With the relative closeness (on a technical level) between the two versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, early curiosity around the Switch has focused on how much of a boost it truly offers over Wii U. It's evidently not an enormous leap, but it's not necessarily been fair to characterise it as a portable Wii U, either.
Of course, with all systems it takes time for developers to get 'close to the metal', as such, and extract maximum performance. An early indicator of what the Switch can do compared to Wii U is out there though, with Shin'en's FAST RMX. This studio has proven masterful at making Nintendo hardware sing and did impressive things with FAST Racing NEO on Wii U - now Digital Foundry assesses the upgrade of the remixed release on Switch.
All told it's a notable improvement, with the studio evidently enjoying the resources available to them in the Switch.
It's a positive result, and Digital Foundry was also relatively pleased with the Switch version of I Am Setsuna.
Let us know what you think of the performance of these games in the comments.

Switch booost. Who needs Fzero
@Dakt 3? I got it for my WiiU and Switch what else it on? Lol
@UK-Nintendo I do. Because FAST is based around the polarity mechanic. F-Zero is based around energy management. I want more of the latter. Preferably with a metal soundtrack F-Zero X had.
Boy , this is just the beginning of what we as devs can do on the switch , in the next few years we will create a great game
To be honest, I don't know if I really need games to look much better than FAST Racing RMX. It's the perfect balance of visuals and performance for me.
@HyliasHero I agree with the soundtrack but I can't see it happening. Can you ?
Tried it on both and honestly the Wii U version runs better, after some talk with others folks I came to the conclusion it is because of the AMD chip. Nvidia has some problems at the moment.
@SuperSaltDave64 I agree. The other folks do know their stuff
@SuperSaltDave64
Lol, need a tissue again over that AMD
To wipe away those AMD tears.
Well that video shows Switch version is superior in just about every possible way.
Even in portable mode, the game out classes the Wii U release. That's still crazy to think about. Just how tiny the Switch is, yet so powerful.
It's much better on Switch than Wii U. I don't know how people can think otherwise. To each their own, I suppose.
ya know why it's better on switch?....Cause i can take this great game with me and PLAY it at work on break..
Said it before. Fast devs should make a F-ZERO and a Mario Kart,sometimes a franchise needs new talent to push it further. I know MKD is coming soon but would be great to get a new edition much further down the line,afterall 8 million have already bought MK on wii u,would be great for everybody really and while am at it let's see another Metroid Prime from Retro and another Devils Third
Wow, that video really hits home just how talented the Shin'en team is. Bought this on Wii u but only played for 30 mins or so, just didn't get into it. Deserves a second chance on Switch, I guess.
WiiU was outdated the day it was released. Not a bar the Switch should try and match.
It is still a most excellent game! Got it day one without question and regret nothing! Haven't had the chance to try split-screen yet so glad to know it keeps 60fps this time
OK I am bloody fed up now, how the hell do I get a avatar,looked all over place and can't see anything that will let me have one.. Pulling my hair out and stamping on my other foot in frustration.. HELP
@NintySnesMan lol. All you do is go to setting on your profile and attach a pic
@UK-Nintendo
When I go into profile there is no option to attach avatar or am I missing something
@NintySnesMan I'm using a iphone so its safari. Look for account settings not profile
The only thing holding me back is the lack of a physical retail release. I skipped the Wii U release as the Switch was just around the corner, and I didn't think that I would get much mileage out of it (no pun intended).
~AU$30+ for digital games is just way too high (at least at the regularity that games are being released at that price range). There's VOEX, Fast RMX and Snipperclips that I'm keen on, all of which are about AU$30. I'd've been happy to pay, say, AU$60 for retail versions of these games as I don't like the idea of paying big bucks for games that are locked to a console.
Bought it this morning due to the hype and reviews it has garnered over the past week. Great game.
Great to hear.
This game + Amiibo enabled (Especially F-Zero amiibos) = F(AST)-ZERO RMX
I don't own the switch but that must look amazing on the portable screen. Shin'en are incredibly talented developers.
This comparing last gen to this gen is beyond pointless.
shin'en's been around since the gba? wow. something tells me that their indie status is by choice. they've likely been made offers already.
I'm sorry but how is this an indication of the power of Switch? We're talking about an indie game here. And comparing it to a console that has the power of an Xbox 360.
If anyone is impressed by Switch's power, they clearly haven't played on a non-Nintendo console within the last 5+ years.
Sure as a portable it's impressive, but even NintendoLife's own staff are checking back in after a week talking about how they tend to just leave the console docked.
@JaxonH it's especially impressive when you consider that nintendo themselves couldn't optimize their own first party flag bearer zelda from it's wii u origins to the switch. the performance difference between zelda wii u and switch is miniscule and near nonexistent compared to neo and rmx.
@Jamotello
I think that's mostly due to being open world. A jump in resolution on Zelda takes far more to accomplish than the same jump in say, a game like this.
But ya, it is impressive nonetheless. Shinen set the bar with this one
Lovely looking game. The Switch represents such an upgrade on Wii U it's nice when the games do too. When the first games on a machine are comfortably beating out late-in-life games on older machines, it's a good sign. Kudos to Shin'en
@gatorboi352 Um, the fact that it's pulling visuals and capabilities a lot better than a Wii U can (which in of itself is stronger than a 360) AND is made by an indie dev (not an AAA dev) AND is a launch title for the system shows just how important and impressive it is.
And while the Switch is not as powerful as a PS4, you really can't fit a PS4 in the space the Switch occupies. This does not take into account that the space the Switch occupies also includes a screen across the entire front if it, and a battery that's digs into almost half of what remains if the screen were taken off. If there were to be some version with no screen, no battery, and was kept plugged into the wall like a typical home console, that thing would be extremely small, you might mistake it for a portable HDD.
@gatorboi352 It's extremely impressive for what it is. Speaking as someone who owns both a PS4 and a significantly more powerful PC, playing Zelda on the tablet was the first real "Wow!" moment I've had this gen. Being able to play full console games anywhere with almost nothing in the way of compromises to sour the experience feels genuinely cool and impressed me in a way that a normal home console would never be able to.
@gatorboi352 if youre not impressed with the Switchs performance, its obvious you dont know how capable it is in the mobile market. Thats the whole point. And if your impressed by any console, its clear youve never played on PC
@Hordak I've been much more engaged on the switch version. maybe because of the visuals, but the HD rumble is the biggest impact
@gatorboi352 an xbox 360 would not run rmx at 1080/60
Game is amazing,loving it.
Switch is a huge upgrade over the Wii U in terms of power. Many developers are saying so.
Compared to PS4? I don't know. But PS4 is selling for $258 or something like that on Amazon right now. It is completely outdated and old, and $400 laptops can do better. Maybe Pro is stronger though, but PS4 at this point is pretty much junk. Even it's a little better than Switch, which I doubt, it's not portable, which is the only really good reason today to get a console in the first place rather than PC.
FAST Racing RMX sounds and looks great. Still, Mario Kart is likely going my go-to racer on the Switch.
@SuperSaltDave64 Did you really watch the video? And what's that crap aboud AMD and Nvidia. You don't have a clue if you think that the Wii U chipset is more powerfull than the Switch chipset. Plz educate yourself because commenting
Awesome
Never got it on the Wii U, but I'm glad that I got the Switch version. Has amazing visuals in both TV and Handheld mode.
I'm selling my physical copy of NEO for the same price that RMX cost me. Good deal if you ask me. Played around with this a bit earlier. Still can't believe that I'mplaying this game on what is basically a tablet. New tech really is something special.
@The-Chosen-one "@SuperSaltDave64
Lol, need a tissue again over that AMD
To wipe away those AMD tears."
Just give him the box, there'll be a lot of tears this year.
Fast Rmx really is stunning!
Just waiting for this to go on sale.
@Jamotello "Nintendo themselves couldn't optimize their own first party flag bearer zelda from it's wii u origins to the switch."
Zelda BOTW, being originally envisioned with the Wiiu's architecture in mind, was not meant to be a full showcase for the Switch, which is evident in the fact that there are no HD Rumble features, for instance. Aonuma wanted the experience to be the same across both platforms, which would prevent confusion and schedule constraints.
The important role for Zelda BOTW on the Switch was to showcase how well the flexible console could translate AAA gaming on the go. If you ask me, it succeeded. 😉
@gatorboi352
I think you under estimate the benefits to some users of Switch it's form factor versatility. Also its power use docked (less than 20w) is very low and portable is (less than 10w) even lower, especially for the visuals it can deliver.
Have you even played Z-Bot yet? It is to me one of the best games ever (wiiu as well). Visually it is impressive as anything on ps4, and yes I have ps4. But thru unique art direction N has created a visual and gameplay masterpiece.
Also Z-Bot shows that Switch can offer a compelling home/away game that looks and plays great in both formats. Other launch titles also do that well. Fast RmX impressive docked or portable. Setsuna same.
I think Switch is going to do well with the on the go crowd. I already have played zelda docked for dozens of hours on 47' hdtv, then played a lot of Setsuna handheld and Fast RMx and snipclips tabletop co-op while sharing joycons. It really is a versatile system and this is just the beginning.
@CircuitWrangler3 BotW is in an odd situation where it was requested by the higher-ups late into development of the Wii U version, so the team was split, and a focus on the Switch couldn't be done because they needed to make sure the Wii U version ran well enough. This is unlike Fast RMX, where the version it was based on was finished long ago, so Shin'en could focus on taking advantage of the Switch hardware.
They did make a jump from 640x720 @ 60fps with some drops in single-player (more drops in 2-player, then locked 30fps in 4-player) to full 1080p @ 60fps (albeit the flaw in firmware that caused a drain on GPU resources to prevent consistent 1080p), no frame drops, adding visual effects the Wii U version lacked, etc. That a good 4.5x pixel calculations for a system that is much smaller than a Wii U.
@NintySnesMan Hi, hope you don't mind me stepping in. To add an avatar, simply follow this link if you're logged in:

@Discostew the point you're missing is that this is about as good as it gets for Switch. So, yeah, if you own no other console whatsoever... Great.
But if you think it's going to better better than RMX? I dunno what to tell you.
Look, i too was once a NDF. But then i actually tried another console. There's so much more than Nintendo out there guys. Lift the blinders.
@CircuitWrangler3 i do agree with zelda's role as you mentioned. that's one of the jobs of a system seller after all. it was never a technical showcase as it doesn't use the showcase hardware feature of neither the wii u, nor switch. but for a small team at shin'en to vastly improve it's game for it's switch hd remake/port, then nintendo only mildly improve it's own with all their resource and access, shows that shin'en clearly went above and beyond.
@gatorboi352 I think most everybody here has a PS4. I'm very pleased with the Switch's capabilities as a handheld and quite content with it as a home console.
Nintendo did great things with the Wii U hardware and devs that don't mind optimizing for performance on the Switch should be able to turn out some great experiences.
Whether third parties bother to tinker with the hardware will be determined by how well the console sells over there next 8-12 months.
@gatorboi352 As it is already, Shin'en mentioned before that they aren't utilizing the system closer to its potential. Not because this is a launch title, but because they are working with a Wii U port.
And please. Don't pull that NDF crap.
@ThanosReXXX
Thx mate,I have had a frustrating time with this. I gave up but will give it another go through your link,not holding out much hope Edit won't let me save pic after I choose one. I give uo
@Discostew @gatorboi352
I agree this doesn't match up to the best PS4 can offer (though if Power is all you're concerned about, get a PC). Anybody who expected that, well, I'd like to sell them some magic beans (Likewise anybody who thought the Switch wouldn't be more powerful than Wii U. Join the magic beans queue).
Future racing games are neat adverts for new systems going all the way back to F-Zero as they don't have to be realistic-the PS3 and Vita ran really good versions of Wipeout for example. So it's no surprise to see this looking good.
However Switch graphics will get better. Consoles always improve (see - PS4). What you want to see from a new console is that the very first games can surpass games on older hardware and that's what's happening here.
RMX jumps between a 50% and 100% increase in resolution over the Wii U version while offering solid 60fps. It runs at double the frame rate in local multiplayer. It even loads more quickly. Zelda doesn't have as clear an advantage but in portable mode Switch has a better frame rate than Wii U and docked the Switch version has a 50%+ resolution jump and a better draw distance. MK8 Deluxe apparently matches the Wii U version in portable mode and more than doubles the resolution when docked.
Its similar to what happened with all the multiplats around PS4 launch. Basically, the actual launch games for Switch-ports-are improvements on Wii U games developed 3+ years into that machines lifespan. That's all we can ask for at this stage.
@Rontanamo_Bay well I'm in the rather nightmarish situation of wanting the switch but not having it yet - I have to wait for pay day on the 15th I'll be getting it Wednesday if I can find one. Will try and remember to give you my thoughts then. That is if you haven't gone for it already yourself.
And entirely agree about supporting devs such as these!
Much better on Switch...but my favorite change: the addition of the vehicle that looks like Optimus Prime (shown in video, name sorta rhymes).
I was a little disappointed at first by the graphics output to TV for this game; it looked so much better on the Switch screen. Then I changed the TV settings from the Switch menu and now it looks superb. Also helped massively with BotW. Those automatic settings must be more like standard settings. Set to my actual display and with full, games look so much better.
@NintySnesMan Aw man, sorry to hear it still didn't work. I'd send a message to the admin to find out what the heck is up with that not working, if I were you, just use the contactform:
https://www.nintendolife.com/contact
@Dakt ahhh! I count digital and physical. On WiiU same lol
Hang on, Nintendo fanboys agreeing and accepting something DF have published?
Have I fallen through some wormhole in to an alternate universe?
@HyliasHero
Plus, you know, CAPTAIN FALCON!!
What Shin'en did, is indeed quite an achievement, and to date, this IS the most impressive futuristic handheld (and arguably home console) racer EVER made. And it's a Nintendo exclusive...
@ThanosReXXX
I must say Bro Wipeout on psvita is a great futuristic Racer with banging dance music that compliments it. I would say Wipeout and Fast rmx is better than f zero,I say this cause F-ZERO hasn't had a update in years this could all change if switch gets a version
@NintySnesMan Yeah, I actually like most WipEout games as well, but I still think that the crown now belongs to FAST Rmx, it's just that bit more in several departments, and vehicle controls are a lot tighter and better in my opinion, compared to WipEout.
As for F-Zero: I still think that the GameCube game is a wonderful example of what that could be like on Switch. Just imagine that in
Full HD...
And F-Zero too, has these tighter controls. I always say to people that ask me about the difference, that WipEout vehicles can be compared to a boat drifting on waves, going in all directions, making controls a bit more floaty, whereas both F-Zero and FAST Racing have a more direct control scheme. And that just works better for me, so even the last F-Zero game is higher in my list of futuristic racers than any WipEout game.
@gatorboi352 Well those playing on pc arent impressed with the ps 4's power. Thats not the point it's the games and fun factor
@ThanosReXXX
I know what u mean about the controls, it's difficult to do sharp turns with Wipeout without crash bang wallop especially on tight tracks that need perfect steering. Practice practice practice. Gamecube game was ace but I would like to see a new version of F-ZERO but done with same mechanism as GC version,it was very arcade like which I love. Would also like to see another waverace and 1080
I was confused and going say I didn't see the difference between the Wii U version and the Switch version until I change the Youtube video setting from 480p to 1080p in fullscreen. Now I can see the differences! XD
@NintySnesMan Another Wave Race and 1080? Aw, man, you read my mind. I've been dying to see new games in those series. Still playing the old games from time to time because of there not being any new parts...
@TruenoGT It still runs into the other issues with Fast RMX. Namely being that the machines still have really poor handling, deaths are generally really cheap, and being rammed from behind instantly drains all your speed and generally makes you lose several places.
@TruenoGT Glad to see another fan of F-Zero X here. GX is usually the one that gets all the love. I'm definitely enjoying Fast RMX, but it is never going to replace F-Zero for me personally.
