Mario Kart 8 had one major flaw that nearly everyone agreed on; the battle mode was rushed and whilst mechanically it was fine the recycling of small tracks as playgrounds as opposed to purpose-built arenas was a tremendous shame.
Thankfully that's a thing of the past with the new maps in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch, and if you'd care to rise your gaze upwards just a smidgen you'll see a video showcasing all eight of them.

The removal of proper battle arenas destroyed MK 8 on Wii U, but 5 balloons? abit excessive i feel
All aboard the Hype train
Just like Splatoon 2, MK8D is nothing more than a glorified DLC pack uprezzed in 1080p.
Can't hate on Nintendo for trying to maximize profits on their IPs but as a day 1 Wii U owner, I'm not taking the bait.
@Tsurii "They have to pull the plug on MK8 Wii U's online racing for me to even consider getting the port "
Please believe this day is coming. There's precedent here (pulling the plug on MKWii online before MK8 released).
@gatorboi352 I'd disagree with you on the Splatoon 2 notion on the grounds that there is only so much they can do to make it an official sequel without changing core mechanics and irritating its huge fanbase. And by fanbase, I'm referring to the people continued to play the Splatoon from the day it released right up to now.
Besides, they changed specials, added more customization options, changed/added weapons (so far, from what we can see), added new stages, and have a new story campaign ready for us. We were also recently introduced to a new mode for those who aren't as competitive as their peers... And you're seriously gonna call it 'glorified DLC'? That hardly sounds fair.
@gatorboi352
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe = Mario Kart 8 + Double Dash (2 items) + Splatoon + Proper Battle Modes (with 5 different Rules).
I have the Wii U version first, but I WILL Double Dip for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe because I know it's NOT EXACTLY 100% Same games.
You can keep saying double dip is pointless or it just only sells for Nintendo fans or whatever, but Who Cares ?!
Your pessimism will NEVER Stop me or other people to Buy this version.
@Anti-Matter I can't understand how it equals double dash. I thought two items was also there in Mario kart 7 or even back
Run that.
Best Mario Kart ever released. 48 tracks, 8 battle arenas, 5 battle modes, 4 CC cups (200cc was worthless on Wii U since you went so fast you couldn't stay on the track while turning- now we can break drift, problem solved), 2 items, 3rd drift boost, drive assist (good for motion with the wheels) and all of it as a home console game and handheld game, with 2 controllers ready for MP any time.
I love it.
@UK-Nintendo
Huh ?
Double items on Mario Kart 7 ?
Nope.
Double Dash (Gamecube) introduce Double Items.
@Anti-Matter I meant you can hold a item and get another item.
@JaxonH break drifting was also possible on Mario kart 8
@UK-Nintendo
Are you for real?
Please don't tell me this whole time I hated 200cc for nothing lol
@JaxonH lol. Your joking right
@UK-Nintendo
Of course I'm not joking, why would I be joking?
@JaxonH I find 200cc unplayable without braking
@UK-Nintendo
Ya! The idea of it was exciting but in practice it was just too fast to stay on the course. I saw them saying drifting while breaking is a new addition here, and that's exciting cause it was a major problem for me.
I am curious why they're advertising it as a new feature though if it's not. Maybe they mean unlocked from the start and for all CC modes rather than just 200cc?
Well, at least it'll be there now, and I actually know about it. Was always wondering why ppl loved 200cc so much...
@JaxonH I hate 200cc. After I 3 starred it, I stay away from it. 150cc is perfect balance.
@UK-Nintendo
I ONLY dare to try 200 cc on Baby Park (LOL), Thwomp Ruins and Animal Crossing (Any Seasons).
Rainbow Road (Space Station) was a Nightmare in 200 cc.
@Anti-Matter 200 cc is all about braking. Braking and braking
I adored 200cc! There was so much finesse invovled & great new shortcuts to access. Granted, on my first outing with it, I felt like it 'broke' the game, but I just had to train myself to lay off the accelerator. Most imortantly, choose a vehicle with great acceleration and Terrible speed...you'll be going fast enough.
@gatorboi352 this is exactly how I feel if they would give current Mario Kart 8 owners on Wii U like verified somehow if they would give us like a discount or something then I would be much more happy to buy a switch but I just don't like having to replace all my games that I paid for and worked perfectly fine on the Wii U kind of sucks.
@gatorboi352 um Splatoon 2 is doing the same thing many shooter series have been doing for years. And they can call those games sequels.
@ShadJV I'll tell you one thing it's not doing, and is super core and basic to the entire genre: the ability to change your load out in the pre-game lobby screen. Nintendo always gonna Nintendo.
@UK-Nintendo There's a lot of braking, but if you use small characters, it's very manageable. I play 150cc with either Tanooki Mario or Pink Gold Peach, but 200cc, I drop down to Lakitu and change my kart config completely.
It's definitely worth playing, but holding the accelerator and brake at the same time during a drift will save you a LOT.
@nuff64 yea. I use bowzer but for 200cc you have to use light drivers. Toad for me.
@Bunkerneath I think that we should be able to choose the number of balloons we wish! It should also be possible to play with just three human players! I hate the battle mode in Mario Kart Wii because they forced you to play with all the CPU drivers!
No Block Fort, no deal!
@Phantom_R I'm still gonna play the mess out of this game, but MAN Block Fort would have sealed the deal.
So will this game get 10/10 because of battle mode now?
@Danrenfroe2016
Why should I sell my Mario Kart 8 Wii U for Switch version as replacement ?
I want BOTH of them.
I will not sell my Nintendo games whatsoever.
It's not about which is cheaper or which is worthy.
Regardless of their prices, if I like Both of them, I will buy Both of them.
@Mattiac Besides that, MK Wii also forced you to play on teams in points-based matches, while most of the arenas, even the retro ones, really sucked. Disappointingly, we're still forced to play for points here, but at least this time the balloons actually mean something with the penalty you get for loosing them all.
@Anti-Matter I don't want to sell my Wii U copy either I just wish Nintendo would give loyal customers that bought it the first time on the Wii UA discount on the switch version.
At 5:14...
@BulbasaurusRex I had forgotten about the stupid teams. I hate forced teams!
