We've been looking forward to Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap ever since it was first announced. Based on the classic 1989 Sega Master System game Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, this remake features all-new hand-drawn visuals, a re-orchestrated soundtrack, and the ability to switch in real-time between the original retro graphics and the modern remake.
DotEmu has revealed in a press release (excerpt below) that the game will be released on the Nintendo Switch on 18th April. It has also teased a surprise announcement which is due to be revealed on 22nd March. How intriguing!
Boasting beautiful, hand-drawn animations and a re-orchestrated soundtrack, the cult classic returns with a unique blend of exploration, action, and adventure. Play as Lizard-Man, Mouse-Man, Piranha-Man, Lion-Man, and Hawk-Man, and use their unique abilities to uncover the land's deepest secrets. Switch in real-time between the original retro graphics and the visually stunning modern remake, and input your old Sega Master System passcode to unlock all of your old saves and progression – just how you left them in 1989.
Stay tuned, a last surprise will be announced on March 22nd!
Are you looking forward to this retro remake?

The Switch has no games, but I already need to make choices because there aren't enough hours in a year to play all those games.
Also : Secret Amiibo ? Or special feature for the Switch ?
Yes i'm looking forward to it .... but only if physical copy. If not, maybe yes, maybe no.
I'm in like Flynn!!! 😃😃
I'd never heard of this game before the remake was announced, but it looks fun. I'll be picking it up for sure!
Game caught me off guard. Looks excellent. A definite buy
Interesting. I haven't played a Wonder Boy game even when I owned a Sega Master system. I'll check this out.
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
@YeshaYahu5417 You hethen! Wonderboy III was the best game on the Master System and Wonder Boy in Monster Land wasn't too far behind it. The original was good fun too but not in the same league as the other two.
@Nashew
Old school my friend, old school
Marvellous! Day one purchase for me!
My birthday. Nice.
yes definetly want this! hopefully its not too expensive
Looks wonder-ful.
Been looking forward to this for ages.
Cannot wait.
I can't wait for this. My Switch will be a nostalgic powerhouse when Wonder Boy joins Blaster Master and Bomberman.
Marked in my calendar! This is gonna be a day one buy for sure, as the original is among my Master System favorites.
Now, if only we'd get a Land of Illusion remake...
@BionicDodo Look Esau! Wonder Boy was your personal favorite that I didn't get a chance to purchase. My favorite games I was playing for Master System was The King Fu Kid, Black Belt, Double Dragon, Zillion 2, Quartet, Outrun, Space Harrier, Astro Warrior, Hang On, Afterburner, Shinobi, Ghost Busters, and many others. Those were my favorite/best games.
Absolutely looking forward to this! This is how I wish they would have treated the Blaster Master remake. Im not a fan of 8.5 bit graphics. We're in the HD era. We don't need to be skimpy on graphic quality. 8.5 bit gpx like shovel knight and the like (to me at least) = lazy, cheap or untalented art direction in the guise of "retro".
Day one for me. Can't wait!
I wonder if the surprise announcement is the acquisition of the property from Sega?
@YeshaYahu5417 It's funny isn't it how two people can own the same console but have a completely different set of games. The only game out of your list that I really played a lot of was Shinobi. I have played all of them since via emulation though.
My top games (other than the Wonder Boys) were R-Type, Ys, Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, The Lucky Dime Caper, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Shinobi, Psycho Fox, Fantasy Zone 1 & 2, Sonic 1 & 2, Master of Darkness, Powerstrike 2, Ninja Gaiden, California Games, Phantasy Star, Asterix, Gauntlet, Robocop vs Terminator, Miracle Warriors, Impossible Mission and Ultima IV.
To be fair though, the WBIII thing isn't just my opinion. It was the highest rated game by most Sega magazines at the time and frequently comes out top in retrospective articles about the Master System. I highly recommend picking up this game and seeing for yourself.
I've never played any of this series because I never had a Sega system growing up. This game looks magical and special, and I am excited to play it. Glad it's coming so soon too.
Physical would be sweet but I'll grab it digitally if need be. Looks so good.
This was one of my favorite, and most memorable games on the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine. It went by the name Dragon's Curse, and the sounds and music are deeply burned into my memory. When I watched this trailer some time ago it took me straight back, but I couldn't place the name Wonder Boy to anything I was intimately familiar with. Then it clicked, and I realized what this was a remake of. Needless to say I'm super excited for this!
I hope there's a physical version.
Wow this AND Sonic Mania this year, it's like Christmas! Definitely a very good fit for the Switch too.
Another game to buy. I'm beating Zelda first.
@pandarino And the spiritual sequel to the Wonder Boy games, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, is coming soon too.
@BionicDodo One person's opinion, even if others agree and it becomes a "popular opinion", does not make it fact for everyone.
As I commented earlier, I do plan to dlc purchase this game since I haven't played the original. Back in the day I had quite a few friends who also owned a Sega Master System, and it's funny cause none of them bought into Wonder Boy either. Alex Kid... But not WB. None of us hated it, but just didn't buy into. There's a lot of popular classic games I didn't play. So, it's cool to see some of these older companies remastering games from the 80's. I highly enjoy retro games. I'm looking forward to finally play WB.
Excellent, can't wait, really looking forward to this one
Nintendo. My wallet is trying to recover...leave it alone.
@Uranux I'm the same way. I'd be all over a physical release. It physically pained me to purchase the Shovel Knight Treasure Trove. I have no doubt I'll end up purchasing it AGAIN when there is a physical release.
I've been watching this game's progress for a long time from it occasionally popping up on my twitter feed. I t looks worth the look for me when it comes out, that hand drawn art is looking sooo good.
Loved this as a kid on the Master System so will definitely be picking this up, I really want this on Switch but the lack of a d-pad is putting me off these types of games at the moment so may have to get for PS4
Special Surprise: Switch owners get the privilege to pay $10 more than other console/PC players! You lucky devils!
Game is looking sweet though, I'll definitely be sure to pick this up. Seems a good fit for the Switch.
I Vaguely remember the name wonder boy(never had a sets console, but a friend did). Of course it took me by surprise that this looks like fun. I wish wish wish it would get a physical copy. I hate digital downloads. With all the digital games coming to he Switch I think I'll end up breaking down and getting a couple.
How totally rad! And I didn't even game on the Master System, but I love retro gaming.
This is coming out much sooner than I anticipated which is awesome! This is one of the games I've been incredibly pumped for! Bring it on!
For EU PS4 owners, you can already preorder this game and get a 20 % discount! http://www.thedragonstrap.com/blog/post/201703_ReleaseDate/
For anyone who hasn't played the original do yourself a favour and pick this up, if it had been on the NES it would be considered an all time classic. IMO it's the best game on the Master System, or at least out of the games i've played. No real flaws for it's time.
Fantastic, I love those HD 8-Bit quality graphics.
@Kevlar44 I cant' agree more.
I finished it recently and it was amazing as I remembered it!
Also, if the surprise is a physical edition I'll need like 40 of them.
I want to build a tiny door with the cases, mount a speaker on it with the in-game sound and open it at least 100 times a day.
I love this game.
I love it so much.
The surprise is the game costs $40. 😉
Looks fun!
