It's Japanese chart time again, and the results this week include a notable release on Sony hardware and some modest results from Nintendo's perspective.
Starting with software we have Utawarerumono: The Two Hakuoros leading the way on Vita, with PS4 and PS3 versions also in the top 10. The highest placed game on Nintendo hardware is Yo-kai Watch 3 in fourth, while Minecraft: Wii U Edition is the only title in the top 10 for the big N's home console. One Piece: Great Pirate Colosseum on 3DS has made a modest debut, meanwhile, only just squeaking past 9,000 units. You can see the top 20 below with lifetime sales in brackets.

Following the release in last week's results of the 'slim' PS4 model, Sony's iterated system saw sales nearly half but remain a long way ahead of rivals, making up ground from some poor pre-Slim sales. The New 3DS LL (XL) is performing reasonably well, and the 2DS is still shifting decent numbers in its second week since the recent 're-launch' in Japan.
- PlayStation 4 – 49,652 (96,433)
- New 3DS LL – 15,491 (15,808)
- 2DS – 14,492 (18,754)
- PlayStation Vita – 9,817 (12,931)
- New 3DS – 3,379 (3,047)
- Wii U – 2,731 (2,703)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,105 (1,099)
- 3DS – 462 (425)
- Xbox One – 124 (156)
- 3DS LL – 74 (106)
All told, it was a better week for games on Sony hardware than for Nintendo's systems, though the New 3DS LL and 2DS are still shifting decent numbers in Japan.

PS4 has finally overtaken Wii U this week in lifetime sales. It's been coming for a long time but it's still a sad day. The overall sales figures now stands at 3,267,243 PS4's versus 3,265,329 Wii U's.
3ds/2ds is still going strong at 33,000 sales. No wonder Nintendo doesn't want to announce the other system people keep asking for. Not gonna say it as the walls have ears!! 😛
@Spoony_Tech You rang?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE took quite a long time tbh considering the failure the Wii U is.
Minecraft Wii U edition still being in the top 10 nearly a year after launch. This is why NX must have Minecraft at launch or else it'll fail.
@Grumblevolcano Has it been nearly a year yet in Japan? I though they got it earlier this year.
@Spoony_Tech Wiki says worldwide in December 2015.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Would you happen to have the time frames? Is it 30 months PS4 and 46 months WiiU?
I thought for sure the Japanese would revolt when Sony announced the west was getting PS4 in November and Japan had to wait until February. Plus PS3 was still selling and getting most PS4 games, and Vita, and 3DS. And everybody seems to play on smartphones there. I'm surprised PS4 has done that we'll in Japan, even if passing Wii U sales isn't much of an achievement it still had a big lead.
@Grumblevolcano Minecraft Wii U physically released on the 23rd June 2016. 3 months is not nearly a year last time I checked. It released digitally on the eShop alright at the end of 2015.
@BensonUii Nah you're alright there Mystic Meg.
@BensonUii Somebody out there is right and trust me we will hear all about it.
See I told you I was right see!! Doubt me will ya!!
@BensonUii I send stories to GoNintendo, thankfully I've never had trouble with their news tips section. If you were any good a psychic, you'd know that. What's your favourite fruit? I predict it's a lemon. Bitter just like yourself.
Wow I forgot about persona. All I care about is Yakuza 6 (RgG)! It's gonna be sooooooo good.
Good sales numbers for PS4. I'm hoping this is the start of stronger titles. Less remakes and ports please.
One big happy family here at NL.
Pffftt...!!!
New 3DS XL will be on the top once again after Pokemon Sun or Moon have been released.
@Anti-Matter
Especially since Japan will get several new awesome themed consoles for it that we won't see here in the West!
@Manjushri Jrpgs, music games and visual novels. Lucky for me stuff I like. My vita tv/vita are getting much more playtime now.
@Manjushri because tons of games in psvita are japanese third party, visual novels, otome games and jrpg and we are talking about japanese sales so duh
@Spoony_Tech Yeah, maybe I should just completely forget about an NX announcement this year and if we do get one then that will be a nice surprise.
Ps4 and x1 may sell more but I still have more fun playing my Wii u.
@BensonUii But... what if I'm a Pisces refreshing NintendoLife every few minutes?
Wow, 3DS is absolutely killing it. Ya, PS4 sold more but it's still riding the high of the slim release. 3DS just keeps on going. Granted it's also riding a smaller, mini mini wave of the 2DS relaunch. But even so it's getting pretty old, and Nintendo systems typically have shorter lifespans so it's encouraging seeing it still selling strong.
@Manjushri because sony gave up way too soon and japan is a HUGE fan of portable gaming so DUH
xD this is funny
There's a Yokai Watch named after.... Food?
Really?
Now that Sony has taken the home console market from Nintendo, hopefully Nintendo can use it as motivation to make sure NX comes in gun blazing in every way possible.
2DS has nearly doubled the weekly sales of the "3DS family" in Japan. But how will it do in the holidays?
@Manjushri The Vita isn't a success in Japan though. It's far behind the PSP. It's just the japanese market has collapsed so it looks like it's doing good. The only actual system doing previous gen numbers is the 3DS. If the successor of the 3DS isn't a success I don't see how the japanese industry could survive. I hope Sony will be reasonable and stop bribing japanese publisher to ignore it because destroying the japanese industry just to kill Nintendo is a really childish and stupid move.
@bitleman contrary to what you might think, Sony cares more about the industry and probably more about Nintendo succeeding than you do.
The 3DS is in the 3rd party space it's in for the same reasom the Wii U is in. Developers don't want to have to cram their games onto it and waste resources dumbing down their assets so the hardware can barely handle them.
Nintendo screwed themselves by gimping both system for the sake of a bad gimmick.
And the sales charts prove that.
And no, the 3DS isn't doing DS numbers.
Not even close.
@Luna_110
Yup. Yokai Watch 3 Tempura or Sushi.
@SahashraLA The 3DS is at least doing PSP numbers. Something every other system of this gen fail to do. And if Sony care so much about the industry why do they hold in hostage a great franchise like YS and let it die on their hardware. You try to make me think those games couldn't run on a Nintendo hardware? If they were less stupid they wouldn't have bashed Nintendo so much about graphics and it wouldn't have backfired over the rest of the japanese industry who is doing abysmal numbers. Once again, destroying the entire japanese industry for the sake of killing Nintendo was an incredibly stupid move and I hope Yoshida will be fired.
