RIVE is the last game by Two Tribes, with the founders of the company that brought us the Toki Tori franchise signing off with a full-on and explosive 2D shooter. As a nod to ideals of old-school difficulties and game styles it's an excellent title, but sadly its Wii U eShop version looked doomed and is now officially dropped. The good news is that an 'expanded' version of the game is coming to Switch this year.
Part of the reasoning for this game moving away from Wii U related to performance, with the developers eager that the game run at a solid 60fps, as befitting its genre. In a press release confirming the Switch version that target is re-emphasized - Engine Software is pitching in with development and the Switch will get an 'exclusive' and expanded version of the game, which came out on various platforms in 2016.
Now, we can finally reveal what we've been up to: RIVE was bumped from Wii U to Nintendo Switch, where it'll be playable in ultra-fast and super-challenging 60 FPS glory.
We're developing RIVE on Nintendo Switch together with Engine Software. Details about the game's exclusive Nintendo Switch expansion, as well as a release date, will be announced later on.
Two Tribes has always had a strong Nintendo tradition. Toki Tori on Game Boy Color was our debut, way back in 2001! Since then, many of our games have appeared on Nintendo platforms, including Toki Tori 2+ and RUSH. Lots of fans have let us know they'd like to play RIVE on a Nintendo system. So we can't wait to finally bring RIVE to Nintendo Switch!
RIVE is a great fit for Nintendo Switch. It was always intended as an explosive ode to the action games of the early nineties. Nostalgic, yet thoroughly modern. And we feel that Nintendo Switch, too, is all about bringing the experience from our youth, playing deep and skill-based games together, to the current day.
We were impressed with RIVE when we played it on PC, so this is definitely one to watch.
Is this going on your Switch eShop wishlist for later in the year?

Two Tribes are a fantastic developer, I'll be sorry and sad to see them disband. Another Wii U game has kicked the can.
Yes Yes and Yes loved the demo hopefully we don't have long to wait and with exclusive content for Switch this will be a day one purchase for me .
And the 15% off for those who downloaded the Nindies@Home version? Probably asking too much there...
@SanderEvers my Wii U still has plenty of life in it I have a huge backlog of titles to play through as well the gamepad serves as a remote to our livingroom television we also use the Browser on the Wii U which is an awesome Browser I did my taxes this year on my Wii U gamepad and not to mention we use Netflix and Amazon through our Wii U so it's definitely not dead at our house and it will coexist nicely with our Switch's when we pick them up this week Long Live the Wii U.
YUSS! I held of getting this on PlayStation in the hopes it would come to Switch! Loved the demo, day one purchase for me
@Romeo-75 Switches? Multiple? I tip my hat to you and your family.
Onto the topic at hand, this'll be great on the Switch and I hope extra content includes some co-op multiplayer action! Though I know that's asking too much, I still wouldn't mind another game to play together with friends/online.
Disappointed Rive didn't come to Wii U, but better Switch than never!
Right on. I get excited every time I see a game announce and realize, yep, another handheld version
YEEEEEEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How is this gonna play with no D-Pad. Is it a bullet hell shooter or not?
Well, let me see what the expansion is like, so I can decide if it's worth getting this over the Steam version.
I like the sound of that "exclusive" even if I don't get it.
Nintendo needs more game releases to start with that word. BG&E2 perhaps???
Two Tribes will be missed. One of my favorites from this past gen.
That said, this should have been on Wii U. Out of all the games to get dumped at the last minute for Switch, this one stung the most.
I will pass on buying this game and for what Nintendo put us through with Wii U and the overhype/overpricing on Switch, I will be passing on the Switch too until there is enough value and Nintendo has a lot of work to do (including lots of price balancing) before I will consider coming along ever again.
Been waiting for this one for soooooo long. The Switch library builds . . . .
I think I need this, fills a genre gap nicely but I'm worried about it being too rock hard! I was better at this type of game as a kid but now that my old man reflexes have kicked in, I'm pretty certain I'll get my proverbial handed to me on a plate
Still, If the price is reasonable (say $20) it's on the (ever growing) list.
Found a short gameplay video for those that want to see it in action:

Perfect Switch game. I'm in.
@Romeo-75 I think when people talk about the Wii U being "dead", they don't mean that it's not fun & won't get use from people that have one (I love the Neo Geo Pocket Color I bought in the 90's), but they are referring to the Wii U being dead as a viable sales platform. As much as people who picked up a Wii U deserve the games they were promised, developers also need to make money... not every (not many) developers can launch games knowing they can't make a return on the investment.
After all, this is the era when AAA games developers can go out of business from one dud game.
@ThatNyteDaez yeah we always get two when Nintendo releases a new system we almost didn't get two of the Switch cause of preorder sell outs then the local GameStop got more and offered us one which we gladly took.
@ SanderEvans True, it is a shame the fate of Wii U it had so many awesome qualities and overlooked opportunities I never regreted my purchase and have many fond memories of playing Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros. with family on the holidays as well as movie night sitting on the couch watching movies on Netflix via the Wii U we even use the video chat on the gamepad to video talk with my mother in law whom has a Wii U its a shame that feature never made it into a game for the system .
Exclusive expansion...for now.
I follow this game since the end of 2014.
I really hope for good news in the near Future and for strong sales.
They doing fantastic games, nur the wrong genres.
Sry for my bad english.
I love Two Tribes and I love shooters. I'm getting this one for sure. Too bad they have to go. I hope it does well.
Don't they call shooters something else now? What is it? It's on the tip of my tongue. A Smu or something.
Super excited for this.
Been looking forward to this for a long time. Sorry it's not on the Wii U but it's understandable. Will get on the switch instead.
Nice! Old school side shooters don't come often I'll gladly pick this Ine up.
When is it coming out?
Good on them it looks great, why sacrifice it on a long dead machine held on a thread of life support. I think I'd actually buy that as it has hints of stuff I've played on Neo-Geo which when you peel away the luster of its 1on1 fighting rep was a great shooter, brawler, and puzzle game system.
Looking forward to this one! Love side scrolling shooters!
@River3636 Shmups
Does anyone know what is going on with Hive Jump? I've been looking forward to that game and in the Wii u shop it is still under the coming soon category. But I'm beginning to have serious doubts.
Didnt these guys release a press statement saying that they had wrapped up the wiiu version because they were winding down the studio??? if so this is lame as hell. its been on steam for at least a year.
@3MonthBeef completely different game and just as good in its own ways.
@arrmixer should be soon as its beeen on steam for a year.
@YANDMAN
Awesome! Thanks. I summer release would be ideal.
@Toadie that's what it is. That has been driving me crazy all day.
