Though there are more exciting times ahead in terms of new games, we're in the middle of a relatively quiet spell of major releases. That's certainly the case in Japan, where the limited number of new releases are struggling to make much of an impact. In fact, the Media Create charts are more interesting for the bad results, arguably, than the good.

To start with the software chart, there's not much to tell. Tokyo Xanadu eX+ on PS4 was the only new release to pass 10,000 units, and we have the usual batch of evergreen games on Wii U and 3DS ticking along. Yo-kai Watch 3 is still number one, though it doesn't need massive sales to take that top spot.

  1. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura (Level-5, 07/16/16) – 22,992 (1,204,651)
  2. [PS4] Tokyo Xanadu eX+ (Falcom, 09/12/16) – 15,069 (New)

  12. [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SIE, 03/19/15) – 4,907 (869,381)
  13. [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 4,213 (1,465,416)
  14. [PS3] Tales of Berseria (Bandai Namco, 08/18/16) – 2,832 (102,888)

  18. [Wii U] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo, 06/23/16) – 2,709 (92,741)

Hardware sales are interesting, as mentioned above, for areas that are doing badly. The New 3DS LL (XL) is still comfortably in the lead, with Vita being the only other system in five figures. Sales are mostly down, and the Wii U finds itself in 3rd place and as the number one home console, despite only shifting 3,527 units. The PS4 is the big loser, dropping to a woeful 560 sales, less than half of the PS3.

The reason is obvious, though, and gives us a big proviso on the numbers. Stock of the original PS4 models have been running down, and savvy consumers have also been holding off. The new PS4 'slim' model is due this week, so we'll likely see Sony's system return to normal levels following multiple weeks of rapid decline.

  1. New 3DS LL – 17,122 (19,824)
  2. PlayStation Vita – 10,280 (10,081)
  3. Wii U – 3,527 (4,468)
  4. New 3DS – 3,184 (3,975)
  5. PlayStation 3 – 1,143 (1,204)
  6. PlayStation 4 – 560 (1,828)
  7. 3DS – 412 (507)
  8. Xbox One – 232 (126)
  9. 3DS LL – 113 (137)

From Nintendo's perspective the 3DS continues to tick along nicely, as always.
