Thumper recently made it onto our list of the biggest Nintendo Switch eShop games of 2017, and with good reason. The intense rhythm game is eye-catching and has a pulse-rattling soundtrack - this writer still has vivid memories of playing a PC demo for the game back in 2015, so it's certainly exciting news that it's coming to Switch soon.
With that 18th May release so close the eShop trailer has been posted online, and it highlights some of the plaudits the game has previously received.
Are you interested in picking this up on Switch?

I'm on the fence for this one , waiting for some Nintendo Switch reviews.
This looks intense. I love myself a good experience/game eshop title
I find these graphics more impressive than most so called AAA titles. Its a game I will pick up for sure.
The graphics look amazing, but i think that would distract me from the actual game
Cool trailer.
This along with Rez Infinite almost got me to get PSVR but stock shortages at release along with lackluster software support over the last few months has put me off so I look forward to getting it on Switch
Hmm, I think "Journey Through a Robot's Digestive System" would have been a better name for this one. Can't say I find it too exciting to look at... maybe the end boss is hammering the x-button to squeeze yourself out of a robotic backside?
Trippy visuals but what do you actually do?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's a rhythm game, so think Guitar Hero but in space. On the first parts of the track, timely button presses gain you speed, with the obvious goal of getting to the end of the track in record time.
______________________________________________________________________
EDIT:
In between the start and journey towards the boss fight, you'll also fight smaller enemies.
______________________________________________________________________
At the end of the track, there will be a boss fight and if you hit certain points at the right time, by pressing the buttons correctly, you'll fire missiles/lasers at him and you need to dodge or bounce back what he fires at you.
If you succeed, you'll move on to the next track, and so forth, and so forth...
Here's a gameplay video that might give you a better idea:
(and watch the bits of the track that are white: those are the markers where you should do the button presses)

WARNING:
Lots of F-Bombs, so probably not for the faint-hearted...
@ThanosReXXX Thanks for posting that video it really gave a good feel of how ace this could be. I really hope they go all out with the HD rumble stuff, I've been loving how they've used it in Mario Kart.
I've no idea what that was all about, but it looks awesome!
@TommyRabbit You're welcome.
@Curlynob I posted a gameplay video in comment #9, might give you a better idea.
Why does this game have so many good reviews? Guess I'll give it a try.
@ThanosReXXX Rails.. in space? Whatever next!?
Edit: Might look like the 3 seconds before a train accident to some... to those who get the reference it makes sense.
@DanteSolablood The Hype train for E3, THAT'S what's next!
@ThanosReXXX thanks! It looks insane - and definitely something I could get into.
I quite like rhythm games, but probably not one to play to relax just before bed.
@BezBot presumably because it's good.
See, I'd be happy to give this a whirl BUT the lack of Bluetooth support kills it for me. The onboard Switch speakers do the job but aren't stellar. I've tried using my headphones in wired mode and it's just annoying, the wire can distract your hand when playing in handheld mode.
It looks good, they have corrected the aim with this video. Previous one was dull. Now they could have actually done just a gameplay video to make it more understandable by people.
But Nintendo Switch actually need a rating system to make good games actually shine in favor of the bad ones in the eShop. Like Steam.
A star system (1 to 5) would be actually perfect.
Couldn't understand the gameplay 🤔
Looks really flashy and all, but what about the gameplay? Totally don't have a clue.
Thumper is one of the best games ive played on psvr as far as gameplay is concerned. It's the perfect title to play in handheld mode.
@H_Hunter @big_bad_bob In case you guys want to know: How the game plays and what you have to do, is explained in the video I posted in comment #9. My comment itself also explains a bit of the game.
@Tetsuro Good idea, that star system. Would be a perfect fit for Nintendo, what with their Star Catalog history...
(as well as a lot of their games containing stars)
This looks much better than the other trailer Nintendolife posted. Still unsure whether this is for me, however, as I'm not big on rhythm games.
I missed out on this with PS4, so I am so stoked to finally get it on the Switch! I want to keep watching gameplay but I don't want to spoil it for myself!
Really really excited for this one.
i think i get it now. the other trailer was hard to watch for some reason
I actually had this on my Steam wishlist, I love rhythm games, and I saw Jacksepticeye play this on Youtube. Didn't expect this one to head over to Switch. (now I'm hoping for Oxygen Not Included, which is likely anyways since Don't Starve made it to Wii U)
They really need to put a little more thought into the actual titles of these games. "Thumper"? Thats a horrible name. lol. Is this a game about Bambi's sidekick tripping on acid?
I could play this in VR if I wanted. But no thanks, not a rhythm guy. Great graphics, though, would surely distract me from whatever it is that you do at this game.
@ThanosReXXX Thank you for posting! That definitely gave me a feel for it!
Where's that Homer drooling gift when you need it?
@Bender1001 You're welcome!
@electrolite77 You mean this one?
@Darius_Truxton OR: it's a thumping space beetle, thumping to the rhythm of the beat, might that be where the name comes from?
There actually are beetles in real life that make a thumping noise, which can be heard by humans if they do it in groups. In several countries, stories are known of people experiencing weird "knocking" noises coming from their walls, only to find after looking inside that there were whole groups of these beetles nestled inside, working together to create those sounds, so it isn't really all that weird to think of a beetle making sound or music.
@ThanosReXXX It's just that a cool trippy game like this should have a cool name. Not Thumper. That just sounds lazy and unoriginal. It also reminds me of Bambi
I'd play a demo, but I'm not sure I'd ever buy this. It's just a very simple game mapped to some indistinct visuals and action scene music. A rhythm game without either popular music or a self-defining original soundtrack like any other game is just button pressing to me.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's obstensibly a rythym game. 4 directions and a button to navigate down the track. The obstacles come down in a audible pattern and once you get good you can look down the track to see where they're dropping.
This is one of my favorite games last year (PSVR), will definitely double-dip on Switch.
@Haru17 The music in this game is amazing. It's like doom metal on syncopated, primal beats. It's almost frightening, but when you're in the groove and on top of the beat it gets you so pumped.
There's a ton of reviews (85 on Opencritic) for the PC/PS4 version - no need to speculate. It's an incredible game, there's nothing like it, and bar any serious performance issues will be the best rythym game on Switch until maybe Taiko drops.
EDIT: 60FPS confirmed on dev Twitter.
@Indielink That's why I will check it out when it comes to Switch, but by looking at gameplay it doesn't look like anything special to me. This has also occurred with other games such as Shovel Knight...
@KIRO I just got a bluetooth reciever on Amazon for 15 bucks. Problem solved.
@Spiders I was speaking in regard to my own tastes. Metacritic scores make objectively incredible games to Metacritic people, of which I am not one.
And good or bad performance doesn't shift my opinion on a game one iota. I just do not see a reason to spent $20 and my time to play a game that's literally about pushing buttons and nothing more mapped to some neat, indistinct music. I would even have trouble buying a Daft Punk or System of a Down rhythm game, and that's music I actually care about. I just need more to a game to ever justify spending time with it, pulse-pounding or not.
@Darius_Truxton Well, obviously we can't all like the same things and they as developers also can't please everyone, so fair enough I guess that you don't like the name, but I wouldn't be surprised at all that the example I gave is at least part of the inspiration for how they came up with the name.
And the music also has a thumping beat, so in my view, they've done a decent job of theming the game as a whole to fit that idea of beetles and making sounds on a beat.
And what is cool? It's a bit of a hard rock/metal rock kind of game, with tough beats, and thumper fits the bill of a tough name as well, it kind of reminds me of an excavator or a big truck/car, like a Humvee or something...
So, I don't think it's lazy at all, and I definitely don't think they had Bambi or rabbits in mind, but then again: that's just my opinion...
@ThanosReXXX
That's the fella
@electrolite77 Glad I could help.
@ThanosReXXX Man, this got my heart pounding so hard (in a good way), but this game is not for me. I just suck really hard at rhythm games.
@maceng Me too, but I love the vibe of this one. The only rhythm games I played for a longer period of time and which I was reasonably good at, were the Donkey Konga games. And Jungle Beat was reasonably entertaining as well.
@Haru17 I was using Metacritic juat to speak to a) the quality - wether it's your taste or not, it does a very good job accomplishing what it sets out to do, and b) there is PLENTY of discussion, previews, reviews, videos, etc. of Thumper - it is a known quantity and you don't have to speculate just do some homework.
@ThanosReXXX agreed. Thumper is a badass name once you understand the premise. Something too self-serious or on the nose would ruin the vibe.
