Though there are more exciting times ahead in terms of new games, we're in the middle of a relatively quiet spell of major releases. That's certainly the case in Japan, where the limited number of new releases are struggling to make much of an impact. In fact, the Media Create charts are more interesting for the bad results, arguably, than the good.
To start with the software chart, there's not much to tell. Tokyo Xanadu eX+ on PS4 was the only new release to pass 10,000 units, and we have the usual batch of evergreen games on Wii U and 3DS ticking along. Yo-kai Watch 3 is still number one, though it doesn't need massive sales to take that top spot.
- [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura (Level-5, 07/16/16) – 22,992 (1,204,651)
- [PS4] Tokyo Xanadu eX+ (Falcom, 09/12/16) – 15,069 (New)
- [Wii U] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Mojang, 06/23/16) – 7,356 (114,628)
- [3DS] Dragon Ball Fusions (Bandai Namco, 08/04/16) – 7,002 (152,418)
- [3DS] Puzzle & Dragons X: Kami no Shou / Ryuu no Shou (GungHo Online Entertainment, 07/28/16) – 6,229 (169,170)
- [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo, 04/29/16) – 5,806 (428,339)
- [PS4] The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year Edition (Spike Chunsoft, 09/01/16) – 5,774 (17,723)
- [PS4] F1 2016 (Codemasters, 09/12/16) – 5,443 (New)
- [PSV] Geten no Hana with Yumeakari Aizouban (Koei Tecmo, 09/12/16) – 5,304 (New)
- [PS4] Tales of Berseria (Bandai Namco, 08/18/16) – 5,203 (214,375)
- [3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire (Pokemon, 11/21/14) – 5,082 (2,889,923)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SIE, 03/19/15) – 4,907 (869,381)
- [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 4,213 (1,465,416)
- [PS3] Tales of Berseria (Bandai Namco, 08/18/16) – 2,832 (102,888)
- [PSV] Yuukyuu no Tierblade: Lost Chronicle (Idea Factory, 09/12/16) – 3,369 (New)
- [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo, 02/18/16) – 3,009 (235,952)
- [PS4] Grand Theft Auto V (Low Price Version) (10/08/15) – 2,714 (156,420)
- [Wii U] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo, 06/23/16) – 2,709 (92,741)
- [PS4] The King of Fighters XIV (SNK, 08/25/16) – 2,693 (28,511)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Happy Price Selection) (Nintendo, 03/17/16) – 2,540 (90,273)
Hardware sales are interesting, as mentioned above, for areas that are doing badly. The New 3DS LL (XL) is still comfortably in the lead, with Vita being the only other system in five figures. Sales are mostly down, and the Wii U finds itself in 3rd place and as the number one home console, despite only shifting 3,527 units. The PS4 is the big loser, dropping to a woeful 560 sales, less than half of the PS3.
The reason is obvious, though, and gives us a big proviso on the numbers. Stock of the original PS4 models have been running down, and savvy consumers have also been holding off. The new PS4 'slim' model is due this week, so we'll likely see Sony's system return to normal levels following multiple weeks of rapid decline.
- New 3DS LL – 17,122 (19,824)
- PlayStation Vita – 10,280 (10,081)
- Wii U – 3,527 (4,468)
- New 3DS – 3,184 (3,975)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,143 (1,204)
- PlayStation 4 – 560 (1,828)
- 3DS – 412 (507)
- Xbox One – 232 (126)
- 3DS LL – 113 (137)
From Nintendo's perspective the 3DS continues to tick along nicely, as always.

Move along people there's nothing to see here.
The PS4 numbers are tiny. What's going on there? That's bad for all of us. Some series like Dragon Quest are predicated on a big Japan install base.
Maybe because the Japanese are not stupid little Sheeple.
Splatoon just needs a price cut "happy price selection" to be in the top 5 again
Why the "massive" increase in Xbone sales all of a sudden, lol?
@Dezzy I wouldn't worry. It's just the typical fall while a new hardware revision has been announced but not released. PS4 Slim will be out soon and it might even reach portable sales levels for a week or two.
@Dezzy They're likely waiting for the PS4 Pro as the PS4 games that would appeal to the Japanese audience have all been delayed to either December or February.
@Dezzy Those numbers are due to people waiting to get the pro.
The console sales in Japan are both pitiful and embarrassing.
Damn. Xbox One is dominating!Poor Xbox
Ps3 outsells ps4 that's a statement
regardless, those numbers all around are kinda terrible.
Japan is DOOMED! or is it Sony.....or Nintendo......oops maybe Microsoft is DOOMED! EVERYTHING IS DOOMED!
Nice to see Minecraft Wii U Edition selling over 100,000 physical copies in Japan, I believe it's also the all-time best seller on the Japanese eShop too. Mario & Sonic will also hit 100k too in the next couple of weeks on Wii U.
I wonder how long Sun and Moon will be #1 in Japan. Probably multiple months.
@BensonUii Console sales tend to drop when a new version is announced. People will wait until it is out, which in this case is the PS4 Slim according to the article and the "New" PS4 Pro is also on its way soon.
The PS3 outsold the 4? Interesting
@Dezzy ps4 pro announcement
@Gerbwmu
If everything is doomed, no more games, no more exciting.
Keep Positive !
I'm sure Nintendo will dominate once again.
Wonder what the sales for Wii U will be when Nintendo shows the NX .
Multi comments on how Japan loves consoles on the go like 3ds, psvita and still your surprised on this....
What's telling is how many people apparently don't read the article and just go right to the sales numbers. It says right the text why the PS4 is down so sharply in Japan, and the reasons make a lot of sense. I suspect, along with most people, that sales of that console will shoot right back up when the new models are it and readily available to buy. It was selling well over five figures regularly before stock of the current model was running out.
