It's rather hard to believe, but Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse is only a week away from launching in North America. The hotly anticipated sequel(ish) to Shin Megami Tensei IV is filling an otherwise quiet period for the 3DS, while also giving RPG fans something to root for.
In order to generate a little bit more hype before launch day, Atlus put together a brief trailer giving you the gist of the game. Here, we're given the premise of the story – wherein our demon-hunting protagonist is resurrected and forced to work for a death god – along with some glimpses of the gameplay. It all looks excellent, and we'll be sure to post a review with our thoughts.
What do you think? Will you be picking this up? What did you think of its predecessor? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

SMTIV was awesome, but I'm gonna wait for reviews of this one...feels like a forced sequel(ish) and more of the exactly same thing.
This looks fantastic! - Loving the grim voice acting ha ha!
hopefully they didn't censor this game
@MrSeitaro Dunno man, why would it be "forced"?
In SMT4, Walter and Jonathan were basically humanoid personifications of the Law and Chaos paths. I had major difficulty seeing them as actual characters, especially when compared to some other games from the franchise like Devil Survivor, not even mentioning Persona. From the promotional materials that I've seen so far, the characters in this one could be acting like actual characters, so at least the story should be more enjoyable.
The game should also be a bit less dreary, since it takes place after the events of the SMT4 Neutral path. The demons slaughtering people should now at least be taking place in daylight and in more color Each time I turned off SMT4, I felt like climbing out of a cellar.
Also, they improved the overworld.
@Yalaa
I'd say, of course it will be.
Atlus where's snowboard kids 3?😔
Looking at that article picture, it would appear that Ganondorf has cunningly snuck into another game world....
THe only thing that will prevent me from buy this game is if the overworld is so poor as the predecessor.
I did enjoy SMTIV a lot, but really it was ridiculous bad navigate through Tokyo.
Between this and Dragon Quest I'm not sure what to play first! That's about 200 plus hours of gaming there.
Oh yeah !
Question for SMT fans, do you have to play these in order? Are the games connected with an over-arching story?
Thanks in advance
@Mr_Zurkon Not necessary. There are some things talked about the previous games, but in the end, each main title is its own experience that doesn't need the previous titles to be played.
@Mr_Zurkon @yannah21
Well, I'd recommend playing SMT4 before SMT4A, since Apocalypse is more of a direct sequel, seems to continue the story immediately after the events of 4 and previous characters remain as major players in the story. Plus, it's also on the 3DS.
Other than that, as someone who has yet to play Nocturne, I can say you don't need to play the games before it to understand anything.
Really looking forward to this. It supposedly fixes the few issues SMT IV had (balances the smirk system, fixes the world map, and allows you to make explicit choices to determine your route instead of having some annoying hidden point system, among other things) and has a similarly excellent plot.
I loved loved LOVED SMT IV. Very rarely does an RPG hold on to me enough that I keep playing it consistently until I finish it, but that one had a death grip. I'm so happy we're getting more of that world, more of those systems, more of that everything with a whole bunch of new stuff! Can't wait for Tuesday to get here!
Any news on when us Eu residents get the game, and if it will be physical or a digital only release like smtiv was?
YAY! I can't for the world to end
OMG I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS BUT I STILL DIDNT FINISH SMT4 AND IM PLAYING THE GAME FOR 2 HOURS PER DAY TRYING TO FINISH I WANNA GET THE NEUTRAL ROUTE
@Mr_Zurkon You dont need to play any SMT games to play this, but it is recommended that you play SMT4 since this game is a sequel to it but you dont HAVE to, that's why this game is called SMT4 Apocalypse instead of SMT5
@Piersen Devil survivor was so freaking good
i love how this game has animated cutscenes and theres definitely more production value in this game compared to SMTIV
@hieveryone Indeed. I beat the Naoya path (because it's the best :3), the Amane path immediately after (because I still wanted more), and I still plan to finish other paths someday in the future.
SMT replaced Final Fantasy as the premier RPG series ages ago in my opinion.
@Piersen i only beated yuzu's path
