Some of us older cynics roll our eyeballs out of their sockets when Nintendo games insist on wrist straps for Wii Remotes and, now, Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers. Yet the plastic strips they're attached to are quite handy for adding a little extra body to the controller, along with more easy-to-use shoulder buttons.
These add-ons are perhaps a little fiddlier than most aspects of the Switch, with Nintendo even resorting to producing guides for attaching and removing the darn things.
In any case, if you want the plastic grip but not the strap, our video man Alex has put together a little guide to help you reach that utopia of game control.
First world problems, and all that.

...Why? Is it really such a big deal to have wriststraps on controllers that you would have to remove them? I mean, it's not like they even get in the way when you're holding the controller...
@Darkhound1999 My elder brother was like that. Always had to remove the grip and wrist strap off of any wiimote he used.
Of course, he also broke a small lamp during a round of tennis when he accidentally threw it...
The wrist-straps are really an amazing feature. Combined with the split-controller nature of the joy-con the switch works amazingly on fitness equipment like the Precor elliptical I use it on. Without wrist straps this would not work.
It's not the straps that bother me, it's getting the damned plastic strip unattached. Really fiddly, so much so that I rarely bother with them.
I'd rather have an annoying strap over a broken TV.
I don't understand why the grips can't detach smoothly with the button release like when you remove the joy-cons from the side of the Switch. Like @Milton_Burle says, I rarely bother with them because they're such a pain to wrestle off.
Reminds me of trying to play Wii Sports and getting slapped on the arm by the wrist strap. I simply put it on afterwards, I feel no need to remove them.
I'm surprised this is being pointed out so far after launch; I removed the straps and lock tabs around a week after I got my Switch. It makes the joycon + shoulder button attachment far more comfortable to hold sideways without them (and while using dual joycons) and it is WAY easier to attach and remove them. I probably would've stopped using them near launch if I hadn't done this.
And for those worried about a broken T.V., hopefully you're joking. Movements with the motion controls are way too subtle to go flying out of your hands. If you're moving your hands that fast you're being extremely overly-dramatic with motions.
i am not going to remove the straps from the Joy-Con controllers. no need to do so.
however, i have done so with the wiimote. the wrist straps on them are way too easy to remove and plus i needed the wrist strap for something else.
@Darkhound1999 Actually the straps do get in the way. If you're holding the joycons sideways with the straps on then the straps are inevitably going to be under either of your index fingers. Rather annoying.
I simply resent being forced to be safe. If I want to chuck the summummab I will !!! Stop guiding my safety decisions Nintendo!!! I choose to be unsafe!!! It's the fools around me you should force to buy a Nintendo safety helmet!!!
Only a toddler or a monkey would throw them unintentionally anyway.
This is old but then some Switch owners are new and ignorant.
@Priceless_Spork Considering I mostly use the joycon without the strap clips attached, I'd say they ARE letting us choose!
@jswhitfield8 Yeah, I was thinking the same
@NEStalgia
So why do they care?
I was joking anyway. I'm not as analytical as you.
@Urameshi Really? I find that holding it sideways, I have the thumbs on the face buttons, indexes on the sl/sr buttons, middle fingers supporting the controller with the strap fitting snugly in the bend of my fingers. Meanwhile my last two fingers are holding the strap so that it doesn't waggle around or mess with my other fingers. Holding it like that makes it feel perfectly fine and comfortable to me at least.
Edit: After a little more testing, it feels like you can also just set the strap over your index, also alleviating issues of it getting in the way.
what a hassel to bloody remove them what was wrong with wii system
When I got Switch, I will treat my Joy cons carefully and probably play with no wrist strap.
@Anti-Matter
No strap? You must be crazy person. Or a dangerous rebel.
@Priceless_Spork
Not crazy. It called Insane.
But I will use my Joy cons attached on Switch for Mostly when I play Normally. Only games like ARMS or 1 2 Switch I might use Strap to avoid Frisbee Joy Cons flying into my TV. XD
I hate these things, they always feel like theyre gonna break my joycon. On a side note probably related one of my left joycons no longer snap into place because the peice of plastic is broke now.
Naked Joycon is all one needs. They feel perfect naked- not a fan of any strap add one. Although for sideways play, the Surge Grip Kit is a must (and not one of those knock off brands either- has to be Surge aka Stealth for EU)
I don't really like the feel of the wrist straps, don't feel right to me. Also I don't have much trouble getting them on and off. I don't use them.
I have never used the Joy-con strap attachment after having my Switch for over a month. I put them out of eye sight when I unpacked my Switch and never felt the need to touch them again. Perhaps I should try them and see what all the fuss is about, who knows, I may actually prefer it.
The music in those videos give me the strong urge to be a dating simulator protagonist.
This weekend I'm going with nekkid Joy-cons. All the strap does is space out my short and stubby fingers so they can't reliably hit the all-important target switching buttons. (which is my Achilles Heel right now in 3 and 4 player fights)
I always took off the straps on the Wiimotes, until a buddy flung one at the TV, but luckily, nothing broke. This was right when the Wii came out.
I've never taken them off since! At least when someone else plays.
@jswhitfield8 how good is spending a fiver btw
"Children...and things like that"
Lol, that made me laugh.
Just dont complain when you threw the joycon into your tv during an ARMS session
