We sometimes share videos from the Did You Know Gaming? channel as they can include a lot of interesting trivia and insight into classic games or franchises. This week, however, the channel has switched its tone a little.
It's published a 19 minute tribute to former Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, discussing and celebrating his life and his importance to the gaming industry; you can check it out below.
It's a lovely video - feel free to share your thoughts, as always, in the comments.

Good watch. Thanks
A sorely missed pillar in gaming history.
Absolutely a video that should be watched. What Iwata did for the video game industry is immeasurable, especially if you are a Nintendo gamer. Hopefully we will be able to see his vision in the future with Nintendo's plans that he set in motion, such as the NX.
What everybody else said above.
Let me make a rule that we aren't allow to write the phrase "this video hit me right in the feels" in this comments section. It's such an insincere and stupid thing to say.
This video hit me right in the feels.
Few in the industry and press seemed to actually be interested in his accomplishments and direction until he passed away. Better late than never, though. In contrast, NintendoLife's integrity has consistently been marked by support of Iwata's work and philosophy while he was alive.
Nice video!
Never forgotten. Ever.
Nintendo will never be the same.
This video made me excited about Nintendo then I realised I haven't turned on my wii u on in months and my ps4 gets time every day. Having said that I am currently 40 hours into Dragon quest VII on 3ds, now I don't know what I think.
At the start I was thinking how Iwata changed our lives, Pokemon, Kirby, Smash, Earthbound, so many games that are integral parts our lives would be different or won't even exist. But in the end it was all tears and no thoughts.
Gaming Historian's tribute video to Iwata's life is also worth watching https://youtu.be/k4cJh2YgrKE
Ooo boy, wonder how long Shigiru's will be when he goes.
Lovely video.
Thank you, DYKG
and thank you, Iwata!
Wow, I never knew he was responsible for so much. I see why he was so well respected. A true icon.
He was the best president ever, and a very talented man. Miss him in the directs.
A guy like this did not deserve to go out the way he did. Iwata really was a hero honestly. A very, very respectable man.
Still a very sore miss, and will be for a while I think. Again, thank you for all the smiles you have managed to put on people's faces over the years! We all salute you.
An incredible man and among the greats that were taken from us far too early. There should be a biopic film about his life.
Great video. A man like Iwata only comes once, maybe twice in a lifetime. I just hope he didn't die thinking he failed as a president after the commercial failure of the Wii U and the underwhelming E3 2015.
Darn, I was just about to turn in for the night. I can't wait to give this a watch, but it will have to wait till tomorrow evening. Iwata had a huge impact on my childhood; watching his Nintendo Directs got me excited like a three-year-old watching Barney the Dinosaur. I still remember the sudden rush of heat and cold that came over me when I first heard the shock of his passing. I believe in his final years he set Nintendo along the path to a bright future, but with him gone, I fear for the future of Nintendo.
Life is but a moment
A single grain of sand
That slips right through the hourglass
And slips right through your hand
You've shown me how
To make each moment count
And I know now
What life's all about................
Wow; I knew he did some big things but this turned a light on for me about the man. The world has one less example of a humble servant who loved people and thoroughly enjoyed seeing them smile, using his talents to help others rather than his own self. I only hope Nintendo manages to leave a dent like he did now that they carry that torch.
Great video. I'm really sick of people saying "the feels". It sounds horribly rude.
Iwata's life'll never ends.
Feels bad man.
A great testament to a great man.
@tom_q All it means is that the Wii U, no matter how great the console actually is/was, isn't giving you reasons to switch it on regularly whereas your 3DS is giving you plenty. I feel that they have recognised and rectified this issue, but the proof will be in the pudding.
Great video, great man, immeasurable loss.
Did DYK gaming announce the NX cause it's the 16th of October and nintendo hasn't
Thanks for some fantastic memories Iwata san.
Very nice video. He's left an indelible mark on the gaming industry and won't be forgotten.
Absolutely amazing. It's good to see a video like this that puts everything Satoru did into perspective. Truly a brilliant man with no equal in the gaming industry. If only he'd been able to live just a couple more years to see the NX's debute.
@A01 Like a boss.
Nice presentation!
What makes me respect this man more than anything was his willingness to slash his own pay while Nintendo was doing poorly.
Here in America, a CEO wouldn't think twice about wreacking a company, peacing out on a golden parachute and making the workers pick up the pieces.
Great man. If only half the people in the world were as generous as that...
Anyone else seen the Patcher "Late not so great" comment?
I didn't realize how amazing he was as a programmer. Iwata was a mathematical genius. The combination of talent, personality, and humility are extremely rare these days. I doubt I'll ever see another person like Iwata in my lifetime.

Michael Patcher is talking crap about Mr. Iwata
What a great tribute. I really had no idea of the magnitude of hands on accomplishment that he had within the company. It sounds like he would have been a great guy , both to have a beer with and to work with or for in equal measure .
Great man
Required watching for Michael Pachter, I think!
@Nintendude789
That comment section definitely needs a few mods lol
@abe_hikura @Nintendude789 Ya I seen that earlier. Pachter's an idiot. Always has been. Not worth the time of day. He's a buffoon masquerading as an anal cyst.
@Jd12345678
If someone wants to say this hit them right in the feels, thats just fine. Its not up to you to decide that someone is being insincere.
Dont be so unkind. Let people speak their mind.
A fitting tribute to one of the industry's best.
I was fond of him from the Nintendo Directs (frickin' adorable, like Hiro from Heroes), but I did not realize the full scope of this great person, and perhaps he'd been fine with that. But after all that set-up on his ambition, determination, and compassion, when the "Kyoto sky" line was dropped, I was holding my face back from breaking down. Damn shame he was taken out with so much ahead of him.
that was incredibly good and very sad at the end.
It still pains my soul to know that Mr. Iwata is no longer here. He was truly genuine and will be missed! I will continue the tradition and play Nintendo games! RIP big Homie.
Nice video!
@SmashbrosFtw1306 I thought we were waiting for October 21st?
what a great man. will always be missed.
Watching the video almost brought back tears!
Up until this death I never truly felt sadness when a "famous" person died, but Satoru Iwata was such an extraordinary man that it had to be different with him.
I already knew most parts of the video because of other videos I watched immediately after he passed away, but it still hurts.
I think it's a good idea to regularly get reminded of him, of what an exceptional human being he was. On the one hand it gives us hope, on the other hand it reminds us that he was the exception to the rule and that we can't expect the same vision and greatness from his successors.
Awesome video and great man that will never be forgotten.
It's still sad he died... I kinda lost interest in Nintendo without him.
