The DK Rap is iconic, well known for being pretty awful while also being loved by plenty of retro gamers. It was typical Rare, and so the freshly revealed Yooka-Laylee rap is perhaps 'typical Playtonic'.
It's no secret that many of the leading developers in the Playtonic team have lucrative histories at Rare, and with Yooka-Laylee being a spiritual revival of the N64 days of collect-a-thon platformers, it's no surprise that nostalgia is a big part of the release.
And so we have the Yooka-Laylee rap, nicely time for April Fools' Day and given its debut at EGX Rezzed in London.
If you need a reminder of the DK rap, check that out below.
Wonderful and awful all at once - it's a weird idea that we're glad to see make a comeback.

This rap is the best and worst thing I have ever seen all at once.
Oh golly gosh. I'm not sure what to think of this new "hip-hop" thing. It seems frightfully loud.
Wow I really loved this! I totally felt the DK rap vibes!
I've never cringed so joyfully before!
For those who aren't aware, this DK-Rap parody was actually one of the stretch goals from the Kickstarter two years ago. I'm glad to see it's finally come to fruition!
Mentioning Playtonic doesn't exactly fill me with happiness like it used to.
Yooka (the green one) is the male character?! I thought it was female all this time.
Well, at the very least I know now that Yooka is male and Laylee female. Always thought of it vice versa before lol.
Lol the vibe is perfect for both iterations. Straight up mid to late 80's DefJam. Gotta get my cds out.
Mama gonna knock you out!
Is this part of April's Fools too? I hate news in these day.
I'm a backer and looking forward to my switch copy, but yeah I just threw up in my mouth a little. I get the nostalgia but id rather they just kept working on the game hehe.
Love it can't wait for game! Really hope it's included and not an April fool!
This is awesome! just made me wanna get this game even more. Loved DK 64
Nowhere as good as the DK rap, but it was still really cool to see!
I did not bother watching the video so I guess I can't comment.
So bad it's still bad.
that was a long 3 minutes... but still cool.
Oh boy, Siivagunner is gonna have a blast with this one.
But where are the coconut guns?
...I'm starting to feel glad I never looked at the comment section of the last Yooka-Laylee post if things are getting this heated under a dorky rap clip.
Yooka dances the same way I dance!
@AlternateButtons Oh yeah. WORST thing about this game is removal of some youtuber for his controversial views and how the newest nintendo console that was kept quiet for long enough that has even big AAA developers have a hard time making original games that arent quick engine ports
This is unbearably bad for me.
...and I'm a big fan of the DK rap.
Yooka! Yooka-Laylee! Excited for this
@Maxz What is hilarious about the controversy is that even Jon himself downplayed the idea of it ever being a big deal
Whoa, whole lotta heat in the discussion instead of jokes about the rap...goes to show how upset people have been getting over the recent news, I guess.
I don't have a strong opinion about the JonTron stuff. Never seen his videos, haven't seen the controversial video. @AlternateButtons has every right to comment on that.
What has personally bothered me is that the game is a straight shot of N64/Rare nostalgia and was funded by backers for a Wii U release, and is now curbed for a port on Switch. I can understand why the Switch makes more sense than Wii U and I have commented about that before. I can understand why there might be some delay in getting it to Switch as they probably didn't get a devkit right away.
But it's still hard not to feel like the "Nintendo" backers are getting the shaft when everybody else is getting it first and no clear eta for the Switch version. I think this game runs on Unity, shouldn't be that big a project to port over. Now I'm wondering how well this game will sell on Switch, which really needs more games like this.
At least there's Snake Pass...
The cringe is strong with this one.
I don't appreciate the lyrics "nuts and bolts" in this rap considering what happened to a past IP some of them worked on.......
@speedracer216 I think that may have been the point. The whole rap had references and allusions to their past games
...wow. I'm sorry everybody, but this rap just didn't do it for me at all, though I'm still going to get the game.
The DK Rap, the game which I had fond memories of, was bad, I'll admit...but unlike this rap, I thought the DK Rap was bad in a good and entertaining way. Yooka-Laylee rap...is just bad...I mean, "bad" bad. My face didn't smirk a tiny bit for a chuckle throughout those three minutes
Can't imagine it ever achieving the status of the donkey rap, but kind of fun I guess
Meh. It's nothing special.
Just like the rest of the game it looks like.
Y cnt metroid crawl?
@Equinox I agree with you there. Their poor use of what is essentially invested money and lackluster delivery on promises is very concerning.
I feel bad for the people arguing back and forth over some YouTuber being removed and how "bad" this rap is. This rap is supposed to be bad, that's the point. I sure as hell am not letting any silly political discussion get in the way of my enjoyment of this game. I think it looks awesome!
@AlternateButtons Sorry. I'll say my piece without being a condescending jerk. The JonTron drama does not belong here, and honestly, I can't understand why people are choosing not to buy a game they wanted because of a decision the dev team made.
Look at Nintendo. Nobody's passing up Breath of the Wild because of any DMCA notices they've handed out last year, or a certain incident involving the Game Awards, as well as a few other poor decisions they made. What makes this any different?
Still looking forward to this game but wish Playtonic hadn't played the "Wii U isn't powerful enough" card when they were developing specifically for Wii U and using Team 17 to work on the PS4 and Xbone port.
Taking that into account, their explanation doesn't make much sense.
As for this JonTron bloke; I'm too old to care whether a YouTuber's voice is included or not, regardless of their personal views.
I watched the vids and came to comments to post my thoughts, the Rap was a Grand kind of badness. Instead I walked into a political BS catfight that's nothing to do with the article. Well I am out of here, I don't need a river of political BS running through my veins, I will leave you all to swim in it, enjoy
@NintySnesMan Just avoid any comments section for an article on the game. People refuse to drop the issue.
I just wanted to read comments about how cheesy the rap is...
@AlternateButtons if your enjoyment of a game is based on a Voice Actor, I think you need to re evaluate your outlook on life. So many people are using him as a way of venting their frustrations at the cancelled WiiU version. Seems to the way today, mass internet bullying to get your own way. Just move on.
CRINGE OVERLOAD!
DK rap was the one thing I hated about Donkey Kong 64!
There is much more guilty than pleasure in this song... XD
Now to hope Persona 5 holds up until the Switch version...
For a long time I thought I was the only one who appreciated the DK Rap; however, the version in Super Smash Bros. Melee was dreadful.
This is so cheesy...man I love it! Also, it's real catchy.
XD
Gotta leave that here because some people are badmouthing in such an overwhelmy way that it's making me sick.
Before the announcement of the switch move, everybody agreed that Yooka-Laylee looked fabulous. To this day the press is still on that line, speaking of YL as a true Rare revival. It's a kickstarter success for sure.
Then the port was announced and some people are calling playtonic "scamtonic" ? Let me tell you something. I bought the Wii U one year after it got released because I was hyped about Pikmin 3. There were some good games and so on, but it's a fact that the Wii U has been a major failure. The last games to be released on Wii U came out in march, this console is clearly dead and nobody is gonna buy anymore of it.
As of today, there must be so few people willing to buy the Wii U that releasing Yooka-Laylee on it could even be at loss. It's clearly not for Playtonic's profit to do so. I know it's hard to think from that point of view because it can seem disgusting, but it's not a good idea to release a game on Wii U as of today (not to mention than the kickstarter is dated of 2014, which was an era of hope for the Wii U).
Besides, most of the backers were die-hard Nintendo fans that certainly moved or will move on Switch. Playtonic offered to change the platform you wanted to play Yooka-Laylee on and if you don't have a Switch I'm pretty sure you still have a PC.
So basically, for most backers the only thing you'll lose will be to not be able to play YL on the gamepad, but instead on your PC or on the Switch.
Playtonic didn't scam anyone, they made the right choice to move onto what will give them the most success and sales. And sales are important if you want to continue making games, and making even better games. Do you liked 3D oldschool platformers ? Playtonic is pretty much the only one to do it if you don't count Nintendo. Yooka-Laylee looks great and promising, so you should certainly support them if you want more games like this.
And finally, about that JonTron stuff. I get that some people love that Youtuber, but honestly, his absence doesn't suddenly make of Yooka-Laylee a crappy game. Seriously, he only dubbed one character of the game. How could it be more ridiculous to judge Yooka-Laylee on one voice acting ?? The quality's still here.
So please, stop talking about that stupid mess. JonTron said things that were not compatible with Yooka-Laylee's image, which is to be a game for all audiences.
PS : Sorry for the messy answer, but i'm really getting sick at people going nuts for details.
Anyways, this rap really made me smile. It's ridiculous af, but that's what makes it amazing.
@Kizashi I'm surprised I read all that, but I couldn't have said it better!
It just amazes me they did this and I love them for it.
@Kizashi
"Before the announcement of the switch move, everybody agreed that Yooka-Laylee looked fabulous."
Everybody??? Like... everybody? I mean, there're seven billion people out there. I'm pretty sure someone, at least one of them, didn't think it looked "fabulous." I remember not thinking it looked fabulous. I thought it looked okay, and so far nothing about it looks fabulous. It looks like exactly what it is. The people who made Banjo Kazooie going and making another game like it.
I guess if over 60 million Americans are all racists because they voted for a white person instead of......... another... white person.... then yeah, EVERYBODY could have thought this game looked fabulous. Especially if a lot of those racist 60 million Americans put a brotha' into the highest position possible in this country. Or is it that racist has become a gender, and it's something people can transition between? Is transracist now a thing?
Ugh... >_<
Wonderland (UKS MIX) by X-TREME has better Rap than Yooka-Layle Rap.
Now, this is the Rap.
@G-Boy haha! Don't get me wrong, I still want the game. I'll just be buying it used so they don't get any money. This assuming they make a physical version for the Switch.
@AlternateButtons First, Playtonic didn't soil JonTron's name. In the eyes of the people, he did that himself. Not going further into that, because I'd rather keep this discussion as far away from politics as we can. Furthermore, unlike Nintendo, Playtonic didn't shut down ten years of someone's work, then deny him the honor of even being rewarded for it at an awards ceremony. In my opinion, that's much worse, but people didn't use that as an excuse to not support Nintendo when a shiny new game came out.
Second, Breath of the Wild may have been a bad example, and I do apologize if I didn't make my point very clear. My point is that people still buy Nintendo's games, even when the company pulls that kind of malarkey.
Hah I love the rap, it just needs someone to take it to the fridge. I'm waiting for the physical version of the Switch personally before getting the game, but I can't wait. It looks amazing.
Lol!
The song isn't bad at all but I was kind of hoping it would be a bit different from the DK Rap to set the game apart and give it a bit more unique flavour. It's basically the same song with some new instruments and lyrics so it plays into nostalgia a little too much maybe for me. I feel like they could have done more with it. Either way, can't wait to play it on the Switch later this year (hopefully soon!!!!) I'm really excited for its release!
Also, people writing how upset they are at politics entering this discussion are basically sharing their own political views so it feels a bit counter productive. At the end of the day, everything can be linked back to politics.
...Ugh, everyone hates Playtonic now...people in general just need to grow up. -.-
@Joeynator3000 I like Playtonic.
This Jon situation is making everyone freak out, though. I can simply say, "Oh well. Maybe next time.", and move on.
I just hope everyone can put Jafari aside and remember that Yooka-Laylee is supposed to be the next Banjo-Kazooie. I'm crossing my fingers that this won't feel like a spin-off of that series (Nuts and Bolts), but instead a revival.
Either way, I'm getting the Steam version 2 weeks after the game releases at the longest.
@Wandman5612 I just like Jon's videos, they're awesome...Removing his voice from this game sucks....but I'm not gonna avoid the game like the plague and call the devs the most horrible people on earth because of it.
@Joeynator3000 Same. At least I found someone who agrees with me.
I don't care if we have a constructive discussion about JonTron, but this constant back and forth will stop.
Yeah I'm kinda sick of seeing it on here, Youtube, and Twitter. T.T
Agreed.
Let's refrain from talking about race, regardless of your stance.
Y'all are being too hard on Playtonic and the game itself. This wasn't supposed to be serious it's all in good fun and people criticizing it are full of themselves. Also drop that stupid Jontron crap, he's an idiot for opening his mouth and if you're seriously going to boycott this then you're just a bad as he is.
@Fist_of_Belial As I've seen this past week, the comments to each other have become toxic.
As for "party lines", I truly do not care what your stance is. I didn't really care about JonTron's comments, nor Playtonic's reaction. However, the discussion of these things have become so toxic. Even the mention of JonTron sparked a debate that should not have happened earlier on this thread.
@Fist_of_Belial You aren't getting the point of TheLZDragon.
I'll just disappear back into another thread now. Goodbye!
@Fist_of_Belial Well, he/she is an administrator. Keeping even the comments family-friendly is his/her job.
I have really important opinions about bananas.
@Joeynator3000 Glad i'm not the only one who just want the game already! Crapping on a developer for removing a Youtuber cameo (which i didn't care for in the first place) is just nonsense. I cant wait to see what Playtonic does next!
lol, that ending. Close up on the Pagies and then fade out? Ok man, you do you.
@GothicZM Give the game some credit. It's got a snake in a bowler hat, come on. That's good for at least 6 billion, isn't it?
@Equinox All games are political. I get what you're saying, but Japan isn't some apolitical paradise.
(For example, I'm Catholic so I'm used to enjoying every second JRPG telling me that I'm the evil invasion force lol. Like, fair enough point Japan, but you can't say their games aren't political).
@Fist_of_Belial My comment was also deleted, but in all fairness, I was quite snarky and deliberately stirred the pot. I get it!
Glad to see that people are finally realizing the game really looks mediocre. It probably won't even run well on the Switch.
What poor decision will Playtonic make next?
My comment was deleted. Are you kidding me, NL? Your views on censorship are wildly distorted and egregious. Apparently, it is acceptable to call for genocide (see the other Yooka-Laylee article) but posting GIFs is going one step too far.
@JTMnM your right, theirs bigger problems to fight right now than gif's, so stop deleting comments which aren't offensive or rude, nothings gonna come out of it, theirs still some horrible comments still up which i am appalled by, which should be taken down; all i'm saying.
@Maxz Bananas are... interesting.
@World I was half-expecting Yooka to roll into the screen as a transition, like the explosion from DK64.
@JTMnM Your comment may have been deleted in a series of deletions related to the conversation. It may not have been the right place. Gifs placed in jest for less serious situations will not be deleted.
@JTMnM Well, GIFs are another huge source of debate. If people cannot pronounce it one way, the entire community gets in a debate and a YouTube star will be removed from 17 random, direct-to-DVD movies!
(Insert another sarcastic remark here.)
Anyway, the rap was very half-hearted. It didn't feel as cheesy as the DK Rap, and it just sought to copy it.
I'm still excited for the game since I haven't played a game like this since the 64 days.
Seriously though, we should move this "discussion" to a thread. Someone looking at the reactions for the Yooka-Laylee Rap will be seriously confused by this.
@TheLZdragon It was a stretch goal. At least they are delivering on promises (Mighty Number 9)...
I love it!
Where's the neo geo games
@Wandman5612 Haha, that would've been the golden banana (or whatever Yookas and Laylees eat instead--book pages apparently?) on top of the cake.
@Syrek24 Correction. The most qualified for the job should have their job. Unless personal views affect the company negatively (which in this game did with a popular Youtuber and I understand their decision on this) this is no grounds to fire a person. It might be fodder if the boss hated that person, but the boss won't do it until they slip up (source: MY DAD. Not racist in any means, but pissed off his boss. So the boss waited for an excuse to fire him). Did you watch his response video? I don't sub to the guy or watch JonTron but a few times on a whim. Yet I can tell when someone is acting condescending in an unjustified and biased way.
Please don't accuse people of things they say in the heat of the moment. We all say things we regret when frustrated and this is no different.
Also this goes without saying, treat a person separate from their works. I really really hate the Youtuber Endless Jess's views and opinions. Yet I still watch his videos on his parody channel "My Japanese Animes" because they are well made and hilarious.
If you are going to respond to my comment, please respond in a civil manner (aka don't be condescending, name call, be a decent human being). If I came off as condescending, I did not intend too. I wanted to question a stance that seems very questionable and have a nice discussion, not one of these "I'm right, you are wrong" discussions. I am open to change my opinion if you incline to convince me.
@Equinox
There had to be someone, eh? Grow up and stop using that stupid SJW blanket statement. Like there's a problem with wanting social justice or something.
@AlternateButtons I agree completely. I'm not saying the choices Playtonic made weren't stupid, because they definitely were, but I don't think those choices should impact one's decision to buy the game if they wanted to do so beforehand and are still able. Why screw yourself out of an experience that you know you'll enjoy in order to make a statement, you know? And I do sincerely apologize for being condescending yesterday. I really shouldn't comment on anything right when I wake up.
@Wandman5612 Mmm yeah I agree, however I heard that they can be dangerous if they are encountered in the wild.
Funny that everyone is still sour about the JonTron fiasco, when JonTron himself has moved on from it, especially since he was the perpetrator. Besides, he could've voiced a minor character of all things.
I just hope the game turns out to be good. At least I can play it on PS4 day1.
This is honestly way more cringeworthy and less fun than the original, and that had the excuse of being 20 years older and an original idea.
Also, the characters just aren't appealing, and trouser snake is just too much cringe. I actually like the earnest cheesiness and simplicity of the original, but they did a pretty terrible job with this parody.
How silly, if you have seen the dk rap even once it has been burned into your skull never to leave.
I can't believe people are cancelling their preorders over one voice actor being kicked and a jokey throwback rap.
@Mellon And Nintendo fans wonder why they have the reputation for being the most childish.
I thought it was funny, don't understand the heat.
I'm 100% against racism of any kind but its funny that the racists are not on my favorite site telling me how to think. SJW's should take notes. shut up. we don't care.
It's kinda catchy and awful at the same time/
@hendie001 Not really sure what websites you frequent, but both sides are pretty good at telling others how to think (even on NL if you dig far enough). Personally, I think the problem is polarizing and the "you're with us or against us" mentality that both "sides" employ.
Some of us just want to kick back and react to a fairly surreal rap about giant sentient paper and their animal slaves (if you turn the sound off, that's what it looks like).
The snake is called TROWZER.................... That my friends is gold, im sold.
In slightly unrelated talk, I thought Yooka was female and Laylee was male?I thought sure I remembered reading that...? Well, this is awkward
@gamermole Oh no.
RARE DOES IT AGAIN!
Let's be honest though, Playtonic basically is a lesser 90's Rare at this point.
