We've covered some of the best cases to protect your Nintendo Switch and only yesterday we took a look at WaterField's premium offerings. They may be lovely cases, but they might not be tough enough for everyone. This is where Pelican's affectionately named 1170 case comes in; this thing looks sturdy enough to withstand pretty much anything that could be thrown at it.
Of course Pelican is most known for making cases for demanding military, law enforcement and underwater applications. However, it likes to take a punt at the consumer market too when it spots a gap in the market.
Features of this mighty case include:
- Solid foam in the lid and custom cut foam in base of case
- Watertight, crush-proof and dust proof construction
- Double Throw latch system
- Automatic Pressure Equalization Valve
- O-ring seal
- Stainless Steel hardware and padlock protectors
- Two Padlock Eyelets
- Unconditional Lifetime Guarantee on the case (excludes custom interior)
- Contents not included
The case is available in black, olive green, orange, desert tan, silver and yellow and will set you back $70 (£56). Do you operate in conditions which might necessitate such a case to protect your beloved Switch? Let us know if you'll be picking one of these mighty cases up with a comment below.

I honestly regret buying my Hori case now
Prepping for nuclear war and want to bring your Switch along? We've got the case for you!
Wow I think you could literally chuck this off the top of a mountain and your Switch would be non the worse for wear by the time it reached the bottom!
@JHDK hope it comes with a portable charger.
Where is the added handcuffs so you can lock it to your wrist? I mean it looks so government issue with highly classified content. I'm sure it's one of those things that looks and costs 70$ but really goes for 1.2 million on the open market. 😉
For the survivalist in your life. Comes with car battery.
My Dad has one for his camera equipment, although it was worth it for lugging around nearly £10,000 worth of kit.
$70 is cheap for a legit Pelican case, though US prices are cheaper. If sold direct in the UK would be approx £70-£80.
NOW THE CONSOLE WARS REALLY BEGINS!!!
@JHDK @liljmoore Portable charger? It needs a portable power station if you want the system to last you through a nuclear war... and the years that follow.
@JHDK The closest thing to Fallout the Switch will ever get
Psst... that's Nintendo Top Secret.
Even Mimette from Sailor Moon S carries that bag.
Eh... Oopsie. Wrong bag.
@Menchi187 lol none cares about fallout unless your a 10 year old
Reasonably sturdy cases, managed to get a (basically) brand new one from work for the low price of... nothing.
The really question is how well it would protect my switch from a toddler?
@Slim1999 Well Nintendo loves getting old bethesda games so next year maybe the Switch will get Fallout 3 for the 10 year anniversary.
Oh and Fallout 4 has sold more in 16 months than Skyrim has in 6 years so I'd say you're wrong.
They should of added a long collapsible handle like for a bat...so if somebody tried to rob you, you could bludgeon them with the product they tried to take from you. Sweet irony.
This will come in handy should I ever take my Switch to Syria.
The ability to put a padlock (or two) on it is pretty intriguing. I'm loving the custom cut foam, too!
Reminds me of this old sketch.

Might get it. I love overbuilt cases, but I really want one like this that holds the grip as well. Never knew Pelican made cases of this caliber. Then again, maybe I'm thinking of the wrong Pelican haha.
I've been meaning to take my Switch to a fallout shelter, seriously though I love cases like this, but I'll probably wait until Technoskin makes something in between design, still usually stuff like this is worth the price
Pre-ordered for my solo transatlantic yacht trip...
Tempted but I walk in courthouses a lot. Worried I'll scare everybody...still tempted.
So, this is what the Secret Service uses for their games.
I have have 7-8 Pelican cases for photography equipment and other electronics, and I can tell you the quality of their cases is outstanding. I'm actually tempted to buy one for my Switch now!
I approve of this joke!
@Menchi187
"The closest thing to Fallout the Switch will ever get"
@Ryu_Niiyama Yes, its perfect when taking your Switch out in the battlefield. Never know when you'll get bored shooting real people and would rather shoot virtual ones.
@CosmicLight Hey, virtual blood is way easier to get out of the carpet and car upholstery... How do I know? Monopoly is serious business in my house.
There's no kill like overkill.
I like it but dare I say it's a bit on the overkill side. I'm using the case that came with the he Zelda special edition. Short of being run over by a car I think it's plenty good enough to protect my Switch.
@G0dlike I thought exactly the same thing! Think I'll have both now lol
Roll up to the airport with this and you're being gang tackled before the sliding doors by the taxis.
@Menchi187 comment of the thread right here. Shut it down, boys!
Can it withstand the stability of the 3DS's mere presence near the case?
Never have brought my Switch out of my house so won't get. Even if I did travel, I would not buy a $70. The only thing I bought a case for was my 2DS, and that was a $14.99 Nintendo one, and well my 2DS isn't broken yet!
Oh, i know Pelican very well because they make great DJ case, you know, for protecting DJ turntables and/or CD Players. Good to know they are into the video game industry, at least, protecting it.
Tempting, but I'm going to order a case from the same company that I bought my New 3DS case from.
@G0dlike no worries. If you decide to get the case in the future we'll still be making it. Might even be tweaking the design as Nintendo continues to the support the Switch!
@stylon From the peak of Death Mountain to the pipes of the Mushroom Kingdom, as we like to say!
@liljmoore The cavity below the case is 7.5" X 2.5" if you want to store a charger.
@FX102A Unfortunately, we currently only ship within the United States, but we're keeping an eye on demand overseas. Thanks!
@penfold007 The latches clasps pretty good, but I wouldn't under estimate the strength of a toddler. You can put a pad lock on the case if you need extra protection, though.
@SomeWriter13 Thank you!
@TossedLlama If you wanted to customize the foam yourself, I'd recommend going with the case with Kaizen foam as it is more customizable than the Pick N Pluck foam, though you will have to cut it: http://www.thepelicanstore.com/pelican-1170-case-1148.aspx
This is actually how I made the prototype for the case.
@audiobrainiac We're currently working on a larger case to hold the console, dock, grip or pro controller, racing wheel, extra joycons, and lots of games. I'll reach out to NintendoLife when its ready to launch.
@BlueKnight07 It does come with a sticker which makes it look a little more fun?
@BornInNorway81 That's the exact reason we made one. I love the cases for my other equipment. Didn't want the Switch to feel left out.
@Kamikawa4 To be honest I got on your store and saw your laptop briefcases, too. I am considering replacing the one I got with one of yours, maybe customizing the foam to hold a laptop and Switch too. Need to do measurements. Might as well go all out.
Sounds cool. I recommend laying everything out on a table how you want them to organized in the case and then taking some measurement to determine which size case you want. Of the laptop cases, the 1495 is the biggest. We're also working on a bigger case to store the console, dock, pro controller, etc. Hopefully should have the production prototype next week!
@Kamikawa4 yay!
@Kamikawa4 more power to you!
@Kamikawa4 U know what would be awesome? Having a case like the 1095 hardback thats more flat of a layout, so it could still fit in my pack. I like the protection of the case, but don't necessarily want to advertise carrying a valuable device around.
We've looked a doing a case in a thinner model and the clam shell cases like the 1095 are too thin to provide any meaningful foam protection for the Switch. The 1170 was the best option balancing form factor and protection.
