29). The catch is it is wired and has no gyro, HD Rumble or NFC reader. It does however have a D-Pad which can be popped off and placed in the back of the controller, presumably so the button arrangement perfectly matches that of the Joy-Con when connected to the Joy-Con grip.
Will you be picking up one of these lovely new controllers from HORI in July?

I love horis controllers so the pro one is mine for sure
Now if only Namco would be so kind to bring "Tekken 7" to the Switch... #SwitchfulThinking
I prefer to pay more for official, high quality, controllers (regarding the pro alternative). The hori arcade pro looks nice though.
@Shiryu I would love to play Tekken on the Switch . I only have it for PS2.
Hori one would be nice, but the fact that it's not wireless kind of kills it for me.
@zenarium I have stated in the past and I will state it again: "Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Wii U Edition" is the finest fighter that has been released in the last years. I need my "Tekken" fix on the Switch!
Wait. What's the point of the weird D-pad here ?
If I didn't already own a Pro Controller, I wouldn't buy this one instead, but as an extra for multiplayer with my kids, heck yeah.
I've got a pro controller so that'll do. The fight stick will be great for USF2 and all those neo geo games. Personally though, doubt I'll get it for the price, even though I know it'll be quality. Interestingly enough, I wonder if it uses HORI parts like the PS4/Xbox One versions now, or if they went with Sanwa or Seimitsu parts
I don't know why anyone wouldn't want a d-pad.
Sure the split buttons are bearable on the joycon as it lets them be split, but on a normal controller ots d-pad all the way!
As for the controller itself its tempting, i still think that the official procontroller is ridiculously overpriced so might pick this one up, although lack of gyro is a bummer.
@Shiryu It will probably be released and it will be AWESOME
@zenarium Glorious! GLORIOUS!
@Shiryu OMG, playing with Super Mario skin :3 My life is incomplete atm, this will be the final piece of the puzzle!
@zenarium but why stop there?
I have the Hori Fight Pad for the PS4 and it is great so I will be picking up this pro controller alternative as, as much as I love it otherwise, the dpad on the switch pro controller leaves a lot to be desired.
Great to see HORI supporting the Switch like this. I'm definitely interested in that Pro Controller for player 2. I hope that detachable D pad gives you the same feeling as a true D pad.
I'm also interested in picking up 8Bitdo's SNES game pad because that was my favorite control for playing Street Fighter II. I updated the firmware for my 8Bitdo NES control and it works fantastic.
Pro controller looks perfect for player 2 type situation. Can deal without all the other features especially the HD rumble which has been highly disappointing thus far.
I would pay $40 more for a great controller feel, HD Rumble, NFC reader, gyroscope, wireless, and Nintendo made without importing it
That's a lot of missing features for $29.99......think I will get a second set of JoyCons next time they are on sale
Arcade stick will be too expensive for me and already have Nintendo pro controller. I am curious about that pop-out D-pad though. Wonder if Nintendo will make their own adaptor for a joycon using a similar idea? Though I suspect a D-pad joycon being announced at E3 for virtual console.
Is it possible to use wired controllers when undocked?
i take it that its wired to improve input lag for fighting games etc
Where can I pre-order the HORI Real Arcade Pro V Fight Stick for Switch?
Keeping an eye on that Pro controller.
I'm getting the HRAP. I'll try to see if I don't have to go about importing but it shall be mine.
@Anguspuss That is usually the reason most manufacturers go with although there might also be some sort of restriction on 3rd parties a la MS and their controller restrictions. I'm assuming anti lag as well though.
Shame it lacks gyro. That means it's no good for Splatoon.
if it had gyro, I'd be all over it. But as it stands, that's a deal breaker for me.
Does anyone know if the Hori fight sticks ever come in wireless versions (or with a wireless option?) I'm not into fighters, BUT my inner arcade enthusiast needs this. My NES and SNES Advantage owner needs this. But I'd love a wireless version, input lag and all.
Love Hori, but between the non-cross D-Pad and the fact it's not wireless, count me out.
@zenarium WIIU VERSION IS FANTASTIC.
@NEStalgia I dont think so. Pro competitors will not use wired connections as they have a slight delay. So all good quality sticks are wired.
Wait if the Hori Pro controller isn't wireless then that must mean it would work on PC too right? I may pick that up as my PC primary controller.
@YANDMAN I figured as much. But it sure would be a nice option, especially with Switch!
@NEStalgia Eww no. In general baring the wii fight sticks (because they function as classic controllers) most fight sticks are wired. The FGC tends to prefer wired as a whole anyway. I've seen people make wireless sticks though. And hori hasn't really said what they are going to do with the HRAP. It might be wireless. I haven't seen product pages yet.
Edit: I think hori did a wireless option for the ps3.. I could be mistaken. I built sticks and went with the TE for the PS360.
Neve liked that Hori Pro Controller's d-pad, now I like it even less. I'll stick to the official pro controller. Tempted by the Splatoon coloured one but since I won't be getting Splatoon 2 until later in the year or next year, I'll wait and see if any other specially coloured ones are released.
@Ryu_Niiyama Wired controllers, and CRT displays for zero latency! Yeah, I'm casually familiar with the rigors of tournament gaming, purely as a spectator. It certainly needs it at that level!
But the nature of Switch is just begging for wireless as an option! Just stick a USB cable on it, include a "mode switch" near the turbo buttons, a battery and BT transmitter and add a Nintendo tax! I'd buy! Switch is a little light weight if you're running USB extension cables across the room and trip over it. It won't end well. Nobody cares if you yank the plug out of a PS4. It might pull the plug into a usable position outside the Eraser.
Oh, I NEED that HRAP in my life! I don't care if I have to import it, though I'm sure Video Games New York will stock up on a few. Or maybe NintendoNY might carry it! I can't wait!
I really like the look of that fight stick, haven't bought one since the Dreamcast days, so I could be tempted
@NEStalgia I will admit I'm wondering about putting some sort of dock on a HRAP to hold the switch in a table top/ portable esque mode. ...somebody has got to think of that. I'm no good with plastic molds... ugh if somebody tripped and the switch went flying...oh my stomach...
@Ryu_Niiyama That would be a really cool idea actually. It would make the Switch into a full-on legit arcade cabinet! You have the control deck, the slightly too small screen for the task at hand, it's like teleporting to the late 80's!
I still have an Atari 2600 demo booth arcade control deck sitting around. Very rare piece that unfortunately has significant water damage (rusted metals, badly damaged/disintigrating MDF panel.) It's really just trashcan fodder, but I can never get myself to get rid of it....
And, yeah, dangling cords and Switch really should not mix on a regular basis.... That's one thing that makes me uneasy about the HRAP if not wireless. I do have wired eithernet on my Switch but I carefully routed the cable around the room. HRAP won't lend well to that. I DO see in the picture above what looks like a little trap door of sorts on the rear of the deck. I wonder what could be in there? Maybe it's just cord storage. But I keep dreaming that it's a battery+cord storage box.
With the upgraded 8bitdo controller im not really in need of any new cheap pro controller without gyro.
I will get the Nes30 Pro from 8bitdo at least its wireless and around the same price but im glad we are seeing these alternatives I was getting very frustrated.
I've convinced myself that I'm bad at Street Fighter only because I don't have one of those fancy controllers.
I don't mind the controller bein wired, with no gyro or rumble. If the D-pad is good, I'll get it !
@Tedikuma Perhaps if you used a USB-A to C adapter (that's essentially what the dock is in the first place), but even then, since the USB-C port is on the bottom on the system, you couldn't use it propped up in table-top mode and would have to awkwardly look down on it laying flat.
@Alikan I wouldn't count on that, since not only would that setup be impractical for any other use, all signs at this point to no VC for Switch in the foreseeable future-- they seem to be testing the market for emulated games via "Classic Mini" consoles for now. And considering the overwhelming success of the NES, I tend to think they'll likely stay that course.
@thatawesomedude alternative joycons aside: the VC will launch this year and they will talk about it at E3. If they somehow avoid it until 2018, I'll find a crow outside and do the honorable thing. Lol.
@Alikan I'm pretty confident you're going to be proven wrong (at least if your idea of what counts as "VC" is the same as Nintendo's). Nintendo has been cryptic about it so far-- suspiciously never using the term "Virtual Console" in reference to classic games on Switch (and allowing NeoGeo games on the Switch eShop without the "Virtual Console" label, which directly goes against their policy on the shops on previous systems). That means they're up to something-- mostly likely abandoning the current VC concept altogether for Switch. Whatever forms the "classic games" the subscription service will provide will be in, they won't be the unadulterated (whenever possible) emulations that VC were. For those, we'll have to rely on the 3DS and Classic Minis. If VC does ever eventually come to Switch, I wouldn't expect it until near the end of its life-cycle.
I'd normally speculate that Pro Controller alternative would still communicate via Bluetooth and just simply be powered by USB... but since that Arcade controller is most likely fully wired and launching the same day, an upcoming update will likely enable USB controllers. Hopefully, it'll apply to other pre-existing USB controllers (or maybe even that Smash Bros. GameCube adapter for Wii U), though that's likely just wishful thinking on my part.
w00t PC compatible!
Im still hoping Brooks makes a switch Super convertor
Can I replace the ball with a bat stick? My hands are too large for the short ball sticks and fingers don't comfortably rest underneath the ball.
